15" Aluminum PMU?

hi,
i have a friend with a 15" G4 AlPB; she is experiencing stuff that i think is PMU related, including:
1. suddenly going to sleep while she is working. hitting a key on the kbd wakes it up again almost always.
2. not booting at all when the power adaptor is plugged in but battery is not in place.
i was able to get around (2) by holding down the power key for 5+ seconds (PMU reset), e.g. then i could get her machine to boot from AC power, but i had to perform this reset again before i could get the machine to boot a second (or third) time from just the power adaptor.
the battery charges fine, and there doesn't seem to be an issue with the PRAM (no date/time issues, and we have tried a few resets of that too).
so - is there a separate PMU battery or board in this model? are parts available? looking around on the interweb all i see is PMU units for TiPB's and below.
cheers.

Search recent system logs (Applications>Utility>Console) for the line with the phrase "ApplePMU::PMU forced shutdown". If you see that, there is probably some sort of electrical problem. Make sure all your connections from plug to your computer are sound - (best to have some sort of surge protector or UPS between the wall and your computer).
Keep a log (better still, make print outs of the portions of the system log where it shows up), and, if it persists bring it to apple for checking out. I had the same problem on my mini and they replaced a logic board for me.
Oh yeah - make sure all important stuff is backed up.

Concerning: VGA monitors using an Aluminum Powerbook G4 PowerPC 2004 15"-screen 1.5Ghz
The DVI (converted to VGA) video output stopped working on this computer after 9 years of service. This raises question 1:
Is there any way of fixing this? I've tried the usual: triple checked all vga cables & devices through trial & error. Bought a new DVI-VGA adapter. Reset PRAM, PMU, etc. Nothing works. Something is probably damaged, because my KVM switch was not working unless I hot-reseated the vga cable into it, leading to this DVI port, and that is pretty rough stuff.
    Question 2 (related):
This dovetails into this: Can I drive a VGA monitor with the s-video output port on this computer. It would take an s-video (male)-to-15-pin-VGA adapter. Has anyone does this? So far, I haven't even found the adapter mentioned anywhere.
    Thanks for reading this.

Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.
If it will help anyone else reading this thread, C2G (née Cables to Go) has some interesting ideas for still getting external video out of this computer:
    -USB-to-VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/30545
-Convert s-video or composite video signals to high resolution VGA
    http://www.cablestogo.com/product/40971
The price range is $75-$85, which doesn't make horse sense to me for such an old computer -- which has a lot of life in it anyway, because its own 15" monitor is not chopped liver.

  • Apple Mini-DVI to Video Adapter doesn't fit my aluminum iMac

I previously had a 17" white iMac (pre-Intel) machine, and about 6 months ago I bought the mini-DVI to video adapter so I could connect it to my television. Worked like a charm. But I recently bought a new aluminum iMac, and the adaptor doesn't fit into the mini-DVI port in the back of the machine. It appears the adaptor and port are both male ends.
Has the port changed on the aluminum iMacs? The product description for the adaptor on Apple's website says it works with iMac (Intel Core Duo). Isn't the aluminum iMac an Intel Core Duo? I can't figure out why it doesn't fit and which cable I'm supposed to be using instead.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Aluminum Apple Remote not working well with Keynote '09 v.5.0.4

I have an i7 17" MBP and I purchased the aluminum remote to go with it. I do training/presentations for a living and generally halfway through various presentations, the remote will stop controlling them. Sometimes if I restart Keynote it will work again. Sometimes I have to reboot the computer. Other times it just doesn't work at all.
I can use it with my 2007 G4 17" MBP, but I haven't used it enough to see if it develops the same issues as the i7.
I've gone to Preferences > Security > General and tried to pair the remote with the laptop, but holding down the Menu and Next keys at the same time for a few seconds...or minutes... does not bring up the "paired" graphic. I've tried the Menu button and every other key, just to be sure, with the same lack of result.
What the hey? (And, no, "Disable remote control infrared receiver" is not selected.)

