128GB Vertex 4 vs 500GB WD black as scratch disk

Which would be better as a scratch disk? The extra speed of an SSD or the extra capasity of the HDD?
I've tried to search around alot before posting this question, but i cant find good new information that directly answers this simple question.
My setup will be 128 agility 3 for OS and cache, 500GB Samsung spinpoint f3for media files and either ssd or hdd for scratch disk. I5-2500k@4,5Ghz and 16gb 1600mhz ram.

What is a scratch disk? It is used to write intermediate files, like the media cache files, the media cache database, the preview files and possibly the Windows pagefile.
SSD's have a nasty habit in that their write performance deteriorates over time untill they reach their 'stable state'. Trimming does not help here. Secondly, SSD's have a limited number of write cycles in contrast to conventional disks. Once that number of write cycles has been reached, the SSD is dead. Writing a lot of small files to an SSD shortens the life-span and makes it reach its 'stable state'performance very quickly. Not all SSD's are equal and I do not know how the Vertex4 does, but generally the performance degradation is sizable. The Agility3 is not very good in that aspect. This means that the performance gain from using an SSD for scratch disks is marginal at best. Instead of a single SSD, you may be better off with two conventional disks in raid0 for scratch. It will be equally fast, possibly even faster and last a lot longer than a SSD and may also be cheaper.
Do not be lured by the marketing hype of some SSD manufacturers about the fabulous writing speeds, sometimes claiming speeds of 400-500 MB/s. In practice and after reaching its 'stable state' is is more often in the order of 300 MB/s or even less. The Agility3 may even top off at around 200 MB/s. Your i5 CPU will have more limitations on your performance than the possible use of a SSD for scratch.

  • I'm using PSCS6 on a 500GB SSD. Do I still reach a better performance by adding a scratch disk?

    Hi,
OS X and PS are running on a 500GB SSD. Since I'm working with a MacBook Pro with 8GB RAM, I'm wondering if an external scratch disk would help to reach a better performance? The files, I'm working on, are usually between 300MB and 900MB.
    I appreciate your suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Photoshop PC version anyway seem to fill up the first scratch disk before allocating space from any other scratch disk.  So if you has sufficient free space on your scratch SSD  you don't need more scratch disk for Photoshop.   A raid 0 of ssd will stripe data across ssd devices and my improve performance.

    Yup it should !

  • IPhone 5 Black Bezel & Scratches

Can anybody who attended the iPhone 5 launch comment on the iPhone 5 black bezel.
I am thinking of ordering the black version tomorrow but I am conscious that when scratched, the bezel will show silver marks.
I don't want to use a cover and meticulously look after my phone, the the odd bump is inevitable.

I've only had my black iPhone 5 for a few days now, and I already have chips in the new, shiny, "highly-polished" chamfers (or bezels).  I dropped it onto a smooth tile floor while bending over to pick something else up.  It only dropped less than one foot and some of the shiny black chamfer chipped off.  Now I have a few silver marks on the edges.  Needless to say, I immediately put it into a case.  If I could order it again, I would get the white/silver one.  I love the color of the black phone, but I don't think that it will stand up to "normal" daily wear-  it is just too fragile. Luckily, I had screen protectors on the front and back, or else I'm sure that I would have scratches on the aluminum back.  This is my 3rd iPhone, and the first time that I have ever put a mark or scratch on one.  The previous models (3GS, 4S) were much more durable in my opinion.  I didn't even put cases on them, and I still did not scratch them.

  • Video blacked out in disk image

hi the movie looks good in idvd preview. but the burned disk video plays black, only sound and subtitles.
    the media is .avi
    what is the fix?

    Good morning, Robert.
The video format .avi can cause complications, but it's a good sign that iDVD preview can handle it.  In burning a disc, iDVD only burns a single video layer and normally cannot handle subtitles unless they are combined with the video itself.
Can you provide more details about the source video?  (in the source video can you turn the subtitles on and off?  when you use Quicktime to view the video, what are the video properties -- eg, more than one video track/video format/etc? have you previously burned a DVD from this source?)

  • [SOLVED] Black screen after disk check 3.13.8-1 upgrade

EDIT: fixed adding nomodeset to /etc/default/grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet nomodeset"
When upgrading to anything > 3.13.8 the screen works normally untill the disk check message then the screen flickers with the disk check message at the top for a few seconds then goes blank. I can then blind restart the system. Downgrading to 3.13.8-1 and problem goes away.

    Im not using fglrx
I do get some whining about UMS being unsuported in xf86-video-ati or something along those lines but I can see my screen.
Should I just downgrade to a a suitable kernal and wait for a fix? Im not sure what to do.

  • I have a fat32 formatted drive (WD my passport 500GB) that is showing in disk utility but does not mount. I am using a macbook with mac osx 10.5.8.

Disk warrior came highly recommended on other posts but because the drive is not mac os formatted it won't do its warrior magic...
The drive shows in disk utility but the options to repair are greyed out. The drive ejects sometimes but not others. The drive powers up with light and I can hear noise (not loud just a hum that confirms (i think) that it is spinning.). The drive is as it cames and booted on both a windows XP pc and my macbook with mac os x 10.5.8.
I have tried test disk but after running for a day with no other command prompts other than the first recommend I uninstalled it.
    Any other suggestions?

