16:9 anamorphic quicktime file?

im trying to save a 16:9 project in FCP as a full res Quicktime .dv file so i can then import it into imovie ... but everytime i try and save it, when i import it in imovie just shows it as a stretched 4:3 file...
can anyone tell me what i need to change to have imovie pop it out to fill the widescreen frame as it should, rather the pillarboxing it is doing...?

you might try compressor after exporting a movie current settings from fcp, maybe compressor works better for you out of FCP however in compressor throw the DV setting on it then in the inspector window select file format, select dvstream and select 16:9 aspect ratio

Downscaling animation from HD targa to anamorph quicktime

Hi
I'm trying to figure out what the best and safest way is to downscale HD (1920x1080) targa image sequences to 1024x576 or anamorph quicktime. As we need to deliver the production on digibeta, but keeping the door open for HD deliveries in the future.
I decided to downscale the targa frames to the right size to avoid sluggish editing and gigantic amounts of diskspace, and I can reconnect the edits to HD files if needed.
I've decided to use Graphicconverter for this job as the batch converter can do the complete job automaticaly, and there's several different settings for downscaling. I tested and found out that the 'lanczos3' setting works best on thin lines etc.
Now the fastest way to use quicktimes from these targa's would be to save the image sequences as quictime (not the export) creating a movie file in the tga (uncompressed)format. If I use these in fcp with a sequence on tga codec I don't have to render and the uncompressed files play reasonably well. I could also export the sequences in animation codec which is high quality, but it takes more time of course. You'll probably advise me to use intermediate instead but I've checked quality, and it's not as good as 'animation'.. for animation. Or am I doing something wrong ?
Another way of working would be to just edit everything in HD in the first place and downscale it during rendering. anyone has any experience with this ? Are there any settings to consider in fcp for this job (without screwing up thin lines)
The problem here would be that uncompressed tga quicktimes down play smoothly in fcp. So I would have to export it all with animation codec, and editing would probably go slower due to the size.
Anyone has any tips for me ?

Kanna -- who did all the hard work -- has found an import change Apple made in 8.0.1. It appears that Apple decided that since HDV camcorders always claim the footage is 1080i -- that it would modify the way FULL works. Even though the video becomes 1920x1080 AIC -- when the files are used in editing they are automatically BOB deinterlaced losing about 30% of its vertical resolution.
Because it's progressive you can safely add all FX!
And, the quality is still much better than importing at LARGE where about 40% is lost on both dimensions.
Apple, with HDV, simply ignores the data that my iMakeFullHD modifies.
PS1: I now suspect that rather than discarding a field as has been claimed to happen with DV -- DV is really BOB deinterlaced.
PS2: Kana's work also opens a window into how v8.0.1 changed how AVCHD. When imported at FULL, I suspect 1080i is NOT chopped to 960x540 (540p) but is simply BOB deinterlaced to 1080p. It was this change that AUTOMATICALLY fixed the bug that screwed-up exporting 1080i to 720p.

I have the newest imovie as i got a macbook for christmas, i have made a video and want to upload it to youtube and it is a quicktime file, but yet it is still taking ages to upload and youtube says if i change the format it will take less time,help?

I need help for how to upload a video on youtube when it is a quicktime file but how i change it to a streamable format in order for it to not take as long to upload, how do i do this?

I have the same issue. If you are exporting from iMovie version 10.0.1, I run into the same issues if I export directly to YouTube or if I export to file then upload to YouTube.
Google's help file doesn't properly address this problem and thier help is also out of date. In talking to a support rep at Apple, they said the export to YouTube should just work or the exporting to a file then uploading otherwise it's an issue for Google support.
If someone can post a solution that works (is a streamable format - which is different than the format that YouTube accepts as it will accept many formats but take a long time to process them), I'd be interested to hear also.

HELP TO EXPORT ANIMATED GIF AS QUICKTIME FILE

I have keynote 6.2 and have imported an animated gif file within my page presentation which also has a movie file and sound. When I export the file as a quicktime file, the final file does not show the animation at all, it is static?
I have tried different options when exporting as a mov and 4p4 file, neither makes any difference, can someone help please.
I am using the file to import into Imovie, where I am piecing everything together into a movie11.

