I can get an unresponsive iPod Classic (160 GB) into disc mode...now what do I do to get iTunes to recognize it?
To get out of disk mode do a iPod Hard Reset.
Toggle the Hold switch till you dont see the red mark.
Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON then release the buttons
Select your preferred language.
See this Apple support Article on the 5Rs.

My ipod won't go into disk mode
i've tried and tried and it won't go into disk mode. it shows an apple then a folder with the ! and when plugged into the computer sometimes it'll say don't disconnnect for about 10 seconds and then it'll go back to the apple.
also it sounds as though the drive is stuck in a loop; a weird repetitive whirring sound when i hold it up to my ear.If you can't get it into disk mode and restore the iPod it most likely needs service, especially with that noise it's making.
Service request. -
for the last week and a half my ipod has not been able to start, everytime i turn it on i get the apple logo then the big red x that tells me to contact ipod support. i've restarted it a thousand times, made sure it was charged and when i plug it into the computer it doesn't register that the ipod is plugged in. when i tried to get the ipod into disk mode, it continued to give me the red x. is there a way to fix this? is my ipod killed for good?
Problem Solved.

Ipod won't go into disk mode for recovery
This morning my IPod (80GB Video Ipod) wouldn't play, so I rebooted it, but it would not restart and it gets the red X sign. I followed the directions to get it to go into disk mode, but it still won't. It keeps going to the red X screen! I can't seem to find anymore help on how to fix this!!!
Anybody had this problem? How did you get it fixed, please don't tell me that you can't because I have only had my ipod for a few months!
How do I get my ipod into Disk Mode?!For anybody experiencing the problem I described above, I have bad news and good news...
Bad news - The hard drive on your 5th gen iPod is shot if you are having the same problem as me with getting the "red x" and not being able to go into disk mode. It is irreparable...sad.
The Good News! - As long as your iPod is under warranty and has not had any water damage and can pass a visual inspection from an apple employee for physical damage they will replace it! Simply set up an appointment at an apple store with a "Genius Bar" employee. It only took about 5 minutes from start to finish for me to explain my problem, have the guy run like three super quick tests and then swap out my broken iPod for a brand new one.
Good luck all! -
I have the Ipod Nano 6th Generation.
The other day I went to power up the ipod and it would not switch on.
Eventually I got just a white screen and this is all it does.
I have done a restore through I Tunes and this has not done anything.
Also when holding down the sleep wake button and the - button the screen will go from black to white or white to black and when I tryto go into disk mode nothing happens.
Has anyone got any other ideas please.
Thanks in AdvanceHi lisacowan!

20G iPod will not go into disk mode
Hopefully someone can help.
I have a 2.5 year old 20g iPod with black / white screen.
I have the unhappy icon showing on the screen. I have tried the 5R's with no success and have been advised to go into disk mode in order to restore via iPod updater etc.
I cannot achieve disk mode and my PC (and other will not recognise).
It also makes a clicking noise booting up, surely the hard drive cannot be faulty after such a relativly short time.
Any help is much appreciated..........Dave

My mini ipod will not go into disk mode. What should I do?
When ever I try to put it into disk mode it will either not go into disk mode for a few seconds or it will not go into disk mode at all.

IPod classic won't go Disk Mode
My iPod classic has a red cross and won't go to Disk Mode. Does this means my iPod died and I need to buy a new one?
Charge it up fully. Toggle the hold switch. Try getting into diagnostics mode again. See Corrupt iPod classic.

Ipod classic 120gb stuck in disk mode
i have a ipod classic 120gb and im having issues with it. i am unable to get it out of disk mode, my computer and itunes will not recognize it. ive tried all the steps ive seen in the forums still no luck. ive tried other usb port and other computers with no luck. it is almost 4 yrs old so warranty and other options are expired. does anyone have any suggestions?
That's super odd. It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive. I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread. He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

So, I tried to restore my iPod to the factory settings via iTunes. It has been a few days now and its still stuck in disk mode telling me "Do Not Disconnect" and it only charges on my laptop. I tried hooking it up to a wall mount to charge and than it told me that I need to use iTunes to restore it. Here's the thing, it won't leave disk mode and its not registering on my iTunes. What can I do to get it back to normal,
Oh yeah, all of the latest updates for my software and iTunes are current.Mee too!
That's my SMART DATA results:
Retracts: 134
Reallocs: 351
Pending Sectors: 1
Start/Stops: 124
Temp: Cur 35c
min 19c
mac 47c
What can we do?
Change HD?
I also tried to restore it in the DFU mode, but still rebboting in disk mode!!! -
My iPod classic won't go into disk mode
I have an iPod Classic (120GB) here. When I turn it on, it gives me a screen with the Apple logo first and after a few seconds a screen with a red circle, a cross in the circle and the text: www.apple.com/support/ipod . I followed all the steps on that page, however my iPod won't go into disk mode. The iPod is not seen by my iMac and iTunes. What to do?
