13" Macbook (black), Snow Leopard, Boot Camp, Windows 7 display issue

OK I don't know where to post this. I couldn't find an appropriate forum under Boot Camp (nothing for display). Apologies if this is the wrong forum.
I am attempting to run Windows 7 using Boot Camp. Here is the behavior:
Booting Windows 7 without any monitor plugged in works fine.
Booting with an external monitor plugged in, I get the display on the external monitor. Now when I unplug the external monitor, the LCD display backlight is off and is completely dim. I had to reboot it in order for the LCD display to work again.
This is not a macbook display issue. But it has to do something with the way Windows 7, BootCamp are compatible with a macbook. Anyone seen this or know what the fix is?

I can not get my Win 7 (32) os to see my Mac 10.6 partition. Is there something I need to set or turn on to get this to work?
As for your problem, perhaps Windows is not seeing the FireWire bus?

Snow Leopard & Boot Camp & Windows XP & Bluetooth

Hi everyone,
I just bought a new iMac. I upgraded to Snow Leopard. And I installed Windows XP on Boot Camp. The installation went perfectly until I had to pair my wireless keyboard and mouse to Windows.
When the installation finished, I opened the Bluetooth Device on my control panel. I was able to scan for devices. My computer found both the keyboard and mouse. I was able to pair the keyboard, but I couldn't get the mouse to work. Trial and error, error, and more error occurred. (I know now about 0000 and the mouse.)
At one point, I unpaired the keyboard and restarted the machine. Now when I open the Bluetooth device it says:
"Device Status: Windows has stopped the device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
The bluetooth device was just working. I can't figure out how to make it work again. It won't find the mouse or keyboard. I tried installing and uninstalling the Bluetooth device from the device manager. I tried repairing the device drivers from the Snow Leopard disk. I've googled and googled.
Does anyone know how I can pair my Windows XP with my mouse and keyboard? Should I erase the partion and start over again?

For the record, I gave up and booted my computer back to Snow Leopard. After about a week, I decided to try to fix this problem again. I booted up Windows from Bootcamp. And miraculously the problem was solved. The bluetooth was working; I paired both the keyboard and mouse. I don't know what fixed the problem but it was fixed.

Snow leopard - Boot Camp - Windows XP

Hi Guys!
One quick question, I had installed Windows XP using Boot Camp on my iMac, when it was still running Leopard. The installation was successful, I don't go online using Windows, as I only use it to play some games with my children, and I don't want any virus... and mainly... I don't need Windows for anything else!!!
After installing Snow Leopard, do I have to update any Windows driver using Boot Camp?
If so, how do I do it? Just launch Boot Camp and let it look for the drivers?

About my XP partition, I use it solely to play games like, Zoo Tycon, CimCity, Lego, etc with my little children... so i have no back up... in case it goes bad... I don't lose anything, and reinstall XP. All my professional apps and files are on my iMac partition... Photoshop, Flash, etc... then I have both a bootable SuperDuper backup, and a Time machine backup too.
On XP, I just wanna make sure I have all the drivers installed to run the games ok...

Snow Leopard Boot Camp and Windows 7 64bit

I have a late 2006 Mac Pro with 2xDual Core 2.66ghz procs and 6 gigs of ram. I've been thinking of running Windows 7 64 bit in Boot Camp for a few games and had an EFI question. I searched thru the forum but can't seem to find an answer (possibly my own ignorance of not understanding, but that's not the point).
Since I'm running 32bit EFI will I be able to run the 64 bit version of Win7 in boot camp or am I limited to 32bit version?

It is a PITA.
Install a 32-bit version, as a mini-OS to bootstrap yourself into 64-bit;
Or, modify the DVD you will burn by editing the ISO, which can be done with VirtualBox etc.
I did it multiple times and posted a long rambling thread over on Boot Camp AD.
It is weird.
For fun, I install W7 x64 on PC, moved it over to Mac Pro and Windows gracefully just updated all the needed chipset drivers for me.
As usually, there are multiple ways to do anything.
Pull Mac drive and system, install a RAW drive or format as MBR and MSDOS, you'll want 3-4 partitions or multiple drives.
By using 32-bit version, you can then create a couple volumes.
8GB for editing the ISO and DVD or to run the installer from. This is a very fast way to do any install. Same idea works with Mac OS and restoring the DVD to disk.
When you burn Win7 DVD, do so at slow/reduced speeds.
20GB for first Win7 32-bit partition.
Whatever you want for x64.
Data volume?
A 64-bit can't be installed over 32-bit, but it will install to another volume all while you are booted into Windows 7 x32.
It took some playing around.
Modifying the ISO with a Windows utility worked, once but I never got the hang to do it again, kept getting unbootable copies and wasted DVDs.
Intel has UEFI 2.3 as the latest and I have been tempted to become EFI Group membership just to nuke the olde EFI32 - I now work mostly on a pair of i7 machines running 7.

