15" Macbook Pro outershell repair

I do not doubt that I am the very first person to ask this question on this forum but I am looking to see what my options where to get my new laptop outer shell repaired. I had only owned my 15" Macbook Pro for three weeks and while I was at the airport my bag (that was supposed to protect my laptop) fell from a distance of 3 feet and now I have a nice dent that bugs me like crazy everytime I open my laptop. It fell off of the cart I was using to transport my luggage and my 94lbs German Shepherd. I failed to know like many people that Apple Protection Plan covers only hardware which is kind of dumb. I bet people have more problems with accidental damage than actual hardware issues. I know that may not be true but it would be nice it they offered something that would cover situations like this. I talked to a couple of people from Apple and they said to get insurance on something like this which I wouldnt even know how to. So I am stuck with a new laptop that has a nice dent. Paid an arm an a leg for this Macbook Pro and was hoping to have something worked out but from how everything is working out I am probably out of luck. The nice part is I was at the airport on my way to Romania where I now live for atleast a year or so so finding a place to repair it is out of the question. Mailing it back would be an option or even having a friend that is visiting can take it back with them but any help would be great. It is a anti glare screen too so that makes it more fun and interesting to repair. Thanks!

Some credit cards offer an insurance plan for items purchased with their respective cards.  See if that applies in your case.  If not, you may have a homeowners policy that may cover this situation.
Last option is to bite the bullet and have Apple or a repair facility do the restoration.  After that, its a replacement MBP.
Ciao.

my macbook pro was repaired and since then i can't get nor photoshop cs5 or bridge cs5 to initialize. a window appears that says it has initializing problems due to an icc profile issue.
there appear two error messages. the first one says that there has been a problem sincronizing because of a programme error. the second one appears after you clicked ok on the first window and says that photoshop couldn't be initialized because the icc profile is invalid.
does anyone know if i have to delete any system or photoshop preference? the illustrator is also having troubles. thanks

thanks! what finnally worked better was renaming the «settings» folder in te «color folder» in the library with ~before the name. now indesign is asking me for thw icc profiles but still works, so i asume i can reinstall color settings only for indesign and go on.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues -Feedback?

Anybody have any feedback from the MacBook Pro 2011 Repair Extension Program for Video Issues?
I had my early 2011 15 inch 8,2 repaired (free) under the extension program. The machine now appears to run well - but much hotter than before. The case is significantly hotter - especially at the GPU corner and the fans are constantly on moderate to high (not full). Anybody else experiencing similar changes?

  • Macbook pro retina repairable/replaceable parts ?

    Hello,
I have to replace 10 laptops for my company have to choose between classic or the new retina's macbookpro.
On one hand i like this new retina concept but i have to consider the worst case scenario.
What if a memory module or hard drive ssd module go wrong ? Or a simple fan inside the case ?
What exact parts can be replaced inside this laptop ?
If something goes wrong on this all-in-one motherboard, what is the price to replace it ?
    Thank you.

On a MacBook Pro with Retina display, everything is soldered onto the logic board except the flash storage. As a lot of parts are soldered, a logic board replace is very expensive, but we don't know the price exactly.
If you want to avoid problems, get AppleCare for each MacBook Pro, so repairs will be free during the first 4 years of your computer.
Although AppleCare is highly recommended, if you think you will have to replace parts of your MacBook Pro (remember that with a non-Retina MacBook Pro, you can replace the memory and the hard drive without voiding the warranty), buy a non-Retina MacBook Pro, cheaper and with replaceable parts

  • Cracked macbook pro screen repair

Accidentally stepped on my 13" macbook pro that was on the floor and it cracked the right side of my screen, how much would it cost to repair/replace?

Depends on whether you want new or used parts for replacement. I doubt repair is an option.  Google Mac screen replacement to get some numbers.

  • Why does my macbook pro keep repairing the same disc permissions

I am trying to figure out why my early 2008 macbook pro is lagging. I tried to repair disc permissions but it always repairs the same ones. The other thought I had was that the video card may be on its way out, but not sure how to check that.

Some of the messages that Disk Utility provides when repairing disk permissions are informational only, and not of consequence. See this Apple note on messages you can ignore: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
On your video card, run the Apple hardware test using the extended test, which will check out the video hardware.

