16:9 Footage won't import

Hi guys,
I just tried to import some 16:9 footage in Encore 1.5 and it told me that it can't import it and something about the aspect ration should be standard pal dimensions.
The only option I see for adjusting the aspect ratio for a project is in edit preferences and there is a preview aspect ratio setting there which is already at 16:9.
I don't know what to do as I can't even begin my DVD unless it will let me import my 16:9 footage and I can't find any settings that will allow me to fix whatever this problem might be...
Any assistance greatly appreciated :)
thanks,
Grant

Thanks Neil, don't worry, we're not transcoding the Xvid and agree that would look horrible :) It's a tga sequence we're left with which I think makes for a cleaner and professional workflow (he's using Maya)
It's trying to get a workable render from that that has been our problem so far but we're playing with settings in Adobe Premiere/encoder which has come up with new problem:
We now have a good quality 16:9 file that imports as an asset into Encore. It plays back perfectly in Encore in a timeline but if I use the footage as a menu, which I intend to do with one clip then it puts letter boxes either side of the footage. I check 16:9 in the properties but I don't understand why encore will play the widescreen footage and display it properly in a timeline but not in the menu...
any thoughts would be great,
Grant :)

  • 8mm footage won't import!

Seems like my entire computer AND external harddrives are avoiding recognition of my SONY DCR-TRV120 CAMERA! iMovie won't open, external harddrives won't open, applications won't open..then I TURN OFF the camera (through firewire) then everything continues with no problems. What's going on?

    Hi Israel,
I just came across the same problem as you and was wondering how you resolved the problem?
Basically I think the problem stems from the iMovie upgrade to 3.0... I have not tried importing from a Digital 8/Hi-8 camera for over a year, at least... and importing from regular DV cameras has not been a problem. So it seems to me that there's a compatibility problem, however when I checked the list of compatible cameras the TRV-120 is listed as being compatible.
I have not found anything else on the web about this problem... hopefully you've solved it and can let me know.
    Thanks

  • 59.94 DVCPRO HD footage won't import in correct framerate

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get the Log and Transfer to import DVCPRO HD 720P 59.94 media in proper framerate. The resulting imported file keeps coming in at 29.97. Have tried various easy setups. Currently:
    -HD
    -DVCPRO HD 720p60
    -59.94
    Just tried:
    -Panasonic DVCPRO HD
    -DVCPRO HD 720p60
    -59.94
Same result. The only way I can view the footage properly is if I import the MXF files into bin then lay them into the timeline. Timeline gets setup like this (per FCP's "suggestion")
    Frame -960x720
    Aspect -HD (960x720) (16:9)
    Pixel -HD (960x720)
    Editing Timebase - 59.94
    Compressor - DVCPRO HD 720p60
I also have to manually import the MXF audio files and just line them up with the video on the timeline. Have not thoroughly tested but it appears that I can directly edit MXF files in my timeline. I thought this wasn't possible without something like Raylight...??
    Please, any suggestions. Thanks

As I said, sometimes it takes someone who doesn't know the rules to break them.
What advantage does this have over Raylight though? Or disadvantage?
    Advantage: Free.
Disadvantage: You have to manually match up audio and video. That can be VERY time consuming and result in more clips (as you'll have to use the MERGE CLIP option) than you intend. Time is money, so Raylight is a better option. But I still prefer Log and Import...I can name my clips this way.
Now, how about mixing this footage with the other footage(s) from the other cameras? I gotta check my other thread because I think someone already gave workflow advice. But what would be the best way to make this footage "work" with others?
With the Multiformat timeline, they work fine. Just choose a main codec and the others will conform to that. Or choose RENDER AS PRO RES in your User Prefs>Render Control and everything will render out to ProRes.
And multiclip...oh Jesus, can of worms here, eh?
YES. If you shot multiple cameras and you want to use the multicam feature, all the footage MUST be the same codec and frame rate. So this means plan this BEFORE you shoot. If this already happened, use Compressor to convert the other footage to match the codec and frame rate of choice. Mixing formats in this manner is never wise...for many reasons. Color matching is also a big issue.
    Good catch...I'm still marvelling.

