15" Macbook Pro (2007) will no longer boot in any manner. (Please, help.)

Evening, everyone.
I could beat my head against the wall for all the frustration my MBP is giving me! I really hope some kind soul will be able to help me. I will try to be methodical in explaining the whole story of what I have done and what appears to be wrong, so that maybe you fine detectives can pluck out the relevant information and piece a solution together:
I was multi-tasking about two days ago (perhaps too much) and I had installed the most recent OS X (Leopard) Auto-update. I had also downloaded and installed the program "Little Snitch," and both the update and Snitch were asking that I restart. So, I did--sure enough, it went to the spacey-purpley Leopard screen and appeared to have successfully updated. It shut off and began to boot up as usual. However, it appeared to be stuck at the Apple and rotating dial screen, with the bluish-greyish background. All of a sudden, the screen went black and the computer shut itself off completely.
I tried to turn it back on, with the exact same sequence of events. I ran it in Cmd-V mode (is it called.... verbose?) and it mentioned Little Snitch amidst the rest of the report (which is what makes me concerned that it might be the source of the issue). At the end of the repost, it said something about "shutting off the CPU" and "killing all processes." Then, again, it shut itself off completely. I tried Cmd boot up (to select the boot disk, as I have a Bootcamp partition with Windows XP that has never caused me trouble before) and selected the OS X volume. Again, no change.
Finally, I hunted down a friend who had just purchased a new Mac to borrow his OS X install disc. I upgraded to Tiger, so I don't know if that might be why his boot disk did not work for everything I needed it for. I don't have Y disc with me, because I'm from California and I left it somewhere in my office. But, I was able to boot from his disk--although it reported that I "could not install OS X Tiger on this machine"--and use the Disk Utility. I tried to use the verify and repair functions, but they both came back with "sibling errors."
I may have made a crucial error here: I then tinkered with the Open Firmware Password Settings. I tried a few of the things I already had over again, and then went to bed.
Well, that was all last night. I came back from work today, determined to try using target disk mode and my friend's mac in order to solve the problem. I followed all the procedures necessary, plugged in the cable, booted up my kaputnik target computer holding down the "t" key, but my computer was totally unresponsive to the command. Now, NONE of the start up commands will work. I cannot boot from the OS X disc, I cannot run the cmd-v thing, I cannot "Cmd" select a drive at startup... I don't know if this has to do with my setting of a firmware password, because it was not doing any of this stuff yesterday.
I'm freaking out. I'm a student, it's finals time, and I have 3/4 of my thesis on that machine. Please, help me work this one out. Even if it's just a way to get to the hard drive in target disk mode to get those files I need without really fixing the problem. I'll be happy to provide any other information that might be helpful in finding a solution.

Restart with the Option key held down and the Mac OS X install disk inserted, provide the firmware password, click on the DVD, press the button with the straight arrow, access the firmware settings, disable the password, and use FireWire Target Disk mode. If you can't do that or it doesn't work, contact Apple.

I HATE my new MACBOOK PRO, it will not let me open any PDF files and I downloaded the ADOBE READER three freaking times and it keeps saying that all the files are corrupt or damaged. I would rather have my 2008 Dell at this point. what is wrong with this thing

Perhaps the PDF files are corrupted.
Hit the command key and spacebar, a blue Spotlight in the upper right hand corner appears, now type Preview and press return on the Preview program.
Now you can try opening the PDF's from the file menu and see what's going on.
If they are corrupted, perhaps they are trojans from your Windows PC or gotten from a bad location online.
Download the free ClamXav and run a scan on the possibly infected folder.

  • After replacing the logic board in my Macbook Pro it will no longer connect to the App Store.

I recently had to replace the logic board in my early 11 Macbook Pro (first gen i7).  With the release of Yosemite just a few weeks away I am trying to update from Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to Mavericks.  I'm afraid if I don't after this update it will become much harder.  I always lived by the rule if it ain't broke and for a long time Snow Leopard worked very well for what I needed to do.  All my software is current and there are no updates pending.  All my Keychain Access System Roots Certificates are good and I have no problems getting into iTunes.  I thought it might be something on Apples end but after 36 hours it's still the same problem.  When I try to open the App Store I get this:
Any ideas.  I don't use the App Store that much but until this I had never had this problem before.
    Thanks for the help.

