15" MBP Not booting up

Hello everyone, just on reading week and trying to get projects done for my graphic design program.
I was doing some travelling and such today and brought my MBP with me, it was doing okay, it was in sleep mode for the drive home.
when i got home, i opened it and everything seemed normal until i realized that i couldnt click on anything adn the battery status indicator had not changed as it should when i plugged the adapter in. basically it was frozen and all i could do was move the mouse pointer.
i hard-reset and when it went to start up, it stayed on the gray screen for too long and when it finally got to the blue screen, the OS X load-up window did not appear and the login window did not appear...
does anyone have an ideas? i've done a PRAM reset, ive taken the battery and power adapter out, held the power button for 5 secs and nothing, ive repaired the disk and permissions...no dice.
i am going to be screwed for my assignments this coming week.

Great, thank Niel, very helpful. Did what you suggested, and tried a restart with no problems.
I was looking at the Apple site, and read a small paragraph regarding removing the Windows partition and possible problem when booting up. THe suggested solution is to go through Boot Camp again, create the partition, reinstall Windows and then get Windows to format the partitioned drive. Once that is done, then one has to go back to Boot Camp, and lick on remove and restore.
The suggestion from Niel sounds a lot quicker and easier, and works!

  • Why would a late 2008 MBP not boot with 10.8?

I have a late 2008 MBP I update from 10.7.4 to 10.7.5 and it refused to boot, although it would safe boot. So I tried a clean 10.7.5 install still would not boot. Again happy to boot into safe mode.
Next tried a clean 10.8 install again it will only boot into safe mode.
Booting into verbose mode it fails at the bluetooth, so i tried disabling the bluetooth extensions, still no joy.
    Any ideas?

    Hey Sig,
I ran all the usally disk repairs and permissions repairs. It still will not boot in normal mode in any OSX above 10.7.4. I assume they have change a driver or extention that is causing a conflict. Its very fustrating as others seem to be running ML on the seem hardware with no problem.

  • RAM failure as one possible reason for MBP not booting up

    Hello,
Just moving from an HP Win 7 laptop and got a brand new 11' MBP a month ago, which I must say was a bit disappointing in terms of overall performance, as I was clearly expecting more from a Mac.
Yesterday, after it went off out of battery, could not boot it back up despite plugging the charger: black screen, little white light on but nothing else. Tried anything I could find on this community pages (hard reboot, SMC, etc) without any success.
My IT support came this morning, and removed one of the two 4 Go RAM barr (from Samsung) and it rebooted magically. Apparently this is their second case of RAM failure on new MBP in 24 hours
Besides, I am now experiencing with a much faster computer on 4 Go of RAM instead of 8.
Bottom line, some recent Macs may have been equipped with defective RAM chips, you may want to consider this if running into a laptopt that stops bootting up.
    Hope this helps
    Cheers
    Raphaël

I just noticed you said you'd erased your hard drive. That might be why there is nothing to see.
OK, try this -insert a system CD then power off. Switch on and hold down the alt key. Do you get the grey screen but with no drives appearing? If so, is the CD/DVD drive spinning and making a noise?
Wait for a minute or so and see if the CD/DVD appears on the screen as a boot option once it gets up to speed. It won't appear instantly.
if it does select it and see what happens. be patient. A boot DVD will be slow but you should hear the drive going if it's loading the software.

  • Mid 2009 MBP not booting...

