15" 2011 Macbook Pro AirPort Problem

HI, I don't know if this is just me or a fault with the lines, but I recently purchased a 15" macbook pro and the wifi every now and again decides to cut out. I have to turn airport on and off again to get it to work.
I do software updates and there was an airport update.. but the problem percists.

  • 2011 Macbook Pro Airport card Issues

    Hi guys,
I have been having a problem with my 15" 2011 Macbook Pro. Over the last week my wifi has been malfunctioning. I will be able to succesfully connect to my WiFi for about 30 minutes, but then the signal drops. When I click on the connection reticule on the top right it says my WiFi is on, but that no hotspots can be detected. There are at least half a dozen hotspots near me.
After this, if I turn off the WiFi it will not turn back on. I have to restart my Macbook to regain connectivity. This has not coincided with any recent installations of hardware or software.
If anyone has solutions I would be very grateful. I have tried resetting my PRAM. I am about 2 months out of warranty. So, if this does require service I would appreciate any estimates on the cost.
    Thank you!
    Ryan

    Your router is likely fine.
You should first update the Airport firmware for it, simply run the Airport and Software update.
    See this
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3802
And then go to your System Preferences > Network > Advanced > TCP/IP and for IPv6 turn : OFF
Reboot and see how that goes.
When you connect to the router it gives you a lease on a IP address, if your computer's time and date are off this could make the lease expire and you connect and then get disconnected. So check that, see if it holds.
    Reset your SMC and NVRAM/PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
Go to your <home> /Library/Preferences and drag the
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
file to the desktop and reboot, it will be rebuilt, hit your Sytem Preferences and reset them.
drag the useless file on the desktop to the trash.

  • Macbook Pro Airport problem

I have a early 2008 Macbook Pro, before I had installed the 10.5.5 update, my connection has been fine. However, after the install, my connection has been really slow. I still have 5 full bars, but nothing is loading. As I move closer to my router, it appears to be fine. I live on two floors with the router on the top floor. My iMac (first gen-intel core) is running fine with tiger. Any suggestions?

I have been having problems since the update as well. But my symptoms are every now and then my wireless adapter on the macbook pro will turn off. Theres an option to turn it back on but it doesn't do anything. The only way to resolve the issue is to restart the laptop but when this happens every five minutes or even less, its a pain. I called Apple about it and got no help at all, just a bunch of guys reading out of a book. Later a few days there was an update for this and it was described as being able to fix this problem. I installed it using system update and it seemed to work for about a day but now it's doing it again.

  • Good 500 GB SATA II SDD for Early 2011 Macbook Pro?

    Hi everyone,
I have been doing quite some intensive googling on this but I can't really find what I'm looking for so I wanted to ask my fellow MBP early 2011 users I upgraded my HDD last year with Samsung 830 SDD with 256GB and the difference to the stockdrive (I have the MBP 8.2) was incredible. Now I'm at the point where I'd like to ditch the stock drive from my optical bay (I removed the super drive and installed a data doubler frame) entirely and add a larger second SSD (500GB range).
However, I have been seeing alot of comments online where specifically the MBP8.2 has a lot of stability issues with SATA III (6bg/s) drives in the optical bay, even if the link speed is supported through the system report and that the safest way would be to opt for an older SATA II drive.
I can't swap my drives because the Samsung 830 also is SATA III, so it wouldn't work in the optibay.
I searched wide and far and I can only find this model that is still sold today and has the size I'm looking for: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDEX3G480/ which is only sold in the US, as I'm located in HK, I'm looking for a more mainstream brand if possible which is also available here.
So here is my question to the community, you guys ever upgrade an MBP8.2 to a 500GB SSD in the optibay recently and which drive model did you have good experience with?
I know its a long shot, but thanks a lot in advance to everyone regardless
    Best,
    //Simon

    Hi LowLuster,
    Thanks but:
    1. I can't swap my drives since I already have an SATA III SSD in the main bay, so it doesn't matter where it put the new second SDD there will be an SSD in the opti bay
    2. Yes in general SATA III drives should be backwards compatible but as I stated the MBP 2011 early edition (15 & 17" models only) seems to have issues with 6gb/s drives in the opti bay as reported here:
"#2 – For those with a MacBook Pro 15″ or 17″ model that has SATA 3.0 6Gb/s link capability reported, it is very important to note that this EFI update does not appear to have resolved reliability of using a 6Gb/s drive in the optical bay. If you have a 6Gb/s optical drive bay connection and are using a product like our Data Doubler, we still recommend only using a SATA 2.0 3Gb/s drive in that bay. MacBook Pro 13″ owners who find 6Gb/s links in their optical bay are not experiencing issues with 6Gb/s drives and this update doesn’t affect that usage."

