15" studio display - colored stripes

Hi,
Please excuse my lack of technical knowledge. I was just given a G4 (used to use one at work) with a 15" Apple Studio Display LCD. When I turned the display on, I got a lovely display of stripes of various colors. Each time I turn it on, the colors/width/intensity changes.
Is this the disply in its death throes, or is it the G4's video card (as someone pointed out to me)?
Help! I love the G4 but it would be better to be able to use it!

  • Studio Display 17" for coloring??

    Hi
Could anyone help me? I'm doing video editing, and planning to get a color correct monitor.. But they are really expensive, i cant afford them. And i found a 17" studio disp for cheap. And what i'm thinking about is buying that, and using an other normal eg Samsung 24" too. The Apple Studio display only for checking the color, and the other for editing (as Apple color needs 1920/1280 display..)
Do you think its a workin idea? Can I connect the old studio display nvidia gef9400? and will leopard use it well? is it worth?
    thank you guys!

Yes, it is harmless. The CRT itself has the potential to act as a high voltage capacitor, but the charge bleeds off eventually, in no more than a few days. The charge can be built up again by static electricity. For example, if you took a wool sweater and vigorously rubbed the glass screen, the CRT bottle capactior could again find a high voltage charge on it. But I am sure you don't plan on doing that.

  • Apple Studio 17" Display colors not right after thunderstorm

Noticed this afternoon, after a thunderstorm, that my 17" Apple Studio Display was not displaying colors correctly. All windows are reversed - white background is now black and text is white. Also photos look like 35mm negatives. My blue Apple standard background is now orange. I checked the Display section in the System Preferences and did the ColorSync calibration and troubleshooting (verify and repair). None of this has any affect. Any suggestions?

    Try Control-Command-Option-8
or select "Black on White" in the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" system preference.

  • Color Bars all over my Studio Display Occuring steady

Just turned on the computer, and my screen is full of different colored vertical bars, and weird tings everywhere. Did several restarts, no changes? All has been fine until this???
I have not installed any new hardware or software lately.
Help needed please. Thanks for all suggestions.
    I'm a G5 1.8 Dual OS10.4.6
It appears that the desktop is on screen, but very difficult to be usuable except the pull down menus are slightly visable. I did try a restart holding the shift key down...but the same mess came up only without the desktop behind the bars..think it was the log on page.

I too have an Apple 21" Studio Display. I love it as it is very accurate for print based graphic design.
I also get the weird color bars. Used to work fine on my G4, but on my G5 dual 2g I get the weirdness. Could be the VGA to DVI deal.
I remedy this by going to the display preferences and changing the resolution to another setting. That clears the mess and then I change it back.
Simple and quick! Other than that I have no perminant answer.

  • Studio Display 21" with Mac Mini?

I am considering getting a Mac Mini as an economical upgrade to my B/W G3 system but I want to make sire that my monitor is going to work with it. I have the origingal blue and white 21" Studio Display. the System Profiler says this......
    Displays:
    Studio Display 21:
    Display Type: CRT
    Resolution: 1152 x 870 @ 75 Hz
    Depth: 32-bit Color
    Core Image: Not Supported
    Main Display: Yes
    Mirror: Off
    Online: Yes
    Quartz Extreme: Not Supported
Will this display work with a new Mac Mini? I really do not have the $ right now to get a new Monitor and this one works great anyway. I am also wondering how my current software,,,,,,, Photoshop,Indesign etc. will work with the new Intel Macs?
    THanks for any input
    MyShunshyn

Can't help on the screen much - believe you need to get an adapter, as the previous post indicated. You might check in the Apple dislay area at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=111
Regarding your applications, as long as you're not running under OS 9 or earlier, your applications will run on the Intel mini under Rosetta emulation. Universal applications are those that have been modified to run on both the PPC and Intel macs, and they run natively. Those applications that have not been made universal run under Rosetta emulation. Photoshop is an example of an application that has not been made universal yet (supposed to happen this year with Photoshop CS3). Running under emulation does extract a performance penalty, of up to 50%, versus running in native universal mode.
If you have applications running under OS9 or in the OS X classic environment, you'll need to upgrade to an OS X version in order to run on the Intel-based mini, and you may find there are Universal versions of your software, which would be even better.

