13'' MBP (2012 mid) can't recognize new hdd: HITACHI 5K1000 1T

MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY
I'm using a MBP 13'' 2012 mid.
My original HDD is down, so I bought a HGST(HITACHI) 5K1000-1000 1TB (HTS541010A9E680) 6.0 Gb/s , but after I installed the hdd, the system could not recognize the new hdd at all. So I run a recovery partition from a external driver, nothing appears in Disk Utility except recovery partition.
But if i connect the new hdd through USB-HDD cable, everything is ok.
PS: I've tried a old SUMSANG sata hdd, it works fine with my MBP.

Thanks for responsing.
You're welcome...
but the fact is my old Samsung working fine in the internal bay, my crashed original hdd can at least be detected from internal bay. how can the hard drive cable be broken.
Some drives will work with a faulty SATA cable - some won't. The fact that you can't boot with the HGST suggests that the SATA cable is faulty/defective.
Is it true that MBP 13'' 2012 mid has compatibility issue with 6.0Gb/s SATA III ?
Not that I've heard - that's why I suspect the cable. SATA III is just more 'demanding'.
BTW, I got your reply but NOT on the board - it's been happening a lot, for me, lately...

  • IMac G5 won't recognize new HDD restored from TM

    Hi All -
Close to the finish line but can't cut through the ribbon -
Received the gray screen with kernel panic dump - concluded HDD failure (no rotation).
Installed new HDD (2TB) and restored from TimeMachine (nice!).
iMac would not recognize the HDD at boot - so I have been trying everything I can find in the discussions:
    Reset PRAM, Reset-all
    New PRAM battery
    Apple Hardware Test passes OK
Disk Utility sees new HDD and formats/partitions OK (HFS Journaled)
Power supply caps look good (main power supply was also rebuilt last month)
Tried DiskWarrior - but it only gets so far before the grey screen and kernel panic (where this all began).
With DiskUtility, I can see contents of the new HDD as restored by TM - just can't boot from it.
Disk Utility was able to verify Disk - OK.
I've run out of things to try -
    Looking for suggestions.

I belive it was running 10.5.8 (my footer is out of date).  I would have upgraded further if not for the PPC limitation.
I did use the original disk that came with the computer for the restore activity (which basically copied the TM to teh new internal HDD).
Since the original disk (10.4) did not support TM, could that be the root of the disconnect?  If so, do I need to repeat the recovery with the 10.5 install disk?

  • Pavillion dv2910us does not recognize new HDD

    Hi,
I have a HP Pavillion dv2910us with a nearly broken HDD (it makes weird sounds and lags quite often). Therefore I bought a new HDD on ebay. I bought the same Type (Toshiba MK2552GSX) with the same capacity (250 GB). But when I install it and try to install Windows on it, the Installation wizards tells me that it doesn't recognize any HDD in the system. When I connect the HDD via an USB cable to a different computer it works perfectly.
I even mirrored the old HDD to the new one but it is still not working.
Does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong? Somehow there is not possibility in the BIOS to activate the new HDD. Do I need to buy an orignial replacement HDD from HP?
    Thanks for the help,
    Hendrik

    Hi,
You don't need to buy a HDD from HP, the one you've bought should work perfectly.
Did your old HDD have a plastic adapter on the end to enable the drive to plug in vertically rather than horizontally?  If it did, ensure this is securely fitted to the new drive.
Does the metal caddy from your old drive fit the new drive ok?
Does your old hard drive get detected if you install it in the notebook?
Look forward to hearing from you.
    Best wishes,
    DP-K

  • Tecra 8000 does not recognize new HDD

I read this forum and searched Google, but nothing helps.
I think the HDD on Tecra 8000 ( Pentium II , 266 Mhz ) is "dead".
I tried to replace it with one from another laptop to see if that would work.
The laptop doesn't recognize it, although I put everything back as the original.
Is there a special way or do I have to change something in the Bios?

    Hi
The BIOS settings dont need to be changed
As long as you use the compatible HDD, the BIOS should recognize the HDD automatically without any big troubles
What HDD did you use? What size, interface, etc
The Tecra 8000 is a oldie and I think you could use only the 4GB; 6GB; 9GB; 10GB; 14GB IDE HDDs.
Bigger HDDs would be not recognized by BIOS.

