12inch powerbook G4 DC-In board busted...

Hi all,
My DC-in board (port) is busted on my powerbook. there might be something stuck inside (like the tip of my power adapter) or it's just plain ol' malfunctioned...
the computer still boots fine from the battery, i just can't charge the battery or run the machine from the power adapter.
i'm fairly confident that i need to get a new DC-In board (with cable), install it, and i'll be good to go.
the only part i've found online is going for $90 - http://www.welovemacs.com/9225655.html
i'm just wondering if there are any other places out there that will sell me this board for a better price?
thanks!

Hi Tolva and Welcome to Apple Discussions,
I noticed when the power adapter is plugged in, I get no amber or green lights.
Can you change anything by moving the plug around?
The system will not power-up at all... Recent searches discussed a problem with the DC-In-Board. I have found that they are relatively cheap,
What I've found is that the input jack comes loose from the DC in board ( solder points fail/develop cracks). I've just repaired on by resoldering that jack.
but how hard are they to replace ( I know a local Mac hardware tech), and does anyone know if the symptoms seem related to the part in question?
Replacement is not difficult. The bottom case has to come off ( need a black stick for that - I use a nylon propeller from the hobby shop ) and the bottom shield (keep track of where all those screws belong, I now tape them in place on the lower shield with 3M blue so reassembly is a no brainer). Then one screw removes the DC in board and you have to gently peel back some tape and unplug the cable from the logic board.

  • PowerBook 15" - Hard drive gone bust. HELP!!!

    Hey guys,
    I've got a MacBook Pro and a PowerBook 15" Al 1.67ghz.
The hard drive in my PB has just gone bust, and I don't have the restore disks for OS X 10.5.
Seeing as my MacBook Pro has 10.5, would it be possible to move (via CCC or the like) the OS X from my MacBook Pro onto the new hard drive I've just replaced in my PowerBook? If so, how would I do this? Is it possible to boot from an external hard drive on a PowerBook?
By the way, just so you know, I have paid for both Mac OS X licenses.
    Thanks for your help!
    Andy

Hi, Andy. No, the OS from the Intel MBP won't run at all on the PowerPC Powerbook. And yes, you can boot the Powerbook from a FireWire (not USB) external drive, provided it contains a suitable PowerPC-native OS version.
You'll need a retail Leopard installer disc set to put Leopard on the Powerbook's new drive. There is no way you can use the MBP's installer discs or its installed OS, directly or indirectly, for that purpose.
You can, however, use the Install/Restore disc(s) that originally came with the Powerbook to install Panther or Tiger (whichever was originally installed on it at the factory). Model-specific discs that came with any other Mac model are very unlikely to work on it.

  • 12inch ibook or 12inch powerbook?

I know there are a lot of differences, but would it be better for the long run with more standard power and disk space? Is it really that much faster and will it hold all my music and photos and keep up without deteriorating?
    Thanks!
    -Tech Geek's Mom

A PowerBook would be great. But... If you have the money, I would get the MacBook Pro. Intel Macs are a lot faster, and Tiger runs completely natively on the Intel Machines. I would wait however if you have pro apps that you will be needing right now, since Rosetta (the behind the scenes software that allows you to run PowerPC native software) does not run Apple Pro Apps, such as Aperture, etc. However the Intel native pro apps will be available in May sometime. But as I said, there is nothing wrong with the Intel Macs, and they are not able to get virus's, since virus's are tied in to the operating system, and not the hardware itself.
    If you want more info:
    www.apple.com/intel/
    www.apple.com/rosetta/
    www.apple.com/universal/
The Intel Macs will be better in the long run, since more and more universal apps are coming out daily.
    Hope this helps,
    Cory

  • Titanium PowerBook G4 (DVI) Logic Board Removal

I am in the process of taking apart my Titanium PB G4 (DVI) in order to remove the broken LCD display. I followed the instructions on ifixit.com:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/33.15.0.html
But I came across a snag with a part unaccounted for in the instructions. The bottom PCMCIA card cage (the one for AirPort card and the one that is attached to the logic board) is actually attached by a metal bracket to the top PCMCIA card cage. So, I am unable to remove the logic board and am stuck at the last part of this step:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/33.15.12.html
I do not see any clear ways of detaching the two PC card cages. If anyone has tips on how to proceed, I would really appreciate it.