  • Imported 16:9 DV footage won't automatically Letterbox

    Hi All,
Hope someone might be able to assist regarding my little dilemma in iMovie 6.0.2 please.
I'm using an iMac (Intel) with 2Gb RAM - 250Gb HDD, with 125Gb free space.
    - I have recorded footage in 16:9 format on my miniDV camera
    - The new project in iMovie was selected as "DV Widescreen"
    - Connection being used to import is Firewire.
    - Footage has been imported ok, size is 17.9Gb
    - However iMovie just doesn't want to automatically letterbox the clips that it I have imported.
The footage was imported in one effort (basically just let the camera play)
I have never been able to get iMovie to automatically letterbox any of the footage that I have as described above bar my first attempt at using iMovie (trial and error)
I have several other tapes of footage all in 16:9 that have been letterboxed and I want to keep it the same. I will be joining different clips of each project to make my movie.
The dilemma is I know of a way that will automatically letterbox the footage that I have imported, but that will mean that I need to be in front of the computer. I will have to stop the import somewhere midway, iMovie will then automatically letterbox and then I will have to repeat for the remainder of the footage on the tape.
The above takes far too long. I have many tapes to go through and want to be able to have everything imported so that I can pick and choose clips, edit and then convert to DVD. The plan was to import during the evening and wake up with the footage imported and letterboxed.
Can someone tell me if there is an option with iMovie that will allow me to letterbox the footage after it has been imported?
    Cheers

The viewfinder on the camera is 4x3, hence the black
    bars.
It seems that iMovie is not reading the flag from the
camera that should tell it the material is 16x9. It
thinks it is 4x3- that is why it is adding the
pillarboxing (to make it "fit" in 16x9).
I don't know your camera- but I've never had any
problems with our 2 Sony's in 16x9 mode. Do you have
the "Automatic Dv Pillarboxing and Letterboxing"
checked in prefrences? Maybe you could try a test
import with the "opposite" setting and see if that
makes any difference. You might also try setting up
a 4x3 project to see if the material imports into
that with proper letterboxing. Are you using the
same camera you shot with to load the material? One
time, we loaded a friends tape, but through our
camera and iMovie did not pick up the flag
    correctly.

Automatic DV Pillarboxing and Letterboxing is checked in the preferences.
I am using the same video camera that I used to record to import the footage.
I have recorded something in 4:3 and 16:9 to test and everything is fine.
I just need to know if I am able to Letterbox the footage that I have imported in my first post manually as iMovie isn't doing it automatically.
Seems to me that there is a flaw within iMovie, where if the footage is too long and or the imported file is too large it won't Letterbox correctly.

  • Red files won't import into CS5

    Hi all,
I shot some footage yesterday on a Red Epic. The files are .rd3. Premiere Pro CS5 is suppossed to have native support for Red files, but they won't import - I get a "file import failure" message. The error says "unsupported format or damaged file"
    The files aren't damaged.
    Any suggestions? Thanks.

CS5 supports pre-Mysterium-X RED One media.  To import later builds and media from Epic/Scarlet, you need the RED Epic importer.
    http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/redepic_importer.html
The new CS6 will have support for this built-in.

  • After effects animation Codec won't import into FCP

    Hi
I have used After Effects to do a green screen key on some HD 1080i footage.
I then went to export - quicktime movie - animation
I understand that the animation codec is the only way to export with an alpha channel so that I can put other footage in after my nice green screen key.
I set quality to best and frame rate to 25, I also tried frame rate as current and it exports and plays back fine in quicktime movie player, but won't import into final Cut.
The error message is "wrong frame rate"
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am quite new to after effects and wonder if there is something wrong with the way it is seeing the footage as I shot in widescreen and the image is squeezed as for a 4:3 TV aspect ratio.
    Thanks.
    Ajay

    1. Check your AE composition settings (cmd-k) and be sure your frame rate is set to 25... AE uses the frane rate of your composition and not the settings in your export module...
    2. Do not use the "export" command in AE... that is used only for special purposes only (i.e. for using "quicktime exporto compnents" not available under the export queue)...
    3. use the "make movie" or "add to export queue" command instead
    4. You expot module should be set as:
    - best settings
    - animation + alpha
do not specify any frame rate in the export module!! AE automatically uses the frame rate in your composition settings!!
    5. Export and import into fcp...
I never had problems with AE animation+alpha and fcp 6.0.1

