120Hz

*I am considering getting a 120HZ HDLCD my understanding is when running at this rate the system adds frames to compensate for speed variance, I am considering getting fcp and my questions are;
If I make or add frames of my choice to lesser fps videos can I save them at 120 fps in fcp?
also how high a frame rate can one set in fcp?
What is the best application to save said 120p fps video in?*
120Hz refresh rate
The digital display technologies (LCD, plasma, DLP, LCoS, etc.) that have replaced picture tubes areprogressive scan by nature, displaying 60 video frames per second — often referred to as "60Hz." HDTVs with 120Hz refresh rate employ sophisticated video processing to double the standard rate to 120 frames per second by inserting either additional video frames or black frames. Because each video frame appears for only half the normal amount of time, on-screen motion looks smoother and more fluid, with less smearing. It's especially noticeable viewing fast-action sports and video games. This feature is available on an increasing number of flat-panel LCD TVs.

If I make or add frames of my choice to lesser fps videos can I save them at 120 fps in fcp?
FCP doesn't have an option to edit ANY format at 120fps. That video standard does not exist. The highest standard that does is 720p at 60fps. You cannot add frames to do this. That is not possible with any edit system. What the TVs do they all do internally...and that adding of frames is a HORRIBLE thing, IMHO. I don't know what on earth they were thinking. Filmmakers strive for the 24fps look and shoot film at 24fps. They don't shoot it at 120fps, because that looks just plain wrong. 120fps shooting is mainly used for slow motion...shoot 120fps, play back at 30fps, or 24fps.
also how high a frame rate can one set in fcp?
60fps. But you must be at 720p for that. The standard for 60fps is 720p. 1080 has the 30fps standard. There is no such thing as a 120fps format. Period. No professional uses it...so put that frame rate out of your mind.
What is the best application to save said 120p fps video in?*
None.
The paragraph you downloaded is correct, but the TV is doing the processing of the imagry on it's end. None of that happens while shooting, nor editing. And it is just plain wrong, and needs to go away. I will say with GOOD confidence that no professional edits at 120fps.

  • Is there a way to run firefox at a higher frame rate for those with monitors capable of 120hz?

I noticed that IE is smooth as silk when browsing websites compared to firefox. Is there an add-on or a setting I can change so that I can take advantage of my monitor which runs at 120hz?

Thanks, how would you synchronize the loops?  I have gone through the Getting Started exercises and manual.
Why would synchronization matter? Did you want them to run independantly at their own speed or not?
Regardless, there's a synchronization pallette with functions for this, as Occurance.
Other solutions include a common loop counter and a case structure executing every X'th iteration, or having the faster loop send a queue or event every X'th loop that controls the slower loop.

  • 120hz in Os X

    Hi
I have a question about my mac mini late 2012 running os x mavericks on a Benq xl2420t monitor.
The monitor it self has a 120hz refresh rate but iam unable to hit that in os x. The maximum im getting is 100hz using a mini display to display port cable. I have no issues getting 120hz in windows. Any ideas anyone
    thank you so much

I wonder if OS X caps out at 100hz. I called apple care and even them couldn't confirm.
You could try experimenting with SwitchResX which allows you to create additional customer resolutions and frame rates. For example it is widely used to create proper 24p settings for use with TVs. OS X itself does not do proper 24p only 50i and 60i (on TVs). There is a trial version of SwitchResX available.
This would only work if it is a software issue and not a limitation of the Mac video interface.
    See http://www.madrau.com/indexSRX4.html
After doing a search the best I have seen is that it might be possible to do 720p resolution at 120Hz although in theory the HDMI version supported by the Mac mini (1.4) should support 1080p at 120Hz. It maybe that using a dual-link Thunderbolt to DVI adapter might help see http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter

It suggests DisplayPort 1.2 is needed which is supported in Haswell chipset machines which unfortunately the Mac mini does not yet use.

  • Samsung Syncmaster 2233rz, help getting 120hz

So I have this monitor mentioned in the title of this post, it's a 3D monitor and is suppose to display at 120hz natively. It's native resolution is 1680x1050@120hz, I have no problem setting it's native resolution in 'nvidia-settings' (I have NVGF560GTX). The problem is I can only set 60hz on other resolutions, e.g.(640x480,800x600,1024x768) etc.etc.....
Before someone tries to tell me or find out if 120hz is supported on those resolutions, IT IS so we can just drop that thought right away.
I need 120hz on those lower resolutions for games, e.g. 120hz on quake live@640x480.
    Thanks.

It's pretty depressing that I have to dual boot because of this problem... Can anyone point me into the right direction at least ?

  • I am using a 42" Vizio 120hz hdmi TV for editing but...

