150 points in two years: Advice

Over the past couple years, my CS has gone from in the mid-500s to between 704 and 731, depending what’s consulted. Within the next 10 months, my two lates will be more than four years old, and my lone other derog will drop off. But what I’m posting to tell you is your CS isn’t all that important, or at the very least shouldn’t be your lone or main focus; it’s what’s known as a “lagging indicator.” Can’t buy that car or house now? Can’t get that cc with the super rewards? Tough tooties. You should do some hard digging and pruning on other things first. Those things are budgeting and your debt-to-income ratio. First a couple words about your income. I’m quite fortunate that my income has gone up about 25% in the past two years. And, no doubt, that fact certainly helped my ability to improve my credit score. More income means you have more options, but it’s hardly a guarantee of success. Wealthy people can be the most overleveraged. I run a financial literacy program for immigrants and some – not all – of them can budget and buy a house when make $9.50 an hour. So, the things you should focus on. You should know your debt-to-income ratio. This is the percentage of your gross income (income before taxes) that goes into debt payments, be they mortgage, credit cards, school loans, etc. I won’t go further into the calculation, as this is readily available. But if your DTI is over 40%, you are going to have a hard time digging out of that hole. If this is the case, this should trigger the hardest of decision. Rent out your house and live with your mom even though your 50 if you have to. Sell your car and take the bus to work. Moreover, even more than increasing your credit score, getting your DTI as low as possible will greatly improve your life. You’ll have tons more money left over. You can save up and buy things rather than taking out a CL and paying interest. My current DTI is a pretty high 34%. But I have a car loan and a couple of student loans with IRs ranging from .6% to 2.8%. Even though I focus on my DTI and would love to get them paid off tomorrow, I know I only have 2.5 years left on the car loan and five on the student loans. So, in good time, I’ll be freer – at a DTI of a very healthy 18% or so. After that, I seriously plan on never taking out another major loan except perhaps refinancing into a 15-year mortgage. The next thing you need to focus on is your budget. Start by keeping a monthly budget, and updating what you have spent every week. Excel has a pretty good generic spreadsheet, “Family Budget” that you can tweak to your needs with limited computer skills. The first step in meditation is to observe yourself breathing. Likewise, the first step in budgeting should simply be to watch how much money you take in and how much money you spend in each budget category. Don’t make any major changes the first month or so. Just watch. You’ll soon have some things jump out of you on your spreadsheet. For example, I was spending an inordinate amount of money on eating out, my morning coffee and bagel, and books and music. In fact, it was all going out faster than it was coming in. No wonder I was having problems making payments. Once you find out the trouble areas, do something about them. A lot of my eating out was simply about laziness, not enjoyment. So, I began doing much more grocery shopping. I also started focusing on reading the books I have before buying more. Voila, I began to have some money left over. I’d also recommend in as much as you can, using your ATM card rather than a CC. Obviously, for others, this may involve some harder decisions: a cheaper daycare for the kid, a different living arrangement, etc. I will also note, make sure you are putting away for your retirement. At the very least, if your employer matches your contribution, you should be getting the maximum match. When I started to focus on my DTI and personal budget after a few months, a funny thing started to happen. My credit score began going up. Slowly. There were months it would flatline, and then have a modest jump and then flatline again. I tried GWLs to all the creditors I had lates for, and they either didn’t respond at all or responded with a form letter. Yet, after I had months of steady payments, I disputed the lates and most of my creditors just erased them. The other funny thing is, even though my CS will probably go up another 30-40 points in the next year, I don’t really care. The important things are your DTI, budgeting, and investing in appreciating assets (i.e. home, retirement).

Excellent post! We just made some *hard* decisions regarding financial reality. It required sacrifice but also some benefits! I want to learn all I can. I was like an English major so this is not my nature but I'm good at running stuff down. I want to learn investment etc. too and the best thing about this Forum is learning, I've learned so much and feel less panicky. Can you recommend anything else besides Excel? I am not a spreadsheet person. Mint.com was confounding also. I do want to do a better job of budgeting. Financial Literacy? That sounds interesting. As I learn more, I'd love to help other people because I found it all so overwhelming and intimidating.

Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive (the drive itself, not the volume icons below it.) Is the SMART status "Verified?" If not, replace the drive immediately. If the status is "Verified," the drive may still be failing. Back up all data, if you haven't already done so. Reinstall Mac OS X, then run Software Update. Test with all wired peripherals disconnected. If it's still slow, you have a hardware problem.

  • Glass broke a month shy of two years. need advice on best course of action!

The glass on my iphone broke with one month to go before the two year service contract is up. I was planning on buying a new iphone in november. IS there an incentive to wait a month? I think so but I a not sure what it is. If I buy a new one now, before my contract expires, what advantages am I forfeiting?
Thank you in advance for you time, should you have any answers.

You mean call AT&T... Yes, that makes sense. But avoiding that fate... that would be nice, too. Maybe it wont be so bad.

  • I need to cancel a line that is no longer used but I'm told that, since I transferred an upgrade from the unused line, the contract on the unused line was extended by two years.  If I need to cancel both to get out of this, so be it but I'd rather not and

I'm paying for 2 smartphone lines when only one is in use.  It's a waste of money that I can no longer afford.  I would like for someone to present me with options or I will have to seek an alternate service provider.

Ok so now there are presumptions of both my ignorance and my dishonesty.  This has become the most surreal conversation I've had in some time.  I've been a VZW customer for over 10 years and no, this is not something I've ever done before.  In the past, if I wanted a new phone before my 2-year deal was up, I paid full price for the phone and kept living.  That's how the system works, right?  In this instance, I had two lines on my account, each with different contract end dates.  The secondary account was 6 months out-of-contract and unused but, for personal reasons, I kept the line in force.  The person who used the account setup another account with VZW with another phone.  But I kept the line active, just in case.
In the meantime, when reviewing my account online, I noticed an option on the secondary account of "Transfer upgrade".  Given my understanding of the definition of the word "transfer" as well as my previous dealings with VZW phone upgrades, it seemed logical that, since both phones were under the same master account, the upgrade with its requisite contract extension would apply to the line that actually used the upgrade eligibility.  It was therefore, my expectation that the primary line would either have two years tacked on to its current end date or, at the very least the contract end date for the primary line would be 2 years out from the date the upgrade was exercised.  Both options were acceptable to me since, at that point, I was not considering the termination of my relationship with VZW.  I knew I needed a phone with more battery life than the one I had and carrying one of those battery charge packs around wouldn't work for me.  So, I clicked the transfer upgrade button on the secondary account.  I then saw the primary account show as eligible for an upgrade.  At that point, I upgraded the phone on the primary account.  There was no point where I was notified of a 2 year extension on the secondary account and, once I clicked the "Transfer upgrade" link, there was no mention of or reference to the secondary account.
I'm not sure of who I'm replying to or where they are from so I cannot speak to the people they encounter on a day to day basis.  I have not stated nor do I have any desire to get away with a free early upgrade.  It should be noted that we are discussing a discounted upgrade, not a free phone.  I still paid $150 for the phone and was happy to do it.  However, this idea that I'm trying to circumvent the system is offensive.  I'm not trying to get away with anything.  As I've said in previous posts, I expected to burn discounted upgrade eligibility on the primary line for a minimum of 2 years.  I actually expected the new contract end date to be 3 years away, which would have been more than fair for all concerned.  Fairness, it seems, is running in short supply.
If all you have to say is that I'm stupid, ignorant, or dishonest, please don't bother to reply.  If you can in some way help to bring this to a satisfactory resolution, I'm all ears.  Can you hear me now?  Good.

  • Two years of intermittent broadband faults

After two years of intermitent faults countless calls to Bt, 3 engineer visits , all engineers agree i have intermittent fault. Today the engineer visited and said he thought he may have found a problem and said it would be all good, LOL NOW I HAVE NO PHONE LINE .
TWENTY YEARS PLUS customer with Bt but will never recomend them again until i have somthing to recomend .

