'14 -- 13" Macbook Pro Retina Temperature

Hey Guys,
I recently bought a 2014 13" Macbook Pro Retina base model [2.6 GHz i5, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD] and I am having a temperature issue. When watching videos (Hulu/Youtube) at 480p the computer will reach temperatures of to 80-90 °C. Sometimes it will even reach about 99 °C to the point where I do not feel comfortable to keep playing the video. I am currently updated at the time [10.10.1] of this posting with also using the latest version of Google Chrome.
My brother has an ultrabook (windows) computer. I can't remember the model number of the Acer, but it has an intel 1.6 GHz i5-4200U, 8GB RAM, Raid 0 x2 128GB SSDs @ 2560 by 1600 pixels 13". His ultrabook (with a weaker/slower CPU and 4400 intel graphics [compared to the Iris 5100 in mine]) can handle 20+ tabs and watch a 480p video (Hulu/Youtube with Chrome) without going above 55-60 °C.
It seems with those numbers that my i5 should be able to downclock and keep a lower temperature then his Acer. It feels like the computer is just running too hot, either to a bad cooling system design or most likely due to a poorly applied thermal compound between the heatsink and CPU. I'm not 100% sure if my thoughts are founded true in the community and would love to hear your thoughts on this subject and to what action do I have to take to resolve this issue without opening the laptop up itself.

Google Chrome is a resource hog and has a poor record of compatibility with OSX.  Use Firefox, Opera or Safari instead and that will help woth your temperature problem.
the temperatures that you are reporting are not unusual for video on a MBP.  If you are nervous about them, use a cooling pad.  Note that there are sensors that will shut down the MBP before it commits Hari Kari due to overheating.

    All the temperatures you report are within acceptable tolerances for the stated activities,.  Personally I would rid the MBP of Google Chrome and its various parts since among browsers it is a resource glutton.  I use Firefox, Safari and Opera.

  • Poor battery life and high temperatures on MacBook Pro Retina 15"

    I'm having never-ending problems with poor battery life and high temperatures on a MacBook Pro Retina 15"
    I took it in for service and they told me it needed a new logic board and replaced it.  When I asked why they were vague about the reasons, they said "it just needed one, it failed some test".  I now have the computer back and it runs the same way it always did.  I bought this laptop because it was supposedly capable of high end video editing in 1080P (or so Apple's website claims) and also photo editing.

    However, when I'm just browsing the web and emailing it runs quite warm and battery life is quite poor.  Sometimes doing those same activities I would say it gets so warm it's almost uncomfortable to have on your lap and the fans are running fast enough to become noticably noisy.  I'm also driving only one screen at and a time and I heard that the MacBook Pro can supposedly do three screens.
    If actually try to do something like video editing with final cut pro the laptop gets really hot, the fans are on full blast and battery life drops to only an hour or two.  I think when I rendered just a 3 or 4 minute clip once I got less than hour of battery life.  I will have to time again.
    Anyway most people (including the sales guys) are telling me no way this is not normal.  When I play with demos in the store browsing the web they are not getting warm or hot to the touch.  My friend's 2013 MacBook Air is also NOT getting warm to the touch doing the same activities.
    I installed iStat Pro so I could check the temperature and fan speeds.  I'm seeing temperatures of 70+ on the GPU, 85+ on the GPU diode and 65+ on the CPU heatsink along with elvated fan speeds above 5K which becomes noticeably noisy.  I understand that might be normal for the most processor intensive tasks but it really doesn't seem right for just light web browsing and e-mailing.  (I also may have viber and skype open but that shouldn't matter).  CPU usage is usually running between 2-10% as this is all happening to.
    Furthermore, straight from the specs:
    Intel HD Graphics 4000
    NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory and  automatic graphics switching
    I am assume "GPU" and "GPU diode" are temp measurements on the discrenete NVIDIA video card, especially since MacBook Airs from the same and newer generatio do not have this reading.  Since Apple Claims the graphics "automatically switches" it seems all the harder to believe the GPU is reaching 85+ when in theory it shouldn't even be activated.  I mean, shouldn't the INtel HD Graphics 4000 be capable of simple web browsing and e-mailing?  Especially with only one screen activated (be it it the internal or an external)?
    What should I do here?  When I asked the repair guys "OK well what is the normal operating temp range for the various sensors" they said "Sorry Apple doesn't provide that info".

