15 inch vs 17 inch workspace

Hello all,
just wandering how much more space you get with the 17 inch. It is only less than 2 inches difference in actual siza but a huge difference in resolution... any pics or something like this?

Generally speaking, your average PC at 15.4" will be running at 1280x800 resolution. Your MBP 15" Will run at 1440x900 which is considerably more room.
However personally my opinion is the text size and window size in Mac OS X is a little larger than Windows so it looks better at this resolution anyway and will probably be about the same experience.
The 17" brings a huge resolution in to play, 1920x1200, which generally speaking only starts at around 22-24" Desk monitors!
So you will have an absolutely huge working space with the 17" model and will be fully ready to engage in high definition editting. It's also above full resolution 1080p hd tv at 1920x1080 so you will be ready to enjoy a full array of high definition tv and movies by hooking up an external blu-ray drive.
Obviously at this resolution the text size of the operating system will be a lot smaller and websites will appear smaller but you will be able to fit a lot more on screen at once and modern browsers are more than capable of increasing the size should you need to.
Hope that helps a litte. Since I don't actually have one in front of me I don't have many real observations to make!

  • IMac 21.5-inch, Late 2013 freezes and crashes

I purchased this computer April 2014 and within 2 months it started freezing and then crashing. This happens randomly and has occurred approximately 12 - 15 time; Apple Care has been consulted five times - once which involved taking the computer back to Apple for their diagnostics.  Each time, a tech from AppleCare has accessed the computer remotely, run the check disk utility and on two occasions, the hard drive has been reset.  Despite these efforts, this issue continues to happen, the latest being Oct 10th in the a.m.  I managed to find the logs myself and I would appreciate any input from someone who knows how to read them, as I do not.
Thanks in advance for your assistance,
    Barb

I bought myself a new 24" Asus 1920x1080 monitor for Christmas.  I did this in anticipation of buying a new Mac Mini when they were released this year.  Unfortunately I can't wait any longer for the Mac Mini.  I have a video editing job that I must start right away.  So I've decided to spend the extra money and buy a new 21.5 inch 2.7GHz iMac.  Here is my problem.  It is 2 inches too tall for the useful side of my desk.  It is also smaller than my Asus monitor.  So I really want to be able to use the Asus as my main workspace, and my 47" Samsung HDTV as the video display.  I know the iMac will only support 2 displays.  My question is, will it support 2 displays not including the built-in monitor.  I would like to buy 2 Thunderbolt to HDMI connectors and leave the iMac monitor black.  Will the iMac do that?  Also, the literature says it will only support a 30 inch external monitor.  I'm assuming that it won't care as long as the resolution is only 1920x1080, but is that a correct assumption?  I don't know what to do anymore.  I already have a MBP and I can't afford to spring for a second.  Ideally I'd love to wait for the new Mac Mini, but it's starting to look like it may not come out until the next generation of Intel chips are released, maybe not even this year.  I've already been waiting since last October.  If I can't turn the iMac monitor off, I may have to buy a new desk with more clearance.  Any help would be appreciated.  Also, just to make sure, FCP 7 will run on this iMac right?  I'm sure it will, but I can't wrap my head around FCPX and I want to avoid any nasty surprises.  Thanks.

I don't know which softwares you will use for video editing, but if I were you, I would buy the iMac 27" models instead of 21.5". It is because for 27" model, you can add RAM easily at the back of iMac. Therefore, you won't afraid for having not enough RAM. However, for 21.5" model, you cannot add RAM by yourself unless you are brave enough to remove the screen, which may damage other part of iMac.
If you have budget constraint, I will recommend you to choose the sixth choice. It is because video-editing depends on CPU, RAM and Display Card mainly, especially RAM, which I strongly suggest you to have at least 16 GB. For the CPU, the 3.1 GHz Qual Core i7 performs better than with i5-processor significantly. The i7 CPU has a technology which allows two threads to run simultaneously on each core, so a qual-core iMac has eight virtual cores.

  • How can I connect my Early 2011" Macbook Pro 13" inch, with a generic Mini Display Port to HDMI connector, to a LG 32LD340 LCD TV, using Mountain Lion 10.8.2?

