15'' Macbook Pro Retina vs 27'' iMac for college?

I'll be heading to college this fall, and I'm torn between getting a 15'' macbook pro (retina model) or a 27'' iMac. I've been a long time mac user and absolutely love Mac OS X, but I can't decide between having the portability of a macbook pro or the huge screen size and power of an iMac (I've been assured that the 27'' will fit in a dorm room, so that's not an issue). I'll be majoring in physics, so I'm not sure if I'll need a super-powerful computer, but it'd be nice to have one anyway.
(A side-note to the portability problem: I was thinking of just using my current 2008 macbook as an 'in-class notebook' or just buying an ipad and a bluetooth keyboard.)
Any suggestions would be very greatly appreciated!
Thanks

If you have a 2008 MBP, do use that for class and purchase the iMac.  You get a lot more performance for your money with an iMac than you will purchasing a retina.  For me, this falls in the 'no brainer' category.
It simply comes down to how powerful you think you may need to make it.  Contact your school and get the details of what will be required and outfit the iMac accordingly.  Note that you may have to install Windows which is another plus for the iMac.
Ciao.

  • My macbook pro retina 2014 has crashed for the 2nd time in 2 mo

My macbook pro retina 2014 has crashed for the 2nd time in 2 months. Can't get past the gray/apple screen.  The first time the genius bar tried all the different tricks to get it to boot all the way through, but in the end had to reinstall mavericks.  They said there weren't any indications of it being a hardware issue after running diagnostics.  The only possible reason is that it has something to do with some ProTools 10 plugins which I had downloaded in both occasions less than a week before.  I don't believe that would be the issue and I'm guessing it's a hardware issue at this point.  It's still under a factory warranty, so I'm not too concerned.  Thoughts?

    Try SMC and PRAM resets:

If no success, try booting into the recovery partition and select Disk Utility from the 4 option menu.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
    Any Change?

  • MacBook Pro Retina? Or iMac?

I'm starting online classes for my university, I will be doing online classes for two to three semesters to rack up scholarship money and then transfer to a university up here(my family just moved from NC to AK for job opportunities and I came with). I can afford either of these laptops, but I'd like not to spend a ton of money.
I need my computer to handle gaming, web surfing, a TON of Skype(like 6+ hours of Skype a day), streaming, etc.
I typically do a lot at the same time, an example is, I'll be on Skype, playing a game with them through Steam. I need something that can handle all of that.
I don't want a 27" iMac because I believe that's too big and I don't need a screen that big. So I'd be deciding between the 21.5" and either of the MacBook Pro Retina models. I currently have a 13" MacBook the aluminum model and it's really hard doing all of this. I can't play certain games and Skype at the same time without the game lagging extremely bad. I do like the portable aspect of the Retina and I will eventually end up going to actually class and it would be nice to be able to bring everything with me at once. But if I get the iMac I would keep my MacBook instead of giving it to my parents and have both a desktop and a laptop. If I got the Retina I would give the MacBook to my parents to use and when my brother graduates from college in two years the MacBook would be my present to him. It's in amazing shape and would save him a ton of money!
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!
    Thank you!

Hi, I am from Hong Kong. I have bought a customerized late-2012 iMac 27", but it hasn't been to my home yet
For your case, you will use it for school and games mainly, but not video editing or graphic designing, right? Therefore, I suggest you for buying iMac 21.5" with high sepc one with the following reasons:
First, you have a laptop - MacBook Pro already. Even though you said if you bought RMBP, you would give the old one to your parents, why don't you try to have a Mac desktop - iMac at home? (MacBook Pro+iMac = GREAT !!) That's my personal formula.
Second, although Retina MacBook Pro has a awesome display, please be reminded some games may not support with such a high pixel screen. Thus, the performance may work poorly. On the other hand, for iMac 21.5", it has a 1920x1080 screen, which is suitable for most of the game. Unless you want to learn video editing, photo editing and graphic designing, I won't recommend RMBP to you.
Last but not least, comparing the storage parts, all RMBP models use SSD for storage, but iMac use SATA or Fushion Drive only. It seems RMBP is better than iMac. However, when you consider the minimum volume of iMac, it is 1TB for both SATA or Fushion Drive, which is much greater than the RMBPs with at most 512GB SSD. As a game player, you may download several large-file games, says 2GB to 20GB. A larger volume harddisk will be better. What's more, if you choose the Apple's new technology-Fushion Drive, you will experience the efficiency of opening Apps or Games.

