12inch ibook or 12inch powerbook?

I know there are a lot of differences, but would it be better for the long run with more standard power and disk space? Is it really that much faster and will it hold all my music and photos and keep up without deteriorating?

A PowerBook would be great. But... If you have the money, I would get the MacBook Pro. Intel Macs are a lot faster, and Tiger runs completely natively on the Intel Machines. I would wait however if you have pro apps that you will be needing right now, since Rosetta (the behind the scenes software that allows you to run PowerPC native software) does not run Apple Pro Apps, such as Aperture, etc. However the Intel native pro apps will be available in May sometime. But as I said, there is nothing wrong with the Intel Macs, and they are not able to get virus's, since virus's are tied in to the operating system, and not the hardware itself.

IBook G4 or Powerbook

I'm wanting to purchase an apple laptop and I'm desperate for some advice. Should i get an ibook or a powerbook.
Any advice is welcome.

The iBook is a poweul machine for the price. It's hard to beat. If you are a casual user playing internet games, surfing, word processing, the occasional imovie, itunes, iphoto, then get an ibook. If you are a heavy user using graphics apps, Final cut express/pro (imovie's big brothers), photoshop, along with the above mentioned - get a powerbook.
Current differences -
Powerbook
-A little faster processor (hard to tell the difference)
-64mb video card - good for graphics heavy games, graphics, movies
-widescreen format (on 15" and 17")
-metal outer casing
iBook
-32mb video card
-normal screen
-plastic casing (similar to the iPod)
Other than that not much different. The difference is the user. the Power-series is mostly designed for the pro user. The i-series (iPod, iBook, iLife) are comsumer user products.

12inch powerbook HD about to die?

Recently, my 12inch PB has started to act strangely. From hitting the power switch, it makes a quiet ticking sound, four times, brief pause, then four times again etc.
It means that it takes nearly five minutes to get to the desk top fully, and then it means that while trying to use the PB, the spinning beachball kicks in, and the ticking sound continues.
Is this an indication that the hard drive is about to fail?
Excuse my ignorance, I have had Macs for a few years, but they have worked well, so I am not up on the more technical side of problem resoulution.
Hope someone can help me.

Although I suspect, this is not a Software issue, run Repair Disk anyway.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
Post the results.

12inch powerbook G4 DC-In board busted...

Hi all,
My DC-in board (port) is busted on my powerbook. there might be something stuck inside (like the tip of my power adapter) or it's just plain ol' malfunctioned...
the computer still boots fine from the battery, i just can't charge the battery or run the machine from the power adapter.
i'm fairly confident that i need to get a new DC-In board (with cable), install it, and i'll be good to go.
the only part i've found online is going for $90 - http://www.welovemacs.com/9225655.html
i'm just wondering if there are any other places out there that will sell me this board for a better price?

I noticed when the power adapter is plugged in, I get no amber or green lights.
Can you change anything by moving the plug around?
The system will not power-up at all... Recent searches discussed a problem with the DC-In-Board. I have found that they are relatively cheap,
What I've found is that the input jack comes loose from the DC in board ( solder points fail/develop cracks). I've just repaired on by resoldering that jack.
but how hard are they to replace ( I know a local Mac hardware tech), and does anyone know if the symptoms seem related to the part in question?
Replacement is not difficult. The bottom case has to come off ( need a black stick for that - I use a nylon propeller from the hobby shop ) and the bottom shield (keep track of where all those screws belong, I now tape them in place on the lower shield with 3M blue so reassembly is a no brainer). Then one screw removes the DC in board and you have to gently peel back some tape and unplug the cable from the logic board.

Pimp out my ibook, or go Powerbook?

Just got an ibook 1.42 Ghz. I'm doing some video editing so I need to either a. pimp it out with another 1 GB of RAM and a 100 GB 5400 RPM hard drive for under $500 (incl. installation), or....
b. Return it to Apple (they said they'd do it for a 100$ refurbish fee) and get a powerbook with a 100 GB 5400 RPM drive for an extra $1200 or so.
Any comments, suggestions about this? Will the ibook sing with a 5400 HD?
Or do i need to suck it up and get the powerbook?

Just a suggestion. Don't get a new internal hard drive, get a firewire drive. This will have a faster hard drive and will let OS X and imovie run off the internal and all the movie / audio files will be happy running on the external drive. Defiantly the most bang for your buck and a bigger performance boost.