Thanks for your prompt reply Gary, but the problem is how can I resolve this? Do I import another file type? Can I export to another format other than Quicktime. Someone mentioned changing the frame rate of the animation to either 25 or 30 frames a second, or does this not make a difference?

I'm delivering a project where the first step is to generate an HD Cam SR master, which I will be doing at a post-production lab. They will then do a QC check for me. To generate this HD Cam SR master, they need to me to bring in my 98-minute long movie on a firewire hard drive, in five equal parts -- QuickTime files. From these five QT files, the lab will then be creating an HD Cam SR master that will have...

a) I don't see any way to separate these audio tracks accordingly in the FCP menu for QuickTime export. Does anyone have any experience doing this?
b) And does anyone know the most efficient way to combine timeline audio tracks for this purpose? I have my dialogue sitting on the first FOUR audio tracks, actually. To deliver this film, I'll need to crush these four audio tracks to two, as listed above. I could generate an AIFF file, I suppose, import it back onto the timeline, sync it up, and then re-export along with the visuals to make the final QT file, but this seems like a generation loss.

PS the movie is made up of footage from a Sony PMW EX1. I used the codec "XDCAM 1080 24p 35mbs VBR" for editing in FCP. I'll either export to QT using this same codec or switch to "Apple ProRes" if my machine can somehow maintain the sync.

The following will answer both your questions a) and b).
Click on your master timeline and press cmd+0 (zero) to bring up Sequence Settings, then click on the Audio Outputs tab on the right. Click on the Outputs option and change it to 6. You can leave them as Stereo pairs.
Now, back on your timeline, you need to make sure all your audio is organised so each track. A1, A2, A3, A4 etc has all the relevant media on it.
Then, on the left of the timeline you see the Destination toggle buttons, then you see the Padlocks to lock tracks, then you have the Toggle Auto Select squares. If you right-click on the Toggle Auto Select squares you bring up a little sub-menu, at the top of this list you'll see Audio Outputs, which will show the stereo channels for that particular track. As you've changed the number of Audio Outputs in the Sequence Settings, the list will show: 1&2, 3&4, 5&6. You just tick whichever channels you want.
In your case, you have dialogue on the first 4 tracks, no problem, just go down through tracks 1,2,3 and 4 as described above and assign these to Audio Outputs 1&2.
Then just go down through your music and effects audio tracks and assign them accordingly.
Now, when you export your timeline as a self-contained media file, it will have different audio channels.
I hope that makes sense. When you change the number of audio outputs as described in the first step, I believe the rest of it is fairly self explanatory, once you know where the settings are.

How do I get an embedded quicktime file to appear "activated" w/playback & volume upon opening PDF?

I am new to adobe acrobat, and I'm using version 8. I am trying to insert quicktime videos in a PDF File. I have figured out how to insert the video files and embed them in the PDF.
However, when I save the PDF, close it, and then re-open the it, the quicktime file does not appear. If I don't use a poster image, then it is just blank where the file is, but the file is there, and when I click on the empty space where I know that it has been embedded a dialog box opens about playing it just this once, or making it a trusted file, etc. Then it plays, and the volume and playblack controls, along with the background, are visible. (it is actually just an audio track in a quicktime file, so nothing is playing but the audio, and the background is solid black. I have set it up so that it stays there once activated.
What I want is for the volume and playblack controls and the black background to appear as soon as you open the PDF file, without having to click in the blank area where the file has been inserted. This is going to be part of a portfolio that I am submitting for a school program, so I need the person that is opening it to be able to clearly see where the file is, and see the playblack and volume controls so that he can playback the file.
So how do i get the embedded quicktime file to automatically show up in "activated" mode, with the playback and volume controls visible and ready to be used?

If the video is only linked it would reduce the file size of the pdf and it would make it accessible for people opening on a device (like iPad) which does not allow flash which must be installed with Acrobat to view embedded media.
But I would recommend to send the people only a link to the PDF. I hate it, when my iPhone filled with useless stuff, if I would like to see it I could donwload, but as attachment make my space overfilled.

Export QuickTime file with new audio and maintain the file size and quality as the original.

