13' MBP: horrible battery life with Lion

I upgraded to Lion a month or so ago.  I really like the functionality of it and it's features, but my battery life has gotten horrendous! I've done everything I can find to try to fix it.  I've reset the SMC, reset the PRAM and NVRAM and even installed the gfxCardStatus app (which said my card wasn't compatible with it) and nothing has worked.  If it helps, I have the baseline 2010 MBP with 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 RAM, and NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256MB graphics card.
At 50% it just told me I have an hour left when I used to have 3 or more! Is there anything I can do to fix this?

In addition to the suggestions in
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.7/en/mh21207.html
be sure that your System Preferences > Time Machine is set to "OFF."
When ON but not connected to an external disk andexternal power adapter,
Lion's TM writes backups to your startup disk. This, and any other avoidable hard disk use, will reduce available battery time.
(BTW, per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490,
portables with built-in batteries do NOT require calibration)

  • Horrible battery life with brand new iPod touch 2G

There is definitely something going on with the battery life on my 2G. I just got a 32GB iPod touch 2G on Wednesday to replace my 32GB iPod touch 1G and the battery life is atrocious.
I charged it up fully and Fetch/Location Services is disabled. Backlight was set to auto and WiFi was on. I browsed the net for about an hour (no music playing), watched a 6-minute YouTube video, and played five minutes of X-Plane.
The 20% battery message came up after about an hour and a half of total on time from a fully charged battery. My 1G would have been above 70% at that point.
Then last night with a fully charged battery, I read a few posts on Apple Insider, played some Solitaire, then put the device to sleep, and awoke this morning to find the battery at 20% with a warning message. I always have WiFi on.
Now I am using my 2G no different than my old 1G -- I have the exact same usage patterns including WiFi usage, yet battery life is much, MUCH worse. What's going on?

Fully charge the iPod a few times, then use it until it goes out of battery. Do this 7-8 times, then check the battery life again - new batteries do this often in the beginning.

  • Battery life with Lion OS is very low, why?

I recently installed Lion OS, since then my bettery life has dropped from 7 hours to 2 1/2 when fully charged.  Seems like the processor os running full speed all the time.  In fact the computer is very hot, fan is running, etc.  Thoughts?

    D Funk Orinda,
It could be a 3rd party software. For me it was the Adobe Flash Player / Safari causing my woes. I downloaded and installed the Adobe Flash Player 11 beta and all has been fine since. No more system lock ups, high CPU usage, CPU heat, fans running loud or battery life issues due to flash player in Safari. I also performed a 'clean' install using a DVD I created from Discussions in this forum.

This isn't an issue. Notice the screen prior to the one that shows usage has an iCloud section and a Manage Storage button. For this button to activate ios needs to download a few kb from icloud. Switching back to this screen forces ios to download those few kb.

  • IPhone 3gs Battery life with 3.1 firmware

Any news regarding battery life with firmware 3.1???? I have lost at a minimum 25% after upgrading from 3.0.1 to 3.1. Have reset....the device alone and with iTunes....Need help...

I originally posted this in the wrong discussion...
Since upgrading to 3.1, it looks like the biggest battery drain is due to using PUSH with my Exchange email. I can turn off PUSH, use FETCH (even over 30 minute polling intervals) and battery life is close to 24 hours on a charge. Turning on PUSH, but not using it for email (other than my .Mac account (MobileMe), decreases the life by a couple of hours, still well beyond the normal 10 hour work day.
Turning PUSH on for 3 Exchange folders (Inbox and 2 sub folders) results in a drastic reduction in battery life. It can use over 50% charge while on standby... over a 3 hour period. I've managed this to an acceptable (8-12 hours, depending on phone calls) by limiting using Exchange rules to keep most important email to the Inbox and one sub-folder (I may eventually leave all important stuff to the Inbox) and move other stuff into different folders that I can still check on occasion.
Other PUSH activities, using apps like BeejiveIM, AP News, MLB.com, i.TV and even .Mac don't seem to affect the phones battery life too badly.
I'm wondering if Exchange w/PUSH is doing too much, besides listening for new mail and alerting on it. Could the process be simplified to only listen, alert, and mayby increment the count (not downloading headers or message bodies until one actually checks for messages... the iPhone still polls once you open a mail folder anyway).

  • What can I do to save my battery life with the new ios 7.3 update

I Loved the ios 7.3 update. My battery lasted for the whole day and I use my phone a lot. I did the ios 7.3 update yesterday and my battery life is horrible. With 2 hours into my day today I was down to 80% battery and I hardly used my phone at all. I love my iphone, but this update was a horrible mistake for Apple!