Do Not post stuff about how Airplay doesnt work, because i dont have Apple TV and dont need to hear about it.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

You really have to mess with the resoluton, espescially the refresh rate, as it varies from projector to projector, monitor to monitor. Even within the same brand! Because so many manufacturers are trying so many different things to become the next cool kid on the block, and the way the formats are being configured that's now part of the game.
That's why so many professionally produced corporate shows hire a dedicated projectionist for the video presentations. Too many bugs in the honey.
Refresh & sesolution are the first things to look at.
Just so you know that colors in PowerPoint PC, and PowerPoint Mac, don't exactly match... go figure.
I forgot to mention another thing, sometimes it's the projector that needs to be tweaked.

  • Having hard drive problems with 2011 macbook pro

    Hey all,
I am having some hard drive issues with a 2011 Macbook Pro running OS X Mavericks.
How it happened: I was browsing the web when suddenly I got the spinny-wheel-of-death.  The spinny wheel of death stuck around for much longer than usual, and eventually my computer wouldn't even respond to mouse input (the mouse wouldn't move).  Nothing worked, so I did a hard reset of my computer.  When I rebooted the machine, it took me into "Recovery Disk Mode".
Here are the diagnostics that I've done: In "Recovery Disk Mode", I have the option to use the Disk Utility, which I have done.  My main volume, called "Macintosh HD" is grayed out - and not mountable.  When I run "first aid" on it, it is not able to verify the disk because of an "Invalid B-tree node size".  It then tells me to repair the disk.  I have tried repairing the disk, but it fails - and that is not entirely unexpected because all of the forum posts that I have read up until now say that Disk Utility cannot repair this specific type of error.
3rd party software I have tried: Based on the forum posts that I have read, Disk Warrior is especially capable at fixing this kind of error, so I went to my local computer shop, purchased the software, and booted into it.  Disk Warrior did not recognize my drive, and did not even show it in the list of available options.
Other things I have tried: I purchased a Seagate external drive, and I tried to use Disk Utility to copy the contents from my MBP's hard drive over to the external drive, but when I do so, "Disk Utility" tells me that "Recovery partition restores can only be done on GPT partition maps."  I have also had it give me another error message where it says it "cannot verify source - error 254".
Additionally, I have seen around the internet that many people try using "fsck" to fix this issue, but I haven't been able to find a good explanation of the proper steps when using "fsck", nor how to specify to the "fsck" program that I want it to fix my "Macintosh HD" volume.  I've opened up the terminal, and gone into the "/dev/" folder, but I don't know which item in that folder, or any other folder, would properly lead down the path to my "Macintosh HD" volume.  Also, the man pages seem to be of little help here.
One option I would like to try, but I have not been able to, is to try putting my MBP into Target Disk Mode, and see if my desktop machine (a Dell) can see it.  The problem here is that my Dell only has USB ports - no Firewire, and obviously no Thunderbolt ports.  I would need to find a way to plug my MBP into my Dell while it is in Target Disk Mode, but from what I can tell, that's impossible if I don't have a Firewire or Thunderbolt port on my Dell.
So, now having explained everything I have tried, can y'all give me any advice on how I can recover my drive without completely repartitioning it?  Although most of my important data and files are located on cloud services, there are definitely some files on the drive that I don't have backed up, and I would like to recover the drive without losing those files.  What suggestions can you give me?  Thanks!

    Yes, BUT...
... there are many problems that are really easy to eliminate by replacing the Hard drive, including ones that have nothing to do with actual Drive Hardware failure. These include corrupted install of Mac OS X, its EFI partition, clobbered partition tables, or the appearance of Bad Blocks in a critical area.
Any of these problems can sometimes be eliminated by re-initializing the entire drive and writing Zeroes, and re-installing from scratch. The trouble is, this process takes hours to complete, and is not guaranteed to be successful -- you may still need a new drive after all that effort.
I learned from my Plumber that consumers have no appetite for solutions that might work, and detest return visits for any related problems whatsoever. You or your friend may have had your drive replaced, not because it actually failed, but because the situation was troublesome, and the provider thought you would not tolerate anything less than a crisp, complete fix on the first attempt. And based on the cost of technician time, it may have even been cheaper that way.

  • Flickering problem with 2011 macbook pro unibody

I have a 17" 2011 Macbook Pro Unibody and when I connect the computer to the TV via Mini Display Port (HDMI), the TV is either not receiving any signal, or screen is flickering, however, my other 13" 2010 Macbook Pro Unibody has no problem when connected to the TV.  Does anyone know the reason to the problem?

I had the same problem, and I cant say which fixed it, but i deleted the plist file then reset the pram and it worked
    Quit System Preferences and delete...
    Users/yourname/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
and to reset the pram reset the puter and before the chime hold alt+command+p+r and keep holding until you hear the chime a second time...
    really hope this helps

Assuming this means the TV was not detected in any of these versions, this would not be a Snow Leopard installation or setup issue. I think that is what sig is trying to tell you.
If this is true, you might want to post in the MacBook forums to see if anyone has a similar issue. It would be a good idea to post the model number of your Toshiba if you do so, as this might be relevant. Otherwise, it sounds like the problem is in the TV, since the MacBook works with other displays.

