15" MacBook Pro Unibody Replacement

I dropped my MacBook Pro today and the unibody assembly/casing is dented.  Does anyone know of a good parts store for replacement parts?
Thanks.

Yes, it is purely cosmetic.  My MBP appears to be functioning properly otherwise.  I have looked everywhere online to price the parts with no success.

  • I'm looking for screws for the bottom of my macbook pro unibody.

I need screws for the bottom of my macbook pro unibody. They started falling out after I upgraded my RAM, apparently they had some type of threadlock on them. Apple was of little help and directed me to a an apple store or service center which is not convienent. So far, I've been only able to find the 'old' pack of 5 screws, not the pack of 10 that my mac requires. I did find one seller on ebay advertising them but would like to avoid that path if possible. Any help in this matter will be greatly appreaciated. Thanks

No this is not a common problem.  Have you had the bottom off before?
The factory set screws you see a bit if blue lock tight which makes it more difficult the first time out.
They can replace the screws over the counter at any authorized repair service or Genius bar:

  • MacBook Pro Unibody (late 2008) crash when using GeForce 9600M GT

Every time I do heavy 3D rendering or play 3D games (such World of Warcraft) with the NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT, after few minutes my MacBook Pro (unibody, late 2008) freezes, black screen and audio looping, no actions possibile, only hard shutdown... No problems with the 9400M.
What should I do? Get a replacement?

I've had mine for a little less than two months and I noticed the overheating shortly after I got it. I think it's mostly because the fans don't spin up soon enough because the SMC controller on mine does not work properly and even if you reset it, it reverts back to only spinning the fans after a cpu/gpu temps over 90 degrees Celsius (almost boiling point!).
Mine is currently in for service but I'm being told that they haven't been able to duplicate the issue so I don't understand what method of testing they are using. I hope they don't keep my computer in repair for a long time. I know that if I fire up the Black & White 2 Demo, Call of Duty 4, or Spore and play for about 10-20 minutes the computer crashes if the fans don't spin up... Apple released a firmware update for the SMC controller but it doesn't apply to my model which is a MacBookPro 5,1 , maybe Apple doesn't realize yet how widespread the fan problem even on the late 2008 model is but it needs to be resolved and a third party utility to control the fans should not be necessary on the finest laptops available on the market. I'm confident that they will come up with something...

  • Can you swap an SSD from a MacBook pro C2Duo to an MacBook pro unibody

I have a very trusty 17" MacBook pro core 2 duo that's due for an upgrade. Is it possible to swap my current SSD from my MBP C2D to my new 17" MacBook pro unibody? Im thinking there might be a problem with drivers? It will save me a lot of hassle trying to reinstall all of my pro apps particularly FCP. If it comes to it I'll have to do a fresh install.
    Thanks for any help

You have to install either the current OS that you were using on the new Mac or the version that Came on that new Mac when it was new. Not the OS that was on the drive when it was installed in the older Mac.
If Lion was the pre-installed OS on the new Mac that is what you have to install and there is only one way to do that. That is do use the Lion recovery system to Download Lion from the internet and then install it. Holding down the c key (or Command+c key) would do it.

A 2008 Mac won't have originally shipped with Lion. You need to install 10.6.8 on the computer, log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to purchase Mountain Lion, click on the Purchases tab, and download it.

    Quit System Preferences and delete...
    Users/yourname/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist

  • ACD 30" Dual Link DVI and MacBook Pro Unibody

    I have the following configuration:
ACD 30" Dual Link DVI and MacBook Pro Unibody
I am exhibiting some intermittent problems with the 30" display not coming up when I reboot for example and here are some more:
    1. MacBook Pro not in clam-shell mode and restart equals 30" display not turning on
    2. When in Snow Leopard and I have the MacBook Pro running in clam-shell mode and I open the display on the MacBook Pro it remains black.
    3. When waking the MacBook Pro from sleeping (MacBook Pro in clam-shell) the 30" ACD is "grainy" and the display is not usable and it requires a reboot to solve the problem.
Any help? In addition are there any other displays using mini-display port to mini display port technology?
What about a different monitor; will I still have to use the Dual Link DVI adapter to drive a display with higher than 1920x1200 resolution?
Are there adapters to go from mini-display port to display port?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Just came across your post and i have a couple of suggestions ive noticed with the Dual-Link to Mini-DP with the same configuration.
When working in clamshell mode for example, the 30" will become the MAIN/Default display...So if you open your macbookpro while the 30" is on and the system is running, the screen will remain black because it is in closed mode; basically meaning there is no signal to be sent.
so if you want the display to show up, either restart or put into sleep mode, then wake the system WITH THE LID OPEN.
As for the grainy/static artifacts, its beena reported issue since day 1, not sure waht the fix or issue may be with it but heres a resolution.
Press; SHIFT CONTROL EJECT-KEY all at once, this will disable signal to the monitor, but not shut off the machine...then use your mouse or press a key on the keyboard to wake the display and the grainyness should disappear.

  • How to Charge Macbook pro unibody? correct way

Hi there, I have a question. just bought my Macbook pro unibody last week.
I want to know how to charge Macbook pro the correct way ?
When im working. should I charge all the time ? I should wait until the battery drain 10% left ?
When is the best time to charge the battery 75%,50% or less that 10% ?
Should I turn off asap when the charger once the green light turn on ? should I leave overcharge ? normally I charged mac at night which more than 8 hour charge , is this good ?
    Thanks guys.

Here is apple's instructions in calibrating the battery KB Article
As for leaving it plugged in, that's the normal process most people do, there is circuitry in the computer to ensure the battery does not get over charged. Aside from calibrating it, I'd avoid any deep cycles, that is draining it completely, you're better off plugging it in when you have the opportunity and not wait until the battery is nearly drained. Deep cycles can shorten the life span of the battery.

  • Cannot Daisy Chain My External Hard Drives on Macbook Pro Unibody

I have a 2010 Macbook Pro 13.3.  I am trying to daisy chain my 2 external hard drive enclosures to my firewire 800 port.  The enclosures are manufactured by Vantec, model Nextar 3.  Both devices have 2 firewire 400/800 ports and they advertise that they are able to be daisy chained.
My issue is:  I hook one to the other and power them both on and nothing seems to happen.  I can power one up and the drive will show up on my desktop, but when I power the second drive up, I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and then the drive is gone.  I have tried connecting them several different ways.  Im not sure if its the external enclosures, if there is a process I'm supposed to follow, of if the Macbook Pro Unibody does not support daisy chaining firewire 800 devices.
Please, if anybody has had the same experience and has been able to fix it, let me know.  I am in need of some serious hard drive spance and am going to return both enclosures if I cannot get them to work.
    Thank you.

    I'm having the same issue.
I'v also found that I am able to daisy chain other drives throught the vantec drives.
And that, when  I get the pop up screen saying I have disconnected my device without properly shutting it down, and the drive is gone. I'm only able to remount the drive after restarting the computer while the drive is conected and powered. It won't apear on other computers untill the reboot sequence is preformed.
    Strange,
Let me knwo if you've found a solution.
    thanks,
    joe

  • Logic Pro, MacBook Pro (unibody) and M-Audio Midiman Midisport 8x8/s

Can anyone tell if if they have gotten Logic Pro running on a MacBook Pro (unibody) to work with the M-Audio Midiman Midisport 8x8/s MIDI interface? I can't seem to get AMS to see the interface.
If I boot into Vista using bootcamp, it works fine.
If I plug the interface into a PC first and then move it to the Mac without power cycling it, it works fine until I cycle power on the interface or the Mac.
Should I give up and buy a different multiport MIDI interface? If so, which one works best?
    thanks,

  • Reinstal Mac OS X, iWork09, iLife09 on Late 2008 Macbook Pro unibody ques?!