I got a macbook pro retina and I installed windows 7. How can I get the windows 7 drivers for the Macbook Pro Retina?

Read the Boot Camp Instructions, you have to download the drivers using Boot Camp Assistant
If you missed that I suggest that you read the instructions again.

  • MacBook Pro Retina 13" or 15" for grad school and which storage size?

Hi everyone! I'm new to forums but was hoping I could get some help. I'm in the market for a MacBook Pro retina, but am having trouble deciding on both screen and storage size. I am currently leaning toward the 15" 256mb. I will be using it for graduate school, mostly for word processing/ppt but a little bit of photo editing (using Photoshop). I don't store many videos or music and tend to store pictures on an external hard drive. The reason I thought I wanted the 15" is because I like to have 2 windows open at one time side by side, so I figured the 13" would be too small for this. I have an iPad 2 that I would probably use for class and note taking, but I may end up using my laptop so I can use Microsoft word-- that's where weight and portability will come in to play and is the reason why I am still considering the 13". As for the 15" I'm open to upgrading to the 500mb but don't know if this is really needed. I would really appreciate any insight, especially from students using one of these notebooks for class. Thank you!

"The reason I thought I wanted the 15" is because I like to have 2 windows open at one time side by side, so I figured the 13" would be too small for this. "
Apple's "Mission Control" feature allows you to open multiple desktops at once for the very reason you mention. You could have one window open in one and a second open in another. The trackpad additionally allows you to quickly switch from one desktop to another with a swipe of your fingers. This may not be preferable if you would still like to have all your open windows on one screen, but you quickly get used to the feature and once you utilize it, it turns out to be very beneficial and allows you to work with many open windows in an efficient manner.

  • Using Macbook Pro Retina with 2011 iMac

  • New MacBook Pro Retina or 27" iMac

I currently own a mid-2009 MacBook Pro and I'm considering an upgrade here in the near future.
I really like the look and feel of the 13" MacBook Pro Retina. But since I already own a MacBook Pro (even though its older) I'm somewhat considering a new 27" iMac.
Just looking to see what other people think would be the better choice.
    Thanks

Exactly... I love the portability of my MBP, but already own one (even though it may be older and slower)
Should I give up hope on ever seeing a retina iMac? Im sure they would be crazy expensive either way. haha

  • MacBook Pro retina 13" vs iMac 21.5" 2011

When thinking of buying a Mac, I always wanted to have one for my desktop. So I always consider an iMac, but my last birthday present was a MacBook Pro 13" retina. I'm very pleased with it, I enjoy the retina display, the USB 3.0 for my external drive, HDMI in my TV, and the trackpad. But last week me and my girlfriend broke up and had a major fight, somehow in the middle of the battle the MacBook got damage. It is a bit bended in two corners and the display have a little crack, but doesn't affect the image in the screen. It's painful for me to look at it with those two details and someone offered me the option of trade it for an 21.5" iMac 2011. I'm very confused, I know I would miss the MacBook retina features, but also pleased with the larger display, of the iMac.
I would like to hear some opinions, it will be very helpful. (Hope I made my self clear with this situation)

    marianofromfl,
your least expensive option would be to purchase a bus-powered external disk with a USB 3.0 port to use with your Mid 2012 MacBook Air; some examples can be seen here.
What sorts of school and creative work are driving your desire for increased performance?

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" vs 15" for uni?

