16:9 for XDCAM MXF files

I am trying to import XDCAM files via XDCAM Transfer to FCP. FCP does not recognize the files in 16:9 which is the format they have. Does anyone know a solution for this problem?

Hello,
I'll be a little more concrete, hoping that someone has an answer: I received a disc with movie files in .mxf format. Since FCP doesn't natively recognize them, I am trying to import them through XDCAM Transfer.
Here is what information XDCAM Transfer gives about the clips:
Video Format: IMX 50
Bit Rate: 50 Mbps (CBR)
Frame Rate: 50i
Aspect Ratio: 16:9
Frame Size: 720 x 576
Codec Apple MPEG IMX 625/50 (50 Mb/s)
When I view the clips in XDCAM Transfer, they are 16:9 and look right, but after importing, FCP shows them with aspect ratio 4:3. I have tried all kinds of sequence settings to correct this, but they don't really work. When I drop a clip onto the timeline, for example, FCP tells me the clips settings aren't the same as the sequence's and whether I would like to correct this for better results. Clicking yes, it all goes back to 4:3. Clicking no, I can use a strange sort of 16:9 (a part on the top and bottom of the picture is grey-coloured and seems to be shut off), but exporting the sequences as Quicktime movies in the end, these are again 4:3.
Does anybody know what's going on here and why I can't seem to use these MXF/IMX files with their original 16:9 aspect ratio in FCP? Am I doing something wrong or is this a well-known problem (and maybe there is a good workaround)?
One thing that throws me off is that in an official FCP brochure talking about different input formats, Apple states that both NTSC and PAL IMX have 4:3 aspect ratio. How can this be true if the files I am trying to work in are 16:9? I am kind of desperate because under time pressure, so all help is much appreciated.
Best,
Jenny

  • Zero timecode start for XDCAM EX files

After importing 1280x720 24p Sony XDCAM EX files, Project window displays zero starting timecode. I'm using the CS3 Education version, but it's the up-to-date 3.2.0. I have read that others have experienced this while others have not. No matter how I start the project, i.e. using PPro XDCAM EX preset, I get this problem. Anyone know the cause? Running HP xw8400, Windows XP Pro 2002, Blackmagic HD EXtreme I/O, Nvidia 1500FX.

Not near my NLE at the moment but I do know that in CS4 there is a Preference setting for this:
Use media T/C or Zero Timeline.
I can not recall if same option is in CS3

  • Need a procedure for bringing MXF files into Premiere Pro from a Focus Enhancements FS-5

    That's it.
I can drag and drop the files into the resources pane, but when I drag them onto the timeline the "distribute" themselves - the video file goes on the video track, then the left side audio file appears on the first mono audio track 1 with its start point aligned with the outpoint of the video, and the right audio channel appears on the second mono audio channel with ITS start point aligned with the outpoint of the audio channel on a-track 1.
All of this is can be fixed. I can align the tracks and link them and then they are fine, but it seems to me that there must be a less cumbersome and risky procedure.
When we import from the FS-5 into our Avid system, it creates a single "pilot" file name with all the video, lft, and rht files "attached" to it. You click on it and the whole file set does what you tell it to do.
I've asked Focus Enhancements Support for help, but yet again they cannot be bothered to answer. FE makes good products, but their support is well... manure.
    Thanks, JP

    Wil -
I suspect this discussion is ended, BUT I thought you might want to know what I've discovered in case this question comes up again.
You were correct that the MXF file sets have to be imported as individual channels... sort of, I'll explain below.
There is no way to set the FS-5 to OP1A
    Explanation:
I found that I could import a file set (left audio, video, right audio) at the same time.
Then right click and MERGE those files into one file and toss the originals.
I attempted to import all the MXF files at the same time and I could. Unfortunately when I did the names of all the audio files were change to unique, but, as far as I could tell, random numbers and letters, so I couldn't figure out which audio files went with which video file. That meant I had to import and merge each set of three files individually. Given that MXF breaks long shoots into a series of files sets each about 8 minutes long, one ends up with a LOT of files to wrangle.
All and all, this process is not very efficient. Given all the eye-strain required to find each file set (the do not sort together) and the hand-work required to import and merge each 8 minute section, doing anything long would be quite a pain. For us loading video tape is faster and easier.
Thanks for your insight. I appreciate the effort. You can mark this question "answered."