OK, so this is a community forum, where we can all vent and propose our own suggestions to other BT customers with similar problems.
Its quite funny how we are all technical support these days, often knowing a good deal more than the customer care people we are dealing with, but lacking any access to get the problems resolved.  Customer Care seems to be a barrier to that access, rather than the gateway.
Anyway, my point is that when I had a plain 1Mbps Broadband Service, it was better than now.  Pages loaded a little slower, but it was RELIABLE.   Then WiFi got all complicated, and I struggle to get a strong signal just metres from my hub.  Simply walk to another room or round the corner and you lose 75% of the signal - it really seems to be line of sight these days.
Now I have 5Mbps to the Hub - luxury, except that the uplink back to the exchange is slower than a dial-up modem at <100kbs.   I am lucky if I re-boot the hub to get 400kbps uplink, but then it drops every HOUR.
This lack of reliability is worse than the slower link.
I am awaiting an engineer to 'check my external wiring' which has not changed in 10 years.  This was after having the riot act read to me about being charged if they can somehow make it my fault instead.
I had been having problems with the Hub2 being very poor and unable to handle Port Forwarding or DHCP tables, and it took 2 years to get a replacement Hub (v4).  Definitely quicker interface and smarter hub, but the link has been bouncing about all over the place for weeks now.
On the plus side, the call to 150 on the phone got me to a real Customer Care person within a few minutes, and they stayed on the call and they escalated it.  First time for 5 years I think.  The uplink was SOO bad the online chat stood no chance.
    Lets see what happens.

My itunes is on an old computer.  So old that I can't update it and so Haven't used it in two years.  How can I move it to my new laptop and make sure this doesn't happen again?  Very frustrated that I've spend $$ but can't get my music.
I want so set up itunes on my laptop and make sure that I get all of my old music and any music shared from my sons' itunes accounts.  Do I have to set up itunes on my new laptop first and then use the same logins?  Really concerned about losing any music, etc.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • IDVD changes encoding quality in the middle of burning a DVD.  This causes the DVD to run out of room for longer projects.  This worked fine for the past two years, and in the past few weeks it started having this problem.

Here are details on the problem:  I'm running iDVD 7.1.2 on an iMac that uses OS 10.6.8.  After about two years of using iDVD to burn both single- and dual-layer disks, I find I can no longer burn dual-layer disks.  When I put in a dual-layer disk and try to burn a project, the project size keeps increasing.  For instance, I recently tried to burn a project that was just over 4GB and, when I stopped the project part-way through, the project size read as 6.89GB.  If I don't stop the project in time, the blue bar that indicates burning status reaches the end (so that all of it is blue) before the time listed has elapsed and the disk ejects but cannot be recognized by the computer or our dvd player.  If I then go to the project menu and switch the encoding from Professional Quality to Best Performance and back again, the program "remembers" the actual file size - but, if I try to burn the project again, I have the increasing same problem.  If I let the project go until the disk ejects, the project menu will then read some total in the red (i.e., above the size that a dl disk will burn, even though the actual file size is below the limit).  I believe (perhaps 90% sure) this began after I tried to encode a movie with subtitles; instead of burning properly, this movie created a data disk with at least one folder that said something about VIDEO_TS, if I recall correctly.

To be a true video DVD the disk must be in the UDF format (Universal Disk Format) and must have a AUDIO_TS folder (empty) and VIDEO_TS folder (where all the elements of the DVD are located).
The content on a DVD is MPG-2 encoded and it is quite possible for the encoded size of your content to exceed the estimated project size - especially if you use lots of transitions and content encoded with CODECS more recent than mpg-2 (which is quite old at this point).
The safest thing to do is to make your 'burn' to a disk image file - then you know everything went fine before you commit to burning a disk,  I know the instructions warn about creating a disk image file for dual-layer projects, but I've never had any problems and don't recall hearing anyone here who had problems.

