1252 LAP won't join WLC

Hi all
I'm having an issue with a 1252 LAP that is connected to the WLC over a WAN link.
Basically, it won't associate. The following is taken from a console into the LAP:
*Mar 1 00:00:07.799: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface GigabitEthernet0, changed state to up
*Mar 1 00:00:08.799: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface GigabitEthernet0, changed state to up
*Mar 1 00:00:26.851: %LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DISCOVERY
*Mar 1 00:00:27.003: Logging LWAPP message to 255.255.255.255.

%LWAPP-3-CLIENTEVENTLOG: Controller address 10.x.x.x obtained through DHCP

%SYS-6-LOGGINGHOST_STARTSTOP: Logging to host 255.255.255.255 started - CLI initiated
%LWAPP-3-CLIENTEVENTLOG: Performing DNS resolution for CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.nation.radix

%LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to JOIN

%LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DOWN
IOS Bootloader - Starting system.
Xmodem file system is available.
The ap-manager interface is configured correctly and there isn't a duplicate IP address.
The LAP was initially stand alone and was converted to LWAPP.
The MTU over the WAN link is 1500 bytes.
All I'm getting from the WLC debugs is:
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx Received LWAPP DISCOVERY REQUEST from AP 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx to 00:19:xx:xx:xx:xx on port '29'
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx LWAPP Discovery Request AP Software Version: 0x3003300
Mon Jul 20 11:42:59 2009: 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx Successful transmission of LWAPP Discovery Response to AP 00:22:xx:xx:xx:xx on port 29
So basically the join messages don't seem to reach the WLC. In fact they don't even seem to reach the local router on the remote subnet. The discovery packets are seen on the local router but the joins don't seem to appear at all.
I'm not sure if it's a latency issue. Average latency over the WAN link is under 70ms.
I'm assuming the certificate on the WAP is MIC and the MAC details have been entered into the WLC AP Security policies for authentication. I'm not seeing any debugging messages relating to bad authentication at all.
I can't debug from the LAP as it's LWAPP, obviously.
I've been through many Cisco documents trying to troubleshoot the problem, including this http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_tech_note09186a00808f8599.shtml, but can't find a solution.
We're running WLC version 4.2.130.0.
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Brodie

I assume you have connected to router's AUX and doing reverse telnet. You should be getting Password: prompt on your LAP's console. Password and Enable are both Cisco. Below is console output from my lab's 1250 LAP after erasing configuration (which can only be initiated from controller). In my case, the vlan is not configured with Option 43 and no proper DNS, so LAP doesn't join the controller.
By the way, your best bet might be to convert this LAP back to IOS and then back to LAP again. Use this method:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918
Do you have "Authorize APs against AAA" checked under Security > AP Policies in any of your WLCs ?

I am having a problem getting LAPs that are in other subnets to join our WLC. If I take the LAP and place it on the same VLAN/subnet as the WLC, it joins as expected. If I move it to another subnet, I get the following:

Can you provide more information such as:
    1. How many APs can the WLC4402 support and how many are currently joined?
    2. What is your WLC's firmware?
    3. Is there a possibility of a duplicate IP address in your network?

    my question is :
is it possible to make LAP join WLC with out DNS,if yes how ?

    Hi Yhab,
    There are other ways besides DNS to help in the AP and WLC Discovery process. Have a look in this good doc;
Lightweight AP (LAP) Registration to a Wireless LAN Controller (WLC)
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a00806c9e51.shtml#topic2
    For the Static entry problem;
If this AP was ever registered you can use this command from the LAP CLI to clear the LWAPP configuration on the LAP:
    clear lwapp private-config
This allows you to use the AP LWAPP static configuration commands again.
    Here is an example:
    Enable (enter password)

  • Lap 1142N not joining WLC2106

    Hi,
I have a 1142N which does not join the WLC when connected via a 2960 switch. When I connect a different lap 1142N to the same port on the same switch using the same cables, it does join the lap to the WLC. And when I connect the first lap directly to the WLC it also works fine.
Resetting the failing lap does not fix the problem. All software levels on the lap are the same.
Anyone an idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Jeroen

thnx for your support so far.
All the AP's are the same, AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 v05. I have two AP's which work fine when connected via the 2960 therefore I assume that the switch, wlc, vlan and dhcp configuration is fine. The thirth one is giving me some challenges ;-)
Note: the non working AP is only not working when connected via de 2960, it is working fine when directly connected to the WLC2106.
@David, where can i find the regulatory domain setting?