    From the menu bar, select
               ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or invalid according to this web form, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.

  • MacBook Pro 17" Will Not Install Boot Camp

Has anyone else found that Boot Camp will NOT install on a 17" MacBook Pro? We were able to partition the drive and install Windows but when we tried to install the Mac Drivers we kept getting the error message "this software will not install on your hardware". This is very frustrating as we bought the 17" specifically to run both Mac OSX and PC Windows. Has anyone got any ideas?

You may need to wait until Apple updates the drivers or you could try extracting them from the package then installing them that way

  • After upgrading hard drive on MacBook Pro, Premiere will no longer open

I just upgraded the internal hard drive on my MacBook Pro (mid-2010, unibody), OS 10.8.2, with an NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 M Graphics card.
I've been running Premiere Pro CS5, and then CS6, on the machine without any problems until I upgraded the hard drive (to a new Seagate Momentus XT SSHD 750GB).
Now, when I load Premiere Pro, I get the following error message: "Adobe Premiere Pro could not find any capable video play modules. Please update your video display drivers and start again."
I've tried everything I can think of, including resetting preferences, and what they suggest here: http://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/kb/error---preludevideo-play-modules.html (I installed the latest CUDA driver, and my GPU driver is up to date; I am already set up as Admin on my computer).
Another thing I did was go into Terminal and ran GPUSniffer. That was what worried me - it seemed to suggest that the card is not functioning, but I don't know if that means it's not functioning at all or not functioning in ways that Premiere can work with. Any advice? I'm tempted to open it back up and re-install the original hard drive, except that new one is making most other things noticably faster. Booting, opening and closing apps, etc.
Here's the message I got when I ran GPUSniffer:

It looks like I've solved my problem.
I decided to try again - this time cloning my original drive onto the new one instead of using Time Machine - and now everything seems to work just fine. Just faster. I can only assume that in the restoration process the first time, some necessary files got corrupted or went missing. Thanks, Bill, it was your question that made me wonder whether it might be better to create an image.

