15 or 17 inches?

Hey everyone,
I'm doing research to buy a laptop sometime in the next few months, and I'd like your thoughts on the differences between 15 and 17 inch models. I can't decide if it's really worth the extra $300 for 2 inches of space. Then again, I do tend to get a little claustrophobic with screen size...maybe it would be.
I've also looked at the other features that a 17-inch MBP provides as opposed to a 15-inch. My gut is saying go with the 17, but I have a tendency to automatically go for the biggest and best, even when I don't need it...and this time it's a lot of money I'm dealing with. Could anyone offer me any advice about what I should do? i.e...if you have a 17" model was it worth the money, or if you have a 15" do you ever wish you would have gone with the 17"...etc.
I plan to use my laptop for graduate school (psychology program - lots of papers and possibly spreadsheets) and everyday uses like managing my photos and music. I tend to have many programs running at once.
I'd really like to hear any thoughts you have on this!
Thanks -

I got the 17", but I don't really use it as a laptop. in fact, I get so used to the fact that it's just set up in the one place on a stand, with a wireless mouse and keyboard, that sometimes I actually forget I can take it places.
I went for the 17" because I wanted the most powerful one available, with the largest amount of screen real estate I could get. in terms of portability, my needs for this machine are light.. I only need it to be portable in the sense that I can take it from one location to another to work, infrequently, and more easily than if I had a desktop machine. I never need to whip it out and use it on a plane or in a cafe, I just needed something that I could take to other places to work when it was necessary.
so for me, that equation of size vs portability balances in favour of the 17", because my portability needs are easily not hampered by the size of this machine given how rarely I take it anywhere. and the large size never is an issue in a portable situation for me because I don't ever try to use the machine 'on the road', only in different places like studios where there is plenty of room for it to be set up properly. all this factored against the very big advantage of having that large desktop space to work with made it the right choice for me.
all anyone needs to do when choosing between the 15 and 17 is just really address this size/portablity/weight/screen real estate equation, and see what wins. I think for most people, ie people that actually want something to easily use as a regular laptop, it's the 15" that is the best balance most of the time. but other users with needs like mine will know instantly if it's got the be the 17".

  • I have 2 inches of empty space on both sides of the screen on all websites when using firefox. How do I get webpages to fill the screen?

All my webpages on firefox have about 2 inches of empty space on both sides of the screen, but on Internet Explorer there is much less empty space or mostly none at all. How do i fix this?

I can't make out from your low-res screenshot what those gray images in the menu at the left are, but I do not see them and there is nothing int the page source that accounts for them.

  • Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter longer than 4 inches?

My ViewSonic monitor no longer works with my Macbook Air. Did work for six months. Pretty sure it's the knock off cable - loose in Thunderbolt. The only genuine Apple cable I can find is four inches. Are you kidding me? Anyone know if there is a longer one? Thanks.

  • My girlfriend has a 4 year old mac book, and I am going to buy her a new sleeve for it, what would the inches likely to be? (she is away, and I can't check on her laptop)

The question says it all. I found a laptop sleeve, but I don't know what the average size (in inches) of a 4 year old macbook. Is it about 10 or 12"?

Correct.   All MacBooks ever made only came in 13" screen size models.

  • How to develop/print a report wider than 8.5 inches, why cant we landscape

    Hi All Gurus,
I am new to Oracle Reports. I have a problem, I have a report that has rows longer than normal A4, A5, A6 paper width, so report lines either tend to go on next page or on next line of the same page. Also Oracle Report is not allowing me to print report in landscape mode, why this limitation ? I am wondering, cuz in older character based tools (Foxpro, Informix-4GL), we could easily print wider reports on a line printer which always had a capacity of 132 characters (and in condensed mode, 224 characters). So only small (and very simple) reports were printed on regular paper of 80 characters (8.5 inches wide), but for almost all real use reports we were able to use 132 (224 in condensed) characters paper.
How can we do this ith Oracle GUI report builder?. Why are we limited to 80 character paper size? why cant we print report in landscape mode? It is not, in any case, allowing me columns that go beyond 80 characters (8.5 inches) on a line. If this is an Oracle limitation, I would say Oracle Reports cannot be used for actual reporting, it is just a fancy with GUI and colors!!!!!
Can anybody answer my questions? please tell me an immediate solution.
    Thanks in Advance

You can go to Object Navigator, under Layout Model, click the Main Section icon to open the property, change to Width from 8.5 to 11 and Height from 11 to 8.5. Do the same for Header/Trailer Sections if needed.
At report printing, choose Landscape Orientation.

  • How do I set the image size in PS touch to print to my Epson printer w ithout losing any of the picture. PS Touch appears to be showing pixels and not inches, how can I covert it toshow inches?

I am using PS Touch from my tablet . I am importinga photo from an SD card . When all editing is completed I then send it wireless from the tablet  via Epson I print to the printer. It all works great except that part of the photo at each end is cut off and does not print. I am printing on 8.5 x11 paper.
How do I convert the image size in PSTouch frm pixels to inches?

Epson's iPrint has always been an oddball. It will always "zoom in" on an image to print even if you have the proper dimensions and resolution set for actual print size. I think other users have reported this, at least on Android.
You can't have PS Touch show inches instead of pixels at this time but you can use an online website to find out what you need to fit within a particular resolution. (Google "pixels to inches calculator".)

How can I restart my mac book pro 11 inches when it's on target disc mode

Even if you could open Disk Utility you can't reformat a disk while you are booted from it. You will have to use the install CD. Ring the Apple Online Store at the number given at bottom left of this page and give them the serial number of your Mac. You should be able to get the Snow Leopard install disks for a nominal fee.