I have an Early 2011" macbook pro 13 inch (core i5 2.3ghz 4gb ram 320hdd) with Mountain Lion 10.8.2, and I want to connect it via Mini DP to HDMI connector, and a HDMI cable to a LCD TV LG 32LD340. When I had Lion OS, I had no problems at all.

If you have an external drive equal to or larger than your internal HD, clone your internal to it with either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. Test the clone to make sure it's bootable. Then upgrade either one. Try it out first.

  • I have a brand new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM and 256 gb SSD where the screen flickered abnormally and got dead all of a sudden while uploading a photograph in FB. Can anybody help?

I have a new MacBook Air 11 inch, 4gb RAM, 256 SSD and use Mavericks OS. It is still under waranty period.
Just few days ago while I was uploading a photograph in facebook, the screen started flickering abnoromally. I tried using the escape button but nothing was working so switched off by pressing the power button.
After few minutes I tried to switch it on but my system never waked up. Called up the Apple Support, did SMC and PRAM but nothing worked. Then I was advised to take it to Apple's authorised service centre.
At the service centre the engineers diagnoised and then said that the MLB/mother board needs to be replaced. Had waited for six-long days and today they had replaced the MLB/mother board. Now, the system came to life but nothing has booted. The screen goes white and a '?' question mark icon keeps on flickering.
After thoroughly diagnoising it the engineer said that now the problem is with the SSD and the worse thing is all my important documents and photographs etc are no more there. And I don't have a backup of the same!
While Apple Support contact centre is assuring they would replace any other parts if found faulty, but I feel differently. First, the MLB/mother board was changed now they say it is SSD problem - so if the SSD too is replaced there are possibilities of more faults coming up. All I can see and feel that this particular machine has turned out to be architectually deffective that calls for immediate replacement.
Right now I am using a friend's windows pc to write this mail.
Feeling completely miserable - all my expectatations gone after investing in such an expensive machine, loss of all my data, wastage of time and energy and to top it all affecting my daily work.
Can anybody please advise what shall I do?

Take the system to an Apple store to be fixed or replaced as the one you have has defective hardware.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed on MacBook Pro 8,2 (15 inch, Late 2011)

    Hi Everyone,
For the second time now, I have to bring my Macbook Pro 8,2 (macbookpro8,2, 15 inch, late 2011) running Mountain Lion back to the Genius Bar due to a unrecognized Wi-Fi Airport adapter. The computer was purchased in March of 2012.
The problem started as I was watching 'The Daily Show" online, when suddenly, I lost connection. I clicked on the wi-fi adapter icon on the top menu bar, and saw that no access points were available when there normally were over 20, including mine in the house. I went into the network settings under system preferences and saw that the wi-fi card was off (although it was just on and still showed the full-signal indicator in the menu bar), and attempted to click the button to turn it back on with no response. All other options were either greyed-out or displayed no information. The Hardware tab didn't even display and the mac address suddenly became all zeros.
I rebooted the computer, only to discover the wi-fi indicator on the menu bar displaying no signal. Upon clicking on the icon, the dreaded "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" was displayed. I tried resetting the SMC and PRAM/NVRAM with no success. I also rand the Hardware Troubleshooter ( Option - D upon bootup ) which neither saw the communications device nor reported finding any problem.
I brought it to the Genius Bar, and they ended up replacing BOTH the Logic Board, Wi-Fi adapter, and connection cable between the wi-fi adapter and logic board on July 23, 2012.
Now, it's October 10, 2012, and last night, as I was working through a VPN tunnel on the terminal on one of our remote servers, the SAME THING happened AGAIN! The connection was dropped, same scenario as above, and upon bootup I was greeted with the  "Wi-Fi: No Hardware Installed" message again.
The hardware magically disappeard with no mention of this in the Console, as far as I can tell. The Console mentions the loss of connection and inability to contact DNS, but nothing relating to hardware.
For the record, the bluetooth continued to function both times I've had this issue. The first time this happened, I was running Lion and now I'm running Mountain Lion.
So apparently there is something really wrong with either the physical enclosure causing a short somehow, the quality of the Broadcom chip on this wi-fi device, or there's some type of software/power causing the chip to short out.
My compouter is as protected as can be - it's in a Speck plastic housing with a keyboard cover, which was purchased after the first incident, I use it on a hard flat plastic laptop tablet at home, and carry it around in a Timbuk2 Laptop bag. It also has never been dropped.
What's the problem here? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks and all the best of luck and success solving your own computer problems