  • Apple Studio Display 21inch - calibration fails

G'day all, I've reviewed the topics on this display and none seem to fit my problem. Further, I'm convinced that it's not a display problem but an OS Tiger 10.4.11 problem but I reckon that this is the forum that will be best suited to answer.
In essence, the problem is that a get an overly white screen with very bold colours - as if the contrast and brightness is on steroids and I cannot get past the first page of the ColorSync Assistant. This condition occurred as a result of allowing a service technician to use my Mac to set up a satellite modem - you'd hope that technicians would be more responsible . . . . .
Anyhow, as I said, I'm convinced that the problem has more to do with OS 10.4.11 than the display as this works perfectly with another user. Specifically, the technician was logged in as PowerMacUser (isn't that original?) and that is the user which gets a problem display. If I log in as another user (i.e. PowerCenterUser - yes! there's one of these on the network) then the screen is normal and I can calibrate the display. So ColorSynch and the Studio Display are working.
But when I log in again as PowerMacUser nothing has changed. I did make sure that the color profiles in the Computer/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Display were the same as those used for PowerCenterUser even though they are global, but that didn't make any difference. And I have tried to find out where user-specific data is used to modify display profiles but without success.
I have a suspicion that it may have something to do with a file named <boot> but I won't pursue this unless I have a prod to so do.

This is an update. I'm a bit impatient so I got up at 02:30 and did some more research.
I found that the file boot.efi was still in my trash (OldUsers . .System>Library>CoreServicesboot.efi) and followed BDAqua's excellent advice in regard to this (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11661635&#11661635).
Thus I verified both discs in the PowerMac,did a Safe boot - which failed to correct the colour problem. I then reinstalled Mac OS 10.4 - which failed to correct the colour problem and I'm now in the process of bringing this up to OS 10.4.11.
The only approach that I can think of now is to create a new user since users other than PowerMacUser (see previous post) do not experience the colour problem.
Any, more creative, ideas would be welcome.

  • Apple 21" studio Display monitor-help

I have a G4 and just got an apple 21" studio display monitor
I work in photoshop CS2 what do I put the resolution at? Color and refresh?
what should the white point and gamman be? what should the profile on themonitor display?
I WENT INTO THE PREFERENCES AND LOOKED AT THE DISPLAY..THANKS..JAN

(for my photos the service I use said to use sRGB the resolution)....
Then open CS2 and under Photoshop scroll down to Color Settings, go to Work Space and set the RGB tab to sRGB. At the top of the menu under Monitor it should be your Apple 21" Display.
If it is not then it will change after you calibrate the monitor. Open System Preferences/Desktop and change your desktop to a medium gray (you can change it back after you make the necessary color corrections). Now choose Display, select your preferred screen resolution, and millions of color. Now choose Color from the upper tab to Calibrate the monitor. If you check the box "Show profile for this display only" the menu will be simplified. Now select Calibrate and use the professional mode. Just follow the on screen instructions and do all of the color setting using the 1.8 gamma and native whiter point.
After the monitor is calibrated you will be asked to save and name the calibration. I would recommend a name similar but different from the default Apple 21" Display setting, you can even include the date if you calibrate often.
Reopen Photoshop and check the Work Space the RGB/Monitor the setting should be your recent selected calibration.

  • MacBookPro 3.1 display is negative mode, Apple Studio Display is positive

When I have the laptop hooked up to the Apple Studio Display 17", all of a sudden, the 'polarity' switched on the display. That is to say it displayed the opposite color mode from the laptop.
I can switch back and forth from positive(regular) to negative using the universal access preference control panel. How do I get the monitor and the laptop to agree?

Hi, the problem is a combination of Boot Camp 2.1 and the ADC->DVI box. I've described a solution here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7211956&#7211956
    Basically:
    [1] Plug everything in normally
[2] Boot into Mac OS X
[3] Set brightness to what you want (eg. in System Prefs, or via keyboard)
[4] Unplug the USB cable belonging to the ADC->DVI adaptor (this means anything plugged into the monitor now won't work, so you may need to also move peripherals from the monitor to the mac, or to a USB hub)
[5] Boot into Windows (XP SP2 or SP3 in my case)
[6] cue "I can see clearly now the rain has gone"
    The disadvantages to this are:
[1] You're a USB socket down on the deal (the display gave you 2 but took up 1, now you only have the 1 that it was being plugged into)
[2] To readjust brightness (if you find yourself doing this regularly... I don't) you need to go Mac OS X-> plug cable back in -> adjust brightness -> remove cable -> reboot into XP.
For me (2007 Mac Pro, 23" stripey Apple Cinema Display with ADC->DVI adaptor) it was happening under an ATI 1900XT and also under an Nvidia 8800GT, each time I'd tried reformatting the Windows partition, reinstalling Windows XP etc. Whenever it was Boot Camp 2.0.x it was fine, but adding Boot Camp 2.1 to the party wrecked the brightness. XP SP3 made no difference whatsoever.
Of note, if you'd rather not sacrifice the USB port (it didn't bother me, as 2.1 also made my 802.11n network finally usable under XP, which was more important to me than losing a USB socket), the original poster in the above linked article suggested reinstalling the Boot Camp 2.0 drivers (from the Leopard disc) as an alternative fix (seemingly they'll overwrite anything Boot Camp 2.1 installed, thus "rewinding"). As I say, for me I needed the wireless network so didn't want to go back, but it might work for you as a 2nd route.
I've filed a bug on this, so let's hope the Boot Camp team knock out a fix soon,
    Ken

  • Apple Studio Display 17" darker bottom half

I have an apple studio display 17" as a second screen for my
MacBook Pro 15", somehow it has darker colors on the bottom half of it, don't know the reason, is it magnetized?
    Please Help.

