15" Retina dead pixels and hole in glass

After searching, it appears I'm not the only one who has encountered this issue, but I've decided to create another thread in order to bring more awareness to this issue.
Between the center and upper right corner of my 15" retina screen a stuck/dead pixel (possibly more than one) has apeared along with what appears to be a small pin hole or crater in the glass. At first, I thought there was a speck of dirt or something stuck to the screen but then realized after trying to rub it off and I believe actually getting some oils from my finger under the glass that it was more than a speck of dirt.
This, along with the common loose trackpad (that makes clicking noises) is COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE When customers pay in excess of $2000 for a computer, they expect it to last more than a year without all these issues arrising.
Since this is from the first batch of retina macbooks I am past the warranty. I will be taking it to an Apple store in hopes that they will understand and replace it.
I should also mention that I had already had the screen replaced under warranty shortly after purchasing because of multiple scattered dead pixels

I think I have same problems many buyers of MBP Retina did face. I bought the computers from an american guy living in Italy in december 2012 or close, during the first part of 2013 I noticed with horror a dead pixel appearing in the centre of the desktop. I tried some software solution to try to fix it if it was a dead pixel, finally I decided to take it to an Apple center in July 2013. There a guy took it in the back to the technicians and store manager and told me that there were a bunch of dead pixels, that although the pc was bought in the end of june 2012 in USA, and was out of warranty (one year) for some days, Apple had a zero tolerance policy for this problem and they were going to change it anyway, free of charges. I was about to leave for the summer and did ask if I was coming back in September it was the same, and he did answer yes.
Then, my fault!, I was always postponing the time to go, even because I do work with this pc, and the thought of not having it for ten days or more was leaving me really anxious.
In the meantime, another pixel, or group of dead pixels, appeared, lesse viewable then the first one, and then another huge one after some weeks... making a total of three groups of dead pixels! I finally found the time to go to the genius bar, and they just told me that they could not find traces of what happened last year ( I went to the genius bar without appointment and they did let me in anyway....), that the machine was out of warranty and that they could do nothing but to replace it for more than 500 euros. Now apart from the annoying guy who was at the genius point, which brilliant solutions, with an unwanted and sick sense of humor were to put a white desktop background and try to forget it, or to try to go to Usa to fix it, and something like that (I was extremely polite, and I can understand one guy might be tired after a whole day working, but maybe he should not work with customers so); I would like to ask if there is nothing to do about this... Ok, it is my fault, I should have returned there before, but I bought a hd to make a backup with time machine, and then I read about lots of people who did have their monitor changed and then did face the same problem, so I was waiting even in the hope they did fix this problem... It is obvious that is a manufacturing fault faced from a lot of retina displays. I had a lot of notebooks of various brands and never, never, I had this problem after I bought the items (only one time I bought one with a dead pixel, but it was not after using it), so I was not thinking of having this problem on a machine sold for more than  2000 euros... I have to take that all retina are like this? And that Apple won't do nothing about it?

  • Dead pixel and broken trackpad glass

    i've bought my new mac the last week and i all ready have a dead pixel and a broken trackpad glass.

    Was the trackpad broken right out of the box, or did you break it? If it was broken when you opened the box, why didn't you return the MBP or report the damage immediately? I doubt that you're going to get much sympathy from Apple after waiting a week to report it; they will quite reasonably assume the crack is user-caused damage. If you're extremely lucky, maybe someone at Apple will take pity on you and replace the top case for free, but I'd be surprised.
    The dead pixel is an unrelated issue, and that might get you a replacement display under your warranty if (a) you report it calmly, patiently and politely, (b) the dead pixel is in a conspicuous location on the screen, and (c) there's no evidence (other than the cracked trackpad) that the machine has been mishandled.

  • Dead pixel and something stuck between glass and LCD

    Just got a new Apple Thunderbolt Display (27-inch). As you can see from the photo below there is one dead pixel and some material stuck (that move around a little when you press the screen).
    Apple will replace this if I take it back won't they?

    You can exchange for a new one (that is what I did).  However, using suction cups you can remove the glass screen for cleaning( only held on with magnets).  Of course that will not solve the pixel being out which is unusual for TBD.

  • MBP Retina 15" dead pixel and fan issues

    I have a dead pixel in the middle of my screen and the fans are spinning at least every five to ten minutes of casual use. What should I do?