Sorry for the late reply. I had a bad experience with the Apple Store and the 'Genius' Bar where I live. However, in the end, I received my MacBook Pro back from repair and everything is working.
Like I said in my previous post, the first time the Wi-Fi broke, I was using Lion. The mother (Logic) board was replaced as well as the Wi-Fi card.
The second time it broke, I was using Mountain Lion. Booting up the Recovery partition and Snow Leopard (new install) did not solve the issue. The Apple Store confirmed that the Wi-Fi card was broken through various testing, which I observed.
Since the attenna wires for the Wi-Fi run through the display, we decided the next logical step was to replace the Wi-Fi card and the display. The reasoning is that there could have been a short or cross connection in the attenna wiring that was causing the Wi-Fi cards to short-out/burn-out. The Bluetooth continued to work in both cases the Wi-Fi failed, meaning that it was unlikely a cable problem.
Since the display and wi-fi have been replaced (20121025), I've had no problems. The wi-fi card is working.
I'm glad the kext file solution has worked for you. I've seen posts on this solution; however, after determining that this was indeed a hardware failure (by using Recovery console, booting from Snow Leopard, and using Hardware Troubleshooter (it didn't even see the Wi-Fi) ), I didn't bother with fiddling with the kext (driver) files. Besides, this hardware is supposed to be designed to work with the OS without any problems whatsoever. Shame on Apple if they don't ship proper drivers for their hardware!

  • How I Managed to Install Windows 8.1 Pro on an iMac 27-inch, Late 2013

As is typical with many of my Boot Camp installs, this one did *not* goes as smoothly as planned. This installation was particularly troublesome, so I thought I would share how I managed to set up Boot Camp on a brand new iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) using a Windows 8.1 Pro DVD and an external Apple SuperDrive. These are the steps I took:
Download Boot Camp Support Software 5.1.5640 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721)
Copy Boot Camp Support Software to empty MS-DOS (FAT)-formatted USB key
Run Boot Camp Assistant and select third option only (Install Windows 7 or later version)
Computer would reboot after Boot Camp Assistant finished but would boot back into Mac environment and not continue Windows installation
Boot computer holding down option key and select Windows (with DVD icon) and go through initial setup process (could go as  far as trying to format Boot Camp partition as NTFS and then got stuck)
Quit Windows installer and reboot computer holding down option key and select EFI Boot
    Run Windows installer
These same steps worked for another iMac (same model) that I set up later the same day.

Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:
    DVD movies.
    Audio CDs.
Copy protected discs such as game discs.
Install discs for an operating system such as Microsoft Windows (for use with Boot Camp), or Mac OS X.
    Burn a CD or DVD

  • I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008) and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model. I have read some reviews of Maverick and Yosemite making the older macs slower. Is this true?

I have a MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008), Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, 4GB Memory. and am currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would like to know which is the most stable upgrade for my model? Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite?
When I had gone to the apple care centre in India a few months ago to upgrade my OSX to Mountain Lion, I was told that considering my macbook pro's specs, upgrading it would just make it less efficient, and that I should stick to Snow Leopard unless I consider buying a newer mac that would benefit from it. Is this true? I find it a bit hard to believe. Which update is most recommended?
I also notice that my mac has gotten considerably slower. While using chrome, it buffers and struggles with even just 5 tabs open. Could this have something to do with my current ios? As a precaution, I have always been making sure I have enough free space on disk i.e around 70 - 100 free out of 250GB.
    Any advice is appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Mavericks is no longer available from the App Store, so your choice is Yosemite. One option is to create a new partition (~30- 50 GB), install the new OS, and ‘test drive’ it. If you like/don’t like it it, you can then remove the partition. Do a backup before you do anything. By doing this, if you don’t like it you won't have to go though the revert process.
Check to make sure your applications are compatible.