Hey, my Macbook Pro has suddenly stopped working. Last night, while using Chrome, the program froze, and no input was accepted except mouse movement, computer wide. It started working again for about 30 seconds, then froze completely with a little twirling loading circle in the center of the screen (not the beachball, just a standard-twirling-loading-thingy). This has happened before and last time, I stayed like this for an hour, so I just force shut down the computer, and restarted it. However, on restart, all I got to was the grey apple screen, with the same loading circle. It did not change from this for 10 minutes, so I turned it off and tried again a number of times. It didn't progress any further once.
I looked up this problem on the net, but all I could find is people who were stuck on the blue loading screen that follows the grey one. I have not managed to get this far. Still, one of the suggestions was to take out the power and leave the computer off over night. I tried that, and still, nothing happened.
I thought this might be a hard drive problem, but when I put my installation disc in and hold C while booting....I hear the DVD drive spinning, but nothing happens. Same grey screen.
I should also mention that my mbp also has got bootcamp with Windows 7 installed. However, when I boot into this, all I get is a message saying that the comp is corrupted, and I'm prompted to either find the drivers on the HD (nothing shows up), or restore to a previous backup (paraphrasing of course). If I remember correctly, however, this problem has already existed for months, since I stuffed up a parallels install on that partition, and never got around to fixing it. And well, I can't find my windows install disc either =/.
What the **** should I do? I don't really want to send it away for warranty, cause I have a lot of private data on there, and I need a lot of things off the HDD pretty soon (assignments, etc. due in the next few days) =/. My friend has offered to try getting everything off my hard drive, as he has a laptop HDD bay, but will removing it void my warranty?
I know what I've written is kinda long and I've asked a lot of questions, but any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.
PS: I have OSX Snow Leopard, possibly a few versions behind as I rarely go and use Software Update.

Argh, it seems that the only firewire cord I have will not fit into eiher computer. It's one off an old DV camcorder. I guess I'll have to wait til tomorrow to buy one =/
    Any other suggestions?

  • Please help! MBP 15" 2011 will not boot at all

    Hi,
My 15 inch early (May) mbp 2011 will not start up. Here is what I have observed so far:
    1) When power button is pushed (without MagSafe attached) hard drive will spin up and about after 3-5 seconds it will turn off (hard drive spins Down, no further boot process) No chime, no led indicator light in front.
    2) When power button is pushed (with MagSafe attached) hard drive spins up, keeps spinning, but no further boot process. Just black screen and spinning hard drive.
    3) When attempting SMC reset, fans turn to high, and screen remains black, still no boot)
    4) Since mbp fails before booting, PRAM/NRAM resetting is not a possibility. (Tried)
    5) I have also removed the battery cable from the logic board, and tried resetting without any luck.
    6) I entered CD into optical drive - it "ate" it, but will not eject now. (Tried holding eject/left mouse/control e etc) still nothing.
    7) After letting mbp rest for 1 day, it booted fine like nothing happend, worked fine for 1 day, then next morning back to square one. Now 5 days later still nothing.
If anybody has any ideas what could be wrong, or have possible solutions, please don't hesitate.
    Thanks in advance, Oliver

    Hey there Oliverkehn,
It sounds like your computer is not booting up at all at this point, even after some very thorough troubleshooting you've already done. From the following article, I would use these steps that I don't mention as having been tried just yet:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

If you are still unable to start up your computer after trying each of these steps, visit an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) for further diagnosis. If you plan to visit an Apple Retail Store, make a reservation at the Genius Bar using http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ (available in some countries only).Note: Diagnostic fees may apply for issues not covered under warranty or the AppleCare Protection Plan (APP).

  • New MBP i5 does not boot after hard disk swap

    Hi there,
I received my new i5 MBP today. After booting it once with the installed HDD to check if it's ok, I exchanged the hard disk for the one in my Late 2008 Macbook Pro. After doing this, my Late 2008 Macbook Pro boots fine with the (new) hard disk from the new i5 MBP, but the i5 MBP does not boot with my old hard disk.
    To give you some details:
    - I have installed 10.6.3 on the (old) hard disk that's not booting.
    - The i5 MBP boots fine from the installation DVD
    - Disk utility finds and can read my hard disk, no errors
    - PRAM NVRAM reset did not help
    - when booting in safe mode, I can see the system stop booting after or while loading Extensions.mkext
My guess is, it tries to boot and load the wrong Extensions for the new system (CPU? GPU?). I have no idea how to fix this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Focx,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Inserting the drive from an earlier model MBP will probably not work. The version of the system you have on that HD is designed for earlier hardware so when you put in in your new machine it's going to be recognized. What I'd recommend is re-installing the disk that came with the new machine and of course putting the 2008's disk back in the old machine. Then use Migration Assistant on the new machine and migrate your data from the old machine into the new machine.
This will provide a much more stable system and should work just fine.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • MBP will not boot up with USB devices connected

