15'' MBP + M4 SSD + Kernel Panics + Data Doubler = dead end
Hey there,
I've been dealing with an issue since the snow leopard days, and it got worse sometime in Mountain Lion. 2.66 GHz i7 w/ 8GB DDR.
A brief history: In January 2013 I replaced the main HD on my MBP with a 500GB Crucial M4 SSD. I simultaneously upgraded to 8GB of Crucial DDRAM.
For a year or so everything ran at blazing speeds: I use Ableton Live for music production and use many plug-ins along with it, so CPU load has been pushed more than once, never to any place that was immediately fatal. Slowly, with increasing frequency, I began to experience unpredictable kernel panics. Once a month at first, then twice, then once a week, etc. Usually they would happen while doing something low-CPU such as browsing the internet with few or no apps open besides my browser. By September 2014, I t was happening multiple times per day. A colleague suggested moving my SSD to a data doubler and putting the original HD back in the place it started.
Trusting this colleague and some light reading, I ordered an OWC data doubler and installed it. Per "about this mac -> system report," the doubler is properly installed: under "SATA/SATA Express" there are two "Intel 5 Series Chipset" drop downs (see pics). I've tried several HDs and the SSD in the doubler to no avail, and all the same hard drives do show up in the original SATA port (pics demonstrate). In no case can I find the doubler's drive in Disk Utility or in Recovery mode. The most interesting next step I have heard is to open the BIOS (i.e. firmware, right?) and tell my laptop to look for the SSD in the second SATA port. Any ideas?
Other mentionables:
-The kernel panics only occur with the SSD in the main HD port, even after formatting. Booting from Original HD or external HD do not experience these issues
-The SSD is SATA III and both my laptop's connections are SATA II; I don't think that's an issue as the M4 can operate at 3gb / s and does so in the main HD bay
-I haven't done any RAM-isolating trouble shooting, though as mentioned the kernel panics only happen with the SSD in the main HD bay
Thank you so much for any energy you put into my issue.
All the best,
Kevin
As (bad) luck would have it, I don't have the discs that came with the machine . Isn't that always the way?
At any rate, I figured that would be a suggestion and searched the web for looking to see if what I need (AHT) could possibly be downloaded. Looks like some folks have found a way/location to download AHT from the web from some of the posts I've seen, but I've come up empty handed.

2011 MBP with odd Kernel Panic?
Hey guys, my system had a weird kernel panic that I've been searching for solutions on and finding little. In the quest to NOT have to take it to Apple, I thought I'd ask the wise minds of NBR if they might have an idea what could have caused the following panic:

=============================
Open, running applications: Mail, Fidelia (music), Firefox, Reeder, Dreamweaver, Photoshop. At the time of the freeze, the display was put to sleep via Expose active corner. When I tried to move the mouse to wake the display again, nothing happened and I heard the song that was playing in Fidelia stuttering in place. FWIW, I've put my laptop to sleep this same way with these same applications running regularly for 6 consecutive days without any issues. That would make it extremely hard to reproduce.
I find it odd that the IOStorageFamily extension may be involved. The only thing plugged into USB was my bluetooth headset, which was charging. It is not synchronized with the laptop...it was just charging. The mention of WindowServer is less surprising, as I've read that Expose/Spaces usage can impact that.
It's possible that the parallels kexts or paragon kext are related...but really, those are the same drivers I used for almost a year on my 2010 MBP without ever experiencing this kind of issue. And Parallels was not running either. Paragon NTFS is always running.
I'm really pretty new to this kind of trouble-shooting, so if anyone has thoughts or input, it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!Ok, so I ran the Apple Hardware Test (I needed to press and hold Option (alt) + D on startup, not ONLY D, which the apple KB stated) and the result was pretty clear:
"AHT found the following problem: 4MEM/60/40000000: 0x8329b798"
According to other discussions on the forum, this is, as Linc Davis stated, a problem with the RAM.
So, how do I reinstall the original RAM? Is this something that you can do by yourself? My Apple Care has expired, but I might have som guarantee left from the store where I bought my computer.
Thanks for the help! -
New mbp, just got kernel panic. Should I be concerned?
Hi everyone,
I got my mbp last month.
It's a 15" i7 I have it updated completely, OS X version 10.6.8
I just got the kernel panic. I looked online and learned that this shouldn't be a problem as long as this doesn't happen again within a couple weeks. Still, I am a bit freaked. Should I really not be concerned? I mean.. my mac basically just crashed...and it's pretty new...
I have read apple's pages about the kernel panic but I wanted to ask you mac-users.
By the way, the crash happened while I had skype, firefox and itunes running. In addition, I went to check the log of the kernel panic. And all I could find was a crash report: "iTunes_2011_6_28 [...] macbook pro crash" Maybe iTunes caused it?...even though today's date is 7/10/2011 and not 6/28/2011?
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Karen
P.S. - Sorry if there was a thread/discussion already on this. I know it's annoying to be repetitiveah thankyou. I was going to say, I feel like I'm being incredibly stupid. (proves how noobish I am to mac)
Alrighty, so here is what I find. Will this be of any help to figuring out the problem? Or should I just not worry?
(Thanks for correcting me. haha)

