"13'' inch pro or 13' air ?

Help! I only have one day to decide to exchange my 13' pro for a 13' air  or just keep my pro.  I have done a lot of research, but still have not decided!! Here are my concerns....The new Pro is coming out in a few months which might be less in weight or would it most likely be priced higher?  I am a light weight person and this pro is pretty heavy for a 13', but I do love this smooth running machine! , but on the other hand I would enjoy taking the air out and about with me and when I travel.  My other concern is that the resolution on the Air seems much brighter and different than the pro, but does that make the fronts appear smaller and would the resolution cause more eye strain for slight aging eyes?  also My iphone causes great eye strain!  Also I'm just starting a SMALL photography business and wondering how the air would do with editing ?  Also since I take very good care of my devices.. I was wishing to do without the Apple care plan with the pro or with the Air. .  I keep thinking that the lifespan would be longer with the pro, but I like the fact that the air is light and fast. Hope someone can answer my question about the resolution being different or harder on the eyes. I have looked at both screens at Best buy and the written text on the air with the bright light always looks smaller than on the pro??.

You seem to be in my boat with aging eyes and Iv'e got some bad news for you.
The 13" is NOT a good choice, first because you mention the iPhone eyestrain which could be due to two things, small type and the reflections of the glossy screen.
I suggest you do what I did, get a 17" MacBook Pro with the anti-glare screen. This large screen will allow you to scale the type size larger without spilling as much content off the edges like a smaller screen does forcing you to scroll around a lot.
You can download Firefox and the add-ons NoSquint and Theme Font & Size Changer to change the size of type as you surf the web, other programs allow font scaling so it's easier to read.
You can see what I did here to customize Firefox as Safari is HORRIBLE web browser for the hard of seeing.
You'll also likely need reading glasses, or perhaps even having to update your subscription eyeglasses.
I don't see any "lightweight" solution for your problem, other than perhaps a 15" MacBook Pro anti-glare and a large third party monitor with anti-glare screen. (matte finish) like what graphic artists use.
Since your into photography, your going to wind up getting these type of anti-glare screens anyway.

Not a good decision, it's NOT a matter of how welll you take care of your machines, Apple doesn't cover user damage, rather it's extending the factory warranty to 3 years, when you only get a year standard.
If your logicboard needs to be replaced out of warranty, that's upwards of $700, and Apple has soldered nearly everything to the logicboard.

  • 13 inch Air screen vs. 13 inch Pro screen

Hello. I'm looking at getting either the 13 inch new Air or the 13 inch Pro.
I'm wondering what the practical or observed difference between the screens is given that the air's resolution is better.
Has anyone observed the difference or have any opinion?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi n,
The MBA display is going to be able to show more on the display because it's higher resolution. This also means things will be smaller (think text), but also sharper (that's what higher resolution is).

  • Mac pro or mac air?

Helllo, I'm a highschool student with a macbook air and im required to bring my computer to school every day, my school is technology based, but im looking at a macbook pro 13 inch and a macbook air 13 inch for my school. i over use my computer for all the hard work. We use our text books, notes, project, etc. on our computers. In my free time i also listen to a lot of music and play a lot of games and watch a lot of movies on my computer. Im wondering which one would be best for me. I like the macbook pro because the sapce and the ram and it can handle a lot of work at once it has a longer battery life and agian how much it supports., but i like the macbook air because of the ssd card and the light wieght and the flashdrive on it. Which one should i get?

A lot depends on what you expect the addition to do...provide limited computing but great portaility, then the iPad because it has the iWork components available to it.  But limited ability to only those apps available from the app store.  For computing capability and portability, the MBA is great, small, light weight, fast, will run MS Office, and is an honest to goodness computer.  Lots of power, then the MBP is best...all things compatible with Lion, memory and harderive upgrades, two graphics processors, all around power house.
    Some thoughts.

  • Macbook pro vs. macbook air for engineering

I am starting my undergraduate degree in chemical engineering and I wanted to know if it matters if I get the Pro or the Air. I am pretty sure the school gives us lap tops to take home and do our homewrok, so I guess I wont be downloading too much software on it!

