128MB RAM MX440?

I purchased a system from Gateway a few weeks ago and it came with what they say is a GEForce4 MX440 Graphics Card with TV out and supposedly it has 128MB of RAM:
Link for the card and specs on it
On that page if you click on the "Specifications" link it says the manufacturer is MSI. So I look for this card on the web, on Gateways support site, on MSI sites, and called Gateway to about it.
There was no info on a 128MB MX440 card except that one that said Gateway was going to carry it. Of course Gateway Tech support has no clue about anything. The guy said I shouldnt mess around with drivers because updating drivers is the same thing as overclocking (lol what a moron).
So has anyone ever heard of a card like this before? The more I look into it the more I think Gateway is putting 64MB cards in boxes and calling them 128MB.

Guys
Thanks for your tips. On the primary master not being detected, my WD HDD is on IDE 0 with the CDRW and DVD on IDE 2. So, I removed the jumper switch on the HDD and eureka! primary master detected immediately and also no more beeps so the RAM problem seems to have sorted itself out too.
Talking about RAM, I am now considering changing the 512Mb unbranded stick I use to a branded one but I notice the prices vary widely and there are so many choices. Do I go for Corsair, Kingston, Samsung, Crucial, Nanya or Geil. I know just from reading these posts that a wide variety are being used successfully with the KT4V but other have compatability problems - so I am confused. I guess you guys have your own preferences?
Also, is there any real noticeable performance difference between PC3200 (400MHz) and PC 2700 (333HHz)? I play a few games like Ghost Recon where I like the graphic detail to be high, so would the PC3200 justify the extra expense?

Tried to install the developer cd using usual ./runInstaller and the GUI installer loads and asks for basic or full install.
It does not matter which option is selected as a message box pops up saying 128MB RAM is needed for Oracle Developer, click ok (only option) and it goes back to the installation screen.
This system has 512MB, which should be fine.
I cant get beyond the install screen as the message about 128MB RAM keeps popping up.
I had the same problem with Slackware 9.0 and kernel 2.4.22, so I dont think its a problem with the way the 2.6.x kernel version allows apps to read memory availability differently to 2.4.x.
If anyone could offer any opinion's that would be great, as I have not found anything associated by searching google.
    Many thanks!

I've had a look at the log files of the install and the lst few lines show that the "GetMemorySize" query returned 0, which is incorrect as this machine has 512MB.
So this does point to an issue with the software not taking into Account the changes in the 2.6.x kernel series (maybe theres a legacy support option in the kernel, I'll check).
All the java classes are compiled so I dont think I can "edit" a file to say "no the memory is enough".

  • Which version for pentium3 WinXP 128MB ram

which version of firefox can I use on old pentium3 computer WinXP 128MB ram 6Gig disk free

You should use Firefox 33.1 (the latest version). Please note that the amount of RAM you have for that computer isn't even enough to run Windows XP properly, you should have at least 256mb of RAM. Try contacting a reputable local computer shop, it should be an inexpensive upgrade.
If this is your first time running Firefox, let's do a few things to make sure your computer is up and running as good as possible:
    * Update Windows: windows.microsoft.com/windows/windows-update this helps bring the latest performance improvements, security fixes and keeps your computer running stable. Make sure you have Service pack 3 and all other updates installed.
    * Scan for malware. Windows XP is no longer support by microsoft, which makes it very vulnerable to attack. [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]] run all the programs in that article and remove any threats they find
    * Update your graphics driver: [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]] this will help keep Firefox and your computer running as fast as possible.
    * After doing all this, [[How to download and install Firefox on Windows]] and read [[Get started with Firefox - An overview of the main features]]
And remember, get more RAM ;)

  • 128Mb RAM vs. 256 in the graphics card?

I'm going to buy a Macbook when they are released; and initially was definitely going for the 1.8Ghz version. However, I can save a few hundred by going for the 1.67 and losing 512Mb RAM (cheap to upgrade) 20Gb disk-space (not important) and going from 256Mb to 128Mb video RAM on the Radeon X1600.
Does anyone have any idea of the real-world impact the drop in video RAM will have? I will mainly use the MAcbook fro Aperture and Photoshop and some gaming (plus email, web-browsing etc. which I know will see no change).
    Thanks,
    Steve

Is this a case of 'get the best graphics card' or do you think that the extra 128Mb will be used by Aperture?
If Aperture placed the whole RAW file in the memory of the graphics card; and the GPU then decodes it into a 16-bit image file, that would occupy around 52MB (for my 1D - 8Mb RAW plus 46 Mb 16-bit image).
I can appreciate the speed of the card making a difference, but I'm not so sure about the RAM, and the money saved would go towards a nice monitor.