MBP Mid2010 with kernel panics, passed video tests
I have a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro that I tried to upgrade to OSX 10.8 in the fall of 2012, but the system was very unstable with kernel panics. I took it to the Apple store and they couldn't find anything wrong, so I reverted back to 10.6. I attempted again to upgrade to 10.8 in Feb and this time the install proved stable. Things ran great until 10.8.4 was pushed and the system has been unstable since. I heard of the issue with the graphics switching and took it to an Apple store again to have it tested, but the machine passed the video test. It was recommended that I try to do a clean install of the OS and see if a particular piece of software was causing the issue. I complied and completely wiped the drive and installed 10.8.4 fresh, but I had kernel panics within a few minutes after the system was installed. I have had over 80 KP in the last month and have no idea what direction to go. I have run Rember memory scan, which returned no issues with the memory. Any help would be appreciated.

<Edited By Host>That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed. -
10.7.3 update on SSD, kernel panic
I had my OS and applications installed on SSD drive of my iMac. After updating to 10.7.3 via updater and rebooting, kernel panic occured. The message is something like "unable to find driver for this platform". I then tried to restore from TimeMachine, same message. Doing the update with Combo package, same thing.
I installed the latest OS on my rotational drive with no problem (and that's how I can report this!) but even clean install of the OS on the SSD gives me the same kernel panic with the same message on reboot.
I don't think SSD is the problem because I installed Snow Leopard off my install DVD with no problem. But Lion causes kernel panic every time, with no possibility to restore from TimeMachine.
iMac 27, 2.93 GHz Intel Core i7 x 4, 16 GB 13333 MHz DDR3, 251 GB SSD + 2 TB RotationalI installed Snow Leopard off my installer DVD. If I now install Mac OS I purchased from App Store (obviously not the update package), do I get kernel panic again?

2008 MBP Keyboard Issues + Kernel Panics?
The issue I am having basically boils down to this: the caps lock light begins flickering, and then the whole keyboard goes wonky (phantom strokes, repeated strokes, etc). Often this ends in a kernel panic (I will post a log later) . D:
Now the history behind all of this (and I can't say which parts are entirely relevant, so some of this may be unrelated computer bizarre-ness):
Got my MBP in August 2008, having never owned a mac before. The first tissue I recall having was within a month of getting the computer--the entire screen got blocky and jumbled, like tv static, and the computer froze. Called tech support, and they had me reset the PRAM, which resolved the issue. A couple of months after that, my keyboard/trackpad started failing to work--my cursor would outright disappear off the screen, and the computer would not respond to keyboard presses or trackpad use. A USB tablet still functioned properly. The condition would be fixed by a restart, but would re-occur fairly often. I saw the genius bar several times over the issue, and each time they sort of ignored the issue (maybe they didn't believe me? I don't know). Finally after a little over a year of this I finally got the problem to reproduce in-store--and immediately they recommended hardware repairs. This also, incidentally, is when I found out that my Applecare had not been registered correctly, so I was showing up out of warranty. Awesome.
At the same time, I was having really bizarro crashes--the computer (plugged in) would wake itself up from sleep, eject a cd, and then completely shut down ALL ON ITS OWN. Then it wouldn't start up again unless I reset the PRAM. No idea what that's about.
So I fight with them for a couple months about the Applecare thing, and finally they agree that they'll do the repair if I bring in the box. So at this point they replace the keyboard, top case assembly, and the entire top screen part (since I had a couple of dead pixels). Everthing works great... for a couple months. Then the issue of the flickery caps lock/screwy keyboard/kernel panics start. I never had a kernel panic before the repair. So I take it in again, and they replace the keyboard again. And again, it works fine... for a couple of months. Then the weirdness starts again.
So this last time, I take it in, describle all the crashes and the keyboard problem and show the kernel logs, and the genius bar suggests that it may be the logic board. I'm still showing up out of warranty, so she takes the box, and in roughly 60 seconds, gets my warranty to show up. You could probably hear my jaw hit the floor--why hadn't anyone done this the last umpteen times I'd brought the darn thing in?? But anywho, she does a hardware test on my computer, and concludes that something IS up with the logic board--whenever she tries to test it, it just hangs indefinitely. She was also worried about bad ram, so we replace that too. And for good measure, the keyboard/top case again. In addition, they wipe the computer and do a clean install.
This was 4 weeks ago. I haven't put any of my applications and whatnot back on, and suddenly about a week ago the problems started again. What in the world could be causing this??? My Applecare expires in August, and honestly, I feel like if they can't get this fixed before then, My computer should be replaced under warranty (I don't doubt that they are doing their best to fix it, but I can tell they are playing pin the tail on the donkey here, and the thing's been abnormal since day one). Thoughts, anyone?o.jens wrote:
I'm still lost as to why the monitor is causing panics. Any ideas on that.
No. You might contact the technical staff of the monitors manufacturer for assistance.