  • My PC has blue screened twice in the past week so I force quit it it came back on a few times after that it is now grey screening with inch wide blue lines from top to bottom the apple logo is there and it is trying to boot up but nothing happening

My Mac has blue screened a couple of times this week it started to work a couple of times after that but now it is grey screening with inch wide blue lines from top to bottom the apple logo is also there it is trying to boot up again but won't. Not sure don't know anything about how to fix things but I suspect the fan has stopped working as I can't hear one. The problem I have I now live in Turkey and I am 1000 km from the nearest apple shop which is in Istanbul I believe and I now live in Didim, Altinkum I don't trust the everyday Turkish shop to take it to as they will tell you they know how to fix it but will probably make it worse, typical in Turkey. Please can someone help as we use it for our business and obviously I need it up and running ASAP I am using IPad and iPhone at moment but can't access my files which are on PC.

    Thanks for that information!
I'm sure I will be calling AppleCare, but the problem is, they charge for the phone calls don't they? Because I don't have money to be spending to be on the phone with a support service.
In other things, it seemed like the only time my MacBook was working was when I had Snow Leopard without the 10.6.8 update download that was supposed to be done to prepare for OS X Lion.
When I look at the information of my HD it says that I have 10.6.8 but that was the install that it claimed to have failed and caused me to restart resulting in all of the repeated problems.
Also, because my computer is currently down, and I've lost all files how would that effect the use of my iPhone? Because if it doesn't get fixed by the time OS 5 is released, how would I be able to upgrade?!

  • HT203254 My MacBook Pro 15-inch with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors just failed. Do you guys know if apple still fixes them?

My MacBook Pro 15-inch with NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processors just failed. Do you guys know if apple still fixes them?

I tried last week. The best I could get was a discount on the repair, but the damage to my logic board by the GPU caused it to no longer boot. The program ended in December last year, but it has been extended in the past.
If you have no other damage you might be able to get a flat rate tier 1 repair if you are in the USA.

  • MBP (13-inch, early 2011) goes into hibernation instead of safe sleep upon closing the lid (only when using battery power)

    MBP details
13-inch MacBook Pro, early 2011 (model identifier: MacBookPro8,1)
Running Yosemite, OS X 10.10.1 (however, problem started while using Mavericks)
    2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    4 GB memory
    Symptoms
    * the MBP goes into hibernation instead of sleep upon closing the lid on battery power (i.e.,  when AC adapter is NOT connected)
-- problem does not occur when AC adapter is connected
    * putting the computer to sleep by other means does not induce the problem; these other means include:
      -- [i] option+command+Power,
-- [ii] Apple Icon --> Sleep,
-- [iii] in Terminal: pmset sleepnow
    * the battery is NOT getting drained at all; if I close the lid on 87%, the battery is still at about 87% when I get the MBP back up and running
To be as clear as possible:
    (1) MBP is on and in use  (power source: battery); battery is at X%
    (2) the lid is then closed
    (3) the battery indicator light glows bright for about 10 seconds, then shuts off, and with it so does the MBP (all fans and sounds cease)
    (4) opening the lid and pressing any key on the keyboard does nothing (the computer is not sleeping)
    (5) to turn the MBP back on, I must hit the power button once; this brings up  and the gray screen and loading bar indicative of returning from hibernation
    (6) log in; battery is still at X%
    Attempted Solutions / Fixes
There are Apple Discussions addressing similar MBP issues, many of which at least have work-arounds, if not full-blown solutions. However, I have tried many of the proposed work-arounds and solutions; nothing has solved my problem. Such attempted solutions include:
      * made sure EFI/SMC firmware was up to date
      * updated all software
      * logged in as a different user
      * booted in Safe Mode
      * reset the PRAM
      * repaired disk permissions using Disk Utility
      * repaired additional disk permissions in recovery mode (a la this chron.com advice)
      * ran the Apple Hardware Test multiple times (short test while plugged in, short test on battery, extended test while plugged in, extended test on battery)
      * booted from an external known-good OS on USB drive
      * reseated the RAM
      * used MemTest to test the RAM's health (it was good)
      * tested my battery's health with the app Battery Health (it is healthy!)
      * booted my computer with one stick of the MBP's original RAM at a time (figured "why not?")
      * booted my computer using other sticks of RAM
      * checked my power management settings using PMSET in the terminal (e.g., pmset -g); tried various hibernation modes (e.g., sudo pmset -a hibernationmode X, where X=0,1,3, etc)
      * searched/grepped through my power management logs and Console messages to look for googleable items (e.g., pmset -g log | grep WORD, where WORD=failure, sleep, etc);  still have not found help online
      * brought the MBP to a Mac Genius
    -- he ran some further tests, but found nothing;
-- he re-installed my OS as a hopeful-hail-mary-just-maybe-last-ditch effort; the problem persisted!
-- we both agreed that we had ruled out a software cause
-- he offered me to leave my MBP to get fixed for a flat fee of $300.00 (which after a couple weeks of trying to figure this out is starting to sound more and more reasonable)
Given that it is likely not a software issue, what hardware might it be? By booting from an OS on an external drive, I think I've ruled out a bad hard drive or hard drive cable. Also, given that inducing sleep in any way other than closing the MBP's lid does not cause the problem, it seems there might be a wire (or something) in the hinge section of the MBP that gets moved when the lid is closed possibly causing some kind of short circuit...or something.
If someone with more experience interpreting Console messages, for example, can help, I'd be happy to provide some logs, or any additional information.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