Using Install DVDs for an iBook on a PowerBook

I recently purchased a 12" powerbook g4 1.5 GHz and I wanted to do a fresh install of the OS. However, the powerbook did not come with installation software. I have the installation discs from my iBook G4 (OSX - Tiger), though. Will these work for the powerbook and/or are there potential problems? Thanks in advance for your help!

The install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific with build being the key word so the short answer is no.
It is not a good idea to purchase a used Mac without the install package that shipped with the Mac when new and if the OS on the used Mac was upgraded - like from Panther to Tiger for example, the retail install package for the upgrade should also be included.
You don't have the Hardware Test CD for this Mac model and build or the install package to run Disk First Aid repair - although a Tiger retail install package can be used for this or the install package to re-install the OS and all included software that shipped with this Mac when new via an A&I or an E&I is needed or desired.
Anyway to ask for the install package that shipped with this Mac when new and if not, you should contact Apple to request a replacement install package for this Mac.

Just thought i would share my tests. Using logic express, the aim is to open as much Guitar Amp (the express one, not the pro one) and not getting the "Core Audio overload" message.
I tried on my girlfriend's ibook, on my current powerbook, an iMac at apple expo and a G5 i owned before selling it for a powerbook.
12" iBook 1.33ghz bus 133mhz 512mb ram = 13 guitar amps
15" PowerBook 1.5ghz bus 167mhz 1.5gb ram = 14 guitar amps
17" iMac G5 2 ghz bus (?) 2gb ram = 24 guitar amps
PowerMac G5 2 X 2 ghz bus (?) 2.5 gb ram = 48 guitar amps
it gives you a rough idea of the performance to expect. don't know about the new G5 though.

Interesting test results.
At least it shows how incompetitive the PowerBooks are.
(Even the new ones that came today)
Your test pb even has three times more memory than the iBook.
The difference between the iMac and the PM is also interesting.
I never thought a dual machine would be twice as fast as a single cpu.
(I think bus speeds are 600/700 and 900/1000)
But, of course this is an isolated-non real life- test. If you did a test with Space designer, Sculpture or Ultrabeat you may get a different picture.
BTW, were all four computers set to same audio buffer?
I mean if the the iBook was to buffer 1024 and the PB to buffer 128,
that could explain the non existing difference.

Which to choose - iBook G4 or Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 (15", three years old, 550MHz processor) and I have always been delighted with it - and still am.
Time to upgrade however I thought about the iBook as the only problem with the current model (apart from CPU power) is the edges of the lower half of the case are scratched to h*ll over the long hours of use, and the front area next to the magnetic catch is bald.
So other than the extra hard disc space, and a slightly better resolution screen, what extra do I get from a Powerbook ?
Is the Powerbook worth the extra money - anyone got both and care to offer advice?

By searching Apple Discussions you can find tons of threads that are similar to yours. Here is one of the most recent. I can't tell you which to buy, but I might be able to advise you. There's not much to say besides the difference "specs" from the information you have given us. But if you give us some insight on what you are going to use the computer for we and maybe some programs your interested in, that would help. If you still would like a break down of the specs I can list them off (with the dis/advantages). Heres a previous post with some of the "specs".

Ibook battery or powerbook battery?

I am still struggling(ibook or powerbook)and was wondering how the 12 inch powerbooks battery holds up in real world conditions. How many hours of dvd can you watch? Are there settings you can change or different batteries to buy?

Well personaly I would go with the PowerBook they're much faster and the 12 inch is really portable. I have a 12 inch PowerBook and when I have the screen brightness to the lowest setting before the back light goes off and the volume off along with the bluetooth I get about 5:15 min. which is fine for me when I'm on a road trip with my laptop I turn bluetooth and airpot off and turn the screen a little bit up and the volume up I get just a little bit less then 5 hours. There are settings you can set that can make it longer too. Thanks hope this has helped

Ibook 12" vs. powerbook 12"

I'm deciding which one to buy.
Purpose:
Heavy internet surfing
Heavy word processing
OCCASSIONAL Final cut pro editing.
Regardless of which one I choose, I will double the RAM from the standard 512mb to 1 Gig.
Interestingly: If I do this on the ibook it costs 100 dollars to double it, on the powerbook it costs 250 dollars for the same exact amount of increase. (makes no sense to me)
I will be doubling the hard drive on the ibook to 80 gigs (another 100 bucks)
I dont care about having a superdrive.
Seems to me the ibook makes more sense ($1200 vs. $1750)

