1208 working in the GSM networks in the U.S.?

Question: any idea whether the 1208 model would work in the U.S. GSM networks?
On the sales package I got there is this marking
"GSM 900/1800 EGSM850/1900" which I believe indicates that it should work in the GSM networks in the U.S.
When I tried the online phone feature comparing tool on nokia.com, it's also indicated there that the frequency bands include 850/1900.
But the user guide of my phone (9202384/Issue 3 EN) says
"The wireless device described in this guide is approved for use on the GSM 900 and GSM 1800 networks."
That is, the phone would not work on the 850/1900 bands.
So which info is correct?
Thanks

Hi guys,
I found your posts and got strongly interested in.
I'm on a business trip in Canada. I bought Nokia 1208 in Russia, my service provider is also in Russia and gives me international roaming including a one in Canada.
The operating frequencies mentioned on the phone wrapping are exactly the same as “pafr” wrote above. And the ones mentioned in the user guide (2 ones) are the same as “pafr” has in his own guide with the only difference: my user guide is in Russian
The trouble is the phone is not working in Canada. It writes "No network coverage". The phone worked in Russia but it isn’t in Canada.
When I was buying the device, I asked the vendor whether it would work in Canada, and they answered YES. Having faced with the issue, I asked Nokia Support (at their site) what’s wrong with it. But they answered the phone should work and no actual help.
A friend of mine has got Motorola. He also bought the phone in Russia and has international roaming here, in Canada. He took his phone with him to Canada on a business trip too. It works. I borrowed his phone and inserted my SIM card into it. With my SIM card inserted in his phone, the network was immediately found (Rogers). Our location is Belleville, Ontario. Then we put his SIM-card in my Nokia 1208 and it didn't work either. So, it's not an issue with service provider. The service works indeed. It's the issue with the phone itself (Nokia 1208).
I’ve got an expert opinion that the phone is dual band but it comes in two versions, one for USA/Canada (GSM 850-1900) and one for Europe (GSM 900-1800). Obviously I have the European version, so... To my deep disappointment, Nokia Support (neither Canadian nor Russian) did not manage to agree with that and continue answering my phone should work in Canada. That’s all “help” I have had from them. This is extremely strange that Nokia look incompetent with their own product.
Do you know if there’s any chanсe to make my phone work? My be it needs some kind of initial activation, so that it could work then? How did “pafr” make their Nokia work?

  • IPhone US will work in the UK?

    Hi there...
I am going to the US next week and as the price of the iPhone is fairly cheaper than here in Manchester I was wondering if I can buy one there.
    Will it work here?
    Thanks

The actual phone is the same and will work in any GSM network (US,UK, France, Germany etc...) but the security (sim lock, tracking via itunes, etc..) to stop you activating it outside the AT&T network (US) is the issue, that is another (huge) debate......currently there are 899 iphones on ebay uk......(say no more!)

    UNLOCKED iPhone 5
The unlocked iPhone only works on supported GSM networks, such as AT&T in the U.S.
When you travel internationally, you can also use a micro-SIM card for iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S or a nano-SIM card for iPhone 5 from a local GSM carrier.
The unlocked iPhone will not work with CDMA carriers such as Verizon Wireless or Sprint. Limit two per customer

  • I bought a verizon phone for a friend in India and he will be using a GSM network can he use the iphone 5c?, I bought a verizon phone for a friend in India and he will be using a GSM network can he use the iphone 5c?

I bought a verizon Iphone 5c for my friend in India and he will be using a GSM network will this phone work for him?

lol...that's priceless. i golf with 3 friends that used to be verizon users and all switched 2 years ago to get an iphone. i have an android. when they first got them, they would activate their gps golf app just because they could to show off their new toy (even though in phoenix, the courses we play HAVE gps built in to the golf carts...lol). they would input their cores into their apps that kept track of their handicap, scores, driving distance, etc (mind you, my android could do all of this as well). but then it came...we were running an hour and a half late and were meeting our wives for dinner. we play desert courses out side of the city. i called my wife to let her know we'd be late and not to show up for a while. they all 3 could not and asked to use my phone. normally i would've gladly handed it to them, but because they had been SO childish about showing off their toys i simply said "sorry...i can't. you guys all switched carriers and are now KILLIN my minutes since you are no longer in verizon's network." now i had told my wife to call their wives and pass on the message to meet us later....but i didn't tell them that because it was just WAY too much fun watching them sweat for the next 2 hours over how angry their wives were going to be that we would be at the restaurant 2 hours late.
if you REALLY want to up your brothers, you can pay for the hotspot feature ($20/month)...just for a month. the next time they can't send or recieve data, activate your hotspot feature and tell them they are welcome to use your wifi signal from your phone to make their iphone useable again....lol. and if they ever need to borrow it to make a call just let them know that you can't because they burn all of your minutes (if you have a limit) by remaining with at&t...lol.

  •  Will an unlocked iPhone 5 work on the Verizon network?

Will an unlocked iPhone 5 work on the Verizon network? I know this question is probably premature, I don't think apple has mentioned anything about it yet, but I saw that past unlocked iPhones (4 and 4S) would not work on Verizon. I'm a Verizon customer and I want to keep my unlimited data plan, the only way to do this is buy a iPhone at retail, but from what I saw regarding the 4 and 4S I may not be able to do this. I did read that the iPhone 4S is being made in three distinctive models, 1 with a CDMA network and 2 others with varied GSM - LTE networks. I'm hoping this means that an unlocked iPhone 5S can now run on the Verizon network. Any ideas if I'm correct? Thanks.