I have the white remote stop working on my new 15"MBP occasionally too. Same as you described in the post, it happens pretty randomly. I can get it back to work doing a unpair/pair under system preference panel though. It ***** but better than restarting the computer like you did, try that next time, just takes seconds...
after reading your post I guess I'll give up on trying to buy a aluminum remote. Logitech R400 looks very promising, if you give presentation all the time it might worth the investment.
    cheers!

  • New aluminum Macbook and S-Video

    New aluminum Macbook and S-Video
It have come to the conclusion that the new MacBook's and MacBook Pro's can not output to S-video. I have tired the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI and then the Apple DVI to Video but no luck, the two do not connect as the Mini DisplayPort to DVI is missing 4 pin holes. I have tired Mini DisplayPort to VGA and then a VGA to s-video adapter but no luck, the MacBook did not even see a second display.
Is there any hope to achieve my goal? I need s-video out for work and will have to exchange the computer for a Black MacBook if the new computer can not output to s-video.
    Any thoughts?

*Mini Review - PC to Video EZ*
    _*It works!*_
    !http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3236/29803095101fb261f66ao.jpg!
I, and many others, have been looking for a way to output video (composite and s-video) from the NEW Macbooks and MacBook Pro's sporting the Mini DisplayPort since Apple as yet to release such adapter. I use my computer to output video (s-video) for digital slide shows and presentations. If our new aluminum MacBook could not meet this requirement back to the store it would go.
While searching the web for a adapter, converter or whatever could help get video out of the new MacBook I quickly learned ($10 later) that a simple VGA to s-video cable would not work.
    *NO GOOD!*
I soon came across the PC to Video EZ. It is sold at several online retailers but I finaly decided to buy it from NewEgg.com (links at bottom of post). NewEgg is retailer I knew I could trust and get fast shipping from. I ordered the converter box on Friday and it arrived today (Monday) with standard shipping!
Bottom line, the PC to Video EZ from GrandTec outputs video (both composite and s-video) at equal quality to Apple's own video adapters used on previous (pre-DisplayPort) computers. I, owning a MacBook Pro with DVI to video adapter, could not tell the difference.
The device itself is small. It is nothing you would complain about carrying around and it gets the job done.

The back of the unit has two VGA ports, one in and one out. You can use the VGA out port as a pass through so you can still have your computer connected to a VGA monitor while outputting to video. A feature I will never use but it is still nice to have, especially for desktops.
Also on the back is the video ("yellow" composite) and s-video out.

On the right side of the unit you will find a place to plug in the power adapter. Good news, its powered by USB. Bad news, the thing needs to be powered at all... More bad news, the unit does not use a standard USB cable. You better not loose the one that comes in the box! At least there are no power bricks to lug around and a simple USB to wall power adapter (like the one used with iPod or the iPhone) should also power the device. My testing showed that power is required.

I have a Power Mac G4 double mirrored model and everytime I shut it off it will not go on when I hit the power on/off button again. However, if I unplug and plug in the power cord it boots fine and everything is OK. The PMU and logic board have been reset. Sometimes my Mac goes on just by pressing the power on button but most times I have to pull the power cord and put it back in. Any ideas or help out there for this? Could it be a failing power supply? Apple Care says that this model is obsolete so there is no help from there. John
    <E-mail Edited by Host>

    Hi John,
That's often a sign of a bsad Capacitor in the Power Supply, but...
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

  • Apple Aluminum Keyboard slow responding after reboot

I have Leopard installed on my external firewire drive, and 10.4.1 installed on my PowerBook. Whenever I boot from one to the other I get a very slow response from my new Apple Aluminum Keyboard and my USB trackball. I have the trackball connected to the keyboard's USB port and the keyboard is plugged directly into the PowerBook. When I boot into either system it takes a good five minutes before the keyboard and trackball respond. In the meantime I have to use the keyboard on the PowerBook and the trackpad to login, etc... I also have USB Overdrive installed on both systems, but this problem developed before I installed USB Overdrive in Leopard. Any clues?