Ok, this is a crazy-simple, quasi-embarrassing fix, but I'll post it anyway just in case anyone is having a similar problem (for example, this guy: Changes to pmset being ignored).
Some time around late last August / early September (2014) this issue began happening for me (specifically, issue = closing lid while on battery power induces hibernation / shut down instead of sleep --- independent of hibernation mode). Maybe it was when I upgraded to Yosemite (not sure what the exact date of that was). As detailed in my original post, I frantically tried everything I could think of... At that time, however, I had quite a few presentations and posters to create and present at meetings and conferences, so I held off fixing it for a couple of months and returned to it this past week, where I tried a few more things listed above, but again to no avail...
This morning, I simply tried fudging around with all my power management settings again (via pmset in Terminal). The simplicity of the fix surprised me. But now that I understand it, I know it is likely the same fix for other threads I've read, such as the one above:
                                        (TLDR in bold)
    (1) Take note of your power management settings (Terminal:  pmset -g custom)
    (2) Is the "standby" flag set to 0? If so, set it to 1. Wa-la! Done.
This fix is crazy and embarrassing b/c I was so close to it for so long. I tried changing my hibernation modes multiple times (sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X, where X=0,1,3,25,etc). I read about manipulating other PMSET settings that helped other people with newer MBPs, like "autopoweroff" and "autopoweroffdelay" --- settings that I do not have on the MBP early 2011 (check your settings: pmset -g cap). And most amazingly of all, I even messed with the "standbydelay" setting, trying to make it so long that my computer should never go into hibernation... Yet, from what I can tell by looking over my notes, I never simply set "standby" from 0 to 1.
There are interesting questions that arise due to this fix. For example, why did this problem persist on clean installs of OS Yosemite? Is "standby" being set to 0 the Yosemite default? I'm not sure. If it is, then Kappy was right: this was normal behavior... It just wasn't always the normal behavior...at least not for my MBP. Normal behavior (hibernatemode 3) used to be (and now is again) that the MBP goes into safe sleep, and then only after an allotted amount of time will it go into full-blown hibernation.
NOTE: the "standby" and "standbydelay" PMSET settings are not available in some earlier MBP models (e.g., my brother has a 2010 and does not have these settings); so if you're having a similar problem with an earlier model, this fix might not be of any help to you.