  • MacBook Pro 2012 won't recognize new HDD

So my 2012 model macbook pro needs a new hard drive. I created a restore key for mavericks (my OS), installed a new hard drive and restarted.
I can boot from the Recovery key no problem and I get the Install Mac, disk utility options etc.
However when trying to format the new hard drive it won't show in the list.
The old hard drive shows up in disk utility so its not the connector.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance
    Rod.

    Isadiohc,
your Mid 2012 MacBook Pro didn’t come with an installation disc, so that’s of no concern.
If you reïnstall your Hitachi HDD, you could try the following steps to see if they would repair it: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, select the First Aid tab if it’s not already selected, then press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get past the grey folder with the flashing question mark now?
There’s a chance that your internal SATA cable is faulty, but there’s no firm evidence yet that that’s the cause of the problem. Do you have access to another Mac? If so, buy a SATA-to-USB adapter (they’re not expensive), and try connecting your SSD externally to the other Mac, running Disk Utility there to reformat your SSD. Once it’s been reformatted, try reïnstalling it in your MacBook Pro to see if OS X Internet Recovery will properly download your MacBook Pro’s original version of OS X from Apple’s servers.

  • Macbook 2012 Mid: Can't mount USB mass storage after upgrading to Mavericks

    Hi guys,
I'm having big problems with USB mass storages. After upgrading to Mavericks my Mac doesn't see some USB storage devices (mostly USB sticks and Android phone's memory cards via USB. My external USB 3.0 hard disks work fine) at all even though the devices themselves (for example my Android phone) are clearly recognized according to the System Report. When I plug them in, they don't show up on my Finder or on Disk Utility.
I've searched everywhere and it seems like some other people are having the same problem, none seems to offer a definite solution. I've even formatted my HD and reinstalled Mavericks from the recovery partition. Now it mounts a USB stick that was in one of the USB ports at the time of installation but still doesn't read anything else! The funny thing is when I boot into Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition, I can mount any USB devices including the USB stick and the Android phone I'm having problems on Mavericks without any problems. I can even see then when I boot into the recovery so there's clearly something wrong with Mavericks.
Any chance someone has figured out a solution for this? Apple should've address this long time ago.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem? Note: If the devices are not in Mac OS X format, they normally won't mount in safe mode, but they should appear in Disk Utility.
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Disk Utility can't format new HDD

So I just got a new 4TB drive (WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM) for my Mac Pro that I'd like to partition... one volume for Time Machine on the boot drive, the other volume for back-up for the two other drives I have in there. I just installed it and initialized the HDD, formatted to Mac OS Extended, but since that finished, I now have two problems:
1.) Disk Utility cannot/will not format the drive (the HDD itself, not the volume). It's not that the Erase option is greyed out or not working, it isn't even there. When I select the disk, it only has two options... First Aid and Partition.
2.) Partition only works partially. I can add a partition, but the Name, Format, and Size fields are all greyed out, so I can't rename the volume or adjust it's size.
    What am I missing here?

Never mind. Found this thread, did what it said, and it all works fine now.

  • Can "Lion" recognize 3 tetrabyte Hitachi hard drives

Thinking of springing for one of those 'colossal' drives for video work.  Thanks.

OSX Lion and also Snow Leopard have no problems with 3TB harddisks.
When problems arise then almost always due to the used enternal harddisk enclosure not being able to handle 3TB harddisks.
So be sure to get one that can handle.

  • Satellite L - Vista can't recognize the HDD

Ok I have spent the past 5 days or more trying and failing to install vista on the wretched laptop without any luck and ive finally succumbed to asking for help here.
Does anyone know what driver I need to use to allow Vista to recognise the SATA drive? I obtained some drivers from Toshiba download section under chipsets section and put on a USB drive but they just do not work. I keep getting the message "Windows cannot locate the drive media to install windows" or similar message. If I dont load any drivers then its just total failure - Windows install procedure says it cant find the target media or some such message. It expands files, loads files then stops and gives this message. It gives all sorts of other stupid messages that would normally make me want to take the offending laptop /pc and throw it out the window. Needless to say that hasnt ever happend yet.
Also the computer makes some odd scraping/clicking noises when installing - it seems to come from under the laptop - it sounds like their is either a problem with the hard drive or DVD drive or both. I then throws up a blue screen of death message "Hard Error"
I know this isnt much to go on and my error messages are a bit vague (i must have spent countless hrs installing and have got so many error messages to send me into brain dead mode) but thought id just ask to get some ideas - thanks.