Snow Leopard Boot Camp Install Woes

I'm having some trouble installing boot camp. I have a MBP 2.2 and I have just installed OS 10.6 and I am trying to reinstall my boot camp partition. I am using an HP external USB DVD drive (which has been used to installed boot camp successfully in the past and is what I used to install SL). Anyway, 10.6 installs with no problems and then I am able to use boot camp assistant to set up the partition and the computer restarts. Then the disc attempts to spin up (I am trying with both Windows 7 32-bit and Windows XP... both discs have been used successfully in other situations) and then the screen usually stays grey/blank. Sometimes I can hold option and I get the HDD icon and it hangs. If I disconnect the drive and start the computer I get the apple icon and then it flashes a circle with a line through it and goes no further. Does anyone have any ideas? I am pretty sure the drive and the discs are good because I have used them to install windows on other macs with no problems.

I've also got this problem, after upgrading to Snow Leopard I couldn't access my windows partition anymore, the startup screen would hang after clicking the arrow under Windows HD. We removed it with Boot Camp Assistant and now when we try and re-install Windows (XP), the installations progresses until it hangs on a grey screen (we don't make it to BIOS) and we have to restart.
Additionally after the installation attempt, we can't get past the grey screen of death on startup (we get the startup noise - no apple logo) and have to use reset my Mac's PRAM and NVRAM to progress.
Also, after going through this process a Boot Camp disk image is created but it's empty.
Disk utility isn't detecting any problems. Could we have removed the partition incorrectly and something is jarring the process?

Re-installed fresh Snow Leopard, Boot camp boots,but wont show on startup..

Ok, I had Boot Camp on my iMac with Snow Leopard fine. I decided to reinstall Snow Leopard fresh.
Chose the Mac HDD partition, it re-installed fine. I then thought I'd have to do the Boot Camp again, but I held don "alt" key and Boot Camp boots fine and works.
So I normally have the Boot Camp to boot 1st, as wife and kids use Windows. However I go into Boot Camp on Mac OS, and it doesn't show the boot camp startup disk. Where's it gone?
As I say everything is fine, apart from it now looks like its lost track of the Boot Camp partition.
Is there anyway I can get it back? I ran Boot Camp wizard on Mac, but it either wants to create a new Boot Camp partition, or run windows installer, both which I dont want.

Set the default startup disk in Windows.
There is no Boot Camp on Mac OS ("go into Boot Camp"?)
Try:
System Preferences / Startup Disk
On Windows, the Boot Camp Control Panel to used set the default OS
Wizard: by this assume Boot Camp Assistant, which is only a partitioning tool.
Boot Camp doesn't "boot," Windows boots.
Boot Camp - Assistant to create a partition
Boot Camp - Set of drivers and services
Boot Camp - Control panel in Windows to set default boot OS (Mac OS X volumes or Windows, with some other features for laptops I believe)
Personally, too many things use the same name and lead to misunderstandings.

Snow Leopard & Boot Camp

I have Boot Camp on one of my 13" macbooks and I cannot install Snow Leopard on the Mac side. I have the latest Tiger updates installed, but i get an "invalid drive" error message when I try to install Snow Leopard. Does anyone why this would be happening?

Wireless issues with MacBook Pro i5 in Boot Camp Windows 7 x64

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro i5 15''. I'm usually connecting to the 802.11n 5Ghz wireless network of my Time Capsule when running OS X, which works absolutely fine. When running Windows 7 x64 in Boot Camp though, this network can't be found and I have to connect to my secondary 802.11g network of an AirPort Express. Even this network connection usually dies after a few minutes of intensive use though (copying files, playing online games; it's fine with low activity like web surfing). It still appears connected normally, but no data is being transmitted. I have to reset the wireless adapter to get it to work again. The same network works fine for any OS X device.
The Windows drivers for the Broadcom chip in this machine seem really flaky. Anybody else have these problems or maybe a solution?

Yes, sorry, the Boot Camp area would have been a better place to ask. After some more googling I found a helpful thread though, which led me to download this driver package:

From it I installed the driver called "Broadcom 43225 802.11b/g/n", and presto, I can finally use my 802.11n network under Windows. Hope that's helping other people that may have this problem.

Snow Leopard, boot camp partition not mounting.