  • File won't import due to 'Too many audio channels'

I've managered to import one 30 minute video recorded off a screen recording program off the AppStore called ScreenRecordStd. This software has an 'include computer audio' button which I activated after the first 30 minute video.
Once trying to import any videos with this selection activated they won't import, telling me there are too many audio channels.. so I know it is due to this selection. The file information tells me I have two AAC 44100 Hz Stereo files as part of the video, when I change it to mp4 or h264 file formats it does import but the video/audio are not in sync when played through on Premiere Pro but are totally fine in QuickTime player.. also the second audio channel is a lot quieter when being played through on Premiere Pro than in QuickTime.
So, I hoping someone has came across this software or this problem and can help me. So I have two 44100 Hz stereo files within the video and the selection I am using says it can take up to three stereo files, so why is it telling me it can't import because there's too many audio channels??? I've tried changing the video to h.264, mp4 and they just struggle with the video being too slow and avi. just has the same issues as .mov.
    Can anyone help?
    Thank you.

Why do you convert the media to start with? Are you aware of that you are converting the camera's MPEG2 to the MPEG2 you get when creating the new MXF file? (XDCAM HD = MPEG2)
I would never ever re-compress/convert the already-in-camera-compressed MPEG2 to compressed MPEG2 for editing and then having it to end up in let's say either MPEG2-DVD or H.264. You loose one generation and i would not want to lose it by re-encoding to MPEG2 since, imo, re-encodong MPEG2 to MPEG2 should be avoided. (MPEG2 to MPEG2 = The quality is degraded too much) If you still want to re-encode the footage i would use another codec, DNxHD/CineForm/Lagarith. (Pick your favorite)
You can use the MXF files from Canon XF Utility in CS6. (The files MXF are just copied from the original folder structure, so no re-encoding is done.)
AFAIK, the problems with tearing video go away by using the MXF files you get from XF Utility. If the tearing is still present, close Pr and delete all Cache files. Open Pr and let the Generating Peak file finish.
AFAIK 8 audio channels are standard in MXF OP1a according to SMPTE D10.

I have an iMac 27" and am trying to import some videos of a friends wedding into iMovie however one of the movies won't import. It doesn't say why or give any error message or codes.
All of the other movies on the card download with out a problem. The movie in question is not 'corrupt' as you can watch it in iMovie direct from the SD card but as soon as you try to import it, it  just says 'error'. iIve tried moving the file to an external drive ( and other variations on this theme) then importing but have had no luck.
    Can anyone please help me.

    The mystery remains....
Thanks for the pointers. The file type is .mts (a proprietry sony one).
I have now found some video converter software (Wondershare and iSkysoft) at a cost. Either will convert this file for me into .mp4. This I can then import into iMovie without any problems. I've checked this on the trial versions and it worked well but without paying am left with a giant watermark in the video
The mystery (which I still havent solved) is why did 20 other .mts files import fine and then this one not?
If you could point me in the direction of some free .mts converter software that would be the cherry on the cake.
    Thanks

  • IMovie HD won't import from Sony HDR-HC1

iMovie HD 5.0.2 (111) on my G5 desktop controls, but won't import from, my new little Sony HDR-HC1 1080i DV camcorder. Same was the case with my 12" 1 GHz PowerBook until, at the advice of a Manhattan Beach Genius Bar tech, I did an archive reinstall of 10.4 and a reinstall of iMovie HD on both my G5 PowerMac and G4 PowerBook and then downloaded all the updates. Now my PowerBook works, but my PowerMac still won't import. On an empty second HD in my PowerMac I installed OS 10.4 and iMovie HD ONLY (to create as sterile as possible of an environment), made the 2nd HD my startup drive, and still iMovie HD on my PowerMac will not import from this camera (although it will from an older Sony VX-1000 regular def camcorder).
Does anybody have any solutions, or any idea why iMovie HD now imports on my PowerBook but after the same makeover still won't on my PowerMac?
Per earlier posts, I tried playing some piano notes in Garage Band, trashing the iMovie preference files, and reinstalling QuickTime (the tech had heard QT 7.0.3 could be at fault from becoming corrupted in certain updating combinations), all to no avail.