Thank God that I am not the only one who lost battery life in 7.0.3.
I haven't changed settings from 7.0.0 to now. So I am not going to change settings. With that said my brightness is always at about half or lower, depending on the ambient light. Bluetooth is always off. LTE has always been on since I bought the 5 last year. Wifi stays on, connected or not. So with all these settings as they are, there has been a huge difference in battery life from 7.0.2 to 7.0.3.
I could swear that I went from 100% to 83% charge while I slept for 7 hours. ***??? Really?
I'll test it out again tonight.
I am at work and I turned off LTE for s&g. And still saw 5% drop in 40 minutes with a 2 or 3 minute use.

  • Battery life with os x 10.8? Dies SO fast?

So I just upgraded to os x 10.8.0 today and when I initially bought my macbook pro, the battery life was kinda already pretty bad. It's a 2009 model that I bought off of ebay and the user said he had replaced the battery 2 months ago (so around April or so). He said that the battery would last 5-6 hours with average use (surfing the web, youtube, facebook, etc.). He completed wiped the hard drive clean before sending me the laptop and when I got it, I installed Snow Leopard and the battery life was CRAP. it lasted me maybe 3.5-4 hours. So i emailed him and he said that he had the most recent operating system before, but he wiped it clean to send to me and included the snow leopard installation discs. So, I searched it on google and everywhere and I still don't know why. I thought that upgrading to 10.8 would help, but it's exactly the same. My laptop is currently on the lowest brightness before it goes completely black, I'm watching a youtube vid, on facebook, and typing this. My battery went from 100% to 86% in 30 minutes. 30 minutes! That's ridiculous! Would upgrading to 10.8.1 or 10.8.2 or even to mountain lion help?? I don't know what to do!!

    Hello,
    Thanks for your suggestions.
    I've resolved this problem.
As i guessed, the cable connection between the samsung lcd monitor and the mac mini was the source of the problem.
I bought a DVI cable, right on replacing the D-Sub cable into new DVI one, it's gone.
I feel lucky because i don't know what was the exact problem but it's fixed.

  • Horrible battery life after 10.8.4 update?

    Computer: 2010 MacBook Pro 15"
    OSx version: 10.8.4
I updated my computer yesterday to OSx 10.8.4.
While I was on 10.8.3 after a startup with nothing running my mac showed 5-7 hours or so of battery life.
With 10.8.4 it now shows 2-3 hours if im lucky after a startup with nothing running.
As I post this I started at 100%, I have been using my computer for not even 20 min now and its down to 80%
The computer shows the battery condition is normal, and my energy saver settings are optimized with graphic swithcing, hard disk sleep, etc..
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

In that case I suggest reinstalling OS X:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install 10.8.4 (or should.) If this does not help, either, then take the computer in for service.

  • Quad Core MBP saving battery life by only using two cores

I am trying to use my MBP 8,2 with two of my four cores shut down in order to preserve battery life. Is this at all possible through 3rd party apps?

This whole thread reminds me of some of the nutty ideas American carmakers came up with during one of the first gasoline shocks back in the 70's. Don't remember whether it was Chrysler or GM, hellbent on keeping their huge gas guzzler engines, came up with the idea of disabling one or more cylinders when "not needed". A totally Rube Goldberg-ian contraption ensued, more prone to failure than any potential gas it may have saved.
And while on topic and following Señor Grant's lead, last Wedneday decided to take my MBP to the edge. 8% battery charge remaining, that is. That took the whole of 7:15, while running at 50% backlight, WiFi, MS Word and two browsers going (all four cores, too). Then on Thursday 10.7.4 + Safari 5.1.7 came out. So, back to the drawing board on Friday. 7:20 and 6% remaining, got tired of waiting and all this mine is bigger than yours BS and plugged it back in...

  • Curiosity of battery life with WiFi off

Has anyone tried this? I would imagine someone would get a little more than ten hours with wifi off.

Anyone have the patience to use their iPad for 10+ hours without going online? Me neither . Using my MBP to get best battery life, I sometimes turn off BlueTooth and WiFi, and that gives a very small lift - no more than 30-40 minutes so I'd guess, and it is only a WAG, that the difference between using WiFi and BT or not using them both would be perhaps an extra hour on the iPad.