As Shootist pointed out, the system uses more power.
However, initially it will reindex the hard drive for spotlight, which will slow things down temporarily.
It also must rebuild caches that eventually will speed things up.
If it has completed indexing the hard drive (no dot pulsing in the spyglass), then there might be something wrong.
Start by booting into the Recovery HD (a partition created with Lion that has Disk Utility and reinstallation options) by holding down cmd-r when you restart. You can let go when the gray screen appears.
When it boots, select Disk Utility and Repair the drive.
If that doesn't speed things up, try re-installing the OS from the same Recovery HD. It won't delete any of your files, but it has helped some people whose Macs ran slow after installing Lion.
Also, how much memory do you have? Lion needs RAM so maxing your Mac out might also help.

Thanks, Bob. I've seen this suggested before. However, I'm at a friend's place (cat-sitting). He owns an older MacBook (almost positive) and he streams audio without Airfoil. All he uses is AirPort Express. He told me to simply click alt-option and the volume icon and a menu drops down, and I select "AirPort Express". But it never appears. All the menu offers is this:
    "AirPort Express" isn't an option.
Why is that? Is there something fundamental I'm not doing?

  • Problems with early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" 2.7 GHz / OWC Mercury Extreme Pro

*Has anyone else experienced issues getting their OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD working in the early 2011 MacBook Pros?*
I am having difficulties getting OS X installed on the new OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240 GB. When I install the SSD in place of the factory HDD and boot from the 10.6.6 reinstallation DVD the SSD is not visible to the installation program. If I quit the 10.6.6 installer and run Disk Utility (from the 10.6.6 installation DVD) the SSD is not visible. If I quit Disk Utility and run System Profiler (from the 10.6.6. installation DVD) the drive is visible and firmware and serial numbers are displayed. So like the drive is visible to OS X but the installer / Disk Utility can not see it.
If I put the SSD in an external USB enclosure it is visible - I can format the drive and copy files to it.
I also tried installing the SSD in place of the factory HDD, putting the HDD in a USB enclosure, booting from the OS X installation on the HDD and running the OS X installer from the 10.6.6 DVD. I was able to select the SSD as the target for the installation and the initial file copy was OK, but when the laptop restarted during the installation the SSD would not boot. The grey folder icon with the flashing question mark was displayed instead. Holding down Option while booting only gave me the option to boot from the DVD.
I also tried resetting the NVRAM and SMC of the MacBook Pro - this did not resolve the issue.
I spoke to OWC support who said they did not know of any compatibility issues with the new MacBook Pros and suggested I request a replacement.
The firmware version of the SSD is 350a13f0

This is my exact problem. I have had 2 of these drives so far and both of them have had the same problem with installation internally. The first one I was able to get operational using the method you described, ie: put the OWC SSD in an external case (FW800 was my choice) and install it there. But I encountered the sleep issues, so I sent it back for a replacement.
The second drive I was finally able to install using the second method, but now the computer regularly locks up. So I'm going to call again and hopefully the third try will work.
Just to clarify. The first drive had sleep issues, but had the older firmware. The second drive had the newer firmware (360 I think it is) and didn't have the sleep issues, but locks up while running.
I'm so irritated on how many hours I've spent on this issue. And their support department, though very nice, wasn't helpful at all. It's as if they never heard of this problem.

my macbook pro airport won't turn on! What would be the problem?
I've tried to turn the airport on and it says my airport card is not installed...
it has always worked till today... bot from now on nothing seem to help the airport work...
    Please help me!
    Thanks

You could try deleting the airpot from the sidebar of system preferences/network. To do this,
    1)  export the preferences for your airport to your desktop by pressing the gear next to the plus and minus sign above the lock.
    2) Delete your airport from the sidebar using the minus sign while the airport is selected.
    3)  After deleting the airport, apply the changes and then press the plus sign to create a new airport.
    4)  Then import the preferences back in and apply the changes again.
This may bring your airport back.  It worked for me.  Alternatively, people have been having success with changing the location of the airport.
    Good Luck.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro 15 model freezing problems

I've been experiencing problems with my 2011 MacBook Pro 15 model with it freezing on me all the time.  I have read around and came to a conclusion that it is a logic board problem on the logic board that supports 3 GBs on the superdrive bay.  Have any of you had this problem? What did you do to get the problem resolved? I'm going to my local Apple store to try to get this fixed (With the current logic board that supports 6 GBs on the superdrive bay) or get a replacement laptop. Thanks for your input!

You are doing the right thing.
Take it to the Apple Store . Let them fix it for you.
Nobody here can help you with hardware problems.
    Best.