Hi, Moonhawk. In your shoes, I would telephone iFixit for help. If their instructions are incomplete or unclear, I'm sure they will be glad to explain whatever you need explained, and they may be glad to know how their guide could be improved. I haven't personally performed the disassembly you're attempting on a DVI Tibook, and with my own Tibook still under its extended AppleCare until next January, I'm not inclined to take it apart to see what you're talking about. Good luck!

  • 12inch powerbook HD about to die?

Recently, my 12inch PB has started to act strangely. From hitting the power switch, it makes a quiet ticking sound, four times, brief pause, then four times again etc.
It means that it takes nearly five minutes to get to the desk top fully, and then it means that while trying to use the PB, the spinning beachball kicks in, and the ticking sound continues.
Is this an indication that the hard drive is about to fail?
Excuse my ignorance, I have had Macs for a few years, but they have worked well, so I am not up on the more technical side of problem resoulution.
    Hope someone can help me.

"...did not need to repair disc,..."
Although I suspect, this is not a Software issue, run Repair Disk anyway.
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.
    Post the results.

  • Powerbook won't sleep, just shuts down

I asked about this some time ago and nobody ever had any ideas. I was just curious if someone new had ideas.
My 12inch powerbook g4 won't sleep, if I tell it to sleep, or close the lid it just shuts down. I have changed the settings so that sleeping isn't an option and the screen saver comes on and then the screen goes to power save. The computer can stay like this for days/weeks but if the lid closes it shuts off. Any ideas? All the checks I have run haven't found any issues. I replaced the logic board about a year ago and the problem remained. So, it was either not associated with the logic board or both boards have the same issue. Not sure what else would cause this sort of issue.
    I am now running 10.5.4.

sorry - should have added that I already reset PRAM, PMU, repaired permissions, ran cron scripts

  • Powerbook 12" 1.33 batteries are the available?

Need to replace the battery on a 12"powerbook 1.33 logic board.running 10.6 -as close to apple original.
    John

Apple no longer sells them and neitehr does one of the best after-market vendors, OWC.
    I found this:
    http://www.global-batteries.com/product_info.php/cPath/1_12/products_id/10566
on a site from which I purchased two G3 Wallstreet batteries for a friend. Both worked as well as the original Apple batteries. However, that firm sources from different manufacturers so there is no way of knowing if their offering for the PB12 is as good as their G3 Wallstreet batteries without doing the "buy-and try" thing.

  • Ti Powerbook parts to sell

I spilled water and on and damaged my titanium powerbook G4 and recently upgraded to a new macbook pro. In the meantime I took my old powerbook in to a local certified apple retailer and repair shop and had them test each salvagable part and package each piece individually. What I'm wondering is does anyone have a suggestion as to where I can go online to find people who need used powerbook parts? Message boards? Online resellers? If anyone has ANY suggestions I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you!
    Macbook Pro 1.1   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Agrace,
eBay is an excellent place to sell spare parts. If you properly mark your auctions as parts salvaged from a broken laptop there will be many people looking to pick up these items to service their own laptops. It is also quite common that broken and non-working laptops are sold simply for the spare parts that can be salvaged.
While they won't fetch as much as a working unit, a TFT screen for example can still get you a nice price.
    Good luck!

  • Faster logic board/processor in my 'book?

I have 667Mhz Titanium (DVI) Powerbook G4. Is it ok to install a logic board with a 1 GHz processor? Will I see a substantial speed increase? Is there any other way to increase the speed on my Powerbook?
    Thanks,
    Lee.

