15-inch Mid-2010 memory upgrade issues
Hi,
I have a 15-inch mid-2010 MBP running Mountain Lion, that I upgraded from 4 to 8 Gb of memory in Sept. 2012. The memory i purchased was a 2x4 gb set of Corsair Value rated at 1333 MHz. The upgrade went smooth, and i did not have any problems for a few months.
Then late in december or early in january, I had a few Kernel Panics. I didn't think too much of it, as I was busy with exams, and thought it might be a software issue or something, maybe related to VMware Fusion. The KP's started getting a bit more frequent, and suddenly one day the machine wouldn't boot at all, it just KP's at the Apple logo and then goes in a loop. I now suspected a memory problem, as my experience tells me that this is a usual cause of KP's.
I started fiddling with the memory sticks, and determined that one of the blocks would boot, so i went to the place i bought the set and talked to them. They agreed that the one block was probably faulty, and replaced my memory with a 2x4 Gb set of Corsair Mac Memory. This is 1066 MHz CL7, and should be compatible with MB,MBP and iMac, according to the packaging. The problem is that the machine will not boot with this memory either. It just goes for the same loop and KP's at the Apple logo. I can't even get this to boot with one stick in the machine, so it's arguably worse.
The machine works well with the original memory, It's been a rock solid main machine with 4Gb of ram for about a month now.
I tried PRAM and SMC reset to no avail. I tried booting into boot camp with the new memory, but it just never seems to load Windows. This also works with the old memory.
I'm a bit lost as to what i should try next. I suspect it's a problem with the Logic Board, i just don't see how, seeing as it used to work with 8 Gb, and that it still works with 4 Gb.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
So, i've played around with things a bit more. 4 gigs of ram is still rock solid. I've had the memory in a friends computer, an HP PC, where it works just fine.
Also, the computer starts up fine in fail safe mode if i hold down shift during boot, but that's no way to live.
I should probably have mentioned in my first post that I have replaced my optical drive with a 64 gb SSD that i boot OS X from. Since Windows does not start up either, and i've had that part of the setup for about two years, I wouldn't think that is the problem.
The computer has been running 15 passes of Rember this night, and was still running when i got up, so it's clearly not entirely broken.
Any suggestions?

Mac Book Pro 17-inch Mid-2010 memory compatibility
I have a Mac Book Pro 17-inch, 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 with 8GB 1066 MHz DD3 RAM. The RAM consists of two 4GB modules. I was just wondering if I can upgrade the RAM by putting DDR3 PC3-12800 1600MHz SO-DIMM PC laptop memory module RAM. Will it work?
Buying RAM off eBay is probally the worst thing you can do.
Not only that, it's some off name brand RAM made for PC's, so it's likely to cause issues or fail in the Mac, which the seller might not respond for a exchange or refund.
Inexpensive RAM is usually lower quality and more prone to not working but might so it's pawned off to third party resellers to appeal to the cheap crowd willing to work more to get their machines running.
Opening up the MacBook Pro is delicate work with fine screws that need to go back into each exact hole they came out of. The more you have to open it, the more potential damage can occur that is not covered by AppleCare or warranty.
If you want perfect RAM the first time, without having to keep trying over and over which costs you more money and headaches, buy the RAM directly from the manufactor here
http://www.crucial.com/mac/
When your looking at the RAM approved and tested to work for your machine, you can opt to spend more for the higher speed RAM however it will only work as fast as your BUS speed (aka: "Mhz") of the machine.
Benefit of the faster RAM is it will max the bus speed, whereas the matched speed spec-ed RAM can be a bit slower than the bus speed.
If your not into serious performance of the machine, then just opt for the most used spec-ed RAM speed. -
MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 using Mac OS X 10.8 Keyboard Issues.
Good day ASC,
I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2010 upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8. It now has keyboard issues. Keys F4, 4, r, f, v, caps lock, space bar, and directional keys left and down do not work. I've been looking into the problem thinking it could be a software issue. Can anyone help?Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You need to install the Windows support software in Windows to make it run properly. You have to download and install these drivers in Windows > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1630?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
After installing them, I recommend you to look for a newer GPU driver -
Did MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) support memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3
Did MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) support memory: 8GB 1333MHz DDR3??
The correct RAM specifications for your 2010 MBP are: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.
What you quote may or may not work, and if it does seem to work, it may not work correctly. For one to deviate from the correct specifications often leads to unnecessary complications. One only has to explore many posts on this subject on this forum.
Best places to get RAM for your MBP are from OWC or Crucial.
Note, I have a 2010 MBP and I have made said upgrade.