  • How can I get the ruler tool to show length in inches?

This doc says the units the ruler tool shows length in are changed using preferences:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/en/photoshop/using/positioning-ruler-tool.html
This document says the ruler tool always uses pixels unless you change measurement scale on a per image basis:
    http://livedocs.adobe.com/en_US/Photoshop//10.0/help.html?content=WS3D3EF585-502B-49d2-85F F-537E9DC25C21.html
So far, the latter seems to be the case, but that's horribly inconvenient. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is there some setting somewhere that will make the ruler tool display measurement length in inches (or what ever I set in preferences)?
Note that I am not talking about the units shown at the top and left side when the ruler is in view, I'm talking about the ruler tool's position and length data, whether or not the ruler is in view.

    Trevor,
Unfortunately, that only changes the ruler units, not the mouse coordinates displayed when taking measurements using the ruler tool.
    gener7 nailed it though.

  • How do I convert from metric to inches in Microsoft Word 2008?

    Hello,
I'm trying to create a poster on my Macbook and am using Word 2008. Right now it's in the metric measurement and I want to convert to inches, how do I do this? I've tried the help and searching online and found how to do it on a PC but can't figure out how to do it on a Mac.

Okay my sister figured it out. You go to Preferences and click the General tab and then at the bottom it is listed in measurement and you just switch that to inches and click okay.

  • Using Scripts to detect document size in inches?

Is it possible that a script detects the document size in inches not in pixels?
    Thanks for the help!

The size an Image will print is a simple calulation the numbet of Pixel Wide Devided by the imageg current DPI resolution. And numbet of Pixel High Devided by the imageg current DPI resolution. You can always change the DPI while maintaining the same number of pizels using Image Size with resample NOT checked to change the image's print size. All the information can be retrived in a script and the script can change the image's print size with or without resampling the image.

  • Printing only 2 inches of image on paper.

    Hello:
I'm printing from Lightroom CC in the Print module on an Epson 3880.  I just successfully printed a photo on 13 x 19 paper.  When I tried to print a second copy of the same image and didn't change any setting, the print came out with only 2 inches of the bottom of the image.  The edges of that image are clear just like they would be if the entire image printed out.  The rest of the paper is blank.  I called Epson and tech support person told me that because I have image in the Preview window in the upper left hand corner of Lightroom, I will have no image printed.  However I do have a partial image printed.
I'm using a MAC 10.9.5.  All my software is up to date.
Anyone have an idea what's causing the problem??   Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply.  I'll check that.  Do you mean "let the Output Paper in LIghtroom in the left hand panel?  I had set that up as custom 13x19 but I'll check that again.
    Best.. Roberta

  • Custom Page Sizes - How to change from centimeters to Inches?

    Hello,
I'm working on some panoramic prints to an Epson R2400 and I need to set up a custom paper size for printing to roll paper. When I select Custom Page Sizes from the Page Setup dropdown, all my measurements are forced into centimeters. Even if I try and specify it to be in inches when I type in the values, I get an error saying "Invalid Number" because of the " (in mark designation).
And because the input box only allows two decimal places, I can't get accurate inches-to-centimeter conversions because the sizes I need are 3+ decimals when converted to centimeters.
Searching on the web I've come across many pages with info on the Custom Page Sizes dialog box and the images show the values being set in inches, but I've found nowhere that says where you specify where I can change this default measurement?
If anyone could help me, it'd be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

    Answering my own questions.
Because I'm Canadian, in Preferences -> International -> Formats I needed to change "Measurement Units" to "US" instead of "Metric".

  • For the life of me, I can't find out what size a photo is in terms of inches or how to change the size of the photo[s] so I can print them. I think I read somewhere to click edit, then click adjust. Nothing there about sizing.

For the life of me, I can't find out what size a photo is in terms of inches or how to change the size of the photo[s] so I can print them. I think I read somewhere to click edit, then click adjust. I don't see anything about re-sizing when I click the adjust tab: only saturation and tint levels. Thank you.

With respect to digital images, there really is no size in inches. The size is given as number of pixels horizontally and vertically. In iPhoto '09 you click the little "i" inthe lower right side of the window and it will display information related to the selected photo, including the pixel dimensions. I do not have iPhoto '11 installed so I don't know if it is the same there.
In some applications, such as preview, it has something additional called Dots per Inch (DPI) which you would think would allow you to convert the pixel dimensions to inches. It is not a real thing, though. The DPI is determined by how large or small you have chosen to print your photo and the capabilities of your printer.
There is also something called Aspect Ratio, which is usually expressed in inches x inches such as 6x9 but that doesn't mean the size on the screen or when printed is 6x9.  It is the ratio of the pixel dimensions.  When cropping your photos, you will have several standard aspect ratios to choose from plus any custom ones you create.
In iPhoto '09, after you choose Print, in the Print Setting window are the settings for the size you want the photo printed. You want to shoose a setting with the same aspect ratio of your photo. Otherwise, iPhoto will resize and/or crop your photo to fit the size you have chosen.

  • Internal dvd driver on Imac 2008 24 inches needs replacing

I have an Imac 24 inches  2007 desktop would like to replace internal  cd dvd drive not working properly lots of noise

Instead of spending the money on replacing the CD/DVD optical drive in a six year old iMac, would be quicker, easier and cheaper to purchase an external USB or FireWire optical drive
Here's a place for 100% Mac compatible optical drives.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Stay away from Apple's new external optical drive. It only works with new Macs and is not great and is overpriced for what it is.