Hi again, bamarags. I haven't shopped logic board prices in a couple of years and don't know what the going prices are now. If you're willing to buy a used board without any warranty, it will be cheap compared to anything offered with even a short warranty by a reputable vendor. The 1GHz board, being the fastest, is the most in demand and the most expensive.
Personally, I wouldn't spend more than $75 for any logic board without a warranty that I had good reason to expect would be honored. (A warranty from someone you can't find when you need to is no warranty at all, of course.) $75 is the largest amount I can afford to gamble once or twice a year — your threshold may be different.
For boards with warranties from reputable vendors, check these sites:
    http://www.pbparts.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.dttservice.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.powerbookresq.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.powerbookmedic.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.tekserve.com (parts and repair work)
    http://www.welovemacs.com (parts and used equipment)
http://www.ifixit.com (parts and excellent, illustrated online take-apart instructions)
They won't be the cheapest sources. For those, see Ebay, and be very careful what you bid on there.
Bear in mind that there was also a 1GHz Aluminum Powerbook, and that logic board would be of no use at all to you.

  • PowerBook in Target Disk Mode - cloned MacMini - created much confusion!

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to undo the mess I've made :-((
I've been using SuperDuper to clone the hard drive of my MacMini to my 12inch Powerbook so that the Powerbook is an exact copy of everything on my MacMini - BIG MISTAKE (I now realise). I wanted to check some details of the PB's bluetooth capability today and discovered that everything shown in 'About this Mac' actually refers to the MacMini and not to the PB.
Can anyone please tell me how I can get back my PB information?
I should add that I do have a separate hard drive in a firewire enclosure that I also use to backup my MacMini hard drive - I just thought I would be very 'belt and braces' by having a clone on my PB, but instead I seem to have created a big mess for my PB.
    Cheers
    Tricia

    > I must admit to not understanding what 'cloning to a disk image is.
That basically means backing up to a 'virtual' software-based disk, rather than an actual physical disk.
Your only real option with the PowerBook is to erase and install. There is no need to download the 10.4.7 combo update separately as you can do that from the PowerBook once it has been installed with Tiger.
As for Entourage and the MS Office applications. You need to install the applications on to your PB first. Afterwards, with regard to Entourage emails (and I am not the best person to answer this as I do not use Entourage), I think there is an import function/wizard that allows you to locate the 'old' data and import it into the new installation. The remaining PowerPoint, Excel and Word data files can simply be copied over.
For both the data transfer tasks you may want to have your Mac mini connected via (ironically) FireWire Target Disk Mode so that the PB can access the mini's drive.

  • Powerbook G4 500 won't boot from battery only

    Hi,
I have a Powerbook G4 500 Ti (running OS 10.4.8 that will not boot from just the battery without the powercord attached. I have tried several different batteries and the same results.
Sometimes under "About this Mac" the battery show's it's there but most of the time it doesn't show a battery and an X appears on the desktop.
What I've done - replaced the battery with a fully charged one from a working PB, reset the PMU, Reset the Pram, Cleaned the contacts on all batteries and in the battery bay, Reseated the Airport card, Down loaded the latest Apple updates today and loaded them. The computer runs great with just the powerchord and sometimes the battery icon shows a picture of a plug, but then it reverts to the X.
Another problem, I have a working Airport card installed from another machine and it doesn't show up in the About this Mac window I get Airport Card: No INFORMATION FOUND that it is installed. Could this be related and also can a dead PRAM battery cause this? Any help would really be appreciated I've tried everything. Thanks for your response in advance.