    Call Customer Support and have them replace the screen. They will send you a box to mail to depot.
    I had a MacBook Pro with a dead pixel and left speaker out. My MBP was 4 years old, definently out of warrenty. I called Apple, and they replaced the display without charge.
    I received the box on Wednesday, mailed it on Thursday (FedEx) and got my fixed MBP back on Friday, same week! This is why I still buy Apple.
    When calling customer service, stress that you have more than one pixel out, as you probably have a cluster. Have them do the repair at depot not at any Apple Store. Make sure, since you are still with 90 days, fix it for free.
    Should not be a problem.

  • Will warranty cover 1 dead pixel and an incredibly annoying screen flicker?

    Problems:
    1) I have 1 dead pixel on my iPod Touch and it's very annoying as it sticks out because the entire screen is black, and there is just this dot of light
    2) I sometimes use my iPod Touch in the dark, so this means that I keep the contrast at the lowest level, as it being too bright hurts my eyes. The problem with this is that the screen flickers between contrasts slightly and it ends up making me feel dizzy.
    I've tried turning the auto brightness option to off to prevent the above, but it doesn't make any difference. I've also tried turning the contrast slightly up too, but still it flickers slightly.
    Any advice?

    The warranty will cover a dead pixel and the flickering screen. But before we get drastic, let's do some troubleshooting. Try a hard reset by holding the home and sleep/wake button at the same time until the Apple logo appears on screen. Skip the slide to power off screen.

  • IPhones 3GS dead pixel and bad sound quality

    As i was going through some photos i notice a small white dot then looking closer to the screen i recently notice about 4 dead pixels and also when playing music through headphones the sound quality is not clear. I tested my iphone and a ipod touch with the same song and the results were the ipod touch had better sound than my phone. Can apple fix this?? Thanks

    As for dead pixels, Apple considers a small number as unavoidable with LCD displays and covers only a "high number" under the warranty. Apple would have to inspect the phone and determine if it's a covered defect. Make an appointment with an Apple Store Genius Bar.

  • Dead Pixels and Screen Burn

    Well, I have been the "proud" of a new Aluminum 24 inch iMac since August of 07. Recently I noticed that I have gain ONE dead pixel and some screen burn issues, mainly when I close our iChat after it has been running for a couple hours.
    1. Should I worry about this?
    2. Would Apple even consider replacing my display?

    Well... I would imagine that you wouldn't be able to return it or replace it because of screen burn-in... as that is considered 'wear and tear'. Kinda like taking your car back to the dealership because the tread is wearing down on your tires.
    As for the dead pixel... I would imagine Apple would have been more willing to replace it for you if you had mentioned it in the first 14 days. But since you've had it since August, and just now seeing pixel issues... I don't think it would be covered.
    If you really want to get it fixed... take it to your Apple store, see what they say... worse happens, you pay to get the screen fixed... which is cheaper than buying a replacement Mac.
    Keep us updated on what you do and when/if you get it fixed.

  • Apple Macbook Pro 15 Retina dead pixel explosion

    I have a 3 month old MBP Retina 15.
    The display but has been plagued with problems. The 1st screen started developing 3 dead pixels (2 larger) at 1.5 months and the Regent St store arranged a replacement display. The duty supervisor on the day said 'dead pixels are normal' and 'these are very hard displays to get right'. They are not encouraging   it is not 'normal' for a new laptop costing £1800 to develop such issues.
    The 2nd screen has now developed a dead pixel explosion. It was 4 the last time I counted. Such screen degradation is very worrying and I notice some other forum members have experienced similar issues. I would assume it is a certain batch of displays that is causing this issue?
    If the display didn't degrade so quickly, I could say it was an excellent laptop with superb display clarity but I can't in the circumstances. I have now booked a 2nd appointment at the genius bar and I don't wish to be told again that this is to be expected with such displays. Apple have a reputation to uphold on quality and reliability. I've never had these issues with my Thinkpads over the years.

    I would think that you might have an argument for a replacement machine... if after three trips the machine still isn't operating properly, I would contact Apple Customer Relations and explain to them that instead of repairing the machine time and again, you'd like a replacement.

  • Dead Pixel and Frayed Charger

    Hey guys.Let me start off buy saying that I **do** have AppleCare as of now. I've had my MacBook Pro Retina 13" Laptop for about 1-2 years and I haven't had much to complain about.
    However, my laptop's charger has started to fray and charging my laptop has become quite difficult. Here is a picture.
    My second problem is quite annoying as well. I have a single dead pixel on the screen of my MacBook. The white dot on the middle of the screen is the one dead pixel on the screen.
    My question to you guys is if both of these things will be covered by AppleCare? I'm fairly confident that Apple will replace my charger but I want to know if they would fix my screen as well? Thanks!