    Just web browsing and basically doing nothing I'm hear a lot of aduible fans, I'm getting 85C+ on GPU diode, 65+ on cpu heatsink.  I since installed anohter program that shows me not just the CPU heatsink but the cores and the cores are at 90C+.
    Seems like a lot of heat for doing nothing.  Not only that but I have these problems with no external monitor while on battery power too.
    I don't know what to do.  They already replaced the logic board.  Others seem to get advertised battery life out of Apple products and not have products that get **** near hot enough to burn you while just web browsing or watching a movie let alone advertised tasks like Photoshop and Final Cut Pro.

  • Faulty temperature sensors on Macbook Pro Retina??

    I got a Macbook Pro Retina 2.7 GHz Intel Core i7 16GB ram with solid state driving running 10.8.2 about 3 weeks ago and for the most part it's run quiet, even when I would use it on my lap and it would get a little hot, the fans never got really fast. Last night I ran Folding@Home for the first time and the fans got really loud. Now, this didn't surprise me as I was using a program that probably uses a lot of the CPU. I shut down and left my machine off all night. This morning the fans turned on ~15 seconds after startup. No programs running, and the computer is on a cool surface and is cool to the touch, but the fans are going crazy. So and reset the SMC (at least I think I did, shut down, power cable in, held contro, option, l-shift and power for at least 10 seconds, although nothing happened that indicated that there was a reset). Problem persists. Computer is COOL, fans start up almost immediately. So I installed SMC fan control to monitor my temperature. Upon startup it read at room temp, then spikes up to 200 F and the fans jump up to ~4500 RPM. Now, there is NO WAY that my machine is that hot right when I start it up, it's completely cool to the touch and has been sitting on a marble table in a cool room. Has anybody else been having problems like this?

    thanks for the reply. I ran the AHT by rebooting and holding D. While a ran the test there was no fan noise. The test found no probems. After restart the fans speed up again. Since my last post I've installed the iStat widget. My temperature (F) and fan speed readout is as follows:

    What is the MAXIMUM CPU and GPU ( each individually ) temperature for the Macbook Pro Retina Display before it shuts down as a result of overheating?, an exact number if you would know.
    And what is another app that can control the fans speed other than SMC FanControl and Speed Fan? ( One that ACTUALLY makes the computer obey the RMP you adjust ).
    And finally, does Mountain Lion 10.8.1 consume more power and heat it more than other OS's ?
    I know all about how the Mac itself knows how to manage the fans and all that, I just need the answers to those questions.

    But since his concern appears to be overheating (as is mine), I don't think he wants to slow the fans down.
    I have found that if an older Mac is migrated to a newer Mac, the preference file may need to be either hacked or deleted and recreated to get the fan speed settings to behave properly. Perhaps that's what's going on.

  • 2012 Macbook Pro Retina High Temperatures

    I recently started noticing my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina was feeling warm to the touch on my legs. I installed temperature gauge and was startled by the temperatures I saw.
    Idling the CPU is around 40-45 C but spikes easily to 70-80 with any activity. As an example when Intellij compiles my java code my CPU will jump to 80C
    The SSD temperatures is constantly at 65C.
    I tried reseting the NVRAM with the instructions from Apple website. It didn't make any differences.
    What is even more concerning is the fan speed does not change! It stays right around 2000 RPM no matter what the temperature is.
    Has anyone else had similar experiences with their 2012 Retina? I recently had it at the Apple Store for repair to replace my screen, ghosting issues.

The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • Macbook Pro Retina  Late 2013 CPU temperature issues while gaming (99 celsius) Is this normal ?

    Hello everyone, this is my first time here. I recently purchased a macbook pro retina late 2013 notebook just over a month ago. It seems to be working just fine. I've installed bootcamp and installed windows 7. I use Speccy for my temperature monitor. I've played DayZ Standalone as well as L4D2. I noticed while playing both games on their lowest settings the CPU temperature consistently stays in the 90 degree celsius range often reaching 99 degrees celsius. I am fairly tech saavy and have a decent knowledge of computers.I bought the ThermaPak Heatshift pad in hopes of cooling it down but to no avail as it only does a great job at cooling everything else. This is my first laptop so I treat it like my baby ! haha I was wondering if these temp readings are normal because I know that even reaching 70 celsius can be somewhat damaging. Thank you for your assistance.

