13" MacBook Pro Retina back cover won't come off?

I purchased this MacBook Pro Retina on eBay. When I got it, I noticed a screw in the lower left corner is sticking out. So I went online and bought a screwdriver to tighten it up. When I got the screwdriver instead of just tightening the screw down I decided to unscrew all the screws and check out how the inside of the laptop looks. Well after I unscrew all the screws, the cover will not come off. It comes loose on the top where the hinges are but something is holding it down on the bottom? Also this laptop is 8 months old and it only has 19 battery cycles? Maybe the seller replace the battery and they messed something up? What should I do?

Hi joshmorris31,
Welcome to the Apple Support Community!
I know startup issues can be both frustrating and concerning. In this situation I would suggest the troubleshooting steps located in the attached article to help you isolate and resolve the issue.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

There are different templates for iPhoto books and they differ from version of iPhoto to iPhoto, so explore the other options.

  • Is it safe for my MacBook pro retina plugged in while it's off?

Hello Everyone, so I have read that putting your MacBook pro in sleep while plugged in all the time is safe as long as you run the battery once in awhile, but what about if I want to shut down my MacBook pro Retina off without unplugging the charger and just leave it on for the rest of the night and then just turn my macbook pro back on still without unplugging the charger? Is it safe, no KABOOM!!? Lol ok I'm going to sleep now and I will turn off my Mac and unplug it for now until further instruction. Thanks in advance and good night!

you can leave it plugged in - when fully charged - charging stops to avoid overcharing your battery.
do not fully discharge your battery to 0% constantly, doing so will shorten your battery life.
    good luck

  • MacBook Pro Retina Display cover "glass" material?

We all know that the screen "cover" of the MacBook Pro with Retina display isn't actually a cover glass but a part of the screen itself.
But is it still actual glass/Gorilla Glass like on the old MacBook models or is it some kind of plastic now (that would get more easily scratched)?

I doubt it's gorilla glass at all, but if the others who replied did some research before jumping in with ridiculous claims, they'd find that it is arsenic free glass used in the display. Highly resistant to micro scratches.

  • Macbook Pro retina 15" Cover

This is not a technical question.
I use a metal strap in my wrist watch. This scratches the notebook.
Do you know if there is something to avoid the scratct without changing my wrist watch?

If your watch is scratching the casing (top or bottom) you may want to invest in a Speck case or something similar. If it's scratching on the palmrest, you may want to look at some sort of palmrest protector - such as the ones from Moshi (beware, though, they use an adhesive that is difficult to remove except using something like Goo Gone).
    Best of luck,

  • MacBook Pro Retina Fan Fault

I bought the first model of the MacBook Pro Retina back in December of 2012. After about 6 months, one of the fans started to make a strange clicking noise, as if it were hitting something with each rotation. I called Apple, who were no help, and then the problem went away after a day. It came back later that week and then went away again. Now in June of 2014, the right fan is making a strange noise when moving at a fast speed. It sounds like a vibrating buzz. It's very loud and very distracting. I am wondering if it will go away like the previous noise, but i am curious as to what the sound is. Also my MacBook freezes at least once a week and i am forced to hold down the off button. (This has happened on and off for months)

In regards to the fan, run an Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1509
In regards to the 'freezing', download and post EtreCheck:

  • Reinstall Mountain Lion on 13" macbook pro retina

hi! i am trying to reinstall mountain lion on my new 13" macbook pro retina, however, i cannot proceed and i encounter the message "We could not complete your purchase. OS X Mountain Lion is not compatible with this computer." please help!

I've called Apple Care and they learned me to the following in order to complete a clean install from Mountain Lion on a MacBook Pro Retina (otherwise it won't work): http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11273
But, like Clinton said, shouldn't your rMBP come with Moutain Lion on it? And if so, why can't you upgrade to 10.8.2 because I could (with software update) - but my problem was to clean reinstall ML on it from the App Store (that you stil can't do with a rMBP btw).
And a small question off-topic: How long is your (average) shutdown time on your rMBP 13"?

  • External optical drive won't work on macbook pro retina.