    Hi Christina,
It's quite possible the AC PSU has given out, if It's only Bus powered as it appears, that's the worst idea ever & asking for eventual problems.
    What Format is it?
Did you install any WD SW?
    Your best bet is DiskWarrio...

  • Iphone 5 black easily scratched

    Hi
When i bought my iphone a month ago, i noticed one scuff right out the box but i didn't make a big deal. It wasn't really noticable but now i can see at least 4 scuffs, all on the edge. It's kind of weird since it's always in my pocket or on my desk sitting on a cleaning cloth
What do you think i can do? Apple store is 2 hours away and i don't think the carrier would exchange it after 1 month

I have never used a case on my iphones and see no need to do so.
    I don't know your needs.

  • What size for OS/apps SSD and scratch disk SSD ?

    Hi !
I need a SSD for my OS with the full CS6 Cloud and few others apps (but no games, pictures, songs or other personnal stuff),
    that's mean between 70 and 80Gb. So I think I'll need only a 128Gb for that.
I also need a scratch disk, so despite I prefer a fast and large disk like the Barracuda 3Tb, I read it will be better to take a SSD.
My workstation is a 6x core, with 64Gb RAM, and 6x HDD for projects, render and footage (4K R3D and 1080p PRORES).
    My questions are :
    1) OS/apps SSD :
Even if I only need 80Gb (or a few more like 90Gb max) of storage, do I need to take more than 128Gb ?
Is it possible that the OS fill my disk with lots of temporary files ?
And the same for Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects or others apps ?
I know those apps will use the scratch disk, but maybe others temporary files will be write on this OS/apps drive ?
    2) scratch disk SSD :
Like I said, I prefer larger drives, but as I understood, SSD will be better for preview and temp files,
and actually I'm working with 4K R3D footages and 1080p PRORES.
So do you think 128Gb will be enough for a scratch disk, to use with CS6, Blackmagic Resolve, and others 3D apps, like Maya ?
Of course I can empty them regularly.............. but is it enough ? Or 256Gb, or higher will be better ?
Or just a fast WD Velociraptor 1Tb or even a cheaper Barracuda 3Tb hard drive will be good enough ?
    Thanks guys.

    Thanks for your fast reply.
But, I'm confused.... if the OS and the apps can fill my disk with lots of temp files, how a 128Gb can be enough ??
Maybe you mean that those apps will fill the SSD with "hidden" files, but not reach the limit of 128Gb ?
About Windows, I didn't knew I could make a scratch disk only for this temp files.
Do I have to put the Windows temp files in the scratch disk also ?
And you don't think a Velociraptor with 1Tb will be a good solution between the speed of a SSD and the size of a HDD ?
My drives (alone or in RAID 0) are directly connected from the motherboard P9X79 PRO, trought the X79 chipset, and the Marvell chipset.
But I read that the Marvell chipset has only 500Mb/s in total bandwitch divided between the 2 drives..... I'm not really sure....
but even if it's true, I don't think the OS/apps will take a lot of bandwitch (except when I'll start an apps),
and it will surelly let the full bandwitch for the scratch disk. Don't you think ?
4 drives are connected to the X79 chipset :
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - Barracuda 3Tb (projects)
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - Barracuda 3Tb (renders)
    - 2x SATA 3Gb/s / RAID 0 - Barracuda 3Tb (footages)
    - 2x SATA 3Gb/s / RAID 0 - Barracuda 3Tb (footages)
2 drives will be connected to the Marvell chipset :
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - SSD (OS/apps)
    - 1x SATA 6Gb/s - SSD or HDD (scratch disk for CS6 and other "video" apps)

  • 500GB 5400-rpm hard drive or 128GB flash storage?

What's the difference between the two, practically? I tend to use Photoshop a lot, so I want something that will load quickly, but I also want large storage. Also, can the 128GB be upgraded, and how much does it usually cost?

you want to use CS5/6 then you want 24GB or more of RAM
And you would want fast scratch disk arrays, fast boot drive.
That means SSD or 10K or at the least standard 7.2k drives.
Not slow noteboot or green type drives.
If you meant SSD by flash that could be boot drive or scratch but never use the boot drive itself for CS primary scratch location - always use other drives or arrays.

  • How Do I Take Advantage of 128GB Memory?