I shot some footage for a client yesterday and ran into an issue. To make a long story short I have QuickTime mov files shot with my Panasonic GH4 that have a buzzing sound in the audio track. I have clean audio from a recorder that can be sync'd. Is there a way for me to do this for the client and deliver them as the same QuickTime file but with the clean audio and keep the file size close to the original and not have quality loss in the image?
If so I will probably put all of the spanned clips together from each interview and sync the audio before delivery. I am just not sure which codec will give the client the same quality footage compared to the originals and not have a massive difference in the overall file size. They did request that they be Quicktime MOV files though so that is a must.
I don't see this as an option in the codecs in the export settings in PP, but is there a way to export as ProRes or another MAC native codec that will save them from having to convert it on their end? I am on a PC with Adobe CS5.5 so I am not too familiar with MACs, but from what I understand they would need to convert the files if I sent them straight out of the camera.
I found some related search results for this but they pertained to "Best quality" for export. I am not sure how the varying options work but I don't want to create files that are considerably larger, just not less quality.
If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the workflow: I imported the video footage into iMovie '08 and did my edits. Then I exported it (share) to my desktop with compression set @ 740 X 480. Then I used QuickTime Pro to fix the audio track. The file plays perfectly with both audio tracks working. It's a QuickTime file (.mov).
I hope this jars any replies as to why the file when uploaded to my iWeb gallery drops the second audio track.

Can a Quicktime file download from clickable link?

Quicktime file download to desktop from clickable link?
I have large movies that I want to make available for direct download to the desktop so people will click download and do something else.
It is my understanding that you can't provide a quicktime file for download to a desktop because there are PC/MAC and browser issues across platform. But maybe I'm wrong.
Is it possible to make a web page that allows users to download higher file size videos from a clickable link? The quicktimes are h.264 in SD + HD around 50-100 megs. The files will be so large people won't want to wait so I want it to go directly to the desktop.
So far I can only find a few similar options
1) Embed the file in a web page. Provide a download link after the movie loads.
(This option requires you to load the file into the page. Users may not wait and close it)
2) Provide a zip file. This allows you to create a clickable link to the zip which begins downloading upon clicking. You then unzip the file. (Some less computer savvy people may get confused by the zip)
3) Put a raw file on server. This will play the movie in a blank window but can also be right clicked for direct download.

I've seen a few sites that have a link to the video with instructions to "Right-click to download". Essentially, it's option three with instructions. It seems to be a fairly common way of handling it. (Even for non-QuickTime movies)

Why does Adobe Media Encoder fail to export Quicktime Files?

I'm using Adobe Media Encoder CC 2014 on a Windows 7 Pro 64 bit PC.
While exporting the Quicktime variant of H.264 for ATSC television broadcast files, Adobe Media Encoder fails. Non-Quicktime H.264's render correctly, but some television stations require quicktime.
Troubleshooting reveals the problem only occurs when attempting to make a 1920x1080 H.264 QuickTime file.
Using the same original file (1920x1080), Adobe Media Encoder WILL export a 720x480/486 H.264 MOV file.
More interesting still, it will ALSO export at 1280x720.
Testing this information to it's limits, I found that the cutoff for a successful render is between a frame size of 1610x906 and 1609x905.
Useless, random sizes, I know... but that's the breaking point for Adobe Media Encoder CS6 (6.0.3.1 to be precise) and H.264 Quicktime files.

I'm trying to make a file with the extension ".MOV" using AME's "HD 1080i 29.97, H.264, AAC 48kHz" preset. AME fails every time with the following message:
"Encoding Failed
Export Error
Error compiling movie.
Unknown error."
Any other file extension (MP4, M4V, etc.) renders fine. The issue seems only to happen when attempting to make an MOV file. It doesn't seem to matter whether I use AME's built-in preset, or customize my own render settings--the problem always happens with any MOV larger than the size I mentioned above.
All of this used to work just fine on the same machine 2 years back with Adobe CS5, previous version of windows and QuicTime. I've been all through the Adobe and Windows possibilities, so I'm grabbing at straws here with QuickTime maybe having something to do with it.

Would you happen to know if Adobe has made any changes to its manner of muxing long-address MPEG-4 AVC data to the MOV file container? Since the MP4 and M4V files encode properly, have you tried opening these files in a media player and simply using the "Save As..." option to move the date to an MOV file container without transcoding audio or video data? I.e., is there any obvious relationship between the size of the MOV file encode (less than/greater than 4 GB) as a function of the resolution "break point" previously discovered?