I have a late 2010 MBP 15 10.7.2 that will no longer boot up if any USB devices are attached. A dongle, a hub, anything. It goes to the gray screen and stays there. Disconnecting all USB devices the MBP will boot up. Then connecting the USB devices they work. It just will not boot up with anything connected to the USB ports. I have reset PRAM, SMC and fixed disk permissions. Made sure login items are ok, and start up disk is correct. I cant really say when the problem started as it worked fine before, maybe on 10.7.1? Not sure.
    Any suggestions for a fix?

I re-installed the 10.7.2 combo. It booted up with a non powered usb 4 port hub but it disabled it. Plugging it out then in again and it works. Looks like the USB firmware has changed somehow in 10.7.2, The hub works on PC's at work no problem, and it worked on the MBP without issue previously. Its not just the non powered hub its a powered hub, and other devices.
    Any solutions?

  • MBP white screen w/ swirl...will not boot

    hello all,
huge problem i'm having. i am using a 2yo MBP with OSX 10.4.11. i am not sure what processor it has but it's definitely an Intel and i have never upgraded the RAM.
the laptop is company owned however, the company stopped supporting Mac around the time i started the job and when i've had trouble with it in the past, IT didn't want to bother with it at all. so getting discs to re-install software might be a HUGE problem.
my problem: last night i did an update to Java, Quicktime, iTunes and the Security update. everything went well but it said there was a problem doing the Security update and that something was placed in the trash. in any event i restarted the computer and when it restarted all i got was the white screen w/ Apple logo and the loading circle status bar (swirl thing). i let it sit for a good 40min and nothing happened.
this morning i took my fiance's install DVD (as she owns a same year 17" MBP using 10.4) and booted the computer from that. i ran Repair Disc on the drive and it passed. there were no errors or repairs to be made.
so now, it's sitting there with the same white screen, etc, not booting/loading at all. i haven't the slightest idea as to what to do. now, if i had the Adobe CS suite discs, i'd just do a clean install but i do not have those available and as stated above, it would be a problem trying to get them.
will an Archive & Install help do the trick? any suggestions will be helpful and appreciated.
thanx and sorry this is so long, just wanted to be as detailed as possible.

well... what i meant was: i'd totally wipe the computer, re-install OSX and then re-install the Adobe Suite, Quark, MS Office, etc etc. but i don't have any of the software discs here. i just have the two discs that were provided with my fiance's MBP. i didn't realize though the licensing violation and that could be an issue given it's a company computer. all of the software discs are in Cali, i'm in NJ and my IT could care less about the laptop even though i do use it. for instance, my power cord sparked and burnt out and they were resistant on getting me a replacement until my manager forced them too. they don't take kindly to Macs in my office, haha.
as an update though... i tried starting in safemode, nothing. i tried starting is single-user mode, couldn't type anything out. i'm about to try verbose mode and see if i can do /sbin/fsck -fy.
i appreciate your comments, might you have any other suggestions as to what i can do?

  • Hi, i have a MBP 13, late 2012. Its over an year old since purchase and now out of warranty. This morning the computer did not boot so i went down to apple store and they looked at it and said its a logic board failure requiring replacement worth£350

Hi, i have a macbookpro 13, late 2012. I bought it last year october and its an year old and now out of warranty. This morning the computer did not boot, so i went down to apple store and they looked at it and said its a logic board failure and needs replacement worth £350. The tech at apple store gave no explanation, why suddenly, my computer decided not to start at all and said to me it was a logic board failure for no apparent reason and requires replacement. I have maintained the laptop in a pristine condition. Now I feel I have been cheated. This clearly means the product is substandard as a £1100 laptop is not expected to fail in just over a year. My last laptop PC which was worth £450 served me for 4 years before it crashed and lived for another 2 years until I decided to get a mac. This is ridiculous. I don't have apple care at the moment which translates as pay to get it fixed. Anybody in my situation ? I want to sue apple for selling me a substandard good . Any thoughts? Should I go for another pc for £500 because there is no guarantee even after the laptop were fixed by apple for £350 it would last for another year. I need a reliable machine.