    So I just got back from the apple store and wow, what rude service. The guy basically shrugged when I told him "Well, I guess Im stuck with it huh?" after he told me there was no way I could get a refund. He performed a test and told me everything was fine and told me in a very arrogant manner that the test isn't showing the results I told them about as if I was lying....***? He said they can send it away for a few weeks but I don't have any other computer and I just bought this one for school so I can't afford to have it gone for that long. He told me "doesn't your school have a computer lab"? Seriously, how can someone at Apple be this rude? I told him they do but its closed at 7 and I dont live on campus. How could a computer lab replace a personal computer? He basically kept shrugging rudely anytime I tried to find a solution. He didn't even reply with a single word. When I told him I called the call center and they told me that yes it is much too hot and to take it to the store after doing a fix he just chuckled and rolled his eyes. Really?  I spent 1500 dollars on this computer to not even be able to do basic things on it without it overheating and the service is this bad? Well, looks like I won't ever be buying an apple product again even though before this experience I was a huge fan of all their products. I know one customer doesnt make a difference to them but come on...looks like I'm stuck with it and apple couldnt give one care. If having your hands uncomfortably hot after a small amount of time is acceptable then it looks like I'll never be buying another laptop from them. Its a shame I really liked it at first.

  • Average temperature on Macbook Pro Retina?

    I was watching a 720P video via YouTube for about 10 minutes or so and my Macbook Pro Retina reached an average of 160 degrees F (with a 2080RPM speed for the fans). Just out of curiousity what is everyone else getting on their computers?

    Scrub my last post it's not Apple it's Google Drive that's causing the problem, just quit that and everything's fine again

  • MacBook Pro Retina Core Temperature

    Hi,
    I've just bought the new high end Haswell 15" Macbook Pro Retina and have been installing all my stuff.
    I noticed that it was feeling very hot so took a look at iStat which showed the CPU at 12% yet all the cores at 60-80 degrees.
    Is this normal? Seems very hot to me considering I wasn't really straining the system.

    It's on the Sensors menu of iStat...... since posting that I've seen the cpu tempreture get up to 90 but the fans don't seem to automatically speed up, I ended up manually putting them to maximum which cooled it right down very quickly

    It was delivered August 8, 2012. It cost me $3,265.16
    I have since equipped it with accessories like a wireless apple keyboard ($69), wireless mouse ($69), USB super drive ($79), VGA display adapter ($29), Ethernet Adapter ($29) and the excellent sleeve/pouch from Pack & Smooch GmbH (GBP60))
    It's so heavily configured because it’s my main workstation. I additionally bought and installed Parallels 8 so I can run Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine because I have a few things on Windows that I need to be productive. This setup has been a dream machine until a little over a week ago.
    In the one year since I bought it, I have had only 2 issues;
    • A case of display flickering that resulted after a system software update on August 28, 2013
    (Case ID 498560320 - not much help came from Apple Support but fortunately the problem went away a week later after another system software update)
    • A case of battery failure that resulted after a system software update on October 11, 2013
    (Case ID 516534003 - I have gone through all recommendations from Apple support as I will detail below)
    Symptoms after system software update
    • Battery Icon on status bar disabled with a message "No batteries available"
    • Battery not charging
    • LED on the Magsafe power adapter no longer show
    • Keyboard backlights no longer show
    • Notebook fan loud/noisy and permanently at high speed
    • Date and time reset to a date in the past at each restart
    • Notebook starts up the moment the Magsafe adapter is connected without waiting for power button to be pressed
    • An update for "MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2" keeps appearing in Software Update

    (Done - no change in status)

    I make the following deductions solely based on my observations
    • An apple authorized system software update broke the system
    • The nature of the failure is communication related - the battery charging circuit and related systems are not getting the necessary instructions to function as they should (It's a known fact that rechargeable batteries do NOT die instantaneously, the total hours they run on full charge will gradually reduce over time as they degrade on use)
    • It’s possible the update is not being applied correctly because the item “MacBook Pro Retina Display SMC Update 1.2” is still in Software update after subsequent attempts to apply it
    • The high fan speed is nothing to do with high temperature or high processor load, according to the Activity Monitor utility the highest CPU utilization 1.9 – 4.7% is by kernel_task (PID 0) followed by activitymonitord at 1.8 – 2.2% (PID 481)
    • The symptoms match what an SMC reset should resolve according to Apple documentation
    • This is a known problem within Apple based on the documentation provided and the numerous similar cases reported online
    Summary;
    The system is running OS X 10.8.5
    I have provided this detailed documentation in the hope that someone who understands this system can say exactly what is going on. It's meant to be a dream machine but now you can hear the fan from across a large room, the battery doesn't charge and is in fact not recognized so I lose data if the Magsafe adapter gets unplugged, and I have to reset the system date each time I restart the notebook.
    I've used this notebook with utmost care for a little more than a year, this investment of over $3,500 could have bought 3 high end notebooks from DELL or HP but I chose Apple.
    I have suffered untold loss in productivity in the last 10 days since this issue occurred, I respectfully request Apple to fix my notebook.

