15" MBP with Nvidia vs. Non for heavy use of iMovie

I would like to purchase a new 15" MacBook Pro and am wondering if I should get the more expensive one with the Nvidia Graphics Card or without.  I like to do a lot of video editing on iMovie and have thousands and thousands of photos on iPhoto that I like to edit.
Do I need the Nvidia graphics card or should I get the standard 15" model and up the memory/processor/hard drive?
Thank you!

Perhaps if I put it this way...
Does anyone know what temperature I need to stay under so that the video card does not detach again?
I have istat monitor and it shows a few different temps.
thanks for any help...

We are not Adobe here. Rather user to user.
In the threads that I have read here the following is the user to user reply on this matter that is seen regarding project assets....Music Scores in this case....
The Music Score soundtracks are from the Adobe Premiere Elements (12 or 13) Music Score selections within the program.
And, they can be used in the users choice of export. As for "authorship", I guess you would point to Adobe, Premiere Elements version, Music Score.
Would the evaluators settle for the above information?

  • Scrambled display video on MBP with NVIDIA GT 300 card

Hi; I'm posting this on the MBP discussion group (mistakenly posted it on the MacBook group; thanks to frederic1943 for pointing this out)  was wondering if anyone was having this same problem.  I have a 15-inch MBP with i7 processor (I believe it is mid-2010), running Mac OS X 10.6.7, that has the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics card in addition to the Intel graphics card.  I have upgraded the physical RAM to the maximum 8GB.
I have recently been experiencing a problem in using Firefox 4.0.1 in which one or both of 2 things happens:  1) when I open a new window or tab in Firefox, the window is totally black; and/or 2) the display becomes scrambled and I can no longer make out the outlines of windows in Firefox.  Sometimes a black page will open normally if I refresh the screen with cmd-R (sometimes it takes 2 or 3 tries), and sometimes the scrambled screen will return to normal appearance if I click on the Menu bar and slide the cursor left and right; sometimes I can then grab a window handle and "wipe" the screen clear of the scrambled video so it is readable again.
I will admit that I have had quite a few windows open in Firefox when this has happened, so I suspect I may be stressing the video RAM.  However, I wanted to see there are other explanations for this problem.
I have read about similar-sounding problems with earlier MBPs using the 8600 graphics card, but not with the one I have.  I also saw some posts about similar-sounding problems with Safari that did not occur with Firefox; however, I'm having the problem in Firefox.  I haven't tried Safari to see if I would have the same problem.  I've run TechTool which did not find any problems, and also ran the Cron scripts (all 3) using Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner, but am still having the problem.  I have over 800MB of system RAM free (although I realize it may be the video RAM that is limiting here).  I
Any ideas or similar experiences?  Any feedback (other than closing some windows, which I have been doing, and am still having the problem) would be most helpful.
    Thanks, - Klingon725

having too many tabs open isnt the issue here, i would love to answer you, but i work for AMD, so i rarely get in touch with nvidia gpus but u should try booting in safe mdoe first, and running the apple hardware test will be a good idea

  • How do you setup HDMI audio with "Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac"?

So I just purchased a new Mac Pro:
    Mac Pro (5,1) 3.33 GHz 6-Core
    8 GB Ram
    ATI Radeon HD 5770
    1TB HDD
    OS 10.8.3
I also purchased a new Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac Graphics Card because the 3D animation software I'm using (Blender) requires this card to accelerate render times.
I have installed the card and all is working well as far as I can tell except for the HDMI audio.  According to the specs on Nvidia for this card, it DOES support HDMI audio through the Display port.  I have my HDMI cable plugged up and the video works great.  However the audio option does not show up in the System Preferences.  (Here is the page for the graphics card.  Look under "specifications" at the bottom for the audio part.  http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-quadro-4000-mac-us.html).
I did find a link for a kernel addition for HDMI audio but it stated "non-Apple Nvidia cards" and this one is specifically for Mac.  Here is that link:  http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1499797.  (I also plan on posing the same question there.)
The reason I want the HDMI to work is I'm using a TV as my monitor.
Now I did try the HDMI with the ATI Card and both the audio and video work great.
What I did for a quick work around is install both cards and use the GPU processor on the Nvidia for the animation program and use the ATI for the actual port and this fixes the hdmi audio issue.  However this takes up pretty much all of my PCI slots and seems like a waste of space and power.
Has anyone else run into this problem and found a solution??  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

I went ahead and tried that extension that I found.  It worked!
I guess Mac just didn't include the audio support in the driver that it includes.  Below is were I found the instructions and download.  It includes a shell script that installs the kernal from the Terminal prompt.  The instructions were clear and installed with out a hitch.  There were also instructions to remove it if there were issues.
    Here is the link:

  • Any bios release with Nvidia core calibration for K9N2 ?