This morning my MBP just woke up from sleep and is working without any glitches. I don't know what to say about this.

  • Can not boot off of installation disk - MBP 10.6

I am trying to wipe and reinstall the OS in my 2010 MBP 15. I have tried everything - and it will not boot off of the disk. It sees the disk and starts to boot - but it gets stuck at the gray screen with the darker gray Apple logo. I tried it with the original disks that came with the MBP (has OS 10.5.7). And, I tried it with the store-bought Snow Leopard disks (when 10.6 first came out).
Here is a partial list of what I've tried:
Held down the C key to boot directly off of the disk - stuck at gray screen
Held down the Option key and then selected the disk - stuck at gray screen
I thought maybe it was the optical drive. So, I put a DVD movie in there - and it played just fine.
    Reset the PRAM
Cloned the hard drive to an external HD. Booted from the cloned HD using a firewire. Then, used Disk Utility to Erase the internal HD. Then, restarted with nothing on the internal HD. Still wouldn't boot from the disk
    Reset the SMC
Checked hard drive with Disk Warrior - and it found that the HD was fine. Ran SMART - and it also tested just fine
I've tried all I can think of to just get the MBP

If you can't boot from a valid installation disc with no peripherals connected, then you have a hardware problem. Take the unit in for service.

  • Late 2011 17" MBP - Will not boot, eject, or read disk

    Hi guys,
My late 2011 17" MBP after having a server error on Mac Recovery, freezing, and being force shut off, now will not boot.
When you power it up, it chimes then goes to a blue screen, indefinitely.
It also will not eject the DVD in it's drive.
I've tried every key combination prior to startup or during startup to try and remedy this, and nothing.
It always boots with a chime then blue screen.
    Please help. :3

    Ejecting the disk:
    Try these various remedies: http://guides.macrumors.com/Force_Eject_a_Stuck_CD_or_DVD
Since your Mac came with Lion installed it may have a recovery partition on the boot disk.
There are two ways boot from the Recovery Partition:
    - Hold down the Command-R as you boot.
This will attempt to boot from the Recovery Partition
and if that fails it will try to boot using Network Recovery (a slow process).
    - If it won’t boot using Command-R then hold down the Option key as you boot.
              Select the Recovery Partition.
Backup:  Do you have a recent backup?  If not I suggest you create one before proceeding.  You might not need it but it is especially important to have a backup whenever your Mac is sick.  Post back for instructions for an emergency backup, if needed.
    Blue Screen:
From the Recovery Partition you should be able to repair the disk and reïnstall OS X (without erasing you existing data).

  • OSX Lion not booting on mbp early 2011

Hi I have a 2011 early mbp. Ive never had any issues with and and I upgraded to Lion when it came out. About 4 days ago it just would not boot into Lion at all. Would get stuck at the Apple Picture and the circle thing and thats it. I tried to boot the recovery partition and it would still get stuck at the same spot. I took out my hard drive and connected it Via USB on my iMac and it boots up just fine. I than used the recovery from the iMac and reinstalled Lion on the mbp hard drive. I put the hard drive back and it still wont boot up. Any ideas?

Have you tried booting in Safe Mode ?
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
If still failing, sounds like an internal component failing and would visit an Apple Store and show them it's not the hard disk since it boots via USB.