How to upgrade my iMac 27-inch Mid 2010 for video editing?
Hi there, I have an iMac 27-inch, Mid 2010 1TB that I would like to upgrade to work well with film editing (using programs like Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.)
My System's specs:
iMac 27 Inch Mid-2010
- 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3
- 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
- ATI Radeon HD 5670 512 MB
- Last 4 Digits of the Serial Number is JDNP
I'm quite unfamiliar with upgrading an iMac and was hoping I could find some help here regarding what is possible to upgrade on my system? I understand that installing RAM is quite easy, but is it possible to upgrade the Processor and Graphics Card? And what about Installing a bigger hard drive or SSD? Also, where do I take my iMac to get these upgrades? Apple Store? Hopefully I'm not sounding like a complete idiot here. Any help would be greatly appreciated! If you are not computer savvy and have never upgraded a computer before, then you need to see what Apple can do for you, but it maybe better to take your Mac to a third party Apple authorised reseller/repair center as they will be more likely to do actual modifications to your Mac. Apple stores tend to only stick with installing stock OEM Apple hardware.
The CPU cannot be replaced or upgraded or replaced as I believe it is soldered to the logic board.
The GPU maybe able to be upgraded, but the only other GPU option that it can be replaced with is the the 1 GB VRAM GPU version that was a GPU chip model available during the 2010 iMac model year.
This will be hard to locate and, probably, very expensive to purchase (at least $300 U.S.D..).
A third party Mac compatible SSD should be able to be installed, but will be expensive, too!
Get as large an SSD as you can afford to purchase and pay for the installation.
If you stick with a traditional hard drive, your Mac can take up to a 3 TB hard drive.
You CAN install additional RAM yourself. However your Mac year and model will only take a total of 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (http://www.macsales.com). -
Upgrade 21.5-inch, Mid 2010 - problem
Hi,
Anyone had this problem?
I bought 2 memory module Corsair DDR3 cmsa4gx3m1a1333c9 1333 mhz 9-9-9-24 4GB, to install on my iMac 21.5 - inch, Mid 2010 (Processor 3,06 GHz Intel Core i3, 4GB 1333Mhz DDR3 Memory Model 2389).
After installing the iMac was unstable, locking and initializing alone.
Removed the original memories and left only the Corsair and ran the AHT test and Memtest86 also, in both cases the tests caught.
I tested the memories in a notebook with Windows and the problem does not appear.
All memories are DDR3 1333 10600
Thank you.Memory is a devilishly awkward thing to buy anywhere else but the following two companies.
Many people on these forums speak well of them.
In North America contact OWC … Upgrade Apple iMac Memory
In Europe contact Crucial.com … RAM Memory Upgrade
Both companies have facilities to guide you and will recommend the correct memory package to meet whatever needs you describe to them.
There may be benefits buying from your own geographical location insofar as Shipping charges, Local sales taxes and Exchange rates. Check out the basic memory costs and do your sums.
Guide to required RAM. Lookup Mac Specs By Serial Number, Order, Model & EMC Number, Model ID @ EveryMac.com
While clearly the correct memory Apple are generally overpriced.
But to follow up these suggestions you will need to be able to return the corsair memory for refund and I don't know how you will do this. The suppliers of the memory above offer a full guarantee so you will need to talk to your suppliers. Did they recommend it is the key point.
Let us know how you get on. -
Can I use DDR3 ram 1066Mhz memory instead of 1067 Mhz in a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2010)?. In my system it shows 1067 Mhz ddr3? Because I am from india. And I could find 1067Mhz DDR3 in any store.
please guide me. I want to upgrade my machine RAM from 2GB to more 6 GB.
Thanks. The RAM is actually 1066 2/3. Some manufacturers round it up to 1067 some round it down to 1066

Hi there--
I have a fully stock-configured (no mods, no hard drive tweaks, etc.) Macbook Pro (17-inch, mid 2010, i5 model). It's only 3 months old. Running 10.6.4, everything updated and NO peripherals connected...
Anyhow, I was working at Starbucks yesterday morning and the system froze for no reason. Was doing semi-heavy workload with Photoshop CS5 and iTunes going and Safari downloading. Mouse would freeze in-place, iTunes starts stuttering in a loop. I waited, but system remained "frozen" -- only thing I can do at this point is shutdown via the power button.
I powered back up and system froze at the spinning progress indicator that you see on boot-up . I shutdown, powered back up... was able to work for about 10 minutes and same system freeze. I powered down for two hours, powered up, and same thing happened again.
*I've documented these freeze ups via video.* See my Youtube playlist, and the videos titled "crash" here (videos are encoded at 720p -- so click option for more clarity):
http://www.youtube.com/viewplaylist?p=38CDEF9C98B96BCE
I've also screen capped the crash logs which make me think there is something wrong with the video components of this machine. A whole lotta "Nvidia" related language.
*See screencaps here:*
http://www.flickr.com/photos/hildie/sets/72157624689980753/
Does anyone have experience analyzing crash logs, and can tell me what this might be about?
Took it to Genius Bar (Apple Store @ Beverly Center, Los Angeles) early yesterday evening. They were nice, but didn't offer any clear theories other than they think there is something wrong when the system switches from the Intel on-board graphics to the Nvidia graphics. They took the system from me and said they would "check it out for a couple days" and get back to me.
I'm frustrated because I run an extremely clean system (system has fresh OS install only a month ago), and not used to mysterious hardware issues hampering my workflow. Especially when I'm 90% done with updating my design portfolio and desperately need to get back to work!
PS - I tried the latest EFI update, and the issue was still happening after the update.
Thanks.
[email protected]Your frustration is very understandable. It sounds like a hardware issue of some sort. The AHT does not test everything, so it will not necessarily find every possible hardware issue. Apple has a more sophisticated hardware test they can run, and often hardware issues may not show up until the machine is heated up. What they probably want to do is to try to reproduce the freeze and then run the test to see what is wrong.
You can run the cleanest system possible, and still be beset by a hardware problem, which can only be solved by replacing the faulty parts. Here's hoping that the Apple guys can discover what is wrong and fix it for you.
Hardware problems can be intermittent and hard to find. If they can't make it freeze and therefore don't find anything, then the next step would be to use it at the Apple Store until it freezes up and then give it to them to evaluate.
Good luck! -

