16:9 Letterbox dvd appearing stretched wide

I know this is a tough thing to pinpoint with different playback set-ups, but I wanted to see if there is anything I'm overlooking.
I have a dvd sp project, SD, set up in 16:9 letterbox format. All of the menus and tracks appear fine on: build disc on all macs, and a dvd player + flatscreen in one location. But on a new dvd player setup, it looks like it's getting double letterboxed...in other words the 16:9 menu and tracks are appearing stretched wide, and we get bars top and bottom. In this same setup, we play two other 16:9 dvds (not authored by me), and they appear correct, so it doesn't seem to be a global setting in the playback set-up.
Any ideas?
Thank you

Did you use Pan & Scan at all in the settings? It should just be Letterbox, not Pan & Scan/Letterbox or Pan & Scan. I would check that first, though I do not think it would cause what you are describing but those settings can cause strange results. (It sounds like you did not letterbox the movie in Final Cut, which is the right way to do it, but just checking.)
What you are describing does sound weird. Have you tried on any other players (sounds like you tested on two standalone players so far.) I would also double check the settings on the new set-up just in case and make sure that they are set for 16:9.

  • Libretto U100: photos are stretched wider than they should be

When viewing My Picture File all photos are stretched wider than they should be. I guess that is because the screen is a 'wide screen.'
Is there a way to view the photos in the normal width? Do I need to change any settings to do this?
    Thank you for your help.

Did you try to change the screen resolution?
Check if the photos will appear stretched using the screen resolution like 1024x768.

  • Input video appears stretched when imported to Premiere Pro CS6

I'm on a beginner level on Premiere Pro so please be gentle if this question is very basic. I'm trying to make a video that preserves the input video resolution exactly. My input video was an MP4 movie with resolution 1440 x 1080. It's an iPad screen recording using X-Mirage software. When I opened it normally in quicktime, it didn't seem stretched. However, when I imported the clip into Premiere, the clip appeared stretched. I checked the Properties of the clip and it turned out to have Pixel Aspect Ratio of 1.3333, which meant the pixels were stretched. My output sequence was also stretched out because of this, even though the output indicated that the resolution is the same: 1440 x 1080. I tried to comply with "Clip Mismatch Warning" and the result was still a stretched version. Please help!

    Hi,
In premiere pro, you will see sequence on the top. Click on sequence and from the drop down select sequence settings. Under sequence settings there would be a tab of pixel aspect ratio. Try and change it to d1/dv ntsc widescreen 16:9 or hd anamorphic.
Check if it makes any difference.
    Thank You

  • Jpegs appear stretched in Timeline

I'm bringing jpegs into FCP for a slideshow and they appear stretched out as though in HD. The sequence setting is set for 720 x 480. How would I make them appear as they normally should?
    Thanks.

    1440 x 1080
Did you use one of the Photoshop film and video presets and paste your photos into that? If so, those pixel dimensions would apply to an Anamorphic HD video setting such as that used for HDV.
In video, dpi doesn't mean a thing. Let's not get hung up on that.
What happens when you take one of the original jpegs and drop that into your Timeline?

    Hi
My showreel DVD appears zoomed on macbook pros + matchbooks when inserted but plays fine on imacs+DVD players
It's as if the bottom 2 inches don't fit on the screen - to resolve this i need to hit escape - which resizes to a small window and displays correctly - from here if I select full screen the DVD displays correctly.

Check the prefs in the DVD player. It's what controls how the image appears when launched.

  • My menu bar is appearing too wide.

My menu bar is appearing too wide, thus I can't see the menu bar and dock on the desk top at the same time.  To see all the menu bar I have to slide it left or tight, but can never see it all at once.  To see the dock I have to slide the curser up or down.  The whole desk top moves up and down to see the bottom or top of screen.  This old lady could use some assistance, please.

Check in System Preferences>Universal Access and see if Zoom is on. If you have toddlers or cats this can accidentally turned on by hitting a group of keys that include Option + Command + 8.
To prevent this being accidentally activated in the future go to System Preferences>Keyboard>Keyboard Shortcuts>Universal Access (Accessibility in 10.8) and uncheck all the boxes.

  • Colored letterboxes mysteriously appearing over menus on burned DVD.