I have a macbook pro retina which doesn's have an optical drive. I have bought an optical drive. When I plug it in and put a disk in I can hear the disk spinning and the light comes on but nothing happens on my mac. It doesn't seem to recognise it. Any suggestions?

Just had that happen to me.
First, run Disk Utility and see if the SuperDrive (it is an Apple SuperDrive isn't it?) is listed. Is the disk you inserted shown? If not, hold down the option key and click the Apple menu - choose System Information and when that shows up, choose USB. See if it's listed there. If it is but neither the drive nor the disk you inserted appears on the Desktop, the side bar of the Finder window, or Disk Utility, return it for a refund (if it's within 14 days of purchase) or a replacement. That's what I had to do a few hours ago and the replacement works as it should.
BTW, if you want the disk you inserted back, and pressing the trackpad as you reboot doesn't eject the disk, as a last resort run Terminal and enter (copy and paste the following)
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
to try to force the disk to eject. It probably won't work (it didn't for me) but if it does, at least you get that disk back.

  • Macbook Pro retina (2012) randomly shuts down, won't wake

My Macbook Pro retina display mid 2012 with OS 10.9 has been acting more and more erratically.
When I close it to sleep, it often won't wake.  Space bar does nothing.  Sometimes after a minute the power button will wake it.  Other times one has to push the power button for over thirty seconds and then it will restart.  Also when leaving it to back up to a time capsule overnight it often will try to shut itself down.  I checked the power saver and automatic shut down panels and those are not set to do that.
Any ideas or do I have to take it to the genius bar?

Yes, especially if you are still under warranty or have AC.  Let Apple deal w/it.

  • Power button and voice control buttons won't work on my macbook pro retina

I found that my power and voice control buttons won't work on my new Macbook pro retina. I can't shut it down or restart it in any way. And Im afraid if I force to shut it down I can't turn on it cuz the power button won't work. What should I do? Any idea???

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
    Back up all data.
Quit Facetime and  Messages if either is running.
    Step 1
Hold down the option key and select
    Go ▹ Library
from the Finder menu bar. Move the following item from the Library folder to the Trash (either may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.imfoundation.IMRemoteURLConnectionAgent
Leave the Library folder open. Log out and log back in. Try the applications again. If they work now, stop here. Close the Library folder.
    Step 2
If you still have problems, quit again. In the Preferences subfolder, there may be several files having names that begin with any of the following strings:
    com.apple.imdsmsrecordstore
    com.apple.imservice
Move them all to the Trash. There may also be a file with the name "com.apple.imagent.plist". Move that to the Trash too.
Also in the Preferences folder, there's a subfolder named "ByHost". Open it and do the same thing.
Log out and log back in. Test again.

  • My iPhone 5 won't connect to my macbook pro retina over bluetooth?

My iPhone 5 won't connect to my macbook pro retina over bluetooth?

Ah, sure it actually won't.  I have the same problem, and I contacted Apple Support.  They told me that there is an incompatability between the iphone 5 and MacBook Pro Retina such that Bluetooth pairing is not possible.
The Support Agent actually had the audacity to tell me this was part of the design of the OS on the MacBook Pro, like Windows people saying, "That's not a bug.  It's a feature!!"
Personally, I think this is insane.  While I was trying to tether the iphone to the MacBook Pro retina for an internet connection, there are other reasons related to file transfers for which one would want to pair the iphone 5 with the MacBook Pro retina.
I am hoping this "feature" is fixed in iOS 7, and/or in some dot release of Mac OS 10.8.
By the way, the personal hotspot feature on my Verizon iphone 5 works great either via a wifi or USB connection.  There are occaisions, however, when one would 1) not have a USB cable, and/or 2) have another wifi relationship between the phone and a network that one would not want to have to "forget" in order for it not to connect to that wifi network.  The Macbook will not find the iphone as a wifi hotspot if the iphone is connected to wifi in the first place.  At least mine won't.

