120GB iPod classic: iTunes 8 only?

Hi all,
Apple's specs say that the 120GB iPod classic requires iTunes 8 or later. Has anyone tried using it with previous versions? I'm perfectly content with iTunes 7.4.2 and would rather leave well enough alone.
Thanks!

You are going to have to upgrade to at least iTunes 8 to make things work.

I just purchased a 120gb iPod classic 6th generation from a friend. I have the latest iTunes installed and the software on the iPod is also current. My problem is whenever I'm syncing the iPod and iTunes freezes between the 250- 300th song... I have to manually reset the iPod for the iTunes to run correctly, but then my music isn't added and iTunes tells me I have to restore the iPod... I've done this numerous times only to no avail... Someone please help!!!

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

how do i format it on microsoft ' format portable audio player ' ?
the device has just installed necessary drivers to microsoft upon plugging in
like a say though, not showing up in itunes still
before it recently had this failure, it had shown up as corrupted and that it needed restoring (but i was holding off, as i manually managed all music and was hoping for a way to back it all up, to no avail)
first time posting here, would appreciate a quick answer because tempted to just click the 'restore device defaults' option

  • Which hard drives can I put in my 120gb ipod classic? 30gb, 60gb, 80gb or only a 120gb?

which hard drives can I put in my 120gb ipod classic? 30gb, 60gb, 80gb or only a 120gb?

Physically, the small capacity hardisk (60,80) are thicker at 8mm,
while the 120gb is thinner at 5mm,
    there are some thin hardrive 30 GB (MK3006GAL), 60GB (MK6015GAL) and 80GB (MK8022GAA).
The firmware 2.0 should be able to handle upto 160GB.hardrive.
However the difficulty, is opening the iPod case, and getting the thin hardrive or else your iPod case wont close, better stick to 120GB.

  • When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. All my music appears to have been erased  iPod yet 41GB of data is on it. Help!

When connecting my 120GB iPod Classic I receive the prompt; iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod "Name". It asks me to reset it. If I do this I will lose the contents of the iPod. The iPod shows no music on it yet 41GB of data is on it under "About" on the iPOD itself. It would appear that the music files are still there. I don't want to reset the iPod as it will mean reloading a significant amount of music i.e. my entire CD collection. Any suggestions? Has my iPod died?

(I'll lose all my music right?)
That is correct. A restore wipes all content from the device, resets all settings back to their defaults, and loads a fresh copy of the iPod's software onto the device.
See this excellent user tip from another forum member turingtest2 outlining the different methods and software available to help you copy content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

After all the music is safely in iTunes again, go ahead and restore the iPod to factory settings as it says.

  • My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.

My 120GB IPod classic is not recognized by my Windows 7 PC.  When I plug the ipod into my computer I receive a message saying that the USD device is not recognized.  The Device Manager lists it as an Unknown Device.  I've tried uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it, but it had no affect.  The odd thing is that our other iPod (160 GB Classic) is recognized on the same computer using the same USB cable.  When I plug the ipod in question into another PC, the PC seems to recognize the iPod and lists it in Windows Explorer (iTunes is not installed on this machine).  There seems to be something out of wack with this PC/iPod combo.  Any thoughts on what I can do to try to resolve this issue?  I tried all of the steps listed here, but they didn't help me.  http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you plugging the iPod into a high powered USB 2.0 port on the back of your PC? Have you tried a different USB cable?
What happens if you try to reset the device with it still connected to the PC?
    How to reset iPod
Has this iPod ever worked on this PC or is this the first time you have time you have tried connecting it?
Have you carefully worked through each and every single suggestion in this Apple support document?

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location.  Select the location of your on external hard drive.

  • 120GB iPod Classic Wheel Sensitivity

I bought a 120GB iPod Classic from Best Buy in January and I find the click wheel sensitivity is really, really bad. As in, I have to press the center button in order to scroll most of the time. If that doesn't work, I have to flip the hold switch so it'll work. Even when it does work, the movement is incredibly choppy (you can imagine how annoying this is when I'm trying to fix the volume).
Is this normal or will Apple be able to do something since it's still under its one year warranty? I'm just really frustrated that I dropped $280 dollars on something that doesn't even work well.