  • Software for converting mxf files

It's taking hours to import mxf files in PP CS5.  Is there any software that will quickly process them so that it would be quicker to import them such as XDCAM?

  • Support for DNxHD MXF files

    Hi,
I recently tried to import a DNxHD MXF (220). PPro CS5.5.2 wasn't able to import this MXF. Is there any way to import this MXF file or to update PPro?
    Thanks

Yes. I can easily import any Quicktime based DNxHD file. But not MXF based files. The new Blackmagic Hyperdeck Studio is able to record them. You get 1 video mxf and 2 audio mxf files. PPro currently isn't able to open them. It would be great if this is supported in the near future. If anyone from Adobe wants to have some of these mxf files, please let me know. I will provide some files.

  • Is Premiere Pro CS6 suitable for converting .mxf files from PAL to NTSC?

    Hi
I have a lot of footage that was shot on a Canon XF305 in full res PAL.  I need to convert this to NTSC.  Will Premiere do the job well?  What settings should I use?  I'm using Mac OS X v10.6.8 on a Mac book Pro.
    Best regards,
    KF

Many thanks for your reply Harm.
Would you have any ideas for what preset settings I would export with?  And which codec?  There is an HD preset which compresses it with H.264.  I'm trying to get the highest quality possible and h.264 compresses it.

  • How do you transfer MXF files to Prores for FCP - a full CF card at a time?

A full 64Gb card at a time, rather than 100+ clips individually...
Step-by-step would be good as I've not dome it before...
    Thanks!

Panasonic mxf cam saved mxf videos on P2 card. While Canon mxf cam saved MXF files on CF card.
And as .mxf file format is not fully supported by Mac non-linear editing software like FCP.
For P2 cards, you can use the Import From Camera, then click "Open Camera Archive". And then transfer your P2 MXF to FCP referring to a Panasonic Column.
For Canon MXF files, to make it easier for editing Canon MXF videos on FCP 6/7/X, here you can find an easy way to get MXF smoothly editing in FCP.
Compatible OS: Mac OS X like Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion.

  • Good converter for MXF files?

Could I please get some recommendations on easy to use converters for the MXF files that the Canon XF300 makes.  Some members of our production team are using Premiere Elements and they won't go into that software.  I'd like something that can batch convert if possible.  When I google search I get plenty of options, but I'd prefer some actual recomendations on what you guys use.  This will be for non-advanced users, so "easy to use" is key here.

Canon adopts MPEG-2 for the XF series Professional Camcorder as the Canon XF Codec to ensure their videos have the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. And with the MXF file wrapper, video and audio can be wrapped in a single file along with important metadata.
But if you are the user of Canon XF series( Canon XF100/XF105/XF300/XF305 or Canon C300) or Panasonic P2 series, you will encounter the problem while importing the MXF files to Adobe Premiere Pro 6.0 or its earlier versions of CS4, CS5, CS5.5, or even Premiere Elements, you may see the error "ERROR COMPILING MOVIE: UNKNOWN"coming up when exporting a movie composed of MXF clips, whether it's to AVI, H.264, etc., this error comes up, in particular when the movie is "long", i.e. a half minute to a minute. Otherwise, with short clips there is no problem.
It's enough to make you want to pull your hair out. The Internet is full of discussions on this issue, but we don't know why Adobe can't fix it? The bottom line, however, is that once you convert your MXF files to H.264 MOV using Brorsoft MXF Converter, there are absolutely no problems regardless of file lengt...which in our case is perhaps a four minute movie.