I am using a 42" Vizio 120hz hdmi TV 1920/1080p for editing but when there is action in the video, like fast dancing, I get a thin 1 pixel wide horizontal tear in the video monitor section of cs5.5.  I have tryed 3 other tv's like this & it still happens when there is a lot of movement in the picture. HD footage does it more often then SD. It is barely noticable but annoying. Does anone know what to do? I have tryed cutting the resolution to 1/2 but that doesn'nt really help.

You're saying the TV is being used as the computer monitor?
In that case, don't worry about it.  Premiere Pro's built-in monitors are for content viewing only.  Minor glitches can be safely ignored.
For quality control, you need a properly calibrated external TV.

  • 120Hz monitor for macbook air

Hi I was planning to buy the samsung 3D 23" Full 120hz monitor (LS23A750DS) to connect to my MBA late 2011, it has a displayport and an HDMI cable, does the mac support 120hz, I've been searching around and people say no but that is like 2 years ago so I want an updated answer. And if it does what cable should I get to connect to the monitor?

As the signal is digital your TV will be seen by the MacBook as 1080 PAL or NTSC with no options to change the refresh rate, but will work fine. We use a similar model as a presentation screen.
As it turns out a LS23A750DS really is a monitor and not a TV (I initially thought it was a TV too).  So it may be that the EDID info sent from the monitor to the computer may (or may not) include refresh rate options.  That is why I couldn't definitively say whether such options would be presented by the Displays preferences.

  • 120hz possibly defective? (Sony Bravia Z KDL46z4100)

Thanks in advance with any help provided.
I recently purchased the Sony Bravia Z with 120hz model KDL46z4100. I have tried in vain to mimic the in-store motion blur reduction with no success.
I am using a blu-ray disc for testing in order to get a true 1080p signal. Both a PS3 and Sony blu-ray player have been used. I originally started with a cheap $20 Philip's HDMI cable but last night decided to try the Monster 1000 ultra-high speed cable (both of which seem to produce an identical picture).
I have reviewed several different websites for manually customizing the signal on the TV and at this point feel I have changed every setting possible on the TV (MotionEnhancer, Cinemotion, etc.). I have also played with all of the settings of the PS3 and Sony blu-ray player. All three devices are fully updated with any firmware/software updates released. The whole reason I took the chance on the Monster cable is because it was the last change I could think to make to reproduce the quality.
Displays at Best Buy and another local retailer both show a better quality of blur reduction than mine. And yes, I have even written down their display model settings and tried them at home.
I am open to any suggestions as to what could possibly be the problem at this point. Is it possible the 120hz feature is simply not working on the TV?
    Thanks again.

Hello, I work in Store 170 in Brentwood, Tn in the Magnolia Home Theater Room.  That is a great Tv, nice contrast, video color and even that 120hz, that doesn't seem to like you right now.
It's a good thing you switched your hdmi cable.  The one thing that people people look at is price,  and the thing they don't look at is how much the cable can process.  If you look at the back of the package or sometimes, like on the monster 1000, the front, it will tell you a number like 10.2, or even as low as 2.  This is what allows that faster video to pass through.  More than likely the cable you started with was a really low number... Using that cable was stopping the 120hz before it even got to your tv. (a good alternative to the monster 1000 for the price, is the rocketfish in the black package... it can also do the 120 and a fast pass through)
Another thing that might come into play is the setting on your tv.  When I setup a new tv on an endcap or for a display, when in the store turn the 120 on low, or if it is animation we turn it on medium.  If you turn it too high you will get almost like a glow around the main images.  I usually tell customers to leave it on low, Until you get hardcore into sports.  You can find that setting in the menu, picture, and i believe it is advanced settings at the bottom,  I will double check that at work.  The old sony menu was easier to find the 120 settings like in the xb4.
Other than those 2 things i haven't heard of any other problems, let me know how it turns out.

  • Does NVS 4200m support 120hz on external monitor?

I ask in reference to using 3dvision but I've connected a 3dvision capable monitor (essentially supports 120hz refresh) but the driver does not list 120hz refresh option.  Nvidia website isn't clear on the NVS 4200m capabilities so can someone tell me whether or not I should be able to get 120hz refresh out of the card?
    Thanks

Displayport.  For now I've got a passive Displayport to DVI adapter so it only does single link but I've tried running 1280x720x120hz which is within the capability of single link - but no 120hz option.
Window might not be detecting the display correctly, see if you can find a driver for the monitor. If not you'll have to force it.

Maybe you should try asking this in the Boot Camp Forum, where folks more familiar with Windows might see it. Just a thought.