  • MacBook Pro HD issues; won't boot to any drive; need to recover data

*Apologies in advance for the lengthy post. I just want to be sure I include as much detail as possible. Thanks in advance for reading all of this and offering any thoughts and suggestions.
    I have a 13-inch late 2011 MacBook Pro running OS 10.7.
The computer recently began booting slower and slower until finally one day it did nothing but show the gray boot screen with the apple and a spinning circle and/or progress bar at the bottom. It won't do anything else. I assume it's the HD; no surprise there. What's killing me is that no matter what I do, I can't boot to any disk, internal or external, can't mount it in target disk mode, and can't repair it or recover data, which is a first for me with any HD. However, the computer still clearly sees the drive, and the drive sounds and runs normally (meaning no clicks; appropriate amount of whirs and such).
    What I've done so far:
    Reset PRAM — no help
    Reset SMC — no help
Boot in Safe Mode — same result as regular boot: gray logo screen with spinning wheel
    Disk Utility message:
Verify Disk — "Error: This disk nees to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
Repair Disk — gets as far as "Checking catalog file" then shows "Keys out of order". Next is "Rebuilding catalog B-tree." Then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired."
fsck — same as Disk Utility: "Keys out of order (4, 22016)", "Rebuilding catalog B-tree", then "The volume Macintosh HD could not be repaired." FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED." ...over and over again
If I hold Option while starting the computer, it gives me only two drives to boot from, regardless of any other external HDs or flash drives I have attached: Macintosh HD (internal), and Recovery HD (internal partition). If I choose Macintosh HD, it's hit or miss whether it prompts the Disk Utility screen or just gray-screens forever. If I choose Recovery HD, it successfully runs Disk Utility every time. Here's the thing, though — if I attach an external HD, it doesn't see it during the initial Option-startup. However, from Disk Utility I'm able to select a startup disk from the menu to restart into. It sees the externals in there every time and lets me select them as startup disks, but upon restart it returns to the gray Apple logo screen with spinning wheel and/or progress bar at bottom. Sometimes it also sees the internal Macintosh HD here, but selecting that is useless. I can't actually boot from any disk, internal or external, running full OS or even just recovery software.
I've tried using TechTool Pro 8's edisk and ProToGo bootable drives, but again, the MacBook only sees them from Disk Utility only (not on Option-start), and I can select them, but it doesn't actually boot to them; it reverts back to gray screen.
I've installed a full version of OS 10.10.2 on an external hard drive, complete with DiskWarrior 4 on it, but same problem as above — it sees it in the "Select Startup Disk" menu, but not in the initial Option-start or successful reboot.
I've tried booting from a DiskWarrior 4 DVD using C-startup. It recognizes and spins the DVD from the get-go. Eventually it boots to it (after about 20 minutes or so of reading the DVD). I'm able to launch DiskWarrior 4 and start a rebuild. However, it goes all the way through "Step 6: Constructing optimized replacement directory... Overlapped files detected: 7 ...Step 7: Finishing construction ...Step 8: Reading from disc, one moment please..." and then the computer kernel panicked. This happened several times. I reset the PRAM again, then retried DiskWarrior DVD boot, this avoided a kernel panic and it got as far as "Comparing directories... Step 9: Recording any file or folder differences; 3,449,089,956 tests..." and then DiskWarrior and the computer both freeze and I have to force shutdown.
The drive will not mount to another laptop in Target Disk Mode.
Disk Arbitrator immediately sees the the faulty laptop HD, but won't let me mount or unmount it. It's just there, grayed out.
Data Rescue 4 is able to see the faulty laptop HD through Target Disk Mode, even though the drive itself will not mount to my desktop. I am able to scan the drive using DR4, and start a data recovery process. However, DR4 is dumping all recovered data into "User Defined" ai (Adobe Illustrator) files, which makes absolutely no sense at all. What's more, the files aren't able to be opened by any program. Even files that it hasn't recovered into ai files, like txt and mpegs, cannot be opened. I've tried recovering from both the drive itself and from a clone of the drive (made through DR4), with the same result each time.
So, all of that said, I guess my first question is what the **** is going on? The drive mechanically is functioning fine, but there seems to be an issue with its readability (and the directory/files?).
What's more, why won't this laptop mount ANY drive? I should be able to Option-boot into any drive, especially if the USB ports, drives, and OS's are all fully functional, right? Is there any workaround I'm missing? Even if the internal drive and data are just screwed, what's causing a total lack of mounting or booting of any drive, internal or external?

Holy crap, I got it to work.
Essentially, I just waited until DiskWarrior reached Step 9 and told it to skip the step before it had a chance to freeze. It skipped successfully, moved on, rebuilt and replaced the faulty directory files.
So far the computer is booting like normal, I can log in, and I'm currently copying all of the data to an external as I type this.
I still have no idea why the computer wouldn't mount or boot to any drive, but I guess I'll deal with that later.

  • Dented my Macbook Pro and now it won't start up.  Please Help!

Hello. I have searched and searched and cannot find a solution.
Last night I was putting the finishing touches on my dissertation and accidentally dropped a tape dispenser on my 1-year-old MacBook Pro - it hit just to the left of the trackpad and left a nice little dent! After the "incident", I was attempting to pull up Word and the machine completely froze. I turned Mr. Mac off by holding down the power button and when I tried to restart, I never got past the Apple logo with the little spinning circle. After trying many times to restart, I made it to my desktop only twice, and after the dock appeared (with no menu bar above or desktop icons), the machine froze again. Each time, I heard the hard drive working until the big freeze.
I was able to boot off of the Leopard install disc and ran "repair disk" on my hard drive - no errors were found. Tried restarting again and got nothing. I have since tried restarting with various key combinations and the machine only responded to "C" and "Option".
This morning, I searched again and decided to try the "optioncommand+pr" to reset the PRAM as suggested to another damsel in distress with a similar issue. Now, when I try to restart, I get the gray screen followed by the chime, and then nothing - no hard drive working, no Apple logo, no spinning circle, nothing. My install CD will not spin and I none of the start-up key combinations work. It just sits there staring at me with that gray screen - laughing because my dissertation is in there somewhere and I can't get it out! Yes, I have backed my maching up on a 500G external hard drive, so I haven't lost much - but I can't access my hard drive without Mr. Mac! And I am a lonely Mac owner here - no others to borrow!
I am going to an Apple Store on Saturday, but I thought I would give you guys a chance to save my life first. Any suggestions for this girl and her Mac would be great! I am defending my dissertation next week and I'm about one small crisis from a major meltdown!!!!!!
    Thanks!

