128MB flash drive has no files on it but says there is only 18MB free??

I plugged in my 128MB flash drive and deleted all the files off of it. When I put it in the USB port and open it, no files are there (as expected) but it tells me there is only 17.8MB of free space. Are there files I cannot see?

There might be a simpler way, particularly since this is such a small capacity drive, and you'll run out of space fairly often. This way, you can delete only the files you want to.
Next time, before you delete a file off this drive, note the space available in finder. Now delete the file. You'll probably see that the space available stays the same.
Now empty the trash, just the main trash folder, not something special on the drive. You'll probably see the space available on the external drive go up. Your old files were "deleted" from the file structure, and not showing, but they're still there until you empty the trash. At least, that's how it works on my Macs. It may be possible to set it up differently.

  • Disk erase needed after USB flash drive has been connected?

Hello. I apologize beforehand if this is a stupid question. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to return my new iMac because of a faulty screen. I have held off transferring files to see if the screen would be problem-free, but at one point I did connect a USB flash drive to my iMac. I copied just one file onto my desktop. My question is: when the flash drive is connected and files show up in the Finder window, does that mean there is now a lasting imprint of those files on my hard disk, even if I haven't actually copied them onto the desktop? I ask this because the flash drive has some sensitive data on it, and I'm debating whether or not to do a 7-pass erase before returning my iMac. Any response would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you mean the Finder window showing the contents of the flash drive, no, there's nothing retained on your Mac from that collection of files once you dismount the flash drive.

  • My 1TB flash drive has 100s of GB of mysterious "used" data

My Mid-2014 Retina MBP has the 1TB Flash drive. The other day I noticed I was almost out of space (<20GB free), which seemed a little odd. Did some cleanup, and still had less than 100GB free.
Currently I'm seeing 83.3GB free, 840.5GB used. But all actual data that I can see totals only 470GB. This is via Get Info, DaisyDisk, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory X. There do not appear to be any invisible files that account for the additional 370GB or so of "Other". The disk is encrypted with File Vault.

ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Satellite A200 - Flash drive has stopped working

I can't get my flash drive to work anymore. I had to uninstall it a while ago because people were filling up my computer with pictures and the only way that I thought that I could get them to stop was to uninstall the flash drive, well now that I want to use the drive I cant get it to work, pretty screwed up, huh.
Since then the person that was using my computer that was filling it up has bought their own computer so they won't be using mine anymore. I need to get my flash drive installed again.

    Hello
    I found it finally.
    Try please with Texas-Instruments-FlashMedia-Driver-2.0.0.7

  • Which format on a flash drive for large files for use by Mac and PC

I need to copy large files (9GB of movie file exported from iMovie of school graduation) onto 16GB flash drives so they can be used by school parents who may have Mac, PC or even TV.
My first attempt says the files are too large.
A lot of googling tells me this is a recognised problem but I am confursed by which advice to take.
I am on a 2012 iMac running OSX version 10.7.4.
Do I need to download some software to run NTFS.  It all sounds so confusing!
I ended up in this predicament because the quality of my photo slideshows I copied to my DVD-R was so bad.  Thought a flash drive would be easy. Ha, not at all.
Please answer in laymans terms - I could barely follow some of the advice I found.....

Format the flash drives with Disk Utility in ExFAT format.

  • Flash drive won't mount on iMac but mounts on all other computers

I have two new PNY 8GB flash drives and both work on a Windows 7 laptop and two different Macbook Pro computers.  One Macbook is running 10.6 and the other is running 10.7.  Two other flash drives work just fine on the iMac but these PNY sticks do not.
I have restarted the iMac with and without the sticks plugged in.
I have tried all USB ports.
I have tried Disk Utility but I do not see anything on the left.
I have look in /Volumes and I don't see the USB stick.
What am I missing?  Why won't it work on the iMac but works on the Macbooks?

My other USB memory sticks, an iPhone, and two iPods work normally plugged into the USB connectors on the iMac.  It is just this one brand of USB sticks that don't work on the iMac BUT the same sticks work on two different MacBook Pro computers and even a Windows 7 computer.

  • Old problem new angle:EXS24 instrument audio file not found -but its THERE!

So I know this has been posted on before, but I've read the forums and my problem seems slightly different.
Was trying to open tenor sax, or alto sax.
Created a new EXS24 track. In the Logic Studio Library it comes up with a long list of folders, bottom is '12 Legacy Instruments', inside that all there is is '05 Horns and Woodwinds' and '08 Drum Kits'. I go into Horns and Woodwinds, there are my instruments. When I click them it says not found.
I checked in my finder window, (application support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/ 12 Legacy Instruments/05 Horns and Woodwinds). They ARE there. So that baffles me.
Now, someone said on another forum its because they arent in the right place and SHOULD be in garage band (application support/garage band/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/12 Legacy Instruments/05 Horns and Woodwinds), so I copied them from the previously described Logic destination to there.
They STILL aren't working. It seems like Logic is looking in the right place but it says it cant find them?!
    Please help!
(P.S - Annoyingly if it comes to reinstalling Logic Studio, I don't think I can do that. I bought my Mac Mini off ebay, and have forgotten the admin password, and have no OS discs to reset it. So until I can do that, I can't install anything (as you need the admin password. Any solutions that don't involve reinstalling Logic gratefully welcomed!)