  • Leopard on MacBook and MacBook Pro / running repair permissions

I upgraded both MacBook and MacBook Pro without major problems. I have been trying to repair permissions on the Mac Harddrive , and just get the spinning wheel. I have in the past run Onyx to perform routine maintenance tasks, but did not want to run any third party programs in relation to maintenance. Do I need to run it from the text tool disc? I never used to have to run it from disc.
    Thanks.
    Jon Pousette-Dart

I used Cocktail, Onyx, and YASU before Leopard, but had some problems with repairing disk permissions since upgrading to Leopard. Didn't know Cocktail had upgraded to Leopard. I'm impervious to snide remarks from self proclaimed experts.
We run a studio here north of NYC ( which is a standard ProTools HD Accel facility and won't touch Leopard for sometime) Leopard is on two laptops which seem to run good but slower since the Leopard upgrade. Might try the upgraded Cocktail.
As far as Beta Testors, That was the verbatim words out of level two Mac support. Their words not mine. Not one of the guys I talked to even planned on running Leopard on their own machines, as none of us in the pro community will either.
Having said that, it's on two of my laptops, just not the machines I run to do final mixes on.

  • MacBook pro retina repair/ replacement

Hi, basically I am experiencing problems with my macbook pro retina which I have only had for a few days. Unfortunately, when I turn on and off the laptop it takes a considerable amount of time to turn off (20-25 seconds), and the battery overheats quite quickly even though there is no software other than the default whereas my mum's takes about 2-3 seconds and she has quite a bit of software installed such as Logic Pro and final cut pro whereas I have nothing and I erased the memory and reinstalled the mac os x and still it is the same. My laptop still takes a long time to shut down and lags whilst on safari or YouTube. I am a bit disappointed as this is a new macbook and it is very slow in comparison with the other one and they have the exact same specs and are the macbook model. I think the harddrive could be faulty so would it do any harm to take it to a genius bar and see if they could either replace the ssd or the macbook?

I don't. My guess is they will first check it out to determine if it is repairable. Then they get an authorization from Apple for the repair. I don't know how long that may take. Furthermore, if there is already a queue of other repairs, then wait your turn. That could take more than a day in some cases. Not until they determine that it cannot be repaired would they replace it, and not until Apple authorizes a replacement.
I'm afraid I'm of little use to answering the question. You would be better off asking at the Apple store you go to.

  • Preparation for MacBook Pro 2011 repair

    Hi,
I have one of the MacBook Pros eligible for the repair programme.  It's got to the point where it won't boot at all. I'll be taking it for repair shortly.  My questions are these:
    1. I know Apple say to back up before taking it for repair, but does anyone know what the likelihood is of them wiping the hard drive?  It currently has Yosemite installed but not the latest 10.10.2.  Are they likely to install 10.10.2 as part of the repair, and if so can they do this without wiping the drive?
    2.  If I needed to back up this laptop, any suggestions for how I could do it (since it won't boot)?  Could I boot it in Target Disk mode and copy all the files to another machine?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Macbook pro 2011 repair extension

I have an early 15 inch macbook pro 2011 which has the same exact issue that the repair extension covers yet my serial number is not on the list.  Did Apple miss something?

What he is referring to, I suspect, is the same issue I encountered. I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013). The Repair Extension Program page lists that model. But it goes on to say "Use the "Check your Coverage" tool on the Apple Support site to determine if your MacBook Pro model matches the list of affected products below." Doing so yields the following results for my computer:
    Valid Purchase Date
    Telephone Technical Support: Expired
    Repairs and Service Coverage: Expired
This would seem to indicate my particular machine is not eligible. But, since it has been experiencing unexplained shutdowns (requiring a restart), I feel it should be. I found this thread while looking for more information.I suspect my only recourse is to take it in to an Apple store and hope I can convince them to repair it. Do you agree?

  • Macbook Pro replacement repair question

I wasnt sure where to ask this question so my apologies if it is miscategorized.
I have a MBP that has a bad screen an will be taking it to the genius bar tomorrow morning to get it fixed under apple care. The entire screen is going to need to be replaced. It has black spots all over it like the screen is separating or something.
    My question is:
Does anyone know how apple handles this sort of thing? Will they take it for a week or 2 and repair it or will they give me a replacement? Its about a year old Macbook Pro 2.33 Core 2 Duo. I ask because it really need it replaced for work and school but.. I cannot live without it. I use it everyday and really can't go without it for that long.
If you have had experience with this please share! I would like to know what to expect.
    Thank you in advance!

Experiences have run in both directions. I think it all hinges on which genius you speak to on which day. More often than not, with the age of your computer, you will need to send it in for repairs. They are more likely to swap a current model.