Well, my two-month-old MBP has no qualms about booting from a no-name external USB HD I put together...
Given that is is a common point of failure, I would imagine a large Apple Store should keep a stock of HD's on hand.
Now since you're a bit desperate and the genie pops up til Saturday and you seem to be the enterprising kind, let's try an experiment: if you have room enough in the external HD and assuming it isn't a Time Machine volume, why don't you plug it in, stick the Install CD and see if the installer lets you select the external drive as the install target. If you can install Leopard on it, on top of the backup without reformatting, and the Mac can boot from the drive afterwards, at least you would have some functionality restored and would be able to pull your stuff from the internal HD. Apple says booting from USB drives is not supported but that does not equate to not possible; some brands do work. Risks? Always. You can always lose your backup. Like I said, a challenge for an enterprising gal....
Next time around, consider having a bootable external clone at hand for rainy days. I keep three myself...
P.S. Since I'll be in the Dallas-FW area in late June, I can volunteer with the confetti....

  • HT1338 My macBook pro i5 2.5 dual core screen in blinking, please help me out in this issue. I am using mac os x 10.8.2

I have bought new macbook pro 13.3" i5 2.5 dual core. I was working fine but suddenly when i restarted my macbook after a shutdown its screen started blinking or scattering type. But before shutdown it was working very fine, dont know what happened to it. Please help me out.

Try running the Apple Hardware test to see if it picks anything up:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11342
You can also try starting in the safe mode to see if the condition is the same. Booting in this mode takes a long time to start:

  • Macbook Pro 15" Retina Mid 2014 MOUSE/TRACKPAD LAG. PLEASE HELP!!

    Hello,
I just bought a new Macbook Pro OSX Yosemite this week. Retina, 15 inch, Mid 2014. 2.2 GHz i7. 16GB RAM. 256 GB HD. I've been noticing a lag when I use the trackpad and the bluetooth mighty mouse. It seems to happen completely randomly. If I don't use my computer for a long time and then start to use it again it sometimes lags for a second and then works, and then lags again, and on and on...
Sometimes the lags are 2 seconds long and sometimes they're less than 1 second long. It seems my mouse, trackpad AND keyboard are all affected by this problem. I'm pretty upset, seeing as how I paid over 2 grand for this computer. Does anybody have ANY idea at all what is causing this AND what I can do about it?? I'm not a huge computer guy.
The problem doesn't seem big enough to get a whole new computer. It seems like an Apple technician could fix this in 2 seconds. Wouldn't you agree? Please help. Thanks

I have similar problems with a much older system (a late 2008 MacBook Pro). In my case, the  problems with BlueTooth peripheral (mainly the Magic Mouse) are almost always associated with TimeMachine back-ups. This is a well known problem in the sense that I have seen posts about it going back to 2011, but I have never seen any specific solutions offered.

  • Macbook Pro's keyboard and trackpad aren't functioning well, please help, thank you!