My XG270HU monitor only works up to 120hz 1440p. I have two gtx 760 cards and I have tried connecting it to both of them SLI on and off. I am using the included DisplayPort cable but I have also tested another DP cable but it didnt help. After checking from reddit and other sites it seems that I am not the only one having this issue. Anyone have any ideas or maybe a possible fix for this problem?

    Turretron,
Ha Ha Ha! My bad on the G-Sync and FreeSync mixup, I was working on a G-Sync monitor question someone asked while working on your question and I got my wires crossed.
Well, we can bring the monitor in and make sure there isn't anything wrong with it, I do not personally think that there is anything wrong with the monitor, but we will make sure that it has the latest firmware update just to make sure.

  • 120Hz monitor usage

NVidia GeForce GT 330M on the Core i7 MacBook Pro 15"
I have the Asus VG236H 120Hz 3D Vision LCD Monitor. I also have the DVI Dual-Link adapter from Apple that they assured me at the store would allow me to run the MacBook Pro at 120hz on the monitor.
So far, I have not been able to make any sort of changes in the Display prefs.
    Am I doing something wrong?

Still working on the issue on my end.
Although I am using Windows on my Vaio, I would like to be able to hook a Macbook Pro up to the same monitor (I have the Dual Link DVI display port adapter)...but right now I'm more concerned with getting the Vaio working as that is my primary gaming laptop (want to bring the 120hz LCD + Vaio to lans).
No progress really yet so far....
BSteely - as far as I can tell, the laptop dock does do Dual Link (link: http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=1055 1&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921666055167&tab=featuresTab#specific ations ), but I'm not 100% on that. The cable is definitely dual link, but as you pointed out, wont help if the dock doesn't support it.
Hooking the monitor up either way, DVI-D using the dock or HDMI direct from the Vaio Z, Windows 7 doesn't detect the monitor, it just comes up as Generic PNP Monitor. It appears as you may be right about it not getting the EDID as I did somewhere get something about it not getting the DDC info.
Anyway..I'll keep you posted and if I get it working Ill try getting the MBPro to work.

  • 120hz is not supported on 800x600 (MSI AE2420 3D)

Hi guys, i buy a MSI AE2420 3D AIO PC today, i asked the company about the maximum screen refresh rate support of the LCD and they told me it supports 120hz.
now when i go to display settings and set the resolution on the 800x600 i cant put the refresh rate on 100hz, the maximum supported is 75hz?!
i understand that the LCD supports 120hz only on 1920x1080 full hd 3D mode, am i right?!

Yeap 120hz make no sense @ 800x600 but when you are a counter-strike gamer this will be important for you
Also im on your side, dont know wht 120hz mode is darker, but i think it should reason around 3D Viewing! :-?

  • Help with DYNEX Model: DX-55L150A11 - 55" 120Hz LCD Television

Is there a Software Update available for this television??  I have trouble when I switch channels on the Cable box (TWC set top box).  The sound disappears and the only way I can get it back is to cycle through the HDMI ports on the Dynex remote or turn off/on the Dynex remote.  Seems like the Dynex TV loses sync for the AUDIO and it only "RESYNCS" when the HDMI ports are cycled.  I cycle through the HDMI ports, because that is the method of connection between the Cable Set-top box and the TV.
Also, the 120 Hz operation is blurry during a football game.  I need to shut off the 120 Hz processing and watch the raw video and it is not blurry.  WHY???
Overall, the TV is operating okay, just wondering if a Software Update would help this TV????

There is currently no software update available for your TV. However, your sound problem is caused by a communication issue between your cable box & TV via the HDMI cable. An easy test is to plug in another source (like a DVD or game consol) to the same HDMI input, with the same cable, problem goes away, it's the cable box / provider issue. The TV does not know what is plugged in, it's just processing the information it receives. TWC boxes (likely Scientific American or Motorola built) have many problems with HDMI communication. The quickest, easiest, cheapest solution as suggested by cmartin is to switch to component cables. Your TV can process full resolution HD through the component inputs eliminating the troublesome HDMI communication line. Cmartin's other issue sounds like an overloaded cable system and his provider should be running additional lines if useage is overwhelming the bandwidth. HDMI has been troublesome since it's creation and with more products coming out of different countries with no communication standard, everything is 'talking a different language' and compounding the problem.
Regarding your 120hz question, using this function without a true 120hz (frames per second) input signal (currently only used by 3D primarily, and a few select BluRay and video games), the TV's processor takes available incoming frames and averages them together to create additional 'false frames' which are added in between (frame 1-2-3 becomes 1-1.5-2-2.5-3-3.5, etc.) often causing a choppy or blurring effect with normal video conditions. It's purpose and only real current benefit is under very fast moving video conditions when the gap between frames may be more evident.
