120 Gig iPod

I was thinking about getting one of these iPods for my job. I have alot of down time, so I am able to watch movies on my portable dvd player.
Has anyone ever filled one of these things up all the way to 120?
Will the video still play at its previous quality, or will the lack of room affect the way it plays?

Pretty sure some people have, if they honestly have THAT many movies. But it still plays at it's quality that you have it on. So I would buy one if I didn't already spend $200 on an iTouch.

  • 120 Gig IPOD Itunes erased all music on ipod multiple times.

I have had a 120 GIG Ipod for several years now with no problems whatsoever. Filled up about 80 gigs of music. Recently when putting more music on my Ipod, iTunes started to put the songs on slowly. I'm talking it would take 10 minutes to put a single song on, when before it would only take mere seconds. Then once the sync failed, and I eject the Ipod, every single thing on it was completely erased. This has happened more than once now, even when I restored the Ipod, it continues to occur. I find this truly ridiculous. I have seen many sites where something like this has happened and there are some solutions (IE auto sync check box, etc) and I assure you I have proper settings, manually managing my music etc, and there is no way at all period, that this should be happening. I am pretty close to just wailing this thing on the ground and never buying another Apple product, so can someone please help me out before that happens. Thank you in advance.

My guess would be that there is an area of the hard drive that is failing. The delay comes when iTunes tries to read back data that has been placed there. If it can't read the data reliably then at some point it will fall over. Here's how to check things out...
*Check your iPod with Diagnostics Mode*
It's possible that your iPod's hard drive has started to fail. Take your iPod and place your right thumb on the centre SELECT button and your left on the top MENU button. Press down both thumbs for about 6 seconds until your iPod reboots. Immediately move your left thumb around to the rewind button |<< on the left and hold this down together with SELECT for a further 6 seconds. Your iPod should now switch into Diagnostic Boot mode. Press MENU for *Manual Test*, then select *IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* to reveal your stats. For comparison here are mine for my 2 year old 6th Generation Classic:
    Retracts: 889
    Reallocs: 12
    Pending Sectors: 0
    PowerOn Hours: 2202
    Start/Stops: 894
    Temp: Current 24c
    Temp: Min 10c
    Temp: Max 50c
Take a note of your results. When finished press *SELECT & MENU* for 6 seconds to reset the iPod again.
With modern disc drives sectors are no longer marked bad by a disc scan, if the SMART firmware detects a sector it has trouble accessing it will attempt to invisibly reallocate it to a spare area of the disc.
Note that I've only 12 remapped sectors and none pending. To help explain what the numbers mean here is an extract from the Wikipedia S.M.A.R.T. article:
    *Reallocated Sectors Count*
Count of reallocated sectors. When the hard drive finds a read/write/verification error, it marks this sector as "reallocated" and transfers data to a special reserved area (spare area). This process is also known as remapping, and "reallocated" sectors are called remaps. This is why, on modern hard disks, "bad blocks" cannot be found while testing the surface – all bad blocks are hidden in reallocated sectors. However, as the number of reallocated sectors increases, the read/write speed tends to decrease. The raw value normally represents a count of the number of bad sectors that have been found and remapped. Thus, the higher the attribute value, the more sectors the drive has had to reallocate.
    *Pending sector count*
Number of "unstable" sectors (waiting to be remapped, because of read errors). If an unstable sector is subsequently written or read successfully, this value is decreased and the sector is not remapped. Read errors on a sector will not remap the sector (since it might be readable later); instead, the drive firmware remembers that the sector needs to be remapped, and remaps it the next time it's written.
Large numbers of Reallocs or Pending Sectors would suggest your drive is failing and that you may need to repair or replace your iPod. Check your stats after another attempt to update your iPod. If the numbers increase that again points to hard drive failure. While it won't be good news at least you'll know it isn't some random software problem and you can decide what to do next.

