15" MacBook Pro Power Adapter gets very hot.

I have a 15" MacBook Pro that I am using the older charger with the adapter from Apple.  The adapter is getting to a measured 137.9 degrees, a.k.a. HOT.  Anybody have any thoughts on this?

A lot of people report this. Try turning the connector 180 degrees and cleaning the terminals. Apparently that helps in most cases

Hot is normal for the charger but very hot is not. If it were mine It could be that your MBP is drawing too much current. I would take it to the Apple Store and have it checked out.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" Gets Very Hot

Hi, I noticed my Macbook Pro Retina 13" gets very hot after 30 minutes of usage, practically "burning" on my thigh (it left burning mark a few times actually, especially in the summer). I usually put a book between the laptop and me to prevent the heat. Is there a better way?

What are you doing on your MacBook when it gets hot? I have a retina and it gets hot when I play games like Team Fortress 2 or Garry's Mod, watching videos on youtube, and using the iTunes visualizer. What's odd is it doesn't get hot when I watch movies on iTunes. If it's getting hot just sitting around, you may have a problem that needs to be check out as soon as possible. I had a 13" mid 2012 non-retina pro that had three logic boards replaced in less than a year of purchase. Every time the board was failing, it would freeze sometime after it was put to sleep and it would get really hot and the fan would be screaming trying to keep up. Then it would freeze as I'm using it. The screen would flash pixels of all colors in random spots all around the screen. If Apple didn't cover the repairs, I would have paid $530 per repair.

  • Macbook pro, power supply is very hot?

macbook pro 15zoll with retina display, power supply is very hot! is this normal??

It depends on what you are doing.  Yes, the power supply can get hot.  This is normal.

  • The power adapter gets very hot.  Any suggestions?

The power adapter part that plugs into the computer gets very hot.  I have replaced the battery and replaced the power adapter.  It also has a hard time connecting and recharging the battery.  Is it possible to change out the plug in part in the computer and is it expensive?  Does it sound like this is what is needed to fix it?  Its about 3 years old.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • Macbook Pro Retina 15" Getting Very Hot

My macbook pro retina display 15 inch intel i7, 512gb flash hard drive 16 gb computer is getting hot. When playing a simple flash game like pocket planes (not in fullscreen), and without the battery plugged in, the computer gets to 64 degrees celsius, and the area near the battery plug location gets extremely hot to the touch. While playing youtube videos and such, the computer also gets hot, but generally reaches around 48 degrees, and it will not cool further. Is this normal? I just bought it 3 days ago and the salesperson told me that it would not get as hot as the 13 inch late 2012 macbook pro. Any ideas? Because it is very similar as heat, even though the older model was hotter.

I have the similar issue on my MBP 15" 2012. The top left corner area gets very hot after watch video for a little while.
I think it's the video card that is overheated. My current solution is to use a laptop cooler underneath my MBP. It does help reduce the lock ups in daily uses.
Does any one know how to fix it?

  • MacBook Air power adapter, getting extremely hot to the touch, is this normal?

Just purchased my MacBook Air 13", I'm very impressed with it but, I have one question. Is this power adapter supposed to be like this hot, I could fry an egg on it..
Just curious, maybe I need to return the supply for a new one? Is this condition normal?

    Hi TOWjr,
The power adapter will definitely get very warm if you're charging the battery at the same time that the machine is under high CPU/GPU load. So yes, it can be quite normal.
Try this... let the battery run low (sub 25%). Turn off the machine, connect it to AC power and let it fully recharge. During the recharge process (Amber LED) is it as warm, cooler or hotter than what you're experiencing now? After the recharge is done let it sit for about 30-45 minutes. Is it as warm, cooler or hotter?

Open up activity monitor and under all process, see how much dock is using.  highlight it and hit quit process.
since you're already at activity monitor, hit quit process on anything else using more than 10% of your CPU's resources.
see if your Retina runs cooler once you've done that.
    good luck.

You'll certainly need a new logic board.
If I were you, I would take the machine into your local Apple Store or an AASP and have them evaluate the problems and give you an estimate for repair. If you're out of warranty, be prepared to pay a very high price to get your computer repaired.
    Good luck,

  • AC adapter gets very hot

    I have a new Thinkpad Edge e530.
The adapter gets very hot when the battery is charging.  Not so hot that I can't hold it, but still, very hot.
    Relevant specs:
    * Adapter:  65 W
    * Battery:  "the bigger one" (6 cell LI Bat-75+,62WH)
    * Graphics:  integrated, not discrete
With the bigger battery, am I supposed to have the bigger (90 W) adapter?
Is the amount of heating I'm experiencing (very hot, but not too hot to touch) enough to be of concern?

    Hello dbuser!
Welcome to the Forums Community! How long have you experienced the A/C Adapter getting hot? Were you using a different battery before the 6 cell?
According the the e530 Personal Systems Reference the 65W Adapter is the correct adapter for the 6 cell battery. It is possible that you have a defective adapter. Does the adapter make any noise, buzzing or cracking sound? If it is making any noise there is a definete issue with the adapter you are using.

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.

  • My adapter getting very hot

hi everyone please help me...i have a one problem.During recharging my 60watt adapter is getting very hot. about 60celsuis.Is it normal?

If it is too hot to rest your hand on without injury, it's too hot. At about 60° C, that is certainly possible.
Try another power receptacle since poor utility power quality may affect the adapter's temperature rise. If it is still 60° C after trying a number of different power sources, have both your power adapter and the MacBook Pro evaluated by Apple.

  • Power supply get very hot!

I just bought a Pavilion dv6-6c35dx laptop and have noticed that the power supply gets really really hot, to the point that it scares me and I disconnect the laptop. Does anyone has the same problem?

Same problem here on my dv6-6c35dx.
I didn't know about the power cord recall, and I bought a new ac adapter, power cord and replaced the battery. No change, the adapter gets really hot, too hot using the 2 second rule! Experienced chefs use it to determine if a grill is hot enough by touching it for no more than 2 seconds.
I'm now putting it on a ceramic plate to make sure it doesn't smoke something when its charging. I hope HP knows this is a problem. Maybe the battery charging rate can be slowed and this may help.