Having the last official bios update for my mainboard model: ms-7374 v1.2 (K9N2 SLI PLAT.) --> bios 3.5, i've just seen that new Msi mainboards equipped with new revision of 750A sli and the new 980A sli (nf750A-G55 & nf980A-G65) allow to activate defectuous cores on Phenom x3 & x2 thanks to this bios option: "nvidia core calibration" like AMD chips called "ACC" so my mainboard having not this useful bios option do you think that the future bios release will have it ? I hope so cause i would like to change my 9650 for a 720 Black Edition for Christmas !!

The 790FX-GD70 is simply a great board... I've used it for the past few months and it's really doing a great job.
So, if you are considering to buy it, I'd say: go for it!
Yes Hans i believe you concerning this 790FX board but as i've said before i will keep my K9N2 even though there won't have any bios release with Nvidia core calibration option because i have always preferred Nvidia chips (as regards mainboards or graphic cards) than Ati-Amd chips whatever the brand (in the past i had Abit, Asus, Epox, Gigabyte mainboards on socket A/754/939 and always with Nvidia Nforce chips ) so i will just change in a few months my 9650 for a 955/940 Black Edition... By the way the 790FX-GD70 only supports DDR3 and i don't want to change my 4 Gigs G.Skill Hk dual channel DDR2 kit
The best way shoud be that all the owners of K9N2 Diamond and Platinum boards should tell Msi engineer team to make a new bios release having the NVCC function...

  • Confused how to set-up a PC & laptop with Cisco WRVS4400N VPN for home use

Just bought a new PC and laptop and was recommended by (CDW) to use a Cisco WRVS4400N to set up the VPN.
For home use, only the PC and laptop, both running Windows 7.  I use Comcast as my ISP.
The mountains of docs confuses me to no end, can anyone simplify this for me.  I look at all the details and do not know where to start.
    In short,
    (1) configure router to recognize my PC and Comcast, and I guess the laptop.
    (2) configure laptop to go wireless and communicate with PC.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Terry

For a very small office and a minimum of admin and tech know how, one approach i'd suggest is to not worry about user id collisions at all. any time anyone wants to use a mac you just set them up as a user, using consistent names/passwords.
Have a "Work" volume on each mac that has "ignore ownership on this volume" ticked. that way UID collisions aren't important.
You can make a Desktop folder on the Work volume and make a SYMBOLIC LINK from every user's home that replaces their desktop with the desktop folder on the Work volume.
Make it known that the user's home is for personal stuff ONLY, and the Work volume (inc the desktop) is where work in progress lives.
At a later date with some confidence in your network and your admin skills you could impose consistent UIDs using an OD master

  • Display problems with NVIDIA K5000 card for Mac

I have recently switched cards in my Mac to the heavier NVIDIA K5000 card. While great for After Effects and Premiere, I get wild artifacting in Indesign CC 2014.
Is this a know issue and how can I (hopefully) solve this?
    Albert

I've branched this issue to a new discussion as it was unrelated to the problem the other folks were seeing.
We continue to widen the number of video cards that we support GPU acceleration on.  It sounds like this is what you're running into.
Since it's unrelated to Protected Mode, definitely go back and make sure that you've removed the line from your mms.cfg that you may have added while troubleshooting that problem.  Disabling Protected Mode in general is a bad idea, and will leave you vulnerable to many modern classes of attacks over the long term.
If you haven't updated to the latest available drivers for your graphics hardware, please do that.  It may eliminate the issue you're experiencing.
If that doesn't work, please check out our graphics troubleshooting guide:

  • MBP 15 Retina: Velvet handcuffs for my use?

Greetings, all. Soaking up so much great information here. Hoping for guidance and hoping I am not stupidly wasting anyone's time with a scenario already discussed.
Bought the above machine last weekend. Busy schedule means I have not yet opened the box.
Got the base processor, 8gb RAM and the 256 SSD. Use lots of Photoshop and Lightroom, plus more everyday computing tasks. Have not yet shot/edited video but would like to try. Recently bought a couple mid-range Nikon DSLRs, my first-ever DSLRs with video capability. Eager to shoot and edit some short vids for a couple business clients and a couple musician friends.
Thought SSD was the cat's meow but I'm now reading that for video editing, SSD might not be the best choice (freeze frames). Plus, in retrospect, that 256 capacity is making me nervous with video in mind. There's simply so much I don't know about video yet.
I realize that my new machine is fantastic, but now I wonder if I simply got the wrong one. Was quite seduced by the display and the thinness, but am now concerned that my choice of the SSD was perhaps not the best. SO HERE'S MY BOTTOM-LINE CONCERN, that the SSD isn't what I should have gotten.
Thinking of taking it back and geting a non-Retina MBP 15 with a large-capacity traditional 7200 HDD, same processor, and same 8 gb of RAM. Plus, I'll also get a CD/DVD drive back.
    Thoughts?
    Many, many thanks in advance.
    Klooks in Chicago

The SSD speeds up a Mac a lot, and is wonderful for the more professional type applications that you mentioned.
I chose the non-retina model because you are getting the same processor, a great graphics card, and can update it for less than what Apple charges you to upgrade the retina model for.  I bought an SSD and 16gb of ram for under $300.  It starts in 15 seconds and Aperture loads in about 2 seconds.  It is amazingly fast.
For video though, you will definitely want more storage.  Your best bet is to buy a big enough SSD to store whatever you are working on in the short term, and get a fast external setup to store the rest.  Thunderbolt or USB 3 would work great for that.
You can also upgrade the storage yourself on your Retina MBP.  They only offer a 240gb or 480gb, and the price is considerably higher than a standard SSD.  The ram you cannot upgrade yourself.
Here's a link to the OWC website that has the SSD upgrades for the Retina MBP.