  • 845PE Max only sees 128MB RAM

    Hi all,
Hope you can help.  I have an 845PE Max running a Northwood P4 2.8GHz and have installed 1GB (2x 512MB) DDR 2700 RAM.  Only trouble is, the motherboard's only saying I've installed 128MB of RAM.  This is the only problem I have with this board, everything else seems fine.  The memory's been tested in another board, so that's fine.  Any ideas?
    Many thanks in advance.

Right, I've tried both sticks on their own, in both slot 1 and 2, but it still shows the same value in POST.  Finally managed to get Win2k installed on the machine as a test, and it shows up 130MB-ish there too.  I'm gonna try the online BIOS tool thingy that's on the MSI website and see how that goes.  Failing that, I'll have to replace the board

  • WM advice for PIII 600MHz, 128MB Ram, IBM Thinkpad T20

I just want to see what WMs people are using for lower spec machines. So, what are you using? How well does it perform? How easy is it to configure? What's the memory footprint? Etc.
By the way, I do want it look good; Not real flashy with effects, but nice to look.

The first experiment was with Fluxbox, mainly because there is a wiki entry, and I'm very impressed by how well this system works. The second experiment was XFCE, and it seems to be a bit much for this system. I think with some more RAM it may be a viable candidate. I'm going to try E17 and Openbox today.
The only software that I need for now is a webbrowser plus MPlayer and Flash (+ Flashblock!), and Abiword. I installed all of this and it's all working surprisingly well. I'll try Opera instead of Firefox to see if I can get the performance vs. RAM usage in check.
The funny thing about this is that I may not need to get any more memory. The early tests show that this can be a very good machine for what I want it for like it is. I'm impressed.

  • Performance of AIR Windows desktop app on Intel i7 4770R & integrated Intel Iris Pro 5200 128MB

I'm developing a Full HD AIR desktop application to run on Windows, and it is likely to use the classic display list, rather than Starling. There will be quite a bit of animation on screen, mostly using GSAP Tween engine.
I usually spec a fast i5 / i7 CPU, with a decent NVidia card such as a Geforce GTX 560. My hardware supplier has advised they cannot provide my requested CPU & GPU combination, and have instead recommended an Intel Core i7 4770R (quad-core, 3.2 GHz) (Turbo up to 3.9 GHz), with integrated graphics Intel Iris Pro 5200 w/128MB eDRAM. The specification of the CPU & GPU look ok, but I wondered if anyone has any experience of using either this CPU or GPU with AIR desktop applications, and what they think to the performance? Should the low amount of 128MB RAM on the integrated graphics be a concern?

1.Make sure you understand the big differences between video and stagevideo, its tempting to think that stagevideo is the better videosoultion in any case, but its not.
The best Article (however a little outdated) on the subject is imo: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/stage_video.html
2.In a performance heavy environment the combination stageVideo+greensock might not be the optimal solution, if you have time to reprogram Starling/feathers will probably give you a much better performing combination:
    http://forum.starling-framework.org/topic/stagevideo-with-starling-example
3.I don`t know how you encode your Backgroundvideo, there are literally dozens of viable codecs that should differ extremly in how they stress the gpu/cpu. Maybe you have to experiment with a lower than HD resoultion and see if scaling up the background is a good compromise.

  • Ram = 1 chip 2 slot's who wins ????

    Okay Pbook g4 1.67ghz 15" dl-dvd tiger 10.4.5 latest updates.
Using Xbench placing a 1gb Samsung dd2 pc-4200 533 etc.etc. chip in the slot furthes from the Motherboard/logicboard I ran xbench with CPUOpenGLQuartz .
    Best performance in power options.
Ran test's 2 times to get best results.
    Results:
    Bottom Slot = 70.35 (cpu=68.12 QG=60.68 OpGL=87.05)
    Upper slot = 68.20 (cpu=63.72 QG=61.13 OpGL=83.78) Clossest to Keyboard.
Same as last config but added 512mb Samsung etc. to Bottom slot.
    Results: Bottom=1gb Upper=512mb = 68.34
    CPU=62.83 QG=61.65 OpGL=85.03
Conclusion 1gb ram for Xbench in slot furthest from the keyboard = Best config.
After every change I Pram zapped it and used the 2nd test to make sure everything is loaded and awake.
As for any other Programs ??????
    Ram used = SAMSUNG pc-4200 ddr2 533mhz
Also used onyx 3 days prior to testing.
The reason I tested it is with my defective 1.5ghz 15" 5 times in for repair I noticed that 1 slot was faster than the other just by the way OSX moved / feeled.
As for Tiger / Panther 10.3.9 was faster than 10.4.3 but I was not using a Powerbook Tiger disc but rather a universal Tiger install all with the same tweaks as used in this test.
Maybe 10.4.6 will be as fast as 10.3.9.
Hope this helps some speed freeaks out there.
Will be shipping my Pbook for the 2ghz XLR8.com upgrade soon and hopefully it will be faster when it returns.