Honestly I'm not convinced to jump to sprint so quickly. I am monitoring my data as it is, I'm a heavy data user as I watch a lot of movies from Netflix Hulu plus crackle etc. the flip side of this is that I do most of this on my iPad, which I have currently unlimited data on, so I can still get by without unlimited data on my cell, it's more of me not wanting to lose what I have. But thanks for all the info. I'm secretly hoping that apple has redone the unlocked iPhones but I wont lose any sleep over wishful thinking. I'm just quite anal I guess lol. Thanks again

  • Can't connect to GSM networks - What's the problem ?

I am using a iPhone 5 (US/Verizon model) in Canada with a Telus pre-paid sim card and am having connectivity issues
At times it connect to the GSM network and is operational for about 24-48 hrs. Then, it either displays "No service" or "searching" in areas that clearly have connectivity.
In addition to the problems reported on this thread, I am also experiencing an additional issue - that being that the phone seems to not be able to get past the SIM unlock screen.
Specifically, I changed the default Telus SIM PIN code from 0000 to another number. when I power off/on the phone I am not able to get past the SIM unlock screen.
I have tried resetting network settings, toggling Airplane mode and soft reseting the phone to no avail
As with others, am interested to know if this might be a hardware issue or something that could be fixed by verizon, or a software update by Apple.
Also cross posted to the Apple Discussions Forum thread on the same topic https://discussions.apple.com/thread...rt=15&tstart=0

The Verizon iPhone 5, is a CDMA/GSM World Phone. Which means if one is roaming outside the US, the phone can connect to both CDMA and GSM network. Furthermore, as the phone is sold GSM UNLOCKED by Verizon, one can insert another carrier's nano-sim and have it work on their network to not be charged roaming charges

  • Wil ipad air 4G work in the Netherlands on Vodadone network? (A1475)

Wil ipad air 4G work in the Netherlands on Vodadone network? (A1475)
i mean on their 4G network?

May I ask which iPhone you use and which carrier you use whilst visiting the uk.as some still don't have 4g in many areas
I have an iPhone 5 on Verizon (CDMA). I am not entirely sure which carrier I use while in Europe. A friend gets the SIM and sends the SIM to me and it is GSM. The SIM slot on my phone is unlocked for GSM as are all Verizon phones with a SIM slot. When I leave the US
I remove my Verizon SIM (required for LTE/4G) and install the European SIM. The day I travel my friend activates the SIM and I have phone service as soon as I land. The data is limited to 3G or less. Not a real problem as anywhere I go I can generally get WIFI. I just use the data when I am traveling on the train to get schedules and platform information.
Newer models of the phones may support the LTE/4G bands in Europe so that may no longer be an issue. It could also be the provider my friend uses has limited or no LTE/4G service.
You need to carefully consider the warranty issue. If you buy the phone in the US you will have no warranty in Europe. That may be a very real and significant hassle if you have problems with the phone.
I suspect the phones cost more in Europe because of VAT and import duties. We host exchange students from Europe and they generally buy an iPhone when they are living here. I tell them to leave the box and any packing here so that when they go through customs they will not be dinged for duties and if asked where they got the phone just say they brought it with them. Although customs figures almost everyone has a phone and will not be at all concerned about a phone that is not in a box.

If I buy iphone 5 from Sprint ,  can i use GSM network out of the US ?

    hi there,
you could buy it somewhere in Europe. I know Apple sells them unlocked here in Germany and if I am not mistaken also (among others) in France and Italy.
Yet, as Peter wrote, the warranty can become a problem. Not sure whether a one country only rule goes for the European Community as well though.
As for the price, the 16 GB model costs 679,- € (equals roughly 550 £). Currently there is an average delivery time of 4 to 5 weeks.
LTE connections will not work with Orange or Vodafone. Only EE is about to offer a compatible LTE network. DC-HSPA and regular HSPA+ will work fine.
    regards, Chris

  • Will the new T-Mobile Iphone 5 also work on the Att & Verizon networks?

I am a long time T-Mobile user and strongly considering purchasing the new TMO Iphone 5.   What I would like to know is will the TMO phone work on ATT and/or Verizon network if at some point I would ever want to switch.

THe TMobile phone is unlocked.  You make a down payment and then pay the rest of the full price of the phone over 20 months.  There is no contract so you can leave the network any time, but then you would have to finish paying for the iPhone immediately.  It will work with the ATT network but not with Verizon, as it is a GSM phone.

  • HT201274 Can a Sprint Iphone 5 work with T-mobile network? How can one unlock with the MSL code? Sprint is not abiding by the Unlocking Consumer Choice and Wireless Competition Act.  FCC will only enforce if we file more complains.

T-Mobile is a GSM network whereas Sprint is a CDMA network. They are incompatible. Sprint is not obliged to unlock a phone that is still under contract. Their phones may not be capable of being unlocked.

  • Would the 928 work on a GSM carrier if unlocked?

I have read the specifications of the 928 and it says that it works on all the same  frequencies that AT&T and T-Mobile do?  Does that mean that a person could get an unlocked one and use it on a GSM network? If anybody has any knowledge of how this works let me know.
I'm new to the forum, but I have to say that I loved the Lumia 900 I had and the 822 is awesome as well.

It will work on these bands.

    CDMA 800 / 1900
    3G Network HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1700 / 1900 / 2100

    Hi,
So switch a LAN card fix this issue...seems a compatibility issue or maybe some packs or programs you installed recently cause this issue.
Have you manually check the network adapter driver from the PC's manufacture website? sometimes, it will be a time delay before Microsoft push out the driver update.
Check if issue exists in safemode with network, this mode will launch Windows with limited sets of files and drivers.
if you have a restore point, restore the pc to a previous point at which the pc is functioning fine.