  • 2x 1252s unable to fully join 2504

    Hi everyone :)
And thank you for an awesome resource!
I was lucky enough to get my hands on this 2504 at work for labbing and had set the goal for last night to convert the two 1252s to lwap and join them with the controller. Just a simple ssid and thats it.
However imagin my frustration when i saw the access points register however with their radios turned off and no way of turning them back on. These are APs i've had running in autonomous mode for some time now so they work just fine.
Fortunately, and since the setup is just a lab for now, i had my console cable hooked to one of the aps so i could see the boot process running. What i have snipped in here below is a part of the console log from after AP01 booted. I googled for some time to figure this out and during my trouble shooting i toggled the dhcp client to reproduce the error message. Same thing, highlightet below, on both aps!
Just a note, during initial setup on the controller i checked both the US and DK for language / region selection. I found a case with the wrong regulartory domain between controller and ap with similar symptoms as highlightet below. I changed the setting to just DK and kept working, since the APs are ETSI regulatory.
What is the problem? And what can i do about it :)
    Thanks in advance!
    /Kim

    Hi again :)
Thanks for your reply Leo, I was about to 'sh' everything to you guys when the radio led on one of the APs suddently turned on! ;)
Actually, I upgraded the controller to v7.6.130.0. And then, reset the controller to factory defaults... Without checking if the upgrade had worked. After that woila.
So since this is a lab I will downgrade tonight to v7.6.120.0 to try and reproduce the error.
However there was one small detail that baffled me, when i set up the lab I added both US and DK to the language list. I unchecked US when troubleshooting the problem. Then before the upgrade I noticed a log message mentioning a problem with the regulatory domain on the joining AP. The message said something about changing the domain from () to (DK). From nothing to DK. Every time it rebooted...
Anyway, now it works. Thanks Scott and everyone else.
    /Kim

  • OEAP 600 cannot join WLC with auth-list enable

I've got a strange problem here. In the office, my OEAP 600 can join WLC if there is no MAC authentication. When i enable MAC authentication at WLC, AP will fail to register. However, I try it at home and it works with both MAC authentication enable or disable. I suspect it is because of firewall in my office, but there shouldn't have any different in discovery and joining procedure for AP with MAC authentication enable or disable. I'm confused here. Please help.

    Justin,
Below is error summary from WLC:
    Last Error Summary
    Last AP Message Decryption Failure----
Last AP Connection Failure     ---------      Timed out while waiting for ECHO repsonse from the AP
Last Error Occurred                ---------      Lwapp join request rejected
Last Error Occurred Reason    ---------      RADIUS authorization is pending for the AP
The error reason is probaly because I haven't added AP MAC address to ACS. With the same AP, at home using ADSL link, i have no problem.
    Thanks.

  • Accesspoint shouldnot join WLC

    Hi
I have WLC which is having 70 accesspoint associated with it.The model num of accesspoint is 1242.But if any one from outside bring one same model of accesspoint and tried to connect it should not connect.Did any one knows how to configure the controller for this or any other option.

One other thing you can do is to make sure you remove option 43 from dhcp, remove dns entry if one was configured, remove any dhcp scope on the subnet the management and ap manager is on, disable otap on the wlc, and remove any ip-helper that is pointing to the wlc. All these features are to help LAP's find the WLC so that they can be part of your WLAN. Once your LAP's are up, there is no reason to have these still configured.