  • Macbook Pro Melted Its Own Casing - Expert eyes needed on this photo please of my macbook pro

    This is a 2008 15" Macbook Pro.
At the genius bar I pointed out that the computer was so hot I could barely hold it, so hot the computer had warped it's own plastic casing where it connects to the power source.
So the genius guy took it in the back, opened it up, diagnosed a fried logic board and said "For $310 we'll fix up anything in the computer, you'll get it back good as new."  In 2010 the logic board also fried and was replaced, and the heat cooling system was then replaced - looks like the same issue all over again.
So I took it home to get the data off the hard drive, but when I brought it back a few days ago, the new 'genius' made a different diagnosis.
Without barely looking at it, without taking it in the back, and without listening to or believing anything I told him, the Genius Bar are calling this impact damage - overriding the previous genius's assessment.
How can the perfectly symmetrical ripple wave in the plastic which goes top to bottom through a half inch of plastic be created by impact damage? And that the plastic piece below is not warped would mean I would have had to have removed the bottom piece of the computer, dropped it, then put it back on, in order for it to not be warped like its top half.
Are there any expert eyes out there who have an opinion on this keeping in mind the symptoms?
Additionally when the computer was its hottest, the trackpad would not click. The plastic must have expanded from the heat. So it would click, but only if I pressed really really hard. Doing this one day the plastic on the trackpad actually shattered from clicking it. But the shattering must have removed the surface pressure from the expanded plastic and therefore the trackpad became fully functional again in its shattered state and that's how I've been using it for quite some time.
I really appreciate any expert support from the community here if you disagree with the 2nd geniuses because I am complaining through official channels. I do not want to pay extra for damage the computer did to itself. Especially when this is the 2nd time the logic board fried on this computer.
I am someone who has owned apple's first everything since the 80's, and have worked on two Apple commercials myself. I'm currently typing this post from a PC... Does Apple want to satisfy its customers anymore or what?
I never did get a feeback solicitation emailed about this appointment either, I wonder why.

Each time I look at this post - the moderator has edited it again into something different than I said. Moderator, I'd prefer to remove this entirely if you are going to change the meaning of it. How do we do this? The above posts at 9:25a and 9:57a are not my language at all. And the moderator looks to have removed my ability to edit my post.
An update to the discussion (which I will repost separately when the moderator removes these ones which s/he's altered) - apparently this happened to other people as well - enough to bring a class action suit on apple forcing them to repair the issue:

    http://gigaom.com/apple/is-apple-blind-to-nvidia-related-macbook-pro-failures/
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2675881?start=60&tstart=0
The Beverly Center apple store handled this 1000% better than the 3rd Street Promenade Store did - just got back the Macbook Pro, entirely repaired for $310, just like the 1st genius as 3rd Street Promenade told me would/should happen, overruling the 2nd set of geniuses Adrian, Phillipe and Matt.
I tried the 866 customer support # at apple to tell them about my unpleasant experience with 3rd Street Apple, and was routed around in circles being on hold for 12 minutes at a time - got nowhere. They told me I could give feedback at apple.com/feeback - but this site offers nowhere to plug in unpleasant experiences with the genius bar - only allow one to complain about equipment. So despite all the phone calls I've made, my experience has gone unheard by apple.
Though I've twice paid $300 to have the fried logic board replaced on this computer, I am asking apple to reverse the charges due to the class action and known issue with the NVIDIA graphics card on these models.
Not only did they replace the casing (which was melted), they replaced the battery which was leaking and had expanded, replaced the fried logic board, and the fried CD player. Additonally, when using this computer before, I periodically felt little shocks to my wrists where my skin contacted the edge of the casing. And the computer was so hot I couldn't hold it. If these aren't heat/power issues, I don't know what are.

  • Macbook pro (early 2008): Trackpad not working under Windows XP

My Trackpad worked regularly under Windows (Bootcamp) and Mac OSx until some months ago my Motherboard had to be exchanged because of a fault function of the graphics card. When I started Macintosh after the Macbook pro was repaired the Trackpad worked regularly, but under windows the mouse didn't react to moving the finger or clicking. I reinstalled the drivers, but this didn't fix the problem.
What shall i do now? Thank you for any advices.

since my mac is year and two months old (funny, two months and you are screwed).
Not if you had of purchased Apple Care.  You would have been covered for 3 years.

  • Can't get external speakers to work using headphone jack on MacBook Pro

I have a male-male connector that I use for my iPod to radio or multimedia player to play on external speakers. When I plug it into my MacBook Pro, sound goes dead on the MacBook Pro, no sound comes out of the external speakers, and the preferences on the MacBok Pro say "Headphone : Headphone port" and volume is at full, and mute is off. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need a repair?  I unplug the cable and sound comes back.

No such problem, eww. The speakers were plugged in and working. I shut off the speakers, but did not unplug them, and when I turned them back on, there was no sound. I tried my headphones, and there was no sound from them, either. The headphone port was dead. I restarted, with no change.
I was getting ready to do an SMC reset and read the preliminary steps. The last one before resetting the SMC was to shut down the MacBook Pro. That brought the port back to life. When I restarted, I had my external speakers back.
    Go figure.
I have not upgraded to Lion because I have PowerPC apps that I want and/or need, so this was not a Lion-related bug. I am certainly glad the port isn't dead. I was not looking forward to having to send in my MacBook Pro for repair.