    Macbook Pro 13-inch.
Wait until the school starts. You may be able to buy from school store.

  • MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air for online college?

I'm starting grad school in another month or so (MA in Education and a k-8 teaching credential). The entire program will be ONLINE with WGU (Western Governors University). I'd love to buy and use just a MacBook Air, but I wonder whether it will be sufficient for an online program? My other option is a MacBook Pro.
    Any thoughts?

    define sufficient
If you plan on much/ larger video editing then get the Pro.
I own both, and love both,... prefer the Air a bit more for portability, however that is purely subjective.
The NEW macbook Pro and Air are extremely close in form factor
The newest macbook Pro is essentially a larger macbook Air with Retina display and options for speed in increasing prices up to an independent graphics and quad core processor.
both Air and new Pro now have PCIe SSD and permanent RAM.
The Air is the lightweight portable form factor, fast to boot and shut down, but with longer battery life than any of the macbook pro in 13"
Now the new macbook Pro and macbook Air are extremely close in form factor and nature.
    both have 802ac wifi
both have permanent RAM, no superdrive
both are slim profiles and SSD
The only real differences now are (in the most expensive Pros) faster processors and quadcore processors and top end model autonomous graphics, also HDMI output on the new macbook Pros!. ....and of course the retina display
both are now "very good for travel"
DETAILED bench tests between the new AIR and the new PRO here:
    http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/11/how-to-choose-13-inch-macbook-air-vs-13-i nch-retina-macbook-pro/2/
Other than features the form factor of the Air and Pro are VERY close now,....so now its merely a matter of features and price more than anything.
You need an external HD regardless of what you get for backups etc.   Drop into an Apple store and handle both and make your choice based on features, such as Retina or non-retina, .... both at a distance now look like the same computer.
The Pro weighs more, ....but nowhere near what it used to just a month ago on the older macbook Pros
The NEW macbook Pro is a different creature entirely than the older macbook Pro, .....the new Pro is thicker than the Air, but id frankly call the NEWEST Pro a "macbook Air with Retina display" , or
Maybe a “macbook Air PRO with Retina display”
Instead of Air vs. Pro now,.....its really a smooth transition from Air to pro without comparing say, 2 different creatures, now its like contrasting a horse from a race horse (rough analogy)
Either one in 8gig of RAM (preferably)... the 4gig upgrade costs very little,  the I7 you will notice only 15% faster on heavy applications over the I5, and NOTHING on most APPS.....I5 has longer battery life.
As you see below, the non-Retina 13" AIR is 82% of the Macbook with Retina display in resolution
there is no magical number of pixels per inch that automatically equates to Retina quality.
    http://www.cultofmac.com/168509/why-you-might-be-disappointed-by-the-resolution- of-those-new-retina-display-macs-feature/
A huge internal SSD isnt a game changer for anything, you need an external HD anyway
what you WONT READ on Apple.com etc. is that the larger SSD  are much faster due to SSD density

  • IPad mini vs iPad and MacBook Pro vs MacBook Air

I want to buy an iPad. I am trying to decide which is best to purchase to satisfy my expectations and what I would use the product for- the current 4th gen iPad or the new iPad mini. I do like the fact that the iPad mini fits so nicely in your hands but I also really like the fact that the 4th gen iPad has such an a advanced A6X chip giving it awesome graphics and its big beautiful 9.7 inch screen.
I like to take photos and play games and search the Internet. I bring my current iPod touch 4th gen many places with me. I like to FaceTime and email and text my friends with iMessage. I also like to watch movies and tv shows and listen to music and watch music video. However I do not like to read books.
What can't you do with and iPad mini that you can't do with an iPad and what is the difference (besides the sizes). What would you do with an iPad mini you wouldn't do with an iPad or what would you do with an iPad you wouldn't do with an iPad mini?
          ALSO
What is the difference between the MacBook Pro and the MacBook Air and what are they best used for and which would best satisfy my hobbies while using apple products (listed above). Which is best to get MacBook Pro of MacBook Air and what would you do with one and not the other.