If your iPod is OK then this trick may help you get your data on to it.
    *Break up large transfers*
In iTunes select the menu item *File... New Smart Playlist*. Change the first drop-down box to Playlist, the next to is and the next to Music or whatever playlist holds the bulk of the content you want on your device. Tick against *Limit to*, type in say 10, then change the drop-down to GB, and set the last drop-down to artist. When you click OK you can enter a name for the playlist, e.g. Transfer. Now sync this playlist to your iPod rather than your entire library. When the sync is complete modify the rule ( *File... Edit playlist* ) to increase the size by your chosen amount, then sync and repeat. You can experiment with different size increments, if it doesn't work just choose something a bit smaller until it works each time. Before long you should have all your music on your iPod. Once that's done you can move on to other media such as podcasts, videos, photos, playlists etc.

  • 120 gig ipod and itunes...now iphone.

Here is my dilemma. I have over 150 gigs of music in my itunes. I have a 120 gig ipod classic. Obviously not all of my music will fit on my ipod, so I have it set to sync the check marked songs only. Now, I purchased an iphone 4 last week (awesome phone, btw) and would like to put music on my iphone also. I have the 32 gig iphone, so all my music won't fit. Is the only solution to manually put music on it? There should be a better way. Somebody help me!

How about creating different playlists or playlist folders, Genius playlists? See also http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPhone_iOS4_UserGuide.pdf , page 99

  • After restoring 120 Gig Ipod classic, Keep getting random Sync errors?

So, I was using a third party software called Media Monkey to tag some album art on my ipod. For whatever reason my the program kept closing out and crashing. Eventually it crashed so hard that it wiped my entire library of music. After some failed attempts to save my music by taking it off of the hidden ipod_Control folder, I gave up and restored it. After the restore, whenever I attempt to add music I keep getting random numbered sync errors (for example -50, -1303.-69,-53). This is only after I add about 3 or 4 gigs of space. (I tired re adding the music album by album and still have the same issue after only 2 gigs of space.) I  have NEVER had a problem with this ipod before, it's not even 4 months old yet so i'm not sure what is going on here. I have called apple three times (all i'm told is if I want actually help and not articles that i've already used, I have to pay.) I have tired making it a disk drive but itunes still treats my ipod like it's an ipod and not a disk drive. Any help would be REALLY nice. Thank you for reading! I've also restore my ipod multiple times as well.

Hopefully it is only a filesystem corrupted by conflicting Apps.
Try to fix the iPod filesystem, using  Properties->Tools->error checking.
    Then Restore the iPod.
if then doesn't work, do the iPod Disk Diagnostics, as posted by tt2, it wont fix your problem , but helps in troubleshooting.
    Good Luck!

  • 3 210 gig ipods constantally crashing propible solution

I have 3 identical 120 gig ipod classic's that constantally crash and restart themselves. I mean these things crash every 1/2 hour to an hour. It has been driving me nuts for about a year and I have restored them many times with the same resault. I then thought there is no way that 3 ipods are reacting the same way with no reason so I started thinking. I have already tried diferent computers, same result, so it must be my libary files (all MP3 no itunes). I then searched for an MP3 file check freeware and found something called MP3val and ran it and it came up with thousands of file errors( i have about 20000 )  mostly the number of bits in the file tag didn't match the the number of bits actually in the file and extra junk at the end of the file. Anyway long story shortened apparentally I had alot of mp3 file errors which the program fixed and since i fixed them my ipod hasn't crashed once. I hope this helps sombody who was as frustrated as I was.

  • Sincing ipod classic 120 gig with i tunes

I've been trying to update a new 120 gig classic with my i tunes library but i keep getting the message that i tunes 8 has to be donwloaded. when i try to download version 8, i get the message that a windows installer package programme that is required couldn't be found.
    can anyone help ?

If it's a one-time "glitch," you can try restarting your computer with the iPod still connected.  Try ejecting again after the restart.
If the problem recurs, you may have a process running (other than iTunes) that is accessing the iPod's storage.  When connected, the iPod's "disk" is like other mounted volumes.  This process may be some type of utility that continously monitors your mounted volumes for security reasons, such as to prevent access by malware.
If you know of such a program that you have running in the background, there may be a setting to exclude your iPod's disk.