Alright so I've got a quick question for you knowledgeable people, I've got a late 2008 macbook pro unibody and has unfortunately installed some crap on my hard drive since i got it, and i want to be just like i got it out of the box. I want to delete everything off my hard drive, like completely erase, do I do that using the disk utility application or could i erase it completely with the mac OS X install disk that came with my mac? That's the specs of my harddrive(Hitachi Media Total Capacity : 232.9 GB (250,059,350,016 Bytes). When I reinstall my mac OS X, I will be waiting for Snow leopard (because its only $30 bucks if an upgrade), since they say the footprint of that O.S. will be considerably smaller that os x. but before i install snow leopard i want to reinstall my iwork and iLife programs, which are both 09. This leads to the next question that i have, my mac shipped with iLife and iWork 08 and I bought versions 09 after. They are single licenses and I want to know if I will be able to reinstall iWork09 and iLife09 after my reinstall of OS X without buying them again.
Thanks for any help in advance.;)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Here's an article on Installation options:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1545?viewlocale=en_US
It should give you clear instructions on how to proceed. You will boot from your install disc to do the Erase and Install. To erase the boot drive, you will use the Disk Utility that is on your install disc.
You have the iLife 09 and the iWork 09 discs? Then you should be able to reinstall them from the discs after installing the OS. The single license means that you are licensed to use them on only one computer at a time.
Be sure to make a good backup of anything you want to keep before erasing your drive and reinstalling the OS.
Incidentally, you can save a few GB's of space if you do a custom installation and eliminate any languages and printer drivers you won't ever use.
    Good luck!

  • Late 2008 MacBook Pro unibody - Hard Freezes under Vista 32bit

    Hi folks,
I am a relatively new Mac fan (started a few years ago when I purchased a Mac Mini for home because I didn't want to suffer Windows at home as well as at work!)
Anyhoo, late last year I purchased a MacBook Pro Unibody jobbie so that I could have the best of both worlds for my work. I can run Visual Studio under Vista for C++ development under boot-camp and run the Mac and OSX for just about everything else.
However: I have a problem that is testing my patience to brand new levels. In summary:
About once every couple of hours or so (and it's not reliable: could be after 30 seconds, could last several hours) Vista freezes. And I mean freeze: it takes a "hold the power button down" routine to get out of it. This, of course, has made Vista and lots of my work pretty upset. There's nothing quite like writing to a file when this happens for maximum tears. I'm running through tissues like you'd never believe
I have done some research on this over the months and have tried many possible solutions including, but not limited to, ensuring that I'm fully patched up and that there is no suspicious software, updating all the drivers (paying particular attention to NVIDIA's ones - as a DirectX/OpenGL programmer for the past 10 years I'm acutely aware of how touchy they are). None of these have worked.
The closest I've come to something that looks like a solution is this thingie called Riva Tuner; but it does not recognise the April 2009 NVIDIA drivers.
I understand that it could be linked with something NVIDIA's drivers do to speed up/slow down the cards depending on load/heat/whatever.
I'm so far down my tether at this point I really do not know where to turn. I love my MacBook, but I need Bootcamp and Vista to do my job. It was my choice to get a Mac rather than a PC, so I guess it's my own fault. I have seen many other users on the Internet who have the same problem but none of them appears to have a fool-proof resolution to this issue.
Thus, I thought I'd come here, get my best begging trousers on and grovel to Apple and to the learned users here to see if there is something that I can do to get everything working again so that I can continue to bask in the MacBook Pro glory knowing that my Vista installation is reliable.
    Grovelling over,
    Mr Cuttle.

Do you have anything against running Windows in a VM (virtual machine) under OSX to do your work? On the unibody, this is much more stable than boot camp in my experience.
here are the steps I took
    1) install smcfancontrol in OSX
    http://www.eidac.de/
    2) install virtualbox free virtualization software from Sun Microsystems
    http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/2.2.2/VirtualBox-2.2.2-46594-OSX.dmg
    3) install Windows using virtualbox like normal; use smcfancontrol to bump fan speeds if it runs hot (normally not needed unless you watch video or game).
    4) turn on seamless mode and run your windows apps side by side with OSX apps for free.
if you have issues setting it up, read here:
    http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/UserManual.html
this video shows how it works, albeit with a weird Japanese game app instead of Visual C++
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z47MKa9Jdwk
and this screenshot that I took shows just how much you can do with this:
