1200 x 800 vs. 1280 x 800

In the refurbished section of this website, there is a macbook 2.4 ghz computer that is running for 1,299. The only difference is the 1200 x 800 mega pixels. The brand new ones have 1280 x 800. Is that even a noticeable difference? Does that mean the screen is broken? Thanks for any comments,
-Chris

Refurbs are a great way to go Chris. You'll very seldom see comments here from people with problems from a refurbished machine. Refurbs are actually fully tested and often more so than a machine fresh off the line. You can also get great prices as you know.

  • Cinema HD 30" + PowerBook G4 1.33 = Max Resolution 1280 x 800?

    Hi,
I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.33 MHz and a recently purchased Apple Cinema HD Display 30" and the max resolution I can display is 1280 x 800. The specs for the PB are (from the Apple support area (L29922A_EN.pdf))
    Video and graphics support
    • ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 graphics processor
with AGP 4X support and 64MB of DDR SDRAM
    for 2D/3D graphics acceleration
    • Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously
supports up to 1440 by 900 pixels on the built-in
display and up to 2048 by 1536 pixels on an
external display, both at millions of colors.
I restarted the PowerBook and done Detect Displays from the Displays prefs pane.
    Can anyone offer any ideas?
    TIA,
    Jason Wiggins

    Hi-
The 2048 x 1536 is analog (VGA) resolution. This does not apply to digital monitors.
The inability to support 1920 x 1200 would be due to the requirements of the 30" being far greater than the 9600Mobility with only 64MB of VRAM can provide.
The max advertised resolution of the Powerbook will only apply to the three displays listed (17", 20", 23" ADC Cinema Displays).
Note 5 stipulates that not all resolutions will be available for all displays (third party).
The supported resolutions in the 30" are:
    2560 x 1600 pixels (optimum resolution)
    2048 x 1280
    1920 x 1200
    1280 x 800
    1024 x 640
The 9600 Mobility is giving all that it can. To achieve the 1920 x 1200 resolution on the 30" will require a single link DVI equipped card with more VRAM than you have.

  • What happened to 1280 X 800

I recently upgraded from keynote '06 to '08 '06 had in the theme chooser the 1280 by 800 size which is my screens size (MacBook). what happened to it??? I know that there is a way to change the size later but that is really annoying, is there a way to get it into the list permanently???

The sizes listed in the Theme Chooser are the sizes the selected theme was designed for, so if a particular size isn't available, that means that the theme has been redesigned in KN '08. You could probably go into KN '06 and pull out the 1280 X 800 versions of the themes you used there. (As far as I can tell, however, on my KN '06 installation, none of the default themes have a 1280 X 800 version.)

  • Missing 1280 x 800 in Windows using Boot Camp

Hi there. I have a 2009 Mac mini with nVidia graphics. I'm using an Acer X223w widescreen LCD monitor. In OS X I am able to select 1280 x 800 for my screen resolution. In Windows 1280 x 800 is not an available option. I looked for drivers for this monitor but there are not any for WIndows XP. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can use 1280 x 800 in Windows XP?
    Thanks.

With Windows, it may not be the Monitor, but the Display Adapter. Go to Start>Control Panel>Display>Settings>Advanced>Adapter. If the correct adapter is not installed, it may affect what resolutions you can display. A Monitor can be seen as a generic device, like the Wide Screen Monitor at my job, and there are options available to display wide screen because Windows has the correct display adapter installed. If you need the drive, go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
and use Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products.
    I hope this helps.

The display would not. However, your model does not have a discrete GPU, and the integrated (Intel 3000) would not meet CS6's requirements (any CS6 software) alone.
    However:
    Standard VRAM:
    384 MB
    Maximum VRAM:
    512 MB*
    Details:
Apple reports that "memory available to Mac OS X may vary depending on graphics needs. Minimum graphics memory usage is 384 MB". *If upgraded to 8 GB of RAM (or more), 512 MB will be reserved for video function.
In other words, you would need to upgrade your RAM to 8 GB. The VRAM (video ram) of the processor can exceed its specifications if you upgrade your memory to 8 GB. In order to run the software, you would have to upgrade your RAM first:

  • Using bootcamp for win 7pro 64 system but the resolution of the thunderbolt display is only 1280 X 800, updated grapics driver to Intel HD 3000.  How can I get the quality the same as when it is used with the the mac os?

My thunderbolt 27" display works fine with Mac powerbook 13" 2.8Ghz, however with bootcamp and installed Windows 7 pro 64 bit version installed, the display only has a resolution of maximum 1280 X 800.  I updated the graphics driver to Intel HD3000 with no difference.  Any ideas how to get the same quality as with the mac os?

Just posted a problem I'm having connecting my Jaybird Freedom and iPhone5 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4716045). The Jaybirds connected fine with an iPhone4s and another (forgotten) device so I don't think the problem lies with the Jaybird. I'd be interested if you hear differently.

  • Flash Builder 4.7: Preloader, stageWidth is 1200 but FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.width is 800

    Hello
I am writting code to center my preloader. Using Flash Builder 4.7 when I request this.stage.stageWidth on my Asus tablet I get 1200, then when FlexGlobals.topLevelApplicaiton becomes available I use FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication.width and it gives me the value I am looking for which is 800. I have it working where the display is delayed until the FlexGlobals.topLevelApplication is not null but it would be nice if the loader could start showing from the very start.
One thing I really liked about FB 4.7 was that it resized the main view to fit the screen better vs having it too big. How do I access the "scale" that's being applied so I can just calculate the stageWidth before topLevelApplication is ready.
    Thanks!

