128GB HDD Limit? (Old G4 Tower)

Hello everyone, I just purchased a SeaGate HDD that is 500GB IDE and for some reason my old G4 (first gen I think) will only show that it's 128GB. I popped the HDD into my PC and sure enough it was 500GB, so i formatted it to NTFS for lulz and put it back in my g4 tower and this time I booted the Mac OS X Server 10.5 disk and checked it with disk utility and it said Capable: 128 used: 500GB .
I looked on the forum and checked google and it seems the hardware can only support up to a 128GB HDD? I can't imagine this being true... Even for such a old box I would think it wouldn't have a limit on how big the HDD can be.
So is there any work around? Or anything I can do to install a bigger HDD in this old G4 Tower? Or is it doomed to its 50GB HDD forever?

48-bit LBA was added to the QuickSilver 2002. You stumbled into a G4 MDD forum, where 'large drive' support is native.
Perhaps you recall an earlier era when drives of 100MB were over $1000 and considered bleeding edge?
My Blue 'Smurf came with 6GB drive. So 120GB was not available and 20x storage capacity, and 45GB drives for under $200??? well, my 9GB 10K Atlas cost me $209 at the time.
You could use it on a PCI PATA controller that will add support for "large drive." or FireWire. Better yet would probably be FW800 PCI and case and use SATA for internal drives.

Also, OS 9 can't boot from partitions that are larger than 195GB! probably because no one could test or envision OS 9 on such drives.

I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive.  What kind of of hard drive must I purchase so that it works with the Tower?  There is not a lot to transfer.

    MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.

  • Connect a macbook pro to an old G4 tower

Hi, I want to connect an old G4 tower to my macbook pro to get the old G4 drive's files. The Macbook pro that I have doesn't have a firewire port - ony usb and ethernet and the G4 has ethernet and usb but I don't have a keyboard to connect to it. Is it possible then? Thanks!

Network them on your LAN and you'll need to connect a keyboard to the G4 to check and change any setting that need changed.

  • New iMac looks for old Mac tower

I purchased a new iMac recently and used Migration Assistant to move my Documents folder over from my old G5 Tower. To the best of my memory, I did not use Migration Assistant to move system files or applications over to the iMac.
Once I thought I had everything configured just right, 3 things occured where the new iMac was looking for the old G5 Tower:
    (1) at startup, a dialog twice appeared, indicating that the old G5 could not be found. I used the Accounts/Log In Items to disable start up items that were "unidentified." First problem solved.
    (2) When I try to print, the iMac looks for my old G5 when I first try to access a pulldown menu in the print dialog window, and after quite awhile an alert message appears indicating that the G5 server is unavailable. I've tried deleting all installed printers and then reinstalling them, to no avail.
    (3) In my folder windows, under the Places list, there is a favorite folder that is repeated twice, one that links to the "04_FT" folder on the new iMac, and an identically named item that does not function as a link (but a folder with this name did live on the old G5) and I'm unable to remove it from the list. When I Control click on it, the only option I get is to "Open Sidebar Preferences."
I suspect that both (2) and (3) are similar "ghost" references back to the old G5, but I don't know how to remove them.
I would very much appreciate any help or suggestions that the iMac community might have to offer.

I would recommend starting over and instead of using Migration Assistant this time using Setup Assistant. They are cousins, similar but different. First SA is more reliable and second it will not create a second user account. Because you are migrating from a PPC machine I would migrate everything EXCEPT applications. You should manually install your apps, this will give you the opportunity to udate the ones that need it and I'm sure there are many. You may even apps that won't run on Intel based machines so why migrate them at all? You can use the Setup Assistant tips beginning at "Second chance...." You can either restore from your old machine or from one of it's backups. I think you'll see it's a pretty clean process, something you passed over (I'm not sure why) when  you turned on the new iMac for the first time.

    See if this helps...
Open Keychain Access in Utilities, use Keychain First Aid under the Keychain Menu item, then either check the Password under that item, change it, or delete it and start over.
Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password...

If Keychain First Aid finds an issue that it cannot repair, or if you do not know your keychain password, you may need to reset your keychain.

  • I did it....Old Quicksilver Tower 800 Meg.  with new CPU

I have a old Quicksilver tower which was 800 Megahertz...I put in the OWC chip in it some months ago which upgraded it to 2 gigahertz...I have a 40gig HD. That is the biggest problem. With this software you need at least 80 gigs. However, I had to ease the drive and reformat it, but it works. I don't have a dvd drive in this old rig so I used a Macbook laptop and firewire connected it-laptop was the target drive and it installed. I could have taken a long nap....but I was to anxious to see if it would fail...It is really nice!

I didn't even know they made 2 GHz G4s. It's cool you got it working though

  • Satellite M30-604 only seeing 128GB HDD capacity from a 320GB HDD

    I have a M30-604 with XP-SP2 and bios version 1.7
I've installed a new internal 2.5" 320gb hard disk - but XP disk manager only sees 128gb total capacity. There's not even any unallocated space.
Is the phoenix bios 48bit LBA compatible?

    Hi!
During the old IDE interface its only possible to use 128GB disk space and so you dont see the full capacity of 320GB.
BIOS update cant solve this problem because its hardware related and so you have to live with this issue.
Alternative you bring the 320GB HDD back and buy another one, e. g. 120GB.
    Bye

  • Can I use my old g5 tower as a scratch disk for my Macbook Pro for Photoshop?