So I'm trying to test 128GB of memory in my system to see if there are appreciable advantages in having setup.
    The specs:
    Intel Xeon e5-2697 (12 cores)
    128GB of DDR3 1333mhz
    2x Titan Black
    1x Quadro K4000
    OS: ~200GB SSD
Data: WD VelociRaptor 1TB / Network @ 10gigabit / 20GB RAMDISK (Testing between them right now)
So far I've been able to find render speed improvements in After Effects easily enough (allocating more memory per core for multiprocessing/scheduling processors). The bottleneck seems to be in processing/memory there and the source/scratch/destination drives don't seem to matter. I had expected as much.
In Premiere Pro, right now I'm trying to use the 20GB RAMDISK as the scratch/source/destination drive in different combinations along with the WD VelociRaptor. The footage consists of several clips from a Blackmagic Cinema Camera, 1080p, ProRes 422 with a bitrate of up to 222mbps.
Rendering with x.264, h.264, and MPEG2 yields results that indicate the VelociRaptor and RAMDISK perform equally, despite the extreme speeds of the RAMDISK.
Am I doing something wrong? Is there a better way to use the extra memory (instead of a RAMDISK)?
(I will be trying 4k RAW and 4K ProRes soon and hopefully that might introduce different performance results.)
    Thanks.

If you purchased a Mac after Jun 6 you are entitled to a free upgrade to Lion.  You will find information about that program at Lion - Get up to date. If you did not purchase a Mac after June 6th you will need to first be on Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later and purchase Lion using the Mac App Store for $29.99.

  • HP 3800 Color LJ Prints 2 black lines. Pic Included

    Hi,
I have a HP Color LaserJet 3800. Since last summer it has been printing 2 black horizontal lines across every page. They are always in the same spot, so I'm thinking it is just something that needs to get cleaned and have ruled out the cartridges. (They have all been replaced multiple times since the issue first started). This happends with and without using the duplexer.
I took out the fuser? I think that's what it's called from under the front cover (It was really hot) and cleaned it with a moist papertowl, but that did not make any difference.
Any suggestions on what to clean or where the parts are located? I'm a noob when it comes to working on printers, so a step by step/diagram/pictures will be the best way to explain,
Here is a picture of what the pages look like, I have circled the black lines:

Scratch that, I looked at the manual and found how to open a part to fix a paper jam. There were two rollers in there that fit perfectly with the lines. I cleaned them up and now no more black lines.
Fyi, to get at the rollers I had to open the front of the printer, then on the bottom of the inside are 2 green tabs. I pressed them and lifted up the plastic piece to reveal these rollers.

  • PSE Elements 9-convert to black and white not working.

I recently bought my wife a new HP computer with Windows 7 64bit and Photoshop Elements 9 to go with it. She has not had any problems up until today.. It seems when she attempts to convert a picture into black and white, photoshop freezes up. Sometimes it will convert the image but most of the time when you go to Enhance--convert to black and white,  the little photo of what you want to conver that is on the right hand side of the screen just fills up with dots and then nothing appears on the work area.At that point you cannot close the application or anything else with out Ctrl.alt,delete. I have tried to change the programs compatibility to Windows Xp service pack 2 and 3 as well as running as admin but it does not fix this problem. As far as I know this only occurs when she tries to convert photos to black and white. What can we do? Is PSE9 not compatible with Windows 7 64?

    Suggest that you delete preferences:
Preference settings control how Photoshop Elements displays images, cursors, and transparencies, saves files, uses plug‑ins and scratch disks, and so on. If the application exhibits unexpected behavior, the preferences file may be damaged. You can restore all preferences to their defaults.
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift immediately after Photoshop Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file.
A new preferences file is created the next time you start Photoshop Elements. For information on a specific preference option, search for the preference name in Help.

  • IPod 5G; Black or White?

    Hi all,
I am in the process of upgrading from a 4G iPod to a 5G iPod. I have heard a fair amount of horror stories out there regarding how badly the black models scratch. I kept my 4G iPod in a case and took great care of it but am wondering if the black model is more sensitive. I saw the iPod Nano at a shop and it looked like someone had taken sandpaper to it. 'course this could be to the fact that everyone and their brother has manhandled it.
Anyone out there have a black model? How does it compare to showing wear in comparison to the white? I like the black model as it makes the color screen pop, but I also like to take care of my gear.
    Thanks,
    Ed

I have a black model, and it doesn't attract nearly as many scratches as the horror stories suggest.
In the three or four days it was unprotected, I kept it in the slip case that Apple gives you until my Invisible Shield arrived. During that time, I attracted a couple of barely noticeable scratches (which I polished out with iCleaner) and put the shield on.
Now I don't really bother with the slip case, and I have no scratches on the Invisible Shield. I would recommend ordering the shield a couple of days before the iPod, then literally putting the shield on as you take it out the box.

  • Won't boot to desktop (picture anomally)- monitor goes and stays black

Folks I've got a strange anomally here. I've got an aroginal G4 dual 500 running Tiger that won't provide any video por picture signal to the connected Apple 22" Cinema Display (the orginal with ADC). The machine boots and shows the grey screen with the Apple logo, then goes black and stays there, and the power light stays on on the monitor. I can still here the hard drive spinning and reading. Before making suggestions read what I've tested below:
    - put 2X AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro from my G4 into other G4s (connected to 17" LCD display) and the video card worked fine.
    - put other video cards in my G4, connected to 22" display, and all worked fine. These cards were slightly more powerful than the stock 2X AGP ATI Rage 128 Pro
    - installed a clean OS on my G4 with no changes, monitor still comes up black.
    - ran disk utilies, did the pram reset, tried the fsck rick in single user mode.
I am at my witts end.