Does this new keyboard pair fine with the other computer?
I can only think of two other things given the troubleshooting that has been done so far.
This may be an OS issue (Reinstall the Mac OS) or something in or around your setup is generating interference: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365 (doubtful as you said you used another computer and it was fine in the same area).
If you have already contacted AppleCare and the replacement keyboard did not resolve the issue you might want to give them a call back to follow-up so they can investigate the issue further.

Yes, you can use the 85 watt adaptor. You cannot use the new adaptors because your computer is not equipped with the proper MagSafe connector. But you can use the older MBP adaptors as well as a 60 watt replacement adaptor. All can be found at Apple's Online Store.

  • Can I upgrade my 2.4 iMac's HD (1st Aluminum gen) to a 1TB?

    Hello,
I have a 20" 2.4GHz iMac (first generation of the Aluminum series) with a pre-installed 320GB hard disk. I'd like to upgrade it to a 1TB. Is that possible? Would my machine run a 1TB or is my maximum a 500GB?
I need to purchase the Hard disk separately because it is not available in my country. So what exactly are the recommended specs and brands that will be fully compatible with my iMac? And what is the maximum size I can go for?
    Thank you,
    Carol

You can go for 1.5TB if you really wanted to (kind of grey, since some PC's cant support 1.5tb properly). Pretty much any SATA 3.5 inch hard drive will work. The ones you want would be SATA or SATAII or SATA2 or SATA 3.0 (which are all the same, most companies will just call it a SATA drive. the 2/II just represents the generation of SATA which reads at 3gbps or something like that, hence the 3.0, but you dont have to worry about it, just get a SATA and it will work).
For the 1TB lineup, I chose the Samsung Spinpoint series because it had the fastest read times compared to the rest of drives from seagate etc ect. Just make sure the hard drive is initialized before you go and install it into your imac. I did this by initializing it from my PC before sticking it in. Im not sure if you can initialize the harddrive while installing OS X, so i didnt take that chance. (Taking it apart waskind of a hassle).
It reads everything fine at 1TB, you can get a OEM harddrive (without any cables or mounting brackets) because everything you need, you can just take from your harddrive already in there. Look online for step by steps of how to open the aluminum imac. youll need non-magnetized screwdrivers and a bunch of suctioncups to remove the plexiglassish cover.
I would personally recommend the Samsung Spinpoints, i have 4 of them in 3 of my computers and none of them arrived dead or are having any defects. They go for about 120-150$ canadian, or about 70-130$ american. Ill admit ignorance, and say i dont know what currency Egypt uses. :P
Remember though that theres only space for 1 3.5 inch desktop hard drive in there.

I have a MacBook 5,1 (13.3" aluminum from 2007 or 2008). Automatic updates will only let me get to OSX 10.5.8.  Can I upgrade to Snow Leopard, Lion 10.6 or even 10.6.8?  Also, will I have any issues with my iPhone if it's updated to iOS 7.1?

The 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD is in the Apple online store. You can get it for $19.99. You will need to be running 10.6.8 to access the App Store to order Lion or Mountain Lion. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    System Requirements for 10.6:
Mac computer with an Intel processor
    1GB of memory
    5GB of available disk space
    DVD drive for installation
Some features require a compatible internet service provider: fees may apply.
You can upgrade direct from 10.6.8 to 10.8 Mountain Lion without going through 10.7 Lion with the Late 2008 model 5,1 Aluminum Unibody. The Model 5,1 will probably run 10.9 Mavricks when it comes out.
10.8 Mountain Lion is a download from the App Store, the price is $19.99.
Mountain Lion will require at least 2gb of RAM but really needs 4gb to run smoothly.
As for third party programs see this list for compatibility with 10.8 http://roaringapps.com/apps:table
Also Mountain Lion doesn't run any Power PC programs. To see if you have any Power PC programs go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up select Applications under Software. Then look under Kind to see if any of your applications are listed as Power PC. Universal and Intel will run under Mountain Lion.
Before Mac switched to Intel processors in 2006 they used Power PC processors from 1994 to 2005. Power PC 601 through 604, G3, G4 and G5. Applications written for the Power PC processors need the application called Rosetta to run on Intel processors. This was part of the Operating System in 10.4 and 10.5 but was an optional install in 10.6. With 10.7 Lion Apple dropped all support for Power PC applications.