The speed differences seem to come from little upgrades over the whole system! e.g.:
HDD - ibook's HDD runs at 4200RPM as appossed to 5400 RPM of the powerbook.
GPU - ibook's GPU is 32MB as appossed to 64MB of the powerbook.
CPU - ibook's CPU runs as stated earlier at 1.33GHz as appossed to 1.5GHz of the powerbook.
Sys Bus - ibook's system bus runs at 133MHz as appossed to 167MHz of the powerbook.
each of these would add a little more perfomance to the powerbook system. I've had an ibook, then got myself a powerbook and haven't looked back since.

could someone give me a final desion based on the information that it will primarilly be used for internet,itunes,photo editing (maybe movie editing), and the odd game or two.

I suggest you look at the hundreds of posts on this, and the iBook Discussion board to make your choice. There is not a better way than that, because the people who answer the questions kinda get tired of repeating their answer over, and over, and over again.
I have an iBook. I'm a poor college student and didn't want to pay more for a Powerbook even though I did like it more initially. I use my laptop for iTunes, E-Mail, Internet, iChat and Microsoft Office. I don't play games and don't do movie editing, and thus, the iBook was a natural decision for myself.
If you have the money and see yourself doing a lot of movie editing and playing a lot of games, the extra speed of the Powerbook may be worth it to you. Again, it wasn't to me, but it varies from person to person.
If you have the money and are willing to splash it, I would go with the Powerbook, with the faster processor, et. al. If you want just an entry level Mac that still performs very well, get an iBook. You're not getting an inferior laptop if you get an iBook; just one that's not as powerful.

IBook screen versus Powerbook

I own a powerbook 1ghz 12" and I'm looking to replace the screen. Do the powerbook and iBook share a screen? Can I pick one up off of one of those?

I've been looking around for a good price and I'm not completely impressed with what I have found. Especially when you can find a 95% complete powerbook for oh twice the price as just the lcd screen The installation wont be a problem since I've completely taken apart the computer.

IBook HDD on Powerbook?

Will a iBook 13" HDD fit in a Powerbook G4 12"?
My girlfriends Powerbook crashed, and her iBook's powersupply broke. So I was thinkin about switching HDD's, but will a iBook HDD fit in a Powerbook?

In view of the fact that a new power adapter for the iBook wouldn't cost much and the Powerbook's hard drive may still be OK, it seems premature to think of incapacitating the iBook to get the Powerbook running again.
Have you actually established that the Powerbook's hard drive has failed or is failing? How?

Replacing old iBook - Intel? Powerbook?

Thanks to Ronda who tried to help when I posted a question a few days ago.
I took the iBook to the computing service. Turns out my hard drive is pretty much on the way out (though it still functions fine for up to a day at a time). A new HD is only £500 less than a new computer. Also, the casing is damaged, which I'm told may cause the computer to break down at any point in the future. So I've decided to keep this one for the time being and just use it for internet and DVDs, until it gives up on me completely. Then I'm going to get a new one.
I've heard rumours that Apple is going to bring out Intel portables later this year. Does anyone know if this is true? Also, does anyone know if Powerbooks are more physically durable than iBooks? I do a lot of travelling (including field research in remote locations) so I'd like to get a model that is as robust as possible.
I hope this is the right section to ask this question!

Having had two 12" Powerbooks and now a 15" MacBook Pro and having used my girlfriends 12" iBook several times, I can say that the iBooks are built to take more of a beating. However, the plastic on the iBook seems to show sratches, where as the Powerbook/MacBook Pro is fairly scratch resistant. I pulled one of my 12" Powerbooks off my desk once (thank goodness for the new magsafe plug) and the thing got pretty dented up & I had to replace the hard drive. I would guess that the iBook would have handled the fall a bit better (or it possibly would have cracked instead of denting). The new iBook (due by the end of the year, hopefully sooner) may be thinner (they made the MacBook Pro thinner) which may or may not effect its durability. There are plenty of places to go to talk about upcoming Apple product releases, but for now, the current iBook is built to last.