  • Why do mxf files crash Adobe Premiere Pro CS5

I can import Sony HD XDCam .mxf files and I can play them and I can edit with them.
But SOME of these files, not all, when played back -  get to the very end of the video file - there will be a slight stutter (in the last second or two of the clip playback)  - then clip ends - then Adobe has a short freeze up (5 seconds) - then a pop up saying Adobe has encountered a problem and must SHUT DOWN. And then it shuts down.
I am importing HD XDCam .mxf files from Sony PDW F350 camera - optical disc.  Audio on four channels mono.  High def files. I can set inputs and outputs before the end of the clips and they do export. But playing back - I get the freeze and the SHUT DOWN... only on certain files. What's up?
Cannot work this way. Thanks for any help.

    Greetings.
    I have Adobe PPro 5.0.3
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Only certain Sony mxf files will do this: At the end of the video clip - either in source window or from timeline - and I tried it only with video track on time line - at the END of the clip about 1 second from end, there is a stutter stop - then freeze for a few seconds - then a pop up from WINDOWS saying
    Windows is collecting information....
    ADOBE HAS STOPPED WORKING
    Then shut down.
I tried un connecting from the internet, but it still has this problem.
I have Matrox Mini ox2 with Max. Mercury excelleration is on.
Everything seems to be working fine with other clips in the bin and in other projects.
These Sony HD XDCam clips came not from a camera recording - rather from a export file to disc -  at a TV station using AVID Newscutter - and a U1 deck (I believe.)  These mxf files were in AVID - then I exported the files to a HD XDCam Disc - then imported them into my computer into ADOBE.
Perhaps there is a problem with the AVID copy? Or settings?
    Thanks for any help.

  • After Effects CS6 and mxf files

Was playing around with the Demo for CS6 and discovered to my dismay that I can't import xdcam .mxf files that I am able to import with CS5.5.  What is up with that?

    CaliPVP and others:
I'm having the same problem, running AE CS6 on Windows 7 Professional.  When trying to import .MXF footage from my Raid 0 Array (footage that previously worked perfectly in AE CS5.5), AE will crash unexpectedly.  Coping that same footage over the My Documents directory on the C: drive - footage imports just fine, AE works as expected.  I did open a case within Adobe Support, but they haven't been able to track down a cause - or a solution.
I have recently upgraded to a new editing computer, so getting AE 6 to natively import .MXF is now a priority for me.  When I research the issue, the directory structure on the Raid Array shows a Attribute of Read-Only on my ingest directory.  I just found this link from the Microsoft Support site
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326549
that discusses how to change the attributes of a Folder / SubFolder.  Fair warning - I haven't yet tried this today, but will try it later on and report my results.

  • How to encode 4 channel mxf file to 4 channel mov file

I want to encode a 4-channel IMX 50 mxf file to an 4 channel imx50 mov file. We use the mxf import plugin for reading mxf files. Which audiosettings do I need to use to create a 4-channel mov file. Everything I do results in a 2 channel file.

Thank you all so much for your speedy responses. My workflow is to include web-ready movie files to both PC and Mac users. I won't know in advance which they use. The AIC file was a one-off circumstance.
The files will be generally be h264 to be uploaded to youtube, vimeo, FB, wherever. I know that those files will open on QT for Windows (when it's properly installed) and will upload to those sites just fine. I don't want to alienate Mac users (or add another step to my workflow) by using .wmv when these files are intended for the user to upload rather than view on their computer anyway.
I think it was the AIC thing that was killing me. Especially since her computer did not give any sort of error message. I know a lot of Windows users have that "sound but no video" issue, so I assumed QT was installed wrong. I'm hoping if everything is encoded h264, and I give explicit instructions for downloading (and installing) QT, that it should all be good. I know that's probably naive given how wildly different, annoying, and un-user friendly PC's are, but that's probably what I'm going to go with.
In the past, I've found many people responding that they could hear but not see the video and they would swear they had the latest version of QT. They did. The .exe file was sitting uninstalled on their desktop.