  • Very strange iPod 120 gig problems

About one month ago, my 120 gb iPod Classic began to randomly pause when moved and skip songs and videos. I reset, restored, checked for iTunes and iPods updates, and reinstalled, but the problems continued.
After experimenting with different brands of headphones and doing research, it appeared to me that the most likely culprit was a worn headphone jack.
I sent it to Apple's repair service, which returned it a week later, saying it had been repaired.
It worked just fine for about 3 days, then resumed the pausing and skipping. Album artwork also sometimes appeared as a garbled "static" looking image.
I then thought it might be a issue with my computer, so I ran several virus scans, defragmented it, and formatted the iPod as FAT32.
Next, I restarted the computer, then restored the iPod, then restarted again and synced the iPod.
It worked like a charm...for roughly 3 hours. I then experimented with just doing a reset, restarting the computer, and syncing the iPod, which bought me another hour on average.
However, it didn't work for long. After two days, that method no longer worked, and it now immediately pauses and skips whenever I listen to it.
I'm at my wits end with this thing. I'm not sure whether sending it back to Apple will help, since it didn't last time, so any advice on what to do is appreciated.
    Thanks -

Thanks...I have tried the various options and the only item of interest is that my only account on this computer says it has 102 gig of memory used up.  However, when I open and look at the individual files, they add up to less than 15 gigs.

I tried to restore my 120 gb iPod and got an error 1413 message - "cannot restore iPod". I started to reset turning the hold switch on and off and now my iPod seems to be permanently locked. I had been having trouble syncing music, When I tried to sync, iTunes said it didn't recognize my iPod, even though I was on the iPod page in iTunes which showed the model number and the serial number of my iPod

I am having essentialy the same problem, but my iPod came from a PC and is now on a PC. The person who gave me the iPod didn't give me the wall adapter piece, so I bought a "Griffin" brand that was said to be compatible with this model. When I first plugged it into the wall, the Apple appeared with a bar underneath as though it was loading the new software. When the bar got to the end, the "plug into the wall" icon reappeared, but when I plug it in to the wall now, that icon is the only thing that shows, even after resetting and trying to run diagnostics.
When I doc the iPod on a charger I have or plug the USB into my computer and "reset" it, a battery with a charge icon appears, but there is no "motion" in the icon so it doesn't appear to be charging. The screen eventually goes back to the apple then to the "plug it into the wall" icon. HELP!!! Is is possible the wall adapters isn't the right one? Should I be charging through a firewire cable instead (which I also don't have...)?

  • Windows Formatted 30 gig ipod needs ipod rip for video downloads

Is this even available anywhere?. I used "ipod rip" when I bought my mac G5 so I would be able to continue adding music to my windows 1.0 formatted 30 gig ipod without having to lose my existing music that I had no way of retrieving since my pc had died. Is there a similar patch that will allow me to transfer movies and tv shows downloaded from itunes onto my ipod?

i defer to Zevoneer on this sort of thing. this post of his may be of some assistance:

  • Virus Tranfer w/30 gig ipod Video

I have read previous posts and i just want some clarity.
I have a 30 gig ipod vid and i was wondering if i put music pics or vids on it from an infected computer can i transfer them to another computer. I read it is possible if you are transfering stuff to the second computer as if the ipod were a removable disk, but what if i only use the 2nd computer to load my ipod (tranfer only to the ipod) via itunes? Also if i used other software to transfer my music, vids, or pics, to the second computer could i tranfer a virus then? I ask cuz at an internet cafe i burned a cd with vids n music. I scanned them before doing so and upon inserting it to a friends computer before transfering the vids n stuff i scanned it and viruses appeared. I knew the cafe had some virus that always inserted an exe into the folders i stored my files in, so i was careful, and thankfully so! If it is possible, then before doing any transferring to or from my friends computer can i safely attach my ipod via usb to my friends computer and scan it incase, without putting my friends computer at risk? Question is long and drawn out, but i dont wanna ask more questions, you know? Thanks a mill in advance.

i would imagine that if the virus was attached to music/vid/pic, then yes, there is a very good possibility that you could transfer the virus to the computer. your best bet would be just saving it to disc(cd/HDD/flash), virus scan/clean and then uploading to ipod. good luck!