  • 2007 MBP will not boot, chimes no apple logo, makes noise under right side

My laptop froze today so I restarted it and now it will not boot up. From reading, it may be the logic board or ram. Has anyone had this happen? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

well of course I'm going to do that, but since they couldn't figure it out the first time I figured it may be helpful if I could ask here first and if somebody else has had this same problem and knows what's going on it would be easier for them to find the real problem, because I don't think the logic board is the problem, or at least it isn't the only problem.

  • Macbook Air mid-2013 suddenly not booting - showed battery icon then died

    Hi all,
This morning, I used my Macbook Air (mid-2013) to send an email and check up on my usual stuff, nothing I've not done hundreds of times. I then closed the lid and went to work. Again, nothing I've never done before.
When I got home though, I opened the Macbook and it didn't wake up, which I thought was odd. So I pressed the power button. For a few seconds, it showed an icon in the middle of a black screen that was related to the battery - sorry I can't recall exactly what it looked like, its the first time I've seen it, but it showed an empty battery with a small red part of it left - obviously understood as meaning the battery was flat.
I was puzzled at this; it should have been asleep since I'd closed the lid, how could it have run out? I was only gone for about 8 hours as well, I usually get more battery life than that out of it when I'm actually using it, never mind when its sleeping.
But I thought whatever, and plugged it in for a few minutes to charge it up enough to turn on and maybe see why it had done this. The orange light came on the Magsafe end, but after a few minutes, still nothing.
Cue much panicking and looking around at things, and this is what I've discovered/tried:
    - The battery appears to be charging, the light eventually went green.
    - When I press the power button, the Mac does power on; I can hear the fan inside if I put my ear to it (note that this means its really quiet, its not blowing at full power or anything), and the Mac is getting hot on the left hand side where the power adapter plugs in. It turns on both when plugged in and when its not. So the battery has power and the machine is turning on, it just isn't booting or doing anything. I can turn it off if I hold the power button down for about 3 seconds, the fan stops. But everything else is completely unresponsive. Also, it gets quite hot pretty quick, hotter than it normally does when in use.
    - I've reset the SMC, several times. When I do this, the light on the Magsafe goes green for a second, then back to orange, as though I've just plugged it in. I guess this means it is responding to the SMC reset, but it does nothing in terms of getting the thing started. This is the first thing people suggest with this problem, but I've already done it and while it seems to be doing its thing, it doesn't fix the problem.
    - I've tried resetting the PRAM/NVRAM. This has no noticeable affect on anything.
    - I've tried holding a bunch of different keys when starting up (cmd+R etc.) but again, nothing.
    - I've tried something crazy suggested in another thread; leaving the Macbook partially opening and shaking it, which supposedly does something to the "sudden motion sensor". I wouldn't have tried this but a whole bunch of people said it worked for them, but it does nothing for me. The fact this step didn't work is why I made a new thread; because the issue with those people seemed to be that their Macs wouldn't wake up from sleep/hibernation and shaking it somehow did that, or they just magically woke up on their own.
And at this stage I seem to have run out of thing to try.
I've made an appointment at the Genius bar but the earliest they could do is Saturday, which is pretty crappy and I'm going travelling in less than 2 weeks, so I really need my Macbook to sort out the details since a lot of info about it is on there exclusively.
Does anyone know any reason why this might have happened?
Why would the battery drain so fast when it was supposed to be sleeping?
Why will it now not boot at all, even though it's powering up in some way? Could it not booting be related to the fact the battery seemed to run completely flat, and this has done something to the software or hardware?
Any suggestions beyond what I've tried already?
If I can't get it working before my Genius appointment, I'll post what happens here just in case any one else has this issue so people will have an idea of what might have happened to them.
    Thanks in advance!

You could try booting the MBP using the OPTION+COMMAND+R keys and see if it will connect to the Apple servers.  This would allow you to install the original OSX .  I have my doubts though.

The Sudden Motion Sensor is applicable for conventional Hard Drives, not the SSD that is in a MBA.  Doing that will serve no useful purpose.
You have exhausted all reasonable options and will just have to have the MBA evaluated at the genius bar.