Hi all,
I have a system that was leopard, and I installed Bootcamp with Windows 7 64bit. Was working well until I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
The Bootcamp partition is not being seen in Snow Leopard. I can, however, hold down the option key on the Mac and select the window 7 partition to boot from.
I have looked through the forums but haven't really seen this issue addressed, or if It was, then I didn't see it (so sorry.)
Please any advise or help would be great.

On Mac Pro, I would not, I'd keep them separate.
With ANY OS update/upgrade (10.5. -> 10.6) I ALWAYS reformat and initialize the drives first before installing - there are changes to partition tables, and while some systems are fine, you should have backups for both Windows and Mac OS before you began, too.
Other than repairing Mac OS, and checking that you aren't using NTFS driver, and everything is up to date and SL-compliant... and you can set the default in 7 to reboot back into 7 or OS X.
4-core... does that mean 2006? or 2009?

What hard drives are compatible with OSX Snow Leopard Boot Camp?

Recently when the video card in my desktop Mac died, I decided to make some upgrades, one of them being the hard drive. After doing some research, I fixed on the Western Digital 3TB Caviar Green 3.5-Inch and had it installed at the same time as the new video card. I installed OS 10.6.8, opened up Boot Camp Assistant, set the partition sizes: 2.5 TB for my Mac side and 500 GB for the Windows. XP wouldn't install so I ordered Windows 7 and began trying to set up the Windows partition. Each time I tried, I got the same error -- Windows 7 couldn't install on the 500 GB partition since it was formatted GPT which was strange since when I looked at the partition inside of Disk Utility, it said NTFS. While troubleshooting, I came across the following:
・Mac users should know that WD's new drives do not support Boot Camp, therefore they cannot be used as a dual-boot hard drive.
・The MBR part of the hybrid partition table cannot work with 3TB hard drives. MBR is limited to 2TB.
・In a 32-bit MBR world, a disk larger than 2TB is probably invalid, and different OS's and tools react wildly differently when this is forced beyond 2TB.
I called Western Digital to confirm which of their drives were in fact compatible with Boot Camp and they replied since Boot Camp was a third-party application, they have no information on compatibility. They told me to call Apple to get the information. Before purchasing a new drive and sending back the 3TB WD, I want to be sure I know which specs to look for in a hard drive in deciding whether it is compatible with my machine. Any helpful advice or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for responding to my question. I guess I'm not sure I understand your reply though. I had no problem installing OS X on the 3TB WD Caviar Green and WD assured me that if I wanted to install only Windows 7 on it, there would be no compatibility issues. The problem lies with wanting the drive to be dual-bootable I guess via using Boot Camp (I know of no other way to go about it). The tech at OWC (where I bought the drive) said he had never heard of any problems with being able to install both Mac and Windows OS on the drive. In fact, he gave the same reply as yours: most hard drives should be able to work perfectly fine with your Mac. It's just that I can't get XP or Windows 7 (32 bit or 64 bit) to install on the 2nd partition, making the drive I have now not dual-bootable. The tech said 2TB hard drives were different and should solve the problem but when I asked him for any discernible spec I could look for in shopping for a replacement drive, he couldn't give me one, i.e. most drives should be okay. I have paid to have the 3TB installed and will have to pay to get the drive taken out and a replacement put back in -- I want to make sure whatever drive I put in this time allows me to have 2 partitions: one for my Mac OSX system and the other for my Windows enviroment (either XP or Windows 7).
If there is a work-around not involving Boot Camp, please let me know. I thought the reason for using Boot Camp as opposed to Disk Utility to create the dual-bootable drive was the benefit of using Mac drivers on the Windows side.
If there is another way, I don't understand why PC world made this blanket statement:

Can't Install Windows in Boot Camp - Windows Driver Issue

Before update to Mavericks, I had an installation of WIndows 7 running in Bootcamp. I had updated this to Windows 8.
Just prior to Mavericks release, the hard drive in my MacBook Pro started to fail. I had a full backup of the OS X partitiion, but did not have one of Windows.
After the drive was replaced, I did a fresh install of Mavericks and I'm planning on doing new installs of my apps over the coming days. (It's an opportunity to clear-out remains of old apps/OS's.) I have hit a wall with Boot Camp, though:
I used the Boot Camp Assistant to download the driver sets ("Windows support software") to a USB stick and partition the HD. However, although the Mac then boots off the Windows 8 (64-bit) installer DVD I can only get as far as choosing the installation language before I get stuck on the next step where it's looking for missing drivers. At first, I thought this was some reference to the ones downloaded from Apple, but I am now pretty certain that these just get installed after [in] Windows to allow access to the Apple hardware.
I have tried installing Windows 7 and get hung-up at the same point (which did not happen on 10.8).
Does anyone have any insight into what's happening and how I can get around the problem please?