Hi, Opie. A dead PRAM battery will generally prevent a Tibook from starting at all, with or without the AC adapter or a main battery in place. Therefore, I doubt that that's your problem.
Your Airport card cage and your battery are both connected (separately) to the Powerbook's main logic board. it is possible for those connections to work loose over time, or to be hindered by oxidation on the contact surfaces. You can try disconnecting and then reconnecting each of them several times to wear away oxidation and make sure the connectors are properly seated.
This page is the starting point for a complete, well-illustrated set of take-apart instructions for the 500MHz Tibook. The bottom illustration on the page that shows how to remove the keyboard shows the battery connector: a large white plug with several multicolored wires attached, directly beneath the keyboard's left-hand Command (Apple) key. The last illustration in the instructions for removing the Airport card shows the card's connector: a rectangular tan or orange tab at the right-hand end of the flex cable that is connected to the Airport card socket. While you have the bottom cover of your Tibook off, check to make sure the card is firmly seated in its socket and that the flex cable is solidly connected to the logic board.
Another possible reason for the battery's not being detected sometimes: Some 400MHz and 500MHz Tibooks had an ill-fitting battery: it slopped around in the battery compartment and could lose contact. Apple offered for some time to install free of charge a small shim that took up the slack inside the battery compartment and kept the battery pressed against its contacts. If that correction was never made in your Tibook, or if the shim has fallen out or shifted from its proper position, your Tibook may be suffering from the original problem now. Check to see that there is no movement of the battery once you snap it into position in the battery compartment. If there is any, post back for guidance on making and installing a shim. (Apple long since discontinued the repair program, and it's a simple thing to make yourself.)

  • Mini Dvi to VGA for Projector issue

I recently bought a mini DVI to VGA adapter for my new macbook Black 2.4 ghz. When I hook this up to the projector nothing comes through, but the computer recognizes the projector. I know it is not the projector because when I plug in my 12inch powerbook it instantly recognizes the computer and displays whatever is on the screen. I even returned the adapter for a new one and am still having the problem. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Are there steps that I'm not doing, or is there something wrong with the mini dvi on my macbook?

When I attach my MacBook to a projector via mini DVI, all variations of order of activation used, the desktop image appears, but the icons and other open pages are off the screen to the right.
Of greater importance, Keynote presentations appear as two slides side by side, with a timer under the left image and no transitions.
This has happened with two portable projectors and one overhead, exactly the same images with each.

  • Video out doesn't work anymore

The video out doesn't work properly any more on my G4 12inch powerbook. It had been working fine, but now it doesn't work properly with either of the mini-vga adapters that came with my powerbook. When using the mini-vga to composite/s-video, the image appears on the tv but there is no colour and the picture isn't stable at any resolution over 800 x 600.
When connecting to a monitor or projector using the mini-vga to VGA adapter, the image appears on the screen etc but the colour is completely wrong (everything is shades of green).
I can't think of anything that might be the problem, though I did upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 and I'm wondering is this might be the problem??
    Thanks.

  • Belkin wireless modem and Airport Express lan problems

Let me preface my problem by stating the obvious - I'm not very technically proficient!
That said, I've had an AirPort Express wireless lan connecting three computers on my home/office network for the past 8 months without any problems at all. All machines on the network have been able to access the internet via a Thomson SpeedTouch 530 ADSL1 modem that connects via an ethernet cable to the AirPort Express. No problems.
The network consists of my G5 iMac (ALS), my husband's Mac mini and my Sony VAIO laptop (XP Pro SP2).
I should also mention that half-way between my office and my husband's office there is a second AirPort Express that 'boosts' the signal to his office.
I recently changed ISPs to a provider that offers the faster ADSL2+ service. This meant that I had to get a new Belkin ADSL2+ modem. This is my problem. I cannot connect my AirPort Express network to the internet using the Belkin modem. The Belkin modem connects without any problem if I just have it connected via ethernet to my iMac but that's not what I want to do.
My existing AirPort details are -
    IPv4 Address: 10.0.1.3
Router 10.0.1.1 (this is the SpeedTouch 530 modem)
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
I thought I could change the new modem's address(?terminology?) from 10.1.1.1 (which is how it came) to 10.0.1.3 and that everything would work but it doesn't.
Belkin tech support said 'the problem is with your AirPort Express' (what else would they say)?
Do I have to keep the 10.1.1.1 and change my AirPort addresses? Or should I try to set up a new network?