  • 15" Macbook Pro with or without retina display - heavy use

I work in online marketing, and just about live on my computer.  I have tons of photos, some videos and music, but also a lot of files that I access via a personal and a professional DropBox.  I have a 1TB backup drive that I use for Time Machine.  I also travel a lot for work, and currently am running out of room on my existing Macbook Pro, and am torn over which model to get next.
    I currently have a 15" mid-2009 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.8.2
Processor: 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Hard drive: 500GB
    USED: 431GB (yeah I know that's a lot)
Here's my concern.  I love how fast it was, but it's getting slow as I have more and more stuff on it.  It's got some dings and dents from being carted all over the country, and I've had to replace the screen once (I cracked it..) so now there's some dirt underneath it that I keep meaning to clean but just haven't gotten around to it.  I have the 1TB backup drive, but it's not easily portable.  And I frequently (always) multitask, so need a computer that can handle having everything opened and running multiple programs at a time (5- 10 programs depending on what I'm doing).  I have the glossy screen (holy glare!) and if I stay with the non-retina, would definitely get the anti-glare hi res screen.
Based on all of the above, which makes more sense for me to get?
15" Macbook Pro with Retina ($2,799)
    2.6GHz Quad Core i7
8GB 1600 MHz DDR3L (do I need to upgrade to the 16GB? no, right, seeing as how I have just 4GB now?)
512GB SSD (concerned this won't be enough - do I just spend another $100 and get a portable external drive?)
    15" Macbook Pro Anti-Glare Hi Res ($2,499)
    2.6GHz Quad Core i7
    8GB 1600 MHz
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
Here's my last question - based on what I've read, the SSD is significantly faster than the traditional drives, is this true?  If so, does it make sense to just go with the retina display and purchase an external HD so that I have more room?
    Thanks so much!

I would go with the 512 SSD if your going for speed. The 1tb Ata will hold more but you will notice perfomance slowing down once you fill up past around 700 gigs
Also the make 500gig passport external drives that are about the size of a smartphone and are extremely portable and will not effect the speed of your computer

  • Hires monitor with nvidia driver busted? [nevermind. used wrong cable]

UPDATE: I'm an idiot. I screwed up connecting the cable and used a single channel DVI cable, despite being perfectly aware of the need to use dual. Swapped in the right cable and all's well.
I got a Dell u2711 monitor and expected it to just work. When I try to run it at 2560x1440 everything looks wrong; it's not just fonts, even the mouse cursor is somehow screwed up. Text is unreadable. Yes, I'm using the dual channel DVI cable.
The information xrandr reports appears correct:
        $ xrandr
        DVI-I-2 connected 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
           2560x1440      60.0*+
    xdpyinfo says something else, though.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (997x342 millimeters)
          resolution:    108x107 dots per inch
I thought maybe the disagremement on dimensions was the problem so I plopped
    this into /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/90-monitor.conf
        Section "Monitor"
            Option    "UseEdidDpi"    "false"
            Identifier "Monitor0"
            DisplaySize 597 336
        EndSection
        Section "Screen"
            Identifier    "Screen0"
            Monitor       "Monitor0"
        EndSection
It did indeed change what xdpyinfo reports, but everything looks the same (squished and pixely). So it didn't work.
        $ xdpyinfo | grep -B2 resolution
        screen #0:
          dimensions:    4240x1440 pixels (598x339 millimeters)
          resolution:    180x108 dots per inch
I'm using the binary nvidia driver. I tried starting up with the Nouveau driver but that didn't improve things.
    I'm using a GeForce GTX 460 graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814127510
I do not know what's going on here or how to fix it. Is there a known issue using the Dell U2711 monitor with xorg and nvidia? Google doesn't seem to know about it.

I've had very little trouble in two years. And now I do like Windows 7 but also eager for the RC.
I've been using the latest Nvidia. There is a method to the madness of how to uninstall/delete and install graphics drivers, or madness in the method. The W7 drivers are easier.
Nope. Something else. More sensitive to disk errors. You aren't running a program to boost fans. Something.
And some AV software is more prone to causing trouble. But all you need is a good AV/malware program, and even Norton AV 2009 is acceptable, or Avast or one of the others.