I'm having the same problem with a brand new Nano. If that's the way the "new" iPods are working, it's completely unacceptable! Mine hangs up and even pressing the buttons does little to help it because I end up pressing them 5-10 times before anything will happen. I've sent an inquiry to the support team, so it'll be interesting to see what they recommend. I'll re-post if I receive any useful info about it.

  • IPod Classic will only sync with iTunes 11.0.2.26 in disk mode - can you help?

Hello, I am running Windows 8 64 bit with iTunes 11.0.2.26.  This is a new PC and this is the first time I have tried to use it with my iPod.  My iPod classic does not show up in Windows or in iTunes.  The only way I have been able to sync anything is in disk mode.  When syncing in disk mode the iPod appears in Windows and then disappears again when it ihas finished.
I have tried removing and reinstalling iTunes, but this has not sorted out the problem.  The iPod device troubleshooter can not see the device.  I have tried several different usb slots and two different sync cables.  I can not see the iPod in device manager.
My iPod model is MB565 version 2.0.1 PC.
I would like to be able to sync my device as normal and to see if there are any updates available for my iPod classic, which as iTunes currently can't see the device, is not possible.
    Can anyone help please?
    Many thanks!

Well I finally figured out the problem, not thanks to anyone from Apple for that matter. You would asume this problem has happened before and is still happening. The problem was I couldn't copy certain songs anymore from iTunes to my iPod Classic. When trying to copy certain songs I got an error.
If you have this problem it means your song file is corrupted. You can simply check this by trying to copy it from your hard drive to an external hard drive. Here you will also get an error message.
This means you need to replace all the corrupted files by a back up on your hard drive or download it again. I did this and now everything works fine.
Hope this will solve a lot of problems.

  • My laptop iTunes is refusing me access permisson to my 120GB iPod classic

I originally loaded the music on to this iPod.  After 5 months I wanted to load more music onto it, but when i connect the iPod to the computer I get a message, in iTunes, saying that I don't have permission to access, or adjust, the iPod.  Has anyone an idea what I can do about this situation?

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
    1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
    2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
    3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod. And here is a guide about how to transfer iPod classic songs to computer. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

  • Ipod classic & itunes 10

    Dear Apple,
I would like to share a little story  about my little buddy, my iPod.
You see, I got my iPod classic about 3 years ago and everything was great. I went everywhere with it; playing the soundtrack to my life. In good times and in bad times my iPod was there. Like a little boy and his puppy my iPod was the world to me  there was not a single moment where I did not have my "little buddy" with me. Iwas in heaven  when i had my iPod and nothing could bring me down... except a dead battery. For 3 whole years my iPod  and I were inseparable. All was great and this year got even better when my most favorite band, Manowar, released thier newest album in June; almost the same time where itunes had an update. As son as i got the album from my local music store i quickly downlaoded it to itunes along with the update. after the install was done i reached for my usb cord to sync the songs, and what i saw next i could not believe  a window popped up saying "USB device not recognized" i tryed over and over again and still no use . I went to the iPod forums to see if i could find an anwer, there were many topics some useful some not. I followed all the instructions (reset, reload, try again, put it in disk mode, restore, reinstall) to the letter. to my surpirsed it worked, I was so relived. I was so happy that i didnt lose my "little buddy". But then, a few months later my iPod was running a bit slow,so i plugged it back in to my computer thinking that i can just restore it  and it will be fine. I was wrong.  as soon as i plugged it back in the same window popped up again  "USB device not recognized" so i tryed all the  stuff I did before  and got it connected to windows BUT it did not show on itunes . i was shocked  so i put it into disk mode and saw it lised on itunes. I went to restore it so  my iPod was'nt slow  and about half way through it stoped restoring saying " failed to restore a file is missing"  i had to think for a minute while i picked my jaw off from the floor. How could a file be missing if it has never been attached to a computer in months? I tried EVERYTHING to get to work again. I looked on the forums again for help  and even 3rd party website all say the same thing "reset, reload, try again, put it in disk mode, restore, reinstall"  I even did a virus check nothing would work my little buddy laid there on my desk motionless, lifeless, not even a spark so i unplugged my buddy to see if there was any sign of life and to see if my songs were still there. All 6000 songs have parished at the hands of itunes 10 only 80 songs remian inside my buddy. I was depressed and shocked I couldnt speak for 15 minuets i tried to resync and resync every time i did its either "USB device not recognized" or not showing up no matter what i did. Even when it did sync it would stop half-way through with an error saying " file not found could not sync" again my buddy was not moving  no matter how many times i performed CPR ( by that i mean disk mode a nd restoring). I looked deep into the forumes for another answer and on a a few  i found that itunes 10 was no loger compatable with iPod classic, i was in disbelif, shocked, my eyes wide open, jaw on the floor, and brain matter sprayed across my room. How can Apple do this? Release an update to make all previous iPods not compatable. Apple im so disappointed. While you may have great products, your sevice and your loyalty to your customers are  ******. If anyone at Apple has any humanity to give me my little buddy back, please help me