After Effects CC stopped working with QuickTime files

I can not reliably use QuickTime (Animation or ProRes codec) in my timeline. I also can't export to QuickTime. I believe accepting the latest update to CC or my system software initiated this problem. I did not have this problem last week. I have converted all of my source QTs to .PNG sequences and .AIFs as a work-around.
System Details:

My team and I have been following this thread - we've been having very similar issues. Namely the 86::2 error and "MooV file is damaged or unsupported."
We had these issues on two machines from the first time we ran Ae CC and Pr CC early last week and were on OS 10.7.5. So we did a clean install and upgraged to Mountain Lion.
System Info: CS 6 | FCP 7 | 2x2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon | 64 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC | NVIDIA Quadro 4000 2048 MB | OS X 10.8.4 | Latest CUDA drivers | AJA KonaLHi drivers 10.4.4 (we have moved back from 10.4.5 upon reccomendation from AJA tech support.)
The second machine is the same as above, but with 20 GB of ram.
(Red Giant plugins were installed after the crashes on the clean install)
We are networked with an XSAN.
On my machine, the first listed above, I seem to have stemmed the issue in Ae by uninstalling Premiere. Without Premiere none of the problems in AE occur.
On my clean install the timeline of app installation went: first FCP, then Ae, then Pr. When I installed Premiere the problems arose again, 86::2 error and MooV error and the issue still arrises on the 20 GB machine when switching between Ae and Pr.
I hope that makes sense.
We will troubleshoot the Quicktime files tomorrow. I hope this can be helpful!

PDF attachments in Mail play like QuickTime files

This is really off the wall and a problem for which I have searched, without success, for an answer.
Using SL and Apple Mail, when I receive an email from one other Apple user, with a .pdf file attached, the first page of the .pdf file opens in Mail and when you get to the bottom of the first page of that email, you are presented with a slider, as in the type on which you click to play a QuickTime file. Click on it and subsequent pages of the .pdf file flash by, one after the other, too quick to read.
To see what I mean, look at the screen shot I took of the bottom half of one of his incoming emails.

Thank you, Linc. I have followed your advise and downloaded Tinker Tool and changed the preferences as suggested. I haven't tested it yet, though. If it doesn't solve my problem, I'll so advise. If it does, I'll be hitting the "This solved my question" button.

Quicktime file to be rendered

Whenever i capture Dv footage and transfer it to the timeline it works fine. But every time i import a Quicktime file & transfer it to the timeline it needs to be rendered & every time i do anything to it, even just moving it along the timeline a little, it needs to be rendered again. This is very annoying and it wastes so much valuable time. Can anyone please tell me what im doing wrong? Is there a problem with my preferences or what? Thanks in advance.

Files downloaded turn into QuickTime files and not iTune Files!

Hi folks,
I am downloading some songs from mp3search.ru (very very cheap mp3 site) and they are downloaded as iTune files (which is what I require), however, when they download fully they become Quicktime files!
I now have to change them individually to be opened with iTunes but they remain QT files!!
How do I stop QuickTime from being the default and dictating itself as the main MP3 player?!

well, today I browsed iTunes, happened to find something I liked and thought I'd give it a go..
After checking this bit:

Final Cut Express HD won't recognize .mov / quicktime files.

I have a MacBook Pro 13-inch with FCE3 installed. I'm using OSX 10.6.6. My camera doesn't put video out through a firewire, only usb, meaning FCE can't recognize it (to the best of my knowledge). So, to get around that, I uploaded the video through iLife '11 and converted all my video into one long .mov/quicktime file. When I try to import the video, I get a "file error" message.
Any tips on how I can get the video form iMovie to FCE? If it means not using quicktime, I'm fine with that, too.

Well, to repsond to Ian, I don't have FCE4. I have FCE3. I'll upgrade eventually, though.
And I have a Cannon FS20. I did what you said in the quicktime player. Here's the format:
"H.264, 960 x 540, Millions Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 2 channels, 44100 Hz."
The video plays fine in iMovie '11. I even tried the "share with Final Cut" tab in iMovie, but the video still wouldn't work in FCE3.
But I might add that it's not just the video from my camera that doesn't work in FCE3. It's all quicktime video. Even video that worked in FCE3 on my old Powerbook G4 now don't work in the same in FCE3 for my MacBook Pro.