  • Screen has black/dead pixels and line across screen.

    My iphone is still under its one year warranty. I can not recall any drops or it ever being handled roughly, however I have a black/gray blob of dead pixels in the left corner and my screen has a shiny line that looks like a crack of the LCD, however the glass screen is not cracked in any way that I can tell. I think the dead pixels are spreading as well. Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know if this is under warranty? I live over an hour and a half from the nearest apple store so I really don't want to take a special trip to see a genius only to find out that I will have to pay $200 to get this fixed. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

    If it is still under warranty, they should replace the screen without charging you. The same thing happened to me a few months ago and they replaced it for free. You might have to make the long trip to the store but they shouldn't charge you and it will take about 30 minutes. Call to make an appointment first if you plan to go to the apple store.

  • MBP 13" Dead Pixel and Loose Keys

    Hi All,
    Just had the excitement of unwrapping my newly delivered 13" Macbook Pro by finding a dead pixel (upper left hand corner) and several loose keys (TAB, SPACEBAR, and ENTER).
    I tried Jscreenfix, but that was no help for the dead pixel. The loose keys are very annoying. The TAB key feels like it could fly off any moment and you can tell it's substantially looser then the rest of the keys. It doesn't have much spring and you can jiggle the whole key around by pushing on one of the corners. Same goes for the spacebar and enter key.
    Anyone else have similar problems? Anyone have an opinion as to whether I have any chance of having my local Apple Store swap this out for me? I purchased the MBP at the online store. It was the stock configuration (no customization).

    Let us know what happens, my MacBook Pro 13" arrived with a dent right outta the box! (it makes me question the quality control levels at the factory, because it didn't happen during transit).
    Anyway, even thought the online store had more in stock, they said it would take 3 weeks for me to get a replacement sent out

  • Dead pixel and dust!

    Hey guys,
    Got a new macbook in december- there's a large piece of dust to the right of the camera in the black frame around the screen and a dead pixel in the middle right of the screen (its red, only shows up on darker images). Really annoying and, frankly, I don't like the idea of paying top dollar for these sort of blemishes. Will apple exchange my laptop for stuff such as this, or does there have to be more than just 1 dead pixel? This early in the laptop's life, dead pixels shouldn't be happening, considering I've never had another dead pixel in any of my 4 other mac laptops and 2 desktops. Any advice?

    If it's red, it's not "dead" but rather "stuck" (on). Because there's actually 1,024,000 pixels and 3,072,000 sub-pixels, Apple does not usually consider one stuck sub-pixel worthy of a repair or replacement. In fact, several stuck or dead pixels must be located near each other before it's considered defective. Check out this Knowledge Base Article:

    You may be able to take it in and find a sympathetic Mac Genius or AASP to get it replaced. If you had purchased the MacBook from Apple and returned it within 14 days for any reason, you could have gotten your money back less a 10% restocking fee. You could have then purchased a different MacBook. However, since it's definitely been more than 14 days, depending on where you purchased it, you may not be able to return it now.
    The dust may be a different story. However, unless it affects the functionality of the computer, Apple does not usually make repairs or replacements for "cosmetic" problems.

  • Pulsating 'dead' pixel and electricity usage

    Hello,
    Anyone knows the electricy usage in Watts for this new apple cinema display? I'm particularly interested to find out to max usage .e.g when it's charging macbook pro and off w/o charging.
    On the second thought, I just got my display yesterday. I got a unit that has multiple (> 7) pulsating dead pixel. This is quite interesting, as a dead pixel usually either stays black or white or a specific color. In the first unit, I notice that a dead pixel stays for 2-3 seconds, gone then comes again.
    The second unit has the same issue but less in quantity, so I got it. Anyone knows about this 'pusalting' dead pixel? couldn't find in search.
    Lastly, are there difference manucfaturer of the display? The MBP has Chi Mei and LG.

    I have never seen pulsating pixels on mine. I only have one single red stuck pixel and that's it.
    No idea about the display manufacturer.

    Your sales receipt is needed for Apple's 1-year limited warranty and AppleCare Protection Plan validation, so be sure to keep it in a safe place. Apple's 1-year limited warranty is the same whether or not you register.