Just chiming in - having the same issue as Bernard and Ian here myself, but with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. Trying to install on MBP Late 2013, Mavericks, using USB. I get through the bootcamp phase to the language selection in Windows and then get the drivers error message.
Called apple tech support and they indicated that OEMs can sometimes be lightweight versions of the DVD installers (i.e. they leave out certain drivers because they assume a certain set of hardware components will be present, typically hardware that perhaps only PCs have and Macs don't) - so they suggested trying to get my hands on a retail version of the ISO file that might have all of the drivers necessary. I tried downloading every feasible iteration of the windows trial ISOs here but every one of them gave me the same error message in Windows setup. My next step is to call microsoft to ask them for a "complete" ISO - I'm hoping they can cooperate since I do have a valid, un-used authentication code for my Windows product. I'll let you know if this works.
In the meantime - has anyone found an easier fix?

Mac Pro Boot Camp Windows XP issues

Hello all, I'm a new user on the forums and a proud owner of a Mac pro with 4gb ram and 500 gb hard drive. I installed Boot Camp and Windows XP Home Edition before adding any programs so the partitioning was split down the middle. However, once I installed my Windows Version of Adobe Production Studio and other software like McAfee and Spybot S&D I noticed a few issues with Windows. I might be overreacting, but the computer(on the windows side) seems slower than my previous computer (Powerspec 3ghz processor, 1gb RAM, Windows XP Prof) especially in adobe photoshop. Some problems that have occurred:
1.) System information only shows 1.99gb RAM on the windows side.
2.) Booting Windows from Boot Camp sometimes causes the entire system to restart and bring me back to boot camp if I'm still holding option, then a message saying that windows did not start normally appears and it asks if I want to start in safe mode.
3.) Adobe Photoshop with 75% Memory Partition lags when opening and saving large files like filmstrips.
4.) Windows start up and shut down take about 1-2 minutes while Mac OS X is almost instantaneous.
I haven't tried office yet, but the installation seemed to work. I'm not sure if anyone has experienced this, but this could be a cause for my problems, when I tried to install some programs, Spybot denied registry changes. I think I may have solved the problem, but I don't think it made a difference to programs that were already installed. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Bugs in ROMs were often patched by drivers, microcode and kernel extensions.
SATA has been changing more rapidly in the last year than in the previous two years - trying to hit a fast moving target.
Barefeats points to possible issues with disk read and writes with some drives and drive configurations.
Seagate had an issue with some of their drives taking more than a minute to spin back up after sleep or spin-down, which required firmware update or drive replacement.
It is also possible, running BootCamp and Windows now, to apply firmware updates to disk drives, something that Macs were excluded from before by Windows-only updates. The need for firmware updates has always been done with SCSI disk drives, and SATA drives have required updates to correct problems as well.
Not sure if we will ever see the type of EFI access that PCs have had to the BIOS, but sometimes you might be able to write something to nvram (as with Parallels right now) to get past a problem.
Tiger has seen some changes, in 10.4.0 and again in 10.4.4, that has impacted disk arbitration and RAIDs primarily but not exclusively, such that you should not be using a 10.4.0-.4.2 version of Disk Utility to repair a drive running a later version.

Snow Leopard + Boot camp Win 7 + HFS External Drive

My OSX partition shows up fine in my Bootcamped Windows 7 x64, and I can read/write to it fine. My external, a Western Digital 1tb drive formated HFS+, is connected thru firewire, and it doesn't seem to mount or show up at all.
Anyone else having this issue?

Snow Leopard 10.6.3 display issues with Autodesk Combustion 2008

Hi!!
Recently i do a update to 10.6.3 and my combustion got some glitches and display issues trying to browse thumbnail folders... even frozing combustion (I know, the software its old, and I know about the incompatibility since 10.6, footage issue, and others, but my boss doesnt care about it)
(Autodesk Maya '10 too, but theres a post for that)
So, in 10.6.2 I can browse previews of folders, but with 10.6.3 combustion comes unstable (yea.. more, hahaha). Apple has posted a new 10.6.3 v1.1 revision today 14th april...

Nutshell is to download and install the 64-bit version of MySQL, then try again. If you're still stuck try force re-installing the DBD modules, e.g. cpan -fi DBD::mysql (The perl installed in 10.6.x is 64-bit and doesn't like playing with the 32-bit database.)