What I think you have to do is refresh the Spotlight index. Open the prefpanel Spotlight, go to the Privacy Tab, put all your disks on it (just drag 'm), close the panel, reopen it, remove the disks, close the panel, let your Mac sit for an hour or so while it is creating Spotlight indeces from scratch. Use *Activity Monitor* to check if Spotlight is done indexing. If you see MDS or MDWorker still active (=using CPU), it is not done.
O and BTW, you should create an account for yourself of which you do have the admin password, or you will not be able to solve many possible problems.

  • My 2GB Lexar usb drive says there is only 74mb available?

Just went through to delete all the stuff off my thumbdrive to put new stuff on (by dragging it all into trash) and it said there was only 74mb available, when it is a 2gig drive - how do i format or bring it back up to its full capacity (of 1.89)?
Also, I tried pulling a folder into it, then removed that folder, and the capacity went down to 51mb.

Tom is quite right -- if the Icon for the Trash (the wire basket) shows a wire basket with papers in it, your files have been Moved to the Trash, but not yet Deleted. If you open the Trash Icon, there they are!
When you choose Empty Trash from the Finder's Finder menu, the wire basket with papers should turn into a wire basket -- empty. And the space recovered from deleting the files should be corectly reflected.

  • Suddenly, one of my iPhoto Libraries will not open, or rather iPhoto opens, but says there are no photos in the file.  However, when I backed it up and looked into it otherwise, the images 86gigs are still there in the file. What to do??

Suddenly, one of my iPhone libraries will not open with 86 gigs of images: it opens and says there are no photos, yet by other looking, all the images are there and when backing up, it takes an hour.
Somehow iPhoto application will not recognize the images (over 13,000) in the file.
Any suggestions as to how to fix the matter<
    Dr. Harris, Bermuda

To move from iPhoto 08 (which is v7) to iPhoto 11 (which is v9) requires that you purchase iPhoto 11. Your software update is running just fine. V7.1.5 is last version of iPhoto 08.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
    As to the problematic library:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I have both a PC (work) and my new Macbook Air. I am having issues with opening files that I have saved on my USB Flash Drive. The files are not corrupted because it works on my PC perfectly. Could someone advise how to fix the issue?

    Please help!!!

Yes, I have the MS Office software for MAC that I bought from the Apple Store.
    This is the Error.
    Excel Cannot Open this File.
The file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
    - I created these files on my MAC, but I have worked on it on my PC. But I can't reopen it on my MAC anymore.
    Thanks All for the help.

  • I have a usb flash drive that is formatted fat 32 but it is not visible in finder or disk utility.

Can anyone help? I have ticked the relevent show boxes in finder preferences but still no luck. Disk is visible on a pc.

Has the drive been incorrectly removed (i.e. without ejecting first)?
If it's fine on the PC, reformat it there and try again.

  • External drives and dmg files mount fine, but won't show on desktop

Recently purchased a new Mac Mini 2.3 ghz i5 with OSX Lion. Everything is updated, repaired permissions from the check disk utility.
Still my firewire drive, and any DMG files from software I'm looking to install are not showing up on the desktop. They mount fine, I can write to them, see them on the Finder left siderbar, share them on my intranet at home and use Back to Mac and Screen Sharing without any problems.
Anyone have an idea why this peculiar flaw is occuring? Is it a "feature" of Lion?

Much better: I was in the same shoes once as you

  • My flash drive works on a Mac mini, but not on a MacBook Pro. How do I get it to work?

Also, when I plug my phone into the computer using the USB drive, the computer does not recognize it. I have not tried my phone on the Mac Mini. They have both worked before on my MBP. What's the problem?

It may just not be configured to SHOW.
    1. Finder>Preferences.
    2. MISSING FROM DESKTOP: Make sure under "General" for "Show these devices on the desktop" that you have a CHECK mark under "hard disks" as well as "external disks" (if you have a dash that indicates specific items are set to hide and others are not)
    3. MISSING FROM SIDEBAR: Check the same items under the "Sidebar" section if you are missing them from the Sidebar of Finder.

  • My old mac crashed and new hard drive has new Pages on it but I cannot open any documents.  Says to save on 09, I had 08 but it crashed when the computer crashed.  Now what?

Open with new Pages and it says my documents are too old, must be opened and saved in 09, but I don't have 09, just fragments of 08 from my crashed hard drive.  What do I do now?

Do you still have your installer DVD?
Reinstall iWork '08 and upgrade it to v3.03:
    http://www.freeforum101.com/iworktipsntrick/viewtopic.php?t=432&mforum=iworktips ntrick
Then open your documents and Export them to Word .doc/x to open in Pages 5.2.
You can also ask Apple to supply you with iWork '09 so you can access your work.
If that is unsuccessful, since Pages 5.2 is a severe downgrade, missing 110 features, get the iWork '09 boxed set from Amazon for $19.99.

Yep, as it says. The new virtual keypad in PR1.2 isn't a permanent fixture. I downloaded the "D-Theme SimpleWaemo" from the Extras repo last night and I've now got the pre PR1.2 on-screen keypad back. Nice theme too.