  • Cost of replacing 20GB ipod classic with 120GB ipod classic in india

my IPOD classic of 20GB is not functioning and the support center have said that I can go in for a replacement of this device by submission of this one and paying for a 120GB replacement one. Has anyone done the same in India.

Thank you Bka131! I have exactly the same problem (your most common: appears, then disappearing). I already spent DAYS to try, remove iTunes, drivers, re-intall, uninstall any competitor SW that is able to sync music...
Today, I tried with the latest iTunes just issued (12.1.0.71) and still the same issue: my iPod classic appears for 1 sec in iTunes, then disapear...
This is incredible. Do you know if some people ARE able to sync their iPod Classic with iTunes 12.x? Or do Apple wants to kick out all the "old" iPod Classic and force us to buy new iPxx? I can not believe they could not fix such big bug more quickly ...I did not find any official announcement from Apple that this is a known but unsolved bug ... Very strange as this seems to touch many users…
Do you have a safe place where I can download iTunes 11.xxx?

  • 120GB iPod Classic space issues.....

    Hey all,
One of the main reasons I purchased an iPod Classic was that I could store all my large files safely on it. With that, I cannot put any files (outside of media from iTunes) on it, even though iTunes says it has 81.77GB free space. Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

How big are these files and do you use Windows?
If you use your iPod as a disk with a Windows PC, bear in mind that the FAT32 file system can only accommodate files that are smaller than 4GB. No matter how much free space there is on your iPod, you can't copy files that are larger than that.
Also worth bearing in mind is that the iPod is not reliable enough to use it as a long term storage device, and these forums are littered with posts from people who decided to use it as such and ended up losing all their data.

  • How can I play my Audible .aax files on my 120GB IPod Classic?

    Hi all,
I have an IPod classic which can store 120GB of data and I think it is sixth generation, but am not too sure.  I've downloaded some audio books from Audible in .aax format and want to copy them onto my IPod but I can't seem to be able to get them to sync in ITunes.  Does anyone know what the issue is?
    Thanks,
    Sachin

Have you imported the audiobooks into your iTunes library? (Yes, I know that may be an obvious thing - but I simply want to make sure.)
If you have them in your library and you have perfomed a Sync, have you tried using the Search facility on your iPod to see if they are on it, but simply not where you expect them to be? (I don't have any audiobooks, but Podcasts and movies sometimes end up in a different section to the one I expect.)
If you find it, but not where you expect it to be, condier the following. To be an Audiobook, the file must be listed as Audiobook in iTunes. So it's not enough for it to be downloaded as an audiobook. Once you find the file in iTunes, look at File/Get Info/Options>Media Kind. If the Media Kind is not Audiobook, thta's why it's not in Audiobooks on the iPod. Change the Media Kind in iTunes and then Sync the iPod to iTunes. That should sort it out.