  • Macbook pro 15 inch wifi problem (late 2011)

    Hello,
Here I write a little desperate with this problem that I have on the MacBook Pro (late 2011) with WIFI .
For several months ago, when I power on the MBP is all apparently normal , spend a few minutes and I lose the WIFI , the icon still comes out as "connected " but no WIRELESS signal , I turned off the WIFI, but, when I try to change back to turn ON, the icon of WIFI still OFF ( the inverted triangle ) . Restarting the MBP and still the problem no signal and appears as disabled , delete PRAM several times until finally everything works again , spend some time and again the same thing sometimes is fine for several hours, go out to eat and return and again the same thing, the worst was when I saw the message "Hardware not found" and "X " where the icon goes WIFI . I rebooted several times and not managed , this was the "hardware not found" message. Some time ago I went something like , when Lion had and read that resetting the PRAM and managed , never came out , but now even that it manages , and it is becoming more common , I thought it was the OS ( MacOSX Mavericks ) so I reinstalled (I'm not used Time Machine, I install all again ), this work the lasted several days without fail, until she passed again, I'm out of WiFi, when I see no WIFI signal in the list , restart me WIFI goes off and I can not change , restart it goes back to " hardware not found" and so on.
Now desperate for this, I opened the MBP , disconnected the cables from the Airport card and reconnected with care and making sure you are all well , turned on the MBP again and works!!, I lasted two weeks , then I thought it was that. But again the whole problem again.
Already investigating more online and I found some details from other users
1 / Both WIFI and Bluetooth are on the same card ( the q disconnected and reconnected )
2 / If the card was wrong , losing the WIFI Bluetooth should lose , but I tried Bluetooth and has no problems
3 / Reported that resetting PRAM or SMC but still, in my case, does not work.
Now all I have left to rule is the WIFI antenna that is located ( if I remember correctly ) for the bottom of the screen, and according to several users this tends to fail from constant use to close or open the MBP (or either to cover or uncover ) , and sometimes it just heats and heats close to this area .
Has anyone had a similar problem? My MBP turns 2 only on March 7, 2014 , I can not believe all that cost me and now is about to fail , I have a Sony VAIO Core 2 Duo for about 5 years (or more) ago and is still running and has been dropped many times and nothing has ever happened : (
Additional data on my MBP ,
Several months ago ( long before the problem with the WIFI) I changed the hard drive for an SSD ( 250GB Corsair Neutron X ) .
There is a problem that often makes me too, is that when you close the MBP ( to open ) , and open it back again ( out of sleep) the following happens :
1 / It instantly freezes when waking from sleep and I have a long wait to enter the password.
2 / When you leave idle normal let me put the password, but just when giving ENTER freezes
3 / Out of sleep, let me put the key, ENTER and when I load the desktop freezes
    Another problem :
This only happened to me a few times , as I mentioned , my MBP is formatted ( have Mavericks ) before formatted (clean install without time machine) , I closed the MBP ( I sent to sleep) and the open the screen was black , but as with bright, and not leave the state, turned off force ( pressing the button) , start the MBP again (power on) charged normal gray screen with apple but with a fairly low brightness, spent a few seconds and turned the brightness to normal and started normally .
I hope some can help me with these problems.
PD : I'm from Peru , if anyone knows a trusted service that please let me know .
    Thank you very much .

Your wifi problem sounds very much like the problem I had. The wifi would drop out, the icon showed it was still connected. If I turned it off, I couldn't turn it back on. Another user here pointed me to the problem, which was the wifi cable (the flat cable goint from the card to the motherboard). I found it on ebay for $13 and it's been running fine since I replaced it. This is the repair guide for your machine. The part number will be on there if you click the link.

  • Should i return my macbook pro 13 inch and get the baseline 13 inch air?

i recently bought the 13 inch baseline mbp non retina. I am majoring in mechanical engineering and thsi will be my junior year so my main programs i will be using will be matlab, c++, and maple. I was wondering if i should return this and get the new macbook air 13inch with the 128 gb ssd.  my main concerns are that the processor is not powerful enough and the ram is too low and the hard drive is too small. let me know what you think. some things that i really like are the battery life and the new wifi? Please give me any information that could help my decision. I do plan on upgrading my ram from 4gb to 8gb in a few weeks.

If you buy an AIR, you will be locked into whatever it has. For life. The regular model can be upgraded in both the RAM and the drive, be it an HDD or an SSD.
If you determine you need better graphics performance, get a 15" regular instead. Has twin GPUs and vastly better graphics results.