  • My iPod won't import all the songs on iTunes

My iPod Classic won't import all the songs in iTunes. Any ideas?

    Hello Tony,
It sounds like you are trying to transfer music from your iPod to your computer.
Are the songs that are transferring over iTunes purchases?  Music imported from a CD or other source that is on your iPod cannot be transferred to a computer from your iPod, but music purchased from the iTunes Store can.  You can find more information at the following link:

Hello and welcome to the support community
As you know, your iPhone 5 is not compatible with our iBook G4. To get your music in iTunes from your iBook to your iPhone you would need to migrate the music files to a newer intel based Mac. A Mac which has Mac OS X 10.6 or higher installed. Then sync your iPhone 5.

  • Media Encoder won't import MXF files from Canon XF100

I'm running Media Encoder CC on two laptops: a macbook pro and a macbook air. Both systems are running the most recent version of Media Encoder CC (including updates) but only one will import MXF files from a Canon XF100? The macbook air imports and encodes the files without issue, however the macbook pro won't import the same MXF files and kicks the following error:
The file /Users/.../.../.../AA0106.MXF could not be imported. Could not read from source. Please check the settings and try again.
I could understand if both computers errored but using the same file, one will import and the other will not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just try this and see if it will work for you.
Open iPhoto > Preferences > General and deselect 'Connecting camera opens: iPhoto'.
Change it to 'No Application' and close iPhoto.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn it on or better still use a card reader.
If iMovie tries to open, close it.
Your camera/card should now appear as an external drive.
Copy/paste your video files into a new folder on your desktop.
    Eject and disconnect your camera/card.
Now open iMovie and go File > Import > Movies... and navigate to that folder.

  • Premiere CC won't import AAC audio

I'm trying to loop two videos together in Premiere Pro CC 2014.1. One of the videos won't import the audio, just the video track. The audio is in AAC format, the video is a MPEG-4 movie with H.264 format. Every other video I've tried imports as usual, but for some reason the audio drops off on this one. The video plays just fine in Quicktime with the audio track. When I import it, the audio track drops off and only the video track shows up.
I didn't create the video, so I don't have access to the original working files. Anyone know any workarounds or fixes for this?
    Thanks!

Thanks for responding, but I work for a very small company and since I'm the only one who needs CC, I have the personal version installed.
Also this appears to be a blanket issue with all audio and video file formats, thus not likely a codec issue since the files I've tried so far should be covered by premiere's compatibility, the even play in windows media player with no issue.
Video itself plays fine, but any audio attached to a video, or just plain audio files will not import no matter what I try.
    Sorry my info didn't help.
    Two things to try.
Create a brand new project and test if you can import the problematic files.
If that does not work, change the name of the folder that contains your media files. Then try to import.
    Let us know what happens.

  • Can't import photos into iPhoto-- it sees them but won't import

I've been using iPhoto with my Mac Mini for almost a year now without a single issue (that's the main reason I bought a mac). I believe I have iPhoto 08 (I bought the computer 1 year ago). I have a newer Canon point-and-shoot that I've been using. About 1 month ago I did a software update to iPhoto, so it's pretty much up to date.
Everything has been fine for almost a year, then all the sudden, iPhoto hangs when I try to import my latest batch of photos. It will pull them into the import preview window (I can see all of them), but when I try to "Import All" it just hangs. I have to turn off the camera just to get the program to unfreeze (after patiently waiting a few minutes). For some odd reason, just 1 of the 70 photos makes it in (there are a few videos, but they won't import either).
    Here's the error message:

It’s part of the basic install of OS X. So unless you deleted it then it’s there in your apps folder. If you have deleted it, it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. You will be able to extract the installation package using Pacifist.
Alternatively, if you’re using almost any camera +apart from a Canon+ then the camera card is visible on the desktop and you can drag the movie to the desktop using the Finder and import from there.
No matter what camera you use, if you pop the card from it into a USB Card Reader then it will be accessible via the Finder. Card Readers are inexpensive and all round a better idea.
    Why use a Card Reader?
Because it’s safer: Less risk of your images being lost if your camera shuts down during transfer.
Because it saves the battery on your camera
Because it saves wear and tear on your camera ports
    Because it’s almost always faster.