Thunderbolt Bus:You have the misfortune of having purchased a model identifier 6.2 MBP that has a history of GPU problems. There was a recall on these models but that has expired.
You may have the logic board replaced at your expense.
Or you may download this software:
https://gfx.io/
It will allow you to disable the discrete GPU which should stop the kernel panics. You will be able to run the MBP on just the integrated GPU but at the expense of graphics performance.

I have a MBP 13-inch, Mid 2010 and have just upgraded to mountain lion and am trying to connect it to my apple tv however i dont get the air play icon on my mac i have followed all the advise on support anyone able to help??

Mavericks slowed down my MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)
I did a clean install of 10.6.3 (which came with my MacBook Pro). Then upgraded to 10.6.8 to be able to download Mavericks from the App store. Installed Mavericks and everything (boot-up, application lauch, opening folders, etc.) has been dragging since then. Can someone explain a better way to do the installation or changes to make to improve the speed?
Thank you,
MacBook Pro 13 inch (Mid 2010)I have the same problem. I have 4gb of RAM; I was going to upgarde to 8, but seeing that you have 8, this probably won't help.
I feel like it's progressivly getting slower as well.
I was going to get a solid state drive and more RAM to fix the issue.
Looking at my activity monitor I show this:
As it sits right now, I have just Chrome open, facebook tab, email tab and this thread tab open and it's using 3.99 of my memory. Kernal_task is using the most memory.
I dont want to buy a new computer but maybe it's just too old?
Any info would be great. I'm not terribly technical and I love my mac, makes me sad to think of getting rid of it! Altho excited for a new one -
Macbook pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 crashing very bad after mavericks update
Hello Community,
I updated my 15-inch, Mid 2010 macbook pro from snow leopard to mavericks with the gratis update that appeared one day in march i believe. Since then its been crashing sporadically with the simplest of actions like creating a new folder. I thought it was due to some peripherals USBs (which sometimes helped when unplugged) but now i cannot single out anything.
I must admit I am not really knowledgeable when it comes to software fixes, but i will try to do anything you recommend can help. (really would like to avoid a clean sweep of HD...)
Thank you all in advanced,
Here is a copy of the latest panic report:

Thunderbolt Bus:You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may have a logic-board defect covered by this recall.
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present. However, according to reports, some units may pass the test, and yet still be deemed eligible for repair under the program. Your experience may vary.
Print the first page of the panic report, if any, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the recall only applies within three years of purchase. After that, Apple may refuse the service. In that case, you may be quoted a price of about $300 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.
The model was discontinued on February 24, 2011, so the recall has nominally ended. Some units may have been sold after that date by Apple as refurbished, or by resellers as new, and they should still be covered.
Some owners report that their unit was repaired under the program after the deadline had passed. Others report that the repair was covered by the extended warranty from a credit-card issuer. Again, your experience may vary.
Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
If it's too late for your unit to be repaired under the program, and you don't want to pay for a new logic board, you may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.
If you're dissatisfied with Apple's response, please keep in mind that no one here represents the company or can help with customer-service issues.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5 with Mavericks is very slow
Hi everybody,
i have already seen this discussion (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24018625#24018625) started by campitor and allegedly solved by arthur but only for campitor's concrete case and already closed. Therefore I have made the same checkup with Etrecheck (see below). It would be really great to solve this problem because I need my mac for work and I am getting really desperate: it's just too slow for effective working. I am really desperate and really thankful for any kind of hint or help that could bring back my machine to normal workable speed.
cheers,
Cris

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) Crashes Every So Often
I've been having issues with my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) for several months now. I have Mountain Lion and every time I have several apps open it crashes and reboots. I took it to the Apple Store twice and both times they reinstalled the OS. I still have the problem. Here's the last report that was sent to Apple, please help:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers may not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue.
Print the first page of the panic report, and the support page linked above, and bring them with you.
Note that the replacement program only applies within three years of purchase. If you wait beyond that date, Apple may refuse the service.
You may be able to stop the panics by disabling automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saver preference pane, but that's not a solution.
Most likely, the logic board will be replaced. Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility.