Sometimes those ports just die. Wouldn't be the first time.
Other times, it is the ADC connector that is the issue.
    Try replugging the ADC connector.

  • Older Studio Display Problem

I have an older (clear base & grey/white stripe) Apple Studio Display hooked into an older 2GHz PowerPC G5 running 10.4.11. I went to turn the machine on as usual by touching the sensor on the display. The machine turns on, but nothing displays. Checked connector, still same problem. Hooked old CRT into other slot on card (GeForce FX 5200) via ADC adapter, and that works, but nothing on ASD. System Profiler recognizes the ASD, says it's on online, but no picture on screen. Any help would be appreciated.

Personally, it sounds like the back light went out. I don't think it is worth fixing. Go splurge on a 24" Apple LCD Display

  • Used Apple Studio Display, Possibly Ruined

    Hello all,
I purchased a used Apple Studio Display a few days ago and thought nothing of it at the time (I was picking up some used Macs for friends, and it was an afterthought). I figured, what the h*ll.
So anyway, I finally hooked it up, and was very impressed with the color calibration and overall usefulness of the monitor. The problem was it was very dirty and covered with scratches.
So, not knowing any better, I proceeded to use some glass cleaner on it, and this got a lot of black residue off the screen, which made things look noticeably cleaner. The bad news was that this was a lot of work, and I was looking for a more "quick and dirty" (poor choice of words, I suppose) method of getting it cleaned up. So I pulled out the "Goo Gone," a commercial product that smells a bit like oranges but which also has some petroleum distillates in it.
Anyway, long story short: Although the window cleaner and the craptastic miracle cleaner did a bang-up job insofar as the removal of the black matter, there are a few areas of the screen where I was a little too vigorous and have buffed the shine away, leaving a blurred image underneath. Who knew that the screen had a protective plastic coating? Not me, I suppose.
So I've googled around for some kits to repair the mistake I have made, and I'm coming up empty. I see multitudinous products for cleaning the monitor, and of course I wish I had found them before I endeavored to clean this monitor (it was disgusting, I tell you! Even with the blurring, it's still an improvement!). I still can't find a product to make this puppy shine like it's supposed to.
There remain a few noticeable scratches on the monitor, and of course I would like to buff those out if possible, but most importantly, I'd like to be able to get back the clarity I thought I was heading for (before I cleaned a little too hard!).
Responses chiding me for my overzealous cleaning behavior are discouraged, as I am primarily interested in climbing out of the hole I'm in, not in getting shoved further down it.
    Thanks in advance,
    Art

Well, I'm going to go ahead and answer my own question.
I attempted to take apart the monitor to take out the smudged glare screen. I was unsuccessful; it's glued directly to the glass in such a way that its removal would have made things much worse.
When I put it all back together, the monitor no longer worked!
Oh well, easy come, easy go.

  • 21" Studio Display geometry is missing

So, I just hooked up a new 21" Studio Display (CRT) to replace my old one and when I go to Preferences>Displays the geometry is missing. Only Display and Color are the choices. It was there before when the old monitor (the same type, a 21" Studio Display) was hooked up. What could have happened to the preferences just by attaching a new monitor?
I tried reinstalling the display software (which I still have from when I bought the original monitor) and installing the software Apple Displays 1.7.1, but it won't install on System X (10.3.9) Anyone have a suggestion?

    Hi JayJay,
Have you tried restarting with the display connected?
I suspect the problem is probably the Display, which given its age, probably isn't worth spending too much money on.. Maybe you could get someone knowledgable about servicing to try to make one working display out of these two non-working ones.

  • Studio display 21 needs geometry fixed; use G3?

I have a 19" studio display 21. Yep, and the color is excellent. But the geometry is wacky.
There are no controls for that on MacPro OSX.6. Can I hook it up to the original G3 and reset
those parameters? Will they "stick" when I return it to the MacPro??
    Thanks !!

Yes, the settings should stick. They get held in NVRAM.

  • Colored stripes on my screen

Problem with Mavericks. Various colored stripes on my screen. They disappear after a restart but they come back after some hours.

This sounds like an issue with your display. The next time they appear, take a screenshot. If they do not appear appear on your screenshot, it is display related. If they do appear on your screenshot, it is related to your graphics processor. I highly suspected the former. Both are hardware issues and both are pricey fixes out of warranty, but a faulty display is cheaper to fix than a faulty logicboard. Best of luck.