Can anyone assist with identifying the right driver for the L300 PSLB8E notebook?
When i load vista and ask for load drivers i get this list
    - Intel(R) 82801IR/IO SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH9R)
    - Intel(R) 82801IR/IO SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH9R)
    - Intel(R) 82801HEM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E)
    - Intel(R) 82801HEM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E)
    - Intel(R) 82801HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M)
    - Intel(R) 82801HR/HH/HO SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH8R)
    - Intel(R) 82801HR/HH/HO SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH8R)
    - Intel(R) 631xESB/632xESB SATA RAID Controller (Workstation ESB2)
    - Intel(R) 82801GHM SATA RAID Controller (Mobile ICH7RM)
    - Intel(R) 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH7M)
    - Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA RAID Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
    - Intel(R) 82801GR/GH SATA AHCI Controller (Desktop ICH7R/DH)
These are the extracted files from iata78_enu.exe
These drivers only get listed in vista when untick the dont show non compatible drivers tick box. This suggests these drivers wont work for me. I tried one of the mobile drivers and the install failed for the 100,22nd time. Im getting right fed up and need to get this notebook out of my head and sorted or im going to go insane.

  • MacBook can't boot from HDD

    Hello friends!
Please help me with my macbook late 2009.
I was a problem with SMC conntroller and take mac to service. After one week i took it and all looks good, working for few days without any issues. Today, after 2 hours of use my mac is hung and i use hard reset to reboot it. After reboot, gray screen appears without any action. I tried to reboot it again and again and after 5-10 attempts I see all my disk partitions with recovery mode and tried to start DISK UTILITY to test hdd. Disk utility also hung on scanning disks. I have no luck to tried start it again - always gray screen, question folder or O with /. I tested old hdd with other mac and it's worked fine, I tried to use another, new 1Tb WD HDD 2.5 - connected it and try to power on with recovery flash drive. Mac started without issues and I can boot from flash drive, started disk utility but mac can't find new HDD at all. Please note - I use a lot of methods, tried to reset SMC / PRAM/VRAM without luck. Safe mode also not helped, verbose mode show me "Still waiting root device" error for old HDD, but sometimes mac show all my old disk partitions - after I chose Macintosh HD - I see O with / and that's all.
Please help me to figure out issue. I think this not a HW issue... but why mac not show new HDD? Really very strange problem, all day with tests w/o luck..SMC controller looks to be working fine - mac starts, charge battery, cooler speed is managed by motherboard fine.
May be new HDD is incompatible?
    Old HDD -
    Looking forward for your suggestions.

Looks like this is hdd flex cable issue... I just move it when mac starts and partition select menu appears instead of grey screen or question mark. When I select partition (recovery or macintosh hd) after 20-30 seconds I see O w /.
Can anyone confirm that this might be? I will order new flex so this should be solution or not? I read a lot of google links and see that this is often problem for 2009-2010 macs.
    Still waiting your advices
Apple should improve these type of cables as this not reliable as I think.

  • Problem with new HDD for Imac

I have installed a new HDD on my Imac power PC (!0.4.7) On powering up the disk utility can see the new HDD, but it says it is unmounted and it is not visible in list of volumes available for installing the OS. How can I wake it up?

You need to format it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in Dick Utility.
You do this by selecting Erase from the options at the top of the window.

  • Can I use RAM from MBP 15 late 2011 to MBP 13 mid 2012

    Hi All,
I presently have an MBP 15 late 2011 (running at 4GB RAM) - which I feel is very slow. Had been reading a lot of discussion threads and most viable solution seems to be to upgrade my RAM - found it in Crucial.com (8gb x 2 kit).
I have another MBP 13 mid 2012 (running at 2GB RAM). I was wondering if I can transfer my 4GB RAM from my MBP 15 to my MBP 13.
Will there be any compatibility issues? Will this work?
    Can anyone advise please?
    Thanks.

Hi, anyone know. can i install samsung 850 pro 1 tb solid state drive in my "macbook pro 2012 mid". any compatibility issues?

"In addition to TRIM, I just stumbled on this discussion. One of the posters is having some odd difficulties with that combination."
Yup and that's why I've avoided any 3rd party SSDs.
    I only deal with:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC
I've done 6 so far and no problems at all; formatting, installing nothing. Total no brainer. I did have a small formatting problem on my last one but I called them and solved the problem before the guy got on the phone. He immediately offered a return sticker (RMA) but I didn't need it and the MBP is running fine.