  • XDCAM .mov Files on a PC in PrPro CC

Anybody know if there will be any support for XDCAM .mov files in Premiere Pro CC? I have a feeling that this is a limitation of Windows rather than Pr as it works fine on a Mac.
Is the Calibrated software plugin the only workaround available or will CC help in any way?
    Thanks guys!

So? Works for me. I understand the frustration of the infrequent upgraders, but as a new user the cloud is a great option for us.
I don't lease a car, I buy a car. I don't lease a camera, I buy a camera. I don't lease a computer, I buy a computer. I don't rent a house, I buy a house, I don't want a mortgage on my house, I pay it up front. Same with Adobe software. I have no problem buying a CS suite and paying in one big lump. I do have a problem with renting and being completely dependent on the crazy pricing that Adobe applies to their products. If I rent, I take the huge risk of being screwed over by Adobe. If I can't buy a perpetual license of a CS suite, it is EOS.
I rather pay more for a perpetual license than the CC would cost, just to be sure Adobe does not screw me in the long run. And I'm not an infrequent upgrader. I have perpetual licenses on each and every version of Premiere since 6.01, before it became Premiere Pro and have Production Premium suite licenses since CS2 and Master Collection suites since CS4. That does not qualify as an infrequent upgrader, does it?

  • HT1338 FCP Studio convert MXF Files (Canon C300)

Anyone have a suggested method for converting MXF files shot with a Canon C300 for use with FCP Studio 7.
    Thanks!

You can convert the Canon C300 mxf footage to the other common format, like MOV, ProRes MOV as that format is easy to import and edit on Final Cut Pro 7. For convert the Canon C300 MXF to ProRes mov, have two software for your choice:
    1. Canon XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro : http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0040354.asp?model=
    2. A Converter : Google ....
But use Canon XF Plugin for Final Cut Pro seems that some frames were dropped when transcoded to ProRes 422. So the best way is convert Canon XF300 MXF to ProRes 422 MOV by a mxf converter. ( You can download try this : converter )

  • Media Encoder CS4 hangs when opening large XDCAM HD MXF files

I am having a problem with Media Encoder CS4 hanging consistently when importing large (18GB) XDCAM HD (25mbps, MPE-2 HD) MXF files.  Smaller files are not a problem.  This is on a soupped up system, HP XW8600 Workstation / Windows Vista Pro.  The same files work fine in After Effect CS4.
Any idea what could cause this?
    Thanks.

Yes, I did.  Thanks for the tip though.

  • XDCAM SD PDW530p MXF files unable to import into Premiere CS4

    Hey guys,
New to the XDCAM world...I'm trying to load in the mxf files using the import function but I get an error 'Codec missing or unavailable'. Can anyone shed some light on this? While i'm here the footage is shot in 720 x 576 @ 50MB...what project option should i select?
    Cheers.

I am indeed referring to our PDW530p camera which is a disc-based (PDF23a Sony, bluray-like, discs) camera that saves every shot in a MXF file, no matter what format is used. I probably made it more confusing then necessary. Basically you can shoot to DVCAM and that is a format Premiere can natively import. IMX50, which is XDCAM as far as I am told, can not be imported by premiere natively.
@colin: we tried this "trick" (I am now in doubt if we renamed to .avi or to .mpg, it was a while back) on a machine that has a RT.X2 which does not support IMX50 and we NEEDED to be able to either convert or edit the clips. We have two systems here, one with the Axio and one with the RT.X2 (I know, I know :( ). We eventually ended up going to the Axio system, imported the footage in CS3, converted it to something premiere natively does support, transported that over the network to the other machine and loaded it in.
But we WERE able to get the clips in premiere on the RT.X2 system by renaming the clips. We just did not trust it. Feel free to try it if you wish. :)
On the Axio machine you can indeed playback IMX50 recored clips/footage in any program thanks to the hardware, drivers and codecs (it is a joined accomplishment *cough*) Matrox provides for their boards.