Dear Apple Support and Apple Communities,
hopefully this question will be easily understood and will be answered with answers that can help, useful and beneficial. I will explain the problem, story that I guess began the problem, specs and information of the Notebook and so on.
I love products produced by the brand, Apple, but they can get broken, ruined or destroyed. So, I do try my best to take care of devices that I have well. Although, my father bought a Macbook Pro last year, around November or December, 2013(I THINK). I don't think it's very old, maybe 3 - 5 months, but it should be in a good condition. I have dropped it many times, hopefully that won't effect the problem. Now, the problem, the Notebook is a beautiful device that I would love to keep using, but I don't really know how to use it properly and in the CORRECT/RIGHT/GOOD/SAFE way. If possible, can you list methods/ways to do those things? If so, thank you! Anyway, back to the topic, the Notebook's keyboard has a problem, some keys aren't responding, especially the alphabets/letters, I guess some other keys worked because I did the PRAM RESET. Anyway, the trackpad is also not functioning well, sometimes, when I right click the trackpad or when I click the entire surface with one finger(RIGHT CLICK OR SOMETHING ELSE), it would left click, I found a way to fix is, put the Notebook to sleep by closing the cover, hopefully that's alright. Anyway, it all began, I guess, when I was brushing my teeth. I dislike to waste time, so I used the Notebook and brushed my teeth simultaneously. I guess Saliva was being produced because of the acidic substance(TOOTHPASTE)? Anyway, my mouth had a lot of liquid in it, could have been Saliva, water and toothpaste. So, Physics, natural forces, Gravitational force occurred, some of the liquid left my mouth and onto the keyboard. I didn't panic because I think I heard that keyboard could not or did not suck in a lot of liquid, but I did clean it up. Anyway, the Notebook including the keyboard and trackpad were functioning like normal. I guess after three hours, something happened to the Notebook. I think I was using Safari in FULLSCREEN MODE and suddenly an application or software for another application appeared. It was requesting permission for an update, I think. I updated it and suddenly, the Notebook went haywire. Probably not immediately, but I guess the Notebook did go haywire. I tried searching for ways to fix it, but not much could fix or solve the problem. Hopefully your answer-s will fix or solve the problem, thank you.

    INFORMATION
The Notebook has a few dents, I guess. I tried to open the keys to check for toothpaste or liquids. My brother told me that toothpaste is dense, probably the answer? My other brother told me that the keyboard and/or trackpad are/is "shocked"(LIQUID AND ELECTRICITY, NOT SUCH GOOD COMBINATIONS). Hopefully this is enough to be counted as detailed and informative. Thank you for your time! Take care!

Take it to an Apple Store for diagnosis and repair. This will not be free, dropping the Mac and dropping liquids on it are not covered by the warranty.

  • Safari on my MacBook Pro keeps quitting unexpectedly after a minute or so, please help!

Safari on one (and only one of my 3 user accounts) on my MacBook Pro keeps quitting unexpectedly after roughly a minute or so after launch.  I've tried everything from deleting com.apple.safari, deleting the app itself, installing the latest Java, and even trying FlashBack Removal (which told me I was clean).  Here's a copy of the report:

    Hi...
Try deleting the cache associated with Safari.
    Go to  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Try Safari.
If it crashes again, go to  ~/Library/Safari
Move the  WebpageIcons.db file from the Safari folder to the Trash.
    Try Safari.

    Hello t@singh
Check out the article below for your MacBook Pro running slow and slowing your productivity. Check Activity Monitor to see if your RAM is being used up and also check the hard drive using Disk Utility.
OS X Lion: If your Mac runs slowly

  • MacBook Pro Connecting to a Samsung TV HDMI trouble. Please help ^^

Hi, I have been trying to connect my Macbook Pro to my Samsung TV LE32B530P7W (HDTV) with a MINI DISPLAYPORT to HDMI adapter and then the HDMI cable to the TV, but nothing shows up on the TV (it says no signal), what should I do to make it work?? Do I need to change settings on the Mac? on the TV? Also, the Mac's screen flashes blue as if it recognizes an external screen but the tv says "no signal"....
I have also tried clicking on GatherWindows and Detect Display but nothing happens...
    please help XD

I've never heard of that brand, but I can tell you that the StarTech HDMI cable works fine on my 50" LG TV. Not all HDMI cables are created equal, and the HDMI spec is a moving target. When I connected mine, the MBP started flashing, looking for displays, and I switched the TV to that HDMI input while the MBP was looking. It sync'd perfectly. I've also got the genuine Apple DVI adapter, and got nothing on the same TV.