I just made the laptop jump away from towers and am a little shocked by how much difference a smaller scratch disk makes. Can I use my old tower as a scratch disk to help out my new Macbook Pro?
Any other tweaks I can do to speed up large files in Photoshop? Should I bump up the ram usage by Photoshop above the recommened percentage?

Hm. It sounds like you know what you are talking about, and apparently I don't. I was just going to plug in a firewire cable to both and hoped that magically scratch disk would appear as an option for my tower.
Cant I somehow boot the tower as using as a hardrive only? Or applesharing or something else?

  • Can I attach my old G4 tower to my new iMac

I have an old 533MHz G4 tower (10.4.11) and I dont really want to dump it if I can find a use for it. I have an iMac 2.5GHz i5 (10.6.8) and am curious if there is a way I can link the two around the obvious tech gap issue? Any ideas? Cheers.

If you have your own Router, just connect it up to the Router.
If not, you may be able to get your modern Mac to use Internet Sharing to extend Internet access to your older Mac.

  • P67a-gd65 new HDD, 2 old... only 1 old shows up?

    Here's my computer:
    haf 932
    core-i5 2500k
    corsair tx650
    2 gtx460's SLI
    asus dvd/burner
    HDD's:
new = hitachi 1.5 TB (in white top sata)
    old 1 = Maxtor 200gb (black sata)
old 2 = western digital 250gb (black sata)
old drive 2 does not show up after installing the new drive. What I did was formatted the western digital AND the hitachi during windows 7 install. The western digital was my main drive before so I figured I would start fresh with it and remove windows.
it's been a long time since I had so many drives... I have a feeling I made a mistake by formatting the drive, and that's why it no longer shows up. What do I do now to get it to show up?

Probably have to go to Start - Control Panel - Admin. Tools - Disk Management, & activate the drive & select a letter.

  • New Macbook Pro Wireless is slower than Old G5 Tower

Less than 2 months out of the box, my 15 inch 2.4Ghz Intel Macbook Pro started acting up.
First, waking it from sleep mode seemed to take longer than normal (5 to 10 seconds?).
Then one day, the battery just went kaput. I did a hardware test and got a hit. Called Apple and they mailed me a new battery in less than 24 hours.
The battery works great. But the sleep thing still seems to take longer than it should.
But the real thing that worries me is how SLOW the wireless connection is... at home, as well as on other people's networks. At home I have an Airport Extreme (not the latest square-shaped model, but the one that looks like a flying saucer). And my G5 Tower dual 1.8 wireless loads pages faster than my Macbook Pro.
I'm no expert, but that's just wrong.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

that's a good point too, if I'm getting you. People will be putting, quite understandably, in their G5 HDs into their MPs. Tech changes and so too the well being of HDs. It would pay in the end to do a really thorough job of making sure an HD is OK and working well.
Why is it so hard or impossible for Migration Assistant to have "smart" update and know the source is PPC and Apple Partition Table.
Because, I think, they were more concerned with the new machines than the old ones and their users. It didn't slow them down enough to consider the problems new users from G5s would go through.
Bunch of funky stuff all over the place if one looks hard enough, or encounters an extended "bad" day on their Macs. Shows me the tech is still so new and evolving, it seems it will never be complete. And I still think this is only the beginning in the Computer Age. If we make it, these things are going to change the face of the planet, for the better, if we use them right.

  • Help with moving an external HDD from old MBP to brand new MBPwRetina

We just bought a brand new MacBook Pro and are trying to use the external HD  from our 4yo Macbook (data has been removed already), and we've tried some of the things in other similar threads and it's not working. The old macbook is running OSX 10.6.8. New macbook is running 10.7.4  HDD is a seagate formatted NTFS.
We can wipe the drive and completely reformat if that's necessary- there is no critical data on it. We just need to be able to write from the new macbook. Right now the permissions are read only.
We've tried the sudo chwon and chmod commands and that didn't help.
    TIA!

I think you can copy iDVD from the /Applications folder on your old Mac to your new Mac's /Application folder. If that doesn't work, you can use your SuperDrive and install iDVD from your iLife DVD.

  • Turning 30GB ATA HDD from old iBook into an external Disk?

Well i am wondering if anybody knows if i can take an iBook G4 HDD (30GB ATA 2.5") and turn it into an external USB/FireWire Disk?
I would love to get some old stuff off of it.
    Please let me know.

You can get one for less than $5 on eBay. It's USB only but that's all you would need for transfering data.

for the RAID, there is a new BIOS v.3.6

  • CLONE NEW HDD TO OLD - Please help.

    Hello APPLE WORLD
I was hoping someone would be kind enough to help me please.
I recently decided to dust off and use my old MBP that has sat in the cupboard.
I currently have and am using a 2012 MBP mid year Mountain Lion 10.8.4 with all my data, settings and software on it.
What I would like to do is install all my data, settings and software from my 2012 MBP onto my old 2007 MBP which currently has Snow Leopard on it 10.6.8?
What I want to have is literally an identical HDD (Apple ID/email/MICROSOFT OFFICE/etc etc etc) on my old 2007 as I do with my currently used 2012 MBP?
Is this possible and how would I go about doing this?
    Thank you.