  • My iMac won't join the correct network

This is a new iMac with Lion.  The network is ok because all my other devices work fine with it.  The network is in the list and when I select it my mac joins without problem, but won't join it automatically.  I've also tried to move my network up in the list but that doesn't seem to work either.

Mine is the only network listed in the Perferred Networks List in the advanced settings.  The "Remember networks this computer has joined" is checked.
The problem is that when I wake my computer up, it won't find the network.  I updated my airport extreme last week and this problem started after that.  However, none of the other devices using this network are having any problems.

  • Cisco 2702I WAPs won't join 5508 WLC

I haven't been able to get a few WAPs to join my existing WLC and network.  They don't seem to be pulling any IP address or talking to DHCP, but everything has been already configured and the same as the other buildings that I have deployed these WAPS on.  any thoughts?

    Hi,
First check that a DHCP pool is configured for APs to pull IP address then only AP will be try to discover the WLC.
Most of the time these problem(AP join) arise when you don't have correct software version on WLC.
For 2702 AP, you need at-least 7.6.120.0 version on WLC.
    Here is the matrix: http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/compatibility/matrix/compatibility-matrix.html
Fore more info, paste the info which Rasika asked.
    Regards

  • AP not joining WLC b/c of DHCP.

This is the first time that I've dealt with a WLC, so I'm trying to do a real simple setup. I have a WLC 2106 and a few LAP 1141N's. I'm trying to set them up on a single VLAN, no RADIUS server, and I want my router to handle DHCP (not the WLC). Here's the info I setup the WLC with:
Welcome to the Cisco Wizard Configuration Tool
Use the '-' character to backup
    System Name [Cisco_94:40:40]: WLC
Enter Administrative User Name (24 characters max): cisco
Enter Administrative Password (24 characters max): *****
    Management Interface IP Address: 192.168.3.5
    Management Interface Netmask: 255.255.255.0
    Management Interface Default Router: 192.168.3.1
Management Interface VLAN Identifier (0 = untagged): 0
Management Interface Port Num [1 to 4]: 1
Management Interface DHCP Server IP Address: 192.168.3.1
AP Manager Interface IP Address: 192.168.3.6
AP-Manager is on Management subnet, using same values
AP Manager Interface DHCP Server (192.168.3.1):
    Virtual Gateway IP Address: 1.1.1.1
    Mobility/RF Group Name: GroupRF
    Network Name (SSID): Test
Allow Static IP Addresses [YES][no]: yes
Configure a RADIUS Server now? [YES][no]: no
Warning! The default WLAN security policy requires a RADIUS server.
Please see documentation for more details.
Enter Country Code (enter 'help' for a list of countries) [US]: US
    Enable 802.11b Network [YES][no]: Yes
    Enable 802.11a Network [YES][no]: no
    Enable 802.11g Network [YES][no]: yes
    Enable Auto-RF [YES][no]: yes
    Configuration saved!
    Resetting system with new configuration...
When I login to the web interface of the WLC (https://192.168.3.5) it doesn't show any AP's as joining even though I have one plugged in to the WLC. I console'd into the AP and this is the error that keeps on repeating:
*Mar  1 00:51:45.962: %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: Not sending discovery request AP does
    not have an Ip !!
Am I missing something? I already checked the WLC, and the date/time is setup correctly. And I know my router (at 192.168.3.1) is handing out DHCP. Everything is on the same subnet so I don't understand why I'm having such a hard time with this. I've tried my hardest searching online but haven't found anything. Any help would REALLY be appreciated. Thank you very much.
P.S. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

The answer is that LWAPP / CAPWAP APs need to be connected to an access port on a swtich (configured with the proper VLAN) as they do nothing more than pass the traffic to the WLC through the LWAPP / CAPWAP tunnel.  The WLC ethernet ports are configured as trunks and can not be change. This is because the WLC is where all the VLAN tagging takes place.
    Hope that helps,
    Scott