Update UT2004 FPS / frames per second.
After the previous tests I optimally inserted the ram = 1.5gb and 1gb furthest from keyboard + 512mb closest to keyboard.
Downloaded SantaDuck to test the speed playability of UT2004 / benchmark it with new ram placing etc.
    Ran Santaduck benchmark-flyby-see more options-DOM-Suntemple.
    Results = avg. fps = 47.80 at max settings + 1440x900 ?
Then in sys prefs. selected Ati displays and added UT2004 + highest performance.
    Result = avg. fps = 58.08 at max settings + 1440x900.
In english this means that when a big NON optimized map is loaded + LAG / lots of internet traffic etc. for online playing that the min. fps will be likely be 10 fps faster than the NON ATI Displays setting.
OR I can play smoothly and still win instead of having slow jagged playing experience and lose the game.
What does this have to do with the price of egg's No clue but it will help others playing online to max. out there game play exp.
As for the optimum resolution/fps still working on that but at least the ATI 9700 128mb ram card in my Pbook can take a lot more than what I gave it credit for.
2ghz daystar/xlr8 update with in the next week or so.
I read somewhere that it gives the dual g5 2ghz a run for it's money ????

  • Best Browser and OS for G3 Indigo Clamshell w/128 Megs Ram

    Hey Everyone,
I am buying an Indigo G3 w/128 megs of ram that's running OS 9.2 and already has some version of MS Office on there. It's never been used on the net at all! All I want to do is e-mail, web surf, and maybe run iTunes. I am also scavenging an airport card from my dead G3 white laptop( Pismo?) and putting that in later, as my girlfriend has a wireless router. Basically, its just a cheap solution as I am working with her at her business and need something inexpensive to work on...that is MAC!
    So, my questions are:
    1) If I just plug it into an ethernet cable, will it update the firmware?
    2) Can I still efficiently use 9.2 with my above described needs( minus iTunes...I know that needs OSX)?
    3) What browser could I use and how do I get it if this thing has never been on the net before?
    Thanks everyone!

Probably the best browser for OS 9.x is Mozilla. Although Mozilla will have a problem on some web sites that are designed for newer browsers. Download Wamcom's Mozilla browser at: http://wamcom.org/latest-131/ With only 128MB RAM, you need to have a lot of Virtual Memory.
You only need to update the firmware if you are going to install/run OS X.
Although I have Panther installed on my G4, I run in OS 9.2.2 more than Panther.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Intel HD Graphics 3000 Shared Up 128MB

    Hi
I got e new Macbook 13" with Intel HD Graphics 3000 & Lion.
I upgraded the RAM from 4GB to 8 GB RAM.
Why my Intel HD Graphics 3000 have 128MB Ram and dont shared up?
The Problem are Virtual Box... i can only use 128MB Video RAM.
What i can do to share 128MB+?
    Regards
    Pascal

You don't, you don't have a video card in the 13", it's all Intel HD integrated graphics that scores a lousy 11 points on Cinebench. It's basically a MacBook in graphics performance, no 3D games.
If you want to run virtual machine software and another OS or two (or three or more with more RAM), you needed a 15" or better that scores 30-45 on Cinebench.

Boevieke, Welcome to the discussion area!
There is no way we can tell for sure. The best we could say is... it should work.
PC133 devices should work if those devices will operate at 66 MHz (the bus clock speed of the iBook). Not all PC133 devices will operate at 66 MHz.
In addition, the Mac and OS X are pretty strict on RAM requirements. Therefore something that might work just great on a Windows machine and might appear to meet the requirements... may not work in your iBook.
The best solution is to buy RAM from a Mac knowledgeable vendor which offers a lifetime warranty.