  • Wireless Aluminum Keyboard Troubleshooting

If you're having issues with your Apple Wireless (Aluminum) Keyboard disconnecting, there are a few things you can try.
First, check your wireless network configuration to see if you can avoid interference. See this post in another topic:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=5783742#5783742
Although I did have success with tweaking my wifi setup, my keyboard disconnect problem returned again a couple of weeks ago. I had recently upgraded to Leopard (10.5.1) which may have contributed - although I had been using wired ethernet, and switched back to wifi around the same time as my Leopard upgrade.
Like others have posted, I also noticed the bluetooth daemon log errors in my system log. To look for them, you can open console.app, and search for "blued" in the system.log and also its archive history. Here's an example:
    +Jan 25 09:17:22 Macintosh-2 kernel[0]: IOBluetoothHCIRequest::Create [0x55da000] Request OpCode 0000 Generated by: blued (47) status: 0 timeout 1000. has a too small timeout, a reasonable value would be 5000 (5 seconds)+
Here are some other things to try. You should only try one at a time - so that you can tell which change fixed your problem.
    1. In the Bluetooth System Preferences panel, unpair your keyboard, and re-pair it again
    2. Also in the Bluetooth System Preferences panel, add the keyboard to your favorites. To do this in Leopard: select the keyboard in the bluetooth devices list. Click on the tasks cog at the foot of that pane (just beside the plus and minus). Select "Show more info". Select "Add To Favorites".
    3. Reset the bluetooth preferences by moving system preference files. Warning: only try this if you are comfortable using the OS X terminal!! :
    sudo mv /var/root/Library/Preferences/blued.plist /var/root/Library/Preferences/blued.plist.old
    sudo mv /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist /var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.old
(you will need to enter your password at least once, and then will need to restart your machine).
Keep a log of all the things you've tried. If none of these work, its probably time to call AppleCare. If you have one of the new Apple (Aluminum) Wireless Keyboards, it is still covered by warranty at this point.

It sounds like the bluetooth in both of your keyboards has simply died. If it's still under warranty (if it has one), take it to the apple store and show them. They may give you a new one. For future reference, the new wired USB keyboard is now exactly the same as the wireless (except that it has a wire), and you won't face any bluetooth issues like that. You can get the new wired keyboard here:

Also, if you're willing to spend a bit more money, Macworld rated the Logitech DiNovo Edge Keyboard very highly. Here's a link to that:

    Hope this helps.

  • Aluminum Keyboard Sometimes Not Recognized By USB Port

I have an Aluminum wired keyboard that occasionally isn't detected by my Macbook in both Windows XP (Boot Camp) and Leopard. This is an exchanged one because the first one also behaved this way. I'm not using the extension cable. I have a USB wireless mouse plugged into one of the keyboard's USB ports and a flash drive. When the keyboard isn't detected, the mouse doesn't work (no lights on the receiver, can't connect), but the flash drive gets recognized. I've also had the keyboard not be detected without the flash drive so I know that it isn't the issue.
When it isn't detected I have to disconnect and reconnect the keyboard multiple times until it randomly starts working. Once it works, it doesn't stop working, though after going to sleep it occasionally disconnects itself on startup. All the function keys work properly and there's no updates available...is there anything I can do about this?

I've seen the very same problem. In my case I have a wired Mighty Mouse attached to one of the USB ports on the aluminum keyboard. Every time I plug it in -- not recognized first time. Second time -- success. Highly annoying.
Unfortunately I don't have a solution for the problem.

  • My aluminum remote for Apple TV no longer seems to connect to the Apple TV receiver; I've changed the battery, but w/o success

My aluminum remote does not appear to connect with the Apple TV receiver; I've changed the battery.  I can turn on the Apple TV and the opening screen comes up, but the remote doesn't seem to connect...no cursor or movement on the Apple TV screen occurs.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Your Apple TV may have become paired with another remote. Hold the remote close to and pointed at the Apple TV, hold down the menu and Rewind buttons together for 6 seconds or until you see a broken chain icon on screen.