My mid 2010 MBP is having kernel panic issues.
I am at my wit's end with this darn machine. I have sent my MBP to both Mac Authority and Apple's Genious Bar. Mac Authority couldn't tell me anything.
After several HD reformats and OS reinstalls the thing will kernel panic when I do anything like use expose, launchpad, even while I'm just browsing through my documents. After several hours of diagnostics, Apple said I had a bad HD cable and replaced it. Although it passed their stress tests, the problem still persists.
Any help in this matter would be appreciated...I can't afford to invest in another one and I have a couple of projects I'm in the middle of.Has it been tested with a clean installation of OS X -- no third-party software present? And no peripherals connected?
If so, no one here is going to be able to tell you anything you don't already know. -
10.4.8 crashed my MBP 2.0GHz (Kernel Panic)
I'm pretty sure it was my own fault... I thought I was installing 10.4.8 from a local file but it must have been a file on my network connected G5 that was being used. There was a message on the laptop part-way through the install, There was a loss of network connections. Please retry the installation."
However when I could retry, I got a kernel panic and that was it. Now the only thing that works is Target mode.
Booting from computer internal drive, starting from DVD (drop in or 10.3) fail the same way- gray screen of death!
Messages read:
Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"
Debugger called: <panic>
(there are seven lines following, the last of which terminates the back trace)
How can I get the MBP to live again? The only good news is that (miraculously, I have a full backup completed hours before and it is recoverable. However is it worth restoring the drive?
Does 10.4.8 do some kind of boot ROM reloading? Is info loaded elsewhere on the machine that can't be fixed by completely restoring the drive to original?
Full disk restore or not? I guess I don't have anything to lose except time.
G5 PM 2.0GHz/1.5GB dual MBP 15" 2.0GHz/2GB G3 B&W 400MHz Mac OS X (10.4.7)Yeh. I thought I had done that but apparent;y mistook the icon. Anyway, it came out OK. I didn't have to start over, thanks to my backup procedures, so glad I learned that lesson long ago.

My Late 2013 Retina MBP had a Kernel Panic - not sure what the source is.
I have a recently-purchased Macbook Pro (late 2013, Retina, 13", 8GB RAM, 2.4 GB i5) that just had a kernel panic this afternoon. This is the first time I've had a kernel panic on this computer, so I don't know what the cause is. It's claiming that 'kextd' is the related process, but I don't remember having installed anything recently that would have a kernel extension attached to it. Maybe one of you might know what it's related to?
Here's the panic report:

Mbp goes into kernel panic after install of 10.6.3!!!!
Hi i just took in my mbp to the apple store and they replaced both the hard drive and optical drive, and they installed 10.6.3, but now when i go to turn it on, it takes me to my desktop and then says you need to restart it. i have tried to boot from the 10.5 disc and 10.6.6 disc and it doesnt work. any thoughts? this is really frustrating.
EDIT: it even goes into kernel when im in safe boot. also now when i try to boot, it doesnt get past the white/grey screen before it says i need to restart.