  • Would you please help  me in cleaning my two years old mac book pro

my computer is two years old. i vist many sites and as a result it has
gradually become very slow.is there any advice please?

You are posting in the developer forum. This is a quiet corner of the forums where few people will see your post. If you give us some details about your setup, we can get your post moved to a more appropriate forum.
A good way to do that eould be to try a little program I wrote a little diagnostic program to help show what might be causing these problems. Download EtreCheck from http://www.etresoft.com/download/EtreCheck.zip, run it, and paste the results here.
The output from EtreCheck will say what forum your post need to go into and, perhaps, what your problem is.

  • HT1212 After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub.  I have tried everything I can think of to get it working again but to no avail.  My desktop computer still works through the same hub

After working perfectly for two years my iTouch has suddenly stopped connecting to my Hub although my desktop computer still connects.  I have tried everything I can think of, including suggestions off Google/You Tube but nothing makes any difference.  Any ideas.  Surely it is not fit for the scrap heap after two years, but is clearly no use as it is.

Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem and it does not connect to any networks make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Closing Accounts less than two years old

Is it better to wait two years before closing an account?  I have a few accounts with Credit One, Merrick Bank, and FNBO that I am contemplating closing.  The Credit One has reached two years but the other two accounts are one years old.  My concern is If I close them before they are at least 24 months will they still be considered r "new accounts" in my overall credit profile.

There is no basis in fact for that per Barry Paperno former My Fico Administrator. I would not close anything prior to it reaching 7 months of age as its well known new credit underwriters consider an account to be new for its first 6 months. Quote directly from Barry Paperno "There's no 24 month rule having to do with closed and/or new accounts or even any true definition of a new account for that matter. As with all score calculations, there are various thresholds, whether dollars or months or numbers, where the number of points increases or decreases when crossed. For time triggered factors, one threshold could very well be 24 months, just at it could also be 12, 36, 48 months, etc. Not sure why 24 months has caught on in this way, but it might just be that it's a relatively manageable time period to track - and it sort of sounds logical. Other than that, you got me!"

  • After updating to OS 10.9.2 Safari shows two year old Bookmarks?!

After updating to OS 10.9.2 Safari shows two year old Bookmarks.
My Sysad reconstructed the actual bookmarks this morning from the backup.
Than I tried to delete a single bookmark and right now Safari shows again the two years old bookmarks?!

Happen to me too. Looks like a Bug. Installed 10.9.2 and it turned on Safari in the iCloud Sytem Preferences.
Thank god I had a backup. And then my wife logged into the same computer and it messed them up again.
I wish I knew where the iCloud bookmark file was. I've tried goggling it, ut no luck.
So If at one point in time if you turn it on it uploads the bookmark file somewere in the cloud, then you turn it off then change your bookmarks to something differnet it's OK. Just don't turn it on again.
Hopefully the bug was on the software update!

  • Bug? My events on the iPad iCal app aren't shown in the year view if they are more than two years in the future.

My events on the iPad iCal app aren't shown in the year view if they are more than two years in the future even though I can see them on the month, week and day view. Any suggestions on how to fix it? I've tried it all. I called the apple support and they checked on their iPads. They all did the same and they couldn't help me. They suggested trying this way. I'd like to be able to plan a few years ahead and the year view would make thing so easy!
    Is this a bug?

Go to the Home screen and double click the Home button. That will reveal the row of recently used apps at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on the app in question until it wiggles and displays a minus sign. Tap the minus sign to actually quit the app. Then tap anywhere on the screen above that bottom row to return the screen to normal. Then restart the app and see if it works normally.
Then reboot your iPad. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPad restart. See if that fixes your problem.

What happens when the iPod is plugged in?  anything?  any errors?
Why is 50GB of music gone?  All music should exist on the computer.  Only a fool would rely on a single device which could easily be lost or stolen to store their content on.