  • Pro vs. Air opinion

    Hello,
After six years with my Pro, I'm thinking about buying a new MacBook. However, because I've been out of the loop on the current Pro and Air models, I was wondering if I could get some opinions (such as Pro vs. Air, memory, graphics, speed, processor, specs, etc.) on my next possible purchase.
Current model - 15 inch MacBook Pro (Early 2008 and Late 2008), 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    - MacBook Pro (Early 2008 and Late 2008) - Technical Specifications
    - http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .4-15-early-2008-penryn-specs.html
I kept my Pro in good shape and it was nothing but great to me, and I would like to have a new model with a performance and set of specs similar to it, but since I need to keep a budget in mind, I would like to know if I can get by with an Air. Even with six years of heavy graphic design work (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), video streaming, web surfing, and multitasking, I've only managed to use up 50% of my hard drive, which is why I'm thinking about going with an Air. However, speed, memory, and performance are still important.
What do you think? Any feedback will be appreciated. Thanks.

That is a fair point, but I'm not factoring external software (i.e., Creative Suite) into my current budget. However, as far as I know, aside from a few minor updates, earlier versions of Creative Suite should work fine under Mavericks. Please let me know if I'm wrong though.
If I eventually need to buy Creative Cloud, I plan to purchase it with a separate "budget." In other words, at this moment, my money will only go toward a new Macbook Pro or Air (and any tech upgrades, if necessary).
    Thanks.

  • MacBook Pro or MacBook Air for day to day task(I have a ps4 for gaming)

I am confused with the MacBook Pro and Air.
Theres is a major differences in their prices in India and if the price difference is worth it or not.
I will use them for day to day task, web browsing and stuff because I already am a hardcore gamer.
If any of you suggest the MacBook Pro then also suggest 13 inch or 15inch cuz I thin so 13 inch is more worth the price and even if you guys say that 15inch is good for gaming I guess it is no good for me because I already have a ps4
Would be awesome if you guys help me figure out the solution.(Apple Community R0cKs!!!!!)

    Debkumar56,
other than Web browsing, what are your day-to-day tasks and stuff that you would do on whichever Mac you decide upon? For Web browsing, either of them would be fine.
What exactly do you find confusing  between the Pro and the Air?

  • Macbook Pro or Macbok Air?

I bought the MBP 2012 13" w/8gb of memory two weeks ago but am now wondering if I made the right choice. The MBP runs great and I am really happy that I switched over from PC, but I can't help but feel that the regular Macbook Pro is being replaced by the Macbook Pro with Retina Display therefore threatning to make my new laptop obsolete in a year or two. I'm wondering if the best move would be to buy the Air now and upgrade to the Pro whenever I actually need it and when Retina Display is a little more affordable.
That worry aside, I need my laptop for college so I need something powerful but maybe not as powerful as the computer I have since I don't think I am going to be taking any classes in video editing or anything like that. I will be using my laptop mainly for online classes, normal college stuff, light internet browsing, probably some light gaming, and basic photo enhancing. I really like the ultra-portability of the Air but I don't want to sacrifice anything I may need performance wise. To sum it all down, I am confused.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why you feel that you purchased the wrong Macbook....
Both Macbook Pro and Macbook Air are quite good with the MB Air having a much better screen resolution than the Macbook Pro 13 Inch.
You can return it if you're under the 14 day return/exchange policy for a Macbook Air if you wish to do so.  Do remember however, that the Macbook Air does not come with a built in optical drive and RAM is not upgradeable in the future should you decide you will need more RAM.
If you like portability - I say go for it....Other than that, your Macbook Pro 13 inch will do the same job as the Macbook Air with no issues.
    Good luck

  • What are the uses for Macbook pro and Macbook air?

Hi! I am deciding between MBA and MBP and need to know what the different uses for each one was. Like what would you use the MBA for and what would you use the MBP for?? All opinions welcome!!