  • Battery Life with ML

    Hi Everyone,
I don't know if I post on the good forum or if I should post on the MacOS forum.
My problem is very simple. I migrate my Macbook Pro Unibody October Late 2008 From Leopoard to Mountain Lion (fresh install).
Since this migration my battery life drop from arround 2 hours to 30 minutes maximum.
I have arround 800 cycles on my battery so I know it's not very new but I didn't understand why the battery life drop so much.
I read a lot of paper about ML and battery life problem. I tried to reset SMC, PRAM, re-install etc. But it's still the same.
Another point which is very surprise is this :
When I unplug the magsafe,  the battery is working arround 30minutes, then the Macbook is going to sleep (arround 3% battery left). If I plug the magsafe again, resume the macbook and unplug the magsafe when the laptop is resuming, it's displaying me 0% but it's working perfect for more than 1 hour (I'm currently using my laptop with 0% left since more than 30minutes).
It seems that the battery is not the problem but it's maybe the SMC with ML. I don't know.
    I didn't try to re-go to Leopard.
Anyone know something about this ?
    Thanks for your help,
    Regards

I tried to use all the battery (with the status at 0%) and it's working for like 2 hours.
Then I reset the SMC and the NVRAM. After I re-plug my magsafe. It's charging the battery very fast (like 30min) until 99%. Then the 1% left takes many time (maybe more than 1 hour).
After this, I remove the magsafe and the battery indicator seems good (in 20min it decrease from 100% to 80%).
The Battery Health Stats indicates that I have 3400mAh.
At 74% my laptop goes to sleep and the battery indicator was at 0%. I replug the magsafe and remove it when the computer is resuming, now I'm at 72%.
    That a really strange problem.
Anyone can bring me some help ?
    Thanks,
    Regards
PS : I upgrade to Mavericks and the problem seems the same

  • No wifi and horrible battery life after iOS 7 install on iPhone 4S!

After the iOS 7 install on my iPhone 4S, my battery life is markedly worse and my phone will not connect to my home wifi. Every other device, including my wife's iPhone 5 and two iPad 2's, still connect perfectly. Please help. I wish I could go back to 6.1.3.

I've had issues since the upgrade too-messages wouldn't load, phone locked up and would turn off at random times. Then I noticed my data usage going up a ton in one day and checked and it wasn't connecting to my home wifi. Called tech support and they went through all the troubleshooting they could find and nothing helped. Had to go upgrade. You might try to reset your network settings, but that didn't help with mine

  • Pick up metal objects with zen micro headphones? battery life with firmware 1.02

    hey all
just purchased my zen micro couple days ago.
the package we got here in downunder is satifying. included were the wired remote and also the stand/case with belt clip. these were the only reasons that made me choose this over the ipod mini.
this has not occurred to me until tonight, but the headphones seems to act as magnets and were stuck to each other as the phones were dangling
i never noticed this happening with other phones
also the battery life of my zen was horrendous. its lasted 5 hrs with eq and smart volume on. the zen was on hold the whole time as the actions were controlled by the wired remote.
this was with the firmware that was shipped with the player .0.03 i believe
have just updated the firmware now, and will be testing the battery life to see if the problem is rectified.
if not, then an exhange for an ipod is inevitable.

Yep, SV is a battery killer, around a 50% drop in life has been meaured and the effect is known to be pretty negligible.
And as others have said, them headphones have magnets in, like pretty much any speaker

  • How to expand battery life with iOS5 on iPhone 3GS, it's shorter than before?

I upgraded to iOS 5 and since then the battery doesn't seem to last that long any more. Are there any settings I could change to improve that?

Just as a heads up -- I've been out all day for the last two days with my 3G without recharging, and I still have a half-full charge at the end of the day with bluetooth on (though not paired all the time) with Wi-Fi on, and with three or four hours of internet and music usage a day. I don't fetch data, but have it set to check e-mail every 15 minutes. And it has been on 3G the entire time...it doesn't run down as fast as some people might think -- in fact, it is a lot longer battery life than any other 3G phone I have owned from ATT.

  • BATTERY LIFE WITH MACBOOK PRO/LOGIC

wondering who is using a Macbook Pro while running Logic?
i posted in an Apple Forum a few days ago, and some people have said that they can get up to 4 hours of life from their battery. i just bought my machine in January, so i find it hard to believe that my battery could need replacing already?
if im using this computer strictly for Logic and audio production, can anyone recommend which battery setting in my preferences i should select?

With battery life, you either optimise for time (low performance), or high performance (less time).
Logic is a performance based app, and so if you are using plugins and so on, you are working your CPU hard and therefore going to run the battery down quicker.
Really, for Logic, I really recommend running on the power supply for the most part.