MBP 2008 15" Kernel Panic with chrome?!
Hello!
I have been having the following problems with my MBP 15" Late 2008 with Mavericks installed.
Frequently, opening google chrome crashes my entire system. I can hard restart, but chrome will automatically try to reopen the pages that caused the problems. I thought it might be due to Sophos, but after uninstalling that, the problem persisted.
Activity monitor shows Chrome and Chrome Helper as the culprit, but I can't force quit it. Sometimes after hours, If I'm lucky, the system is usable again, but it's not a very good way to work.
my technical understanding is limited, so please try to help me in the most simple terms possible;) Appreciate it!
Here#s my Etre Check system report, hope someone can help:

I would like to continue using chrome, because it is the only browser supported by ZenMate. For someone located in Europe, it comes in handy when wanting to use Netflix etx, smth other vpn's have been unable to do.
If the problem persists to this extent, I will hoever have no choice but to ditch chrome, like I said, I only use chrome so I can access these streaming services in the US.
The problem especially occurs when I want to update flashplayer, silverlight or mac updats in general. -
Data doubler, where to put the SSD
Hi,
I'm planning to buy a Data Doubler for my Macbook, is which bay should I put the SSD?
I have heard that it is best to leave the HDD in its original place, because the vibration could damage the computer in the data doubler, but I have also heard that the SSD in the data doubler (where the OS will be, of course) caused some problem when waking the computer up since the Mac Os does'nt check this SATA port.
So..
A) HDD->Orignal bay, SSD->data doubler
B)SSD->original bay, HDD->data doubler
What do you think?
Thank yougenevievefromlaval wrote:
Thanks for your reply. The thing is I'm worried about vibrations from the HDD since the optical bay isn't made to handle them.
In your op you said the reason you were worried about the vibrations was that they could damage the MBP. Let me assure you, every optical drive I've ever had makes far more vibration than any HD I've ever had . . . . -
Kernel Panic from USB after 10.5.6 and/or EFI 1.6 updates on MBP
For the last two-three months I have been developing code for a custom USB device with no problems whatsoever. After I upgraded to 10.5.6 and ran the EFI 1.6 update, my MBP throws a Kernel Panic like clockworks whenever I release the USB device.
This is how it happens:
I virtualize WXP through VMware fusion. Run Visual Studio 2005 and connect to my device (Cylinx EX=USB). The device runs perfectly well (sends/receives USB data) until the end of the program when handles to the device are released. When execution reaches the line that releases handles I get a kernel panic.
I had no problems before I installed the OS and firmware update.
I have no problems if I boot up WXP natively through BootCamp.
Anyone else seeing any USB kernel panics?More info:
With still to many unknowns about the USB Kernel Panic while virtualizing(Fusion 2.0) Win XP (Visual Studio 2005) to drive a Cypress EZ-USB chip(Thesicon USB Driver) I did some testing.
Is it my code or the system?
I ran Thesicon's sample code for driving USB and the kernel panic occurred just as with my code. It happens exactly when the code releases the last handle to the USB device. Conclusion: My code is fine (it also runs perfectly on Bootcamp), it is the system.
Is it Fusion 2.0?
I went through the pain of installing Parallels v4 (Fusion is much nicer) and the problem occurred exactly as above. The USB device was recognized and sent and received data but a kernel panic happens as soon as the last handle to the device is released.
So my remaining question is whether it was the EFI update or OS X 10.5.6 update? Since everything runs well when I boot up using Bootcamp (which I assume is using the same firmware as when I boot up in OS X), and everything worked great before both updates, my number one suspect is the 10.5.6 upgrade.
Anyone else having USB problems while virtualizing, using Cypress USB chips or Thesicon Drivers.
For the moment I can boot XP through Bootcamp and survive, but my life is in OS X and its a pain to have to reboot back and forth. -
My MBP suffers from "kernel panic" attacks on an almost daily basis. This has occured ever since I downloaded Lion. The Apple support page suggests that this is a rare occurance, but it happens to me almost every day. Most often, if I let the computer go to sleep or close the lid, I'll find that it won't "wake up" without a complete re-boot. It always sends a report to Apple and for a couple of days I thought the issue was resolved, but now it's happening again with increasing regularity. I've reinstalled Lion once already... Any suggestions?
We can't help without the KP. In the meantime, see

Kernel panics in new Unibody MBP
Hi,
Got one of the brand new Unibody MBP and I have experienced two kernel panics in two days... One watching a movie, the other browsing internet.
Here's the transcript of the log... Im quite scared as my uncle's new MBP experienced several kernel panics until Apple exchanged ram and the HD.
Any ideas on what this is?
Many thanks!