They're actually pretty comparible in what they can do if you're talking about the base model of both (say 13") with 4GB RAM. At that level, the Pro has the advantage if you're going to watch or burn DVD's or CD's, as the Air has no optical drive. But otherwise, they're pretty much the same--full-sized, backlit keyboard, camera, beautiful screen, etc. If you're going for more than a basic 13" Pro, then things start to change. For example, you can get up to 8GB RAM on the Pro, and a huge hard drive, you can also get a 15" or 17" size. You will be paying a lot for these, but, obviously, if you're going to be working on, say, making videos (which you may then want burn onto disk) the Pro is very much what you'll want.
However, if you don't need or want any of that--if, for example, you plan to do the usual programs (word processing, games, web surfing, music, etc.), then you really won't see much difference between the two. At 4GB RAM and a 13" screen, the big difference is going to be thickness and weight, not power. And in this the Air will have the advantage--it's really amazingly slim, light and with a SSD, faster (you pay extra--a lot extra--to get SSD on the Pro).
Just to make the point, I switched from a 13" Pro to an 11" Air. My hard drive size is half what it was with a Pro, but I was barely taking up half of that amount on the Pro, and so have plenty of room on my 128GB Air (you can get 256GB for the 11" if you order it online). Absolutely everything my Pro did, my Air does (sans optical drive), only faster and lighter and more compact--meaning it takes up less table space, slips in and out of my bag faster, balances on my lap easier, etc. But there was no interruption of service--I switched pretyt seamlessly from 13" Pro to 11" Air.
The Pro offers you more options for power, screen size, HD size and optical drive. But it's really pretty surprising how few of us need that much power, that much room, or the optical drive. It's very freeing to realize that less can be more than enough.

But the newest Mac notebooks do not have a firewire port.
So he may need a TB to FW adapter, $29, a FW 400 or 800 cable, $??, and then a FW 400 to 800 cable/port adapter (If the old Mac only has a FW 400 port), $??.

  • How can I transfer Microsoft office from my old macbook pro to macbook air

how can I transfer microsoft office from macbook pro to macbook air?

Assuming you have the 2011 version the easiest way is go to Microsoft's Web site and download Mac Office 2011 onto your MacBook Air and then run it. If you have the 2008 (or the 2011) version on disc you can turn on DVD sharing in the Sharing control panel of your MBP and install it by remotely sharing your MBP's DVD.
Since Microsoft uses activation when you start Office on the new computer if you use the same activation code as you used on the MBP you'll probably get a message to call Microsoft. Do so and just explain that you got a new computer.

  • Should i go for macbook pro 13" or air 13"

hey guys, now that i've been new macbook pro has come out light, thinner and with extra 4GB RAM, i just do not know if i should get macbook air or pro.
I am a college student where power ports are readily available in my campus. so battery life of 7~8 hours and up are totally fine.
    Pros for macbook pro are:
    BEAUTIFUL screen
better CPU & GPU (even though there may only be slight difference)
    Good palm rest
    Pros for macbook air are:
    LIGHT AND THIN
    EXTREMELY GOOD battery life
I have seen many reviews where they said difference in size and weight is  negligible for a person with healthy body (lol) but also CPU and GPU difference are also negligible since it doesn't differ very much in terms of performance.
I do not know if those are true, but regardless, i wanted to get some advices from people who owns pro, air or even both.
    Thanks in advance guys !
ps. i heard apple might come up with RETINA displace macbook air in late 2014 or early 2015. is it trust able?

Yes, you should be able to dual boot Windows 7 and above using a built-in utility called 'Bootcamp'. I personally has boot camped Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Installing Windows only took about 10 minutes (lightning fast) and all the drivers installed correctly. Windows has never looked better =D
However, I will report one issue. In OS X Mavericks, you can use multi-touch gestures to interact with the system, for example two-finger scrolling, or pinch-to-zoom. In Windows, these multitouch gestures do not work on the trackpad at all. For me it was frustrating, and I ended up deleting Windows simply because of the fact that multi-touch is not supported by Windows. However, basic trackpad functions work, for example tracking, right-clicking, and dragging windows.
All other drivers are fully functional. If you need any assistance with Bootcamp, visit the Apple Support website, or just post in this same forum and I will be glad to help you.