  • MacBook Pro Retina Wont Connect back to Monitor

    Hey Everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro Retina Early 2013 15in that is running OS X Yosemite - 10.10.2 - Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
At Work for the past 1.5 years i have been connecting to a Dell Monitor via a DVI to HDMI Cable to use as my primary screen and have never had any issues. During the day I often present on the projector in the BoardRoom a Dell 4610X using a direct HDMI cable.
The issue: Ever since I have updated my laptop to Yosemite, every time i connect my macbook to my monitor after its been connected to the projector it will no longer connect. The monitor will recognize that there is something connected but it wont show anything. Even if i try another display in the office the same thing happens. The issue will always resolve if i restart the computer.
Recently I had an issue with the Logic Board and it was replaced by an Apple Certified repair shop. This issue was happening even before the logic board was replaced and it is still having the same issues now, so I don't believe its an hardware issue.
Although this issue is not critical, its a nuisance to re-start my laptop each time i get back to my desk after a meeting in the boardroom...
I would high appreciate some help on this!!
    Thanks in Advance

    Something else to check ..
Open System Preferences > Network then select the Wi-Fi tab.
Drag the school wi fi network name to the top of the list.
You can open System Preferrences by clicking the System Preferences icon in your Dock
Or click System Preferences from your Apple menu icon top left in your screen.
    Or, from your Applications folder.

  • My new macbook pro retina won't connect to my iPhone 4s via bluetooth

Just bought macbook pro retina. have had iPhone 4s for two years and use it to tether my iPad to regularly no problem. however the macbook pro won't connect to the iPhone via bluetooth. it recognises it's there and a connection code is displayed, but when I enter the code it won't connect and the phone insists that I agree to 'forget this device'. how do I enable tethering so I can use the 3g signal to browse on my laptop whilst travelling please?

Only thing I could suggest would be to "Reset Network Settings" on the phone (Settings> General> Reset>) . Of course, this will forget and delete any saved Wi-Fi or network configurations, but if that's not a problem for you then, maybe worth a shot.
Although saying that, I think iCloud remembers old settings (if you are connected and sharing network configurations), so may not be a total loss.

  • Reinstalling FCP7 in my new Macbook Pro Retina Display. I have my serial numbers back to FCP1. But it tells me that I have an invalid serial number.  Why?

Reinstalling FCP in new Macbook Pro Retina from time machine backup.  Have all serial numbers back to FCP1 but I am warned I have an invalid serial number.  How can that be!  I need to install and use this weekend.
Thank you in advance for the help.

How, exactly are you doing this?
When I restored  my new computer from the time machine, the software was transfer to the new machine, in the past when double clicking the icon it would come up and ask for the serial numbers.  This time was the same with the exception of:
I did not enter an invalid serial number, I tried all the numbers I have.  But none of them worked.
I will try to install from discs.
    Thanks for your help.

  • MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update 1.1 Won't Install

Hi Everybody. I am having a really annoying problem with my rMBP. I have the update labaled: "MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update 1.1" Available in my Mac AppStore app. After I click update, I get a prompt letting me know that the laptop needs to be plugged in, I hit ok. It downloads (very small file) and asks me to Restart or hit "Not Now". I click restart, the system reboots into a updating page where a status bar quickly completes. The laptop restarts again back to OSX. I open up the appstore and goto the updates page and what do I see? 1 available update: MacBook Pro Retina SMC Update 1.1, like I never did anything to begin with.
    My system info is:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro10,1
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.6 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          6 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP101.00EE.B02
      SMC Version (system):          2.3f32
      Serial Number (system):          xxx
      Hardware UUID: xxx
Please help this is really annoying.

I had the same problem. Tried all the proposed fixes. Nothing worked. This solved my problem:
    1. Install a fresh copy of mountain lion on an extern disk
    2. Startup from that disk
    3. Update to 10.8.3.
    4. Restart
    5. Open app store, go to updates. You should see the SMC 1.1. update.
    6. Click update
    7. Restart
Once the update installed (fan will go quickly to max speed during startup) switch back to your internal disk and start up. Now the SMC 1.1. update shouldn't show up in the app store/upadtes.