I am a university student and want to move over to a MacBook Pro.
I have been working on a 15.6" Windows laptop for about 4 years and prior to that a 17" monitor. I do a lot of work on my laptop; I use it to read journal articles, research and typing out papers and tutorials etc daily. Apart from that I use my laptop as my tv i.e. I watch all my series and movies on my laptop. I must spend on average 9 hrs + on my laptop a day. Added to this my eyesight isn't fantastic. I do not take my laptop with me to campus regularly as I have an iPad and all my notes sync with my Windows laptop (through Microsoft OneNote), so weight is not really an issue.
With the above in consideration, what screen size would be suitable? Deciding on the screen size is my main issue.
Help with this would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

The best way to approach this is to visit an Apple store and look at the displays yourself.  What others like or say may be very different from your preferences and they cannot reproduce you eyesight.
Obviously the larger the display the better,  But do look at the 13" Macbook Air.  It is very light and the battery run time is far superior to the Macbook Pros.  In my opinion it is the ideal collegiate notebook. (unless one is enrolled in a very technical/scientific program)
    Ciao.

  • Would a Macbook Pro Retina 13" be alright for programming?

    Hello,
I just had a few questions regarding the macbook listed above. i am a electrical engineering major, and need to decide on a new macbook to take to class with me. I have had my eyes set on a macbook pro 13" for a while, but need some conformations on the power it has.
If i were to say, fully upgrade it to the i7, with 16 gigs of ram and a 500gb ssd, would it be capible of doing the following:
-heavy cadsoft eagle work, and i mean heavy
-moderate-heavy programming in Java and C++
-light gaming, such as wow 25m rading or farming legendaries in diablo 3
    -note taking
please reply as soon as possible, as i am runing out on my window of oppertunity.

I would contact a faculty member in the electrical engineering department.  They will know best.

  • Why does my macbook pro retina take 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid?

For some reason it takes my macbook like 30 seconds for me to use it when i open the lid.  I cant move the mouse or anything until like 30 seconds go by is that normal or something wrong?  Its the new macbook retina display and never had this problem when i first got it.

Are you running any applications when you open the lid, specifically any applications that are heavy on GPU usage such as iMovie or Photoshop?

  • Macbook Pro Retina 13" vs iMac

So right now I have a 2012 Macbook Air baseline model, I am running out of space and desperately need an upgrade for performance for school and creative work. I also have a baseline 2011 iMac and I am starting to feel the need for more speed. I was thinking about selling both and get a 13" rMBP with the following specs:
    2.8GHz Dual Core
    16Gb RAM
    256Gb SSD
I will also consider waiting until the 2014 revisions are out and I REALLY hope they smack a quad core in that rMBP
Thanks, id love to hear your advice and thanks in advance.

  • Mac mini or macbook pro retina or imac??

hey guys.... i need your help... i am about to get a mac but i dont know which..... my question is should i buy a mac mini, macbook pro retina 13'' or imac 21.5''??? thx!!!

I appreciate all the responses.  I don't do anything graphic heavy on my computer, although at the same time, I've never had a computer powerful enough to run those types of programs.  I also use a console for games, but that could change if I had a computer powerful enough to run things smoothly.  It is disappointing that the hardware found in the current offerings is much more highly priced than many competitors.  However, I'm not a fan of Windows, and I do realize that with Apple's price premium you get great customer service and the ability to bring a malfunctioning computer directly to an Apple store with results that are, on the whole, much better than you would find at a 3rd party repair service for PCs.  I also find Apple's OS grossly headache free with a very nice user experience.  I'll see what changes may be made soon to the aforementioned devices and I guess I'll go from there.  Although I could swing for a rMBP in 15 inch, and typically use computers for years and years before replacing, if I can save money, I always go for that option.

You did not remove your Windows partition correctly. You need to remove it using Boot Camp Assistant. If you cannot then you will need to repartition the entire drive back to a single partition/volume.