    I'm using macbook pro retina 13inch 2013 late version.
    my macbook has NO external graphic card, just iris graphic.
    when i was playing diablo3 or watching movie by using bypass ip address, my cpu temperature was maintained 90~100 celcius degrees.
    And at the same time, my cooling fan was maintained 5800~6000 rpm.
    There are two questions.
    One, is my macbook temperature too high or normal level ?
    Two, i know that 6200rpm is maximum speed of cooling fan. Why  did fan run 5800~6000rpm, not maximum?

    When processor intensive activities are taking place, temperature may reach the maximum level.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" fan very loud/overheats when playing full screen video/games

    Just purchased a MacBook Pro Retina, refurbished (because why not - the same product for a cheaper price) around a month ago. It's the 13 inch and is the model before the most recent one came out (4GB of RAM instead of 8GB - late 2013). From the very first day, playing a full-screen video on any site (be it YouTube, Facebook, etc) just makes the fan much louder than usual (so loud that you can almost hear it more over the video itself). Thought it may have been just a thing with Flash Player being buggy, but the problem has persisted for a while now. I'm not even pushing the CPU to any limits - literally playing a full-screen video on Facebook (not even in HD) makes the fan go crazy.
    Just last night I tried installing Borderlands 2 and it was the same thing - FPS rate was fine, no lag, just the fan was so loud that I actually got scared for my computer and turned it off. After closing the app and checking out the fan temperature, it was at 91c.
    Never happens when browsing/surfing or doing my usual work.
    Should I go give it back to Apple? The thing is I start university in less than a week (and hence will be traveling), so not sure if I can afford to give my laptop in to them for a long period of time (I know it should be free though since mine is a refurb item). May it just be an issue that is quickly repairable or is this worse?

  • Macbook pro retina hates FCPX

    Hi Guys,
    I run FCPX on my 2.3 ghz - 8 gig ram - macbook pro retina display laptop. I mostly use hero 3 1080p footage when editing. I must say I am seriously disapointed with the laptops performance. Doing anything feels really, really, really, laggy. Even using the skim tool and dragging media in the timeline feels laggy. Its just a pain to use.  When I render or transcode media, the laptop fans spool to max and it gets really hot. It literally cooks itself. I downloaded a sensor app which provides CPU core temperatures. (and yes I downloaded a paid version which actually works) Funny thing was only one of the cores was getting to like 100 degrees celcius. Isnt this getting a little hot??? Also, I doubt the hyperthreading technology works since like 1 or 2 cores was doing all the number crunching for the rendering and trancoding of media. Why isnt FCPX running on nearly all the cores??? After speaking to apple support they came back to me saying that its normal for the mac to cook while rendering. So, since apple cant help me, is there anyone else that seems to have the same issue, or is it just me. Please, if anyone has any ideas/solutions on how to aid my problem I would be very thankful. I really like the program just cant get anything done. Cheers in advance. 

    I have been editing HD video (AVCHD, HDV, and h. 264)  on my Macbook Pro with Retina Display for about nine months now.  I have the 2.7 GHz Quad core procesor, 16 GB of RAM and a 768 Flash Drive, but I place my final cut projects and events on an external Western Digital 6TB Raid 0 Thunderbolt HD. I monitor the temperatures of my MBPR using iStat Menus. During rendering I typically see temperatures of 100 C and my fans move to their maximum 5500 rpm.   I have rendered one hour long projects and the temperature has remained between 90-105 C. during this entire time.  The Intel Quad Core processor has a thermal shutdown of 105C. but I have never had a thermal shutdown, nor have I seen any slowing of the rendering during several hours of rendering.
    I don't have any problems in playing back AVCHD or h.264 encoded footage such as that captured by my Canon 5D Mark II.  I rarely optimize the footage to Apple Pro Res when editing and only do so if I am using large numbers of effects, filters, etc. My experience with my MBPR and FCP X have been excellent.  I doubt I have been much help to you, but your temperatures during rendering are normal, and your lagging is puzzling to me.