  • Flash Player 11.8.800.94 - 11.8.800.95 (beta) crashing.

    Hello Everyone.
I've been heavily involved with the Adobe Flash Player since 2006 mostly involving webcam services and this is the first time ive seen the flash player become completely unstable with regards to the webcam or viewing a webcam feed.  From looking around it looks like this issue is affecting video as well.  I've posted a new bug https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3594351 and would really like to get some feedback/discussion on this...
    Thanks in advance.

Yeah, I had both the preview and stream windows open and I moved them around and stuff just for good measure.  I tried using both my built-in camera and mic and a microsoft lifecam, but no luck on either.
I'm pretty sure based on what I'm seeing in the aggregate crash stats that this is related to a microphone bug that we introduced in 11.8.800.88, but I really want to get a call stack to make sure we don't have something else going on as well.
I haven't had a chance to set up a VM with IE8/9 to try it there yet (busy week), but that's next on my to-do list.  If you can get a crash report from Firefox (get it to crash, then check about:crashes and then click the newest one to submit the report) I can tell you definitively without needing to reproduce it on my end.

  • Two Qs: Help to partition 800 FireWire, &Any FireWire 800 Router/Hub users?

Needed more hard drive, so I added a 2TB-FireWire 800 drive to system. First thing on it is time machine backup. Would like to reconfigure it for the backup along with freeing up space on the main internal drive by moving files/applications, etc onto the external drive if possible. Any guidance would be appreciated!

A couple of thoughts. Most folks find less issues if the apps stay with the OS on the same drive, but you can easily move your Home folder to another drive. However, it is not a good idea to keep your home folder and a Time Machine backup on the same drive. If the drive fails you loose your data and its backup in one fell swoop.
    Here is a detailed version of moving the home folder that I created in the past for this situation;
    1. Go to Macintosh HD/Users/shortname/. Shortname is your Home folder and will have a "house" icon. Copy this folder to the new HDD by drag & drop. When dragging & dropping from one drive to another the originals are not moved, merely copied to the new location. At this point the folder will not have the "house" icon, because it is not yet recognized by Mac OS X as the active Home folder.
    2. Go to System Preferences/Accounts. Click the padlock in the lower left and enter your password to unlock the Accounts pane. Control click on your account's name in the left-side column to reveal an Advanced Options in the contextual menu. Click Advanced Options.
    3. You will only be concerned with the Home Directory option. This is the path that Mac OS X uses to locate your home folder when you login. It will show the path as /Users/shortname.
Click the Choose button and browse to the Home folder that you copied to the new HDD in Step 1. After you select the new home folder the Home Directory path should change to something similar to /Volumes/shortname.
    4. Click OK on the Advance Options dropdown sheet to accept the change. Quit System Preferences. Restart the computer and login as normal.
    5. To confirm that the copied home folder on the new HDD is now the active Home folder, using a Finder window browse to the folder on the new HDD and confirm that it now sports the house icon.
    6. You have successfully moved your Home folder to the new HDD, so the original Home folder in Machintosh HD/Users/shortname/, including all of its contents can be safely deleted.

  • OS X 10.6.8 incompatibility with Firewire 800 or LaCie Firewire 800?

Somewhere along the line my MAC OS X running version 10.6.8 stopped supporting Firewire 800.  When I connect my LaCie remote disks the MAC seems not to see them.  Since I have two separate LaCie disks and have tried several cables, I think I can eliminate LaCie and the cable as being the problem.  I am up-to-date on LaCie's downloads.  Does Apple have a fix for this?

    Reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
You also might try Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). Or you can take it in for service in case it's a hardware issue.

  • Apple Cinema Display and mini display port

I have purchased (for a ridiculous price) an adapter to allow me to use my cinema display with my new macbook pro retina system.  While it does work it doesn't seem to allow me to use anything but best for display which is only 1280x800 resolution which is far less than this monitor supports and looks terrible.  In fact for making me spend $30 for a stupid adapter is is very disppointing.
So first question is can anyone tell me if there is some way to get this to actually work?
Second question along the same line, is that I also purchased an adapter for mini display to VGA for using with projector systems that I sometimes need to hook up to when I go onsite to customer facitilites and within about an hour of being attached to an Acer monitor my entire system seg faulted and crashed with a hard reset.  Equivalent to the Windows blue screen of death.  I've never had this happen before and wondering if this is a known problem?
Thanks for any info you can provide.
    Glenn

Do you have your MacBook Pro in mirror mode or extended desktop mode (System Preferences > Displays)?  If it's in mirror (the default) then the external display will be limited to the MBP's screen resolution.  I use my miniDisplayPort -> DVI adapter all the time with my Sony Bravia TV and have no issues displaying 1920x1080 on the extended desktop.
    Officially, the Retina MBP supports:
    - 2880 by 1800 pixels (Retina mode)
    - 1920 by 1200, 1680 by 1050, 1280 by 800, and 1024 by 640 pixels (scaled mode)
In System Preferences > Displays make sure your display setting is Extended and then select the extended display panel and select 1680x1050.  See if that helps.  If that works, then try the 1920x1200 setting if your display supports it.  BTW, the extended display panel only appears if you actually have the external display connected.
What make/model monitor are you using?
Never heard of a system crashing because it was connected to a projector.  I also use the miniDisplayPort -> VGA adapter to project and have never had a problem.
Is there anything else going on with your MBP?