    Hello all,
This will be my first post to any forum of any kind so I'm a little unfamiliar with the protocol. Here it goes.
I've done a few projects in Encore before so I'm a little familiar with it but the latest project I'm working on is giving me some trouble.
I'm working exclusively in widescreen and in the preview box, everything appears fine. However, when I burned my test disc, colored letterboxing appeared over my menus. I'm completely mystified as to where these came from. I created my menus in Photoshop in 720x480 NTSC Widescreen (1.2) format. When I imported these into Encore, no letterboxing appeared. The menus display fine. I've tested the DVD on a 4:3 TV and a 16:9 TV and for both, the letterboxes appear.
My widescreen TV has a zoom option that displays the menus as they appear in Encore but in 16:9 mode, I get the letterboxes.
The odd thing is (aside from the issue, of course) is that the color of the letterboxes matches the color scheme of the menu. The only setting I changed to match the color scheme is the menu color set for the buttons.
I'm working in Encore CS3 on a Mac with the project set in 16:9 aspect ratio.
Any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    M_Darby

It might also be of interest for the OP to list the exact make/model of both the set-top player and the TV. Each can influence the end-result, due to their settings and how they handle things. Could well be make/model specific, hence no one else seeing the exact same problem.
With all of my Projects, I've seen nothing like that, and test on a bunch of different pieces of equipment - though most of mine are 4:3 with 4:3 assets. Still, enough 16:9 and enough different gear, that I'd likely have seen somethig similar.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Control button for boolean constant appears stretched in labview application.

I placed a boolean constant on a block diagram.  Then I changed the shape of the corresponding button on the front panel to be square 15 x 15.  I placed the button over a portion of a graph legend.  I then created and .exe using application builder.
When the application is run on my computer the buttons retains the intended shape, that is square 15 x 15, and the intended position but when run on another users computer the button appears in a slightly different position relative to the graph legend and is stretched in shape to something more like 15 high by 50 wide.
I do not understand what is causing the behavior?  Is it possible that the user has the wrong RTE or is there some other explanation?
    Thanks,
    Bernie

Under VI properties, window size, none of the items are checked/selected.
I can not find a size to text property for the boolean but for what it is worth there is no text being displayed.
Problem may be related to display on notebook with a wide aspect ratio.
In the attached jpg you can see a pink boolean improperly stretched at the top of the screen and a black one near the middle.
    Any thoughts or further suggestions?

  • Video appears stretched outside of program and pixilated images

I am using Final Cut Express for the first time and am trying to make a slideshow. Everything displays nicely in the program, however when I export it to quicktime and play it on the computer in quicktime, everything is stretched including the generated text, still images, and the few video clips I used. When I burn it to a disk and play it on the tv, it is also stretched horizontly. I was able to solve this problem by opening up the exported version in iMovie, and saving it again and then burning it to DVD, but I know there must be some setting that I am missing in Final Cut. Please help.
Also, the pictures display quite pixilated on the tv screen. I am using full sized jpeg files. Any setting changes I need to make on those to make them more clear?
    Thank you.

What I am most concerned about is the still image quality. The still images are taken with a Canon 20D. I initially exported them from Lightroom as full sized jpegs. But I have now tried exporting them as 720x480 and 720x540. I export them into a folder, then tell FCE to import them and then drag and drop into the timeline. I have not adjusted any of the program settings.
The video is taken with the Minolta (a stills camera that will shoot video clips), I don't use it much, and am not as concerned about the quality there. Sometime down the road I would like to invest in an actual video camera. At this point I am making slideshows with a few video clips tossed in. After importing the video, it was smaller than full screen so I manually enlarged it, which is why it is now the larger 720x480, but I bet it originaly came in at 640x480 at 30fps.
I did have the slideshow completed, rendered it and played it on the computer in quicktime and burned it to dvd. In FCE the aspect ratio displayed normal, in quicktime and on DVD the images were stretched horizontly. In all programs, the images appear pixelated and seem to be of very poor quality even though the original images are all very sharp.
Prior to this I used iMovie and have not had any problems. FCE has for some reason proved to be more complicated than I was expecting.

  • IDVD slideshow images appear stretched or  "fat" on TV screen

Images from my camera appear normal in iPhoto and in iDVD slideshows on my computer. But when I view them on my big screen TV, the images are stretched horizontally. People and things look "fat." Playing with the TV format settings doesn't seem to help.
Is there some setting, either in iPhoto or iDVD that I am unaware of that can correct this problem?

Your DVD Player or TV set is set to stretch 4:3 content to fit you 16:9 screen.
You need to change that setting - DVD Player or TV set - to stop the stretching.

  • Text does not appear stretched in the output

    Hi,
I have a requirement to show data as stretched text in the rtf output. I tried it by electing the data field in the rtf template and changed the spacing to 3 point in font tab. But when I preview it, the text appears normal.
Is there something which I am missing? Is stretch text supported in BI templates or not?
    Thanks.

The HTML validator finds one problem that might be related:
    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://www.historicalfictionbybobturpin.com/upload_test/blog.html
''"Warning: Byte-Order Mark found in UTF-8 File. The Unicode Byte-Order Mark (BOM) in UTF-8 encoded files is known to cause problems for some text editors and older browsers. You may want to consider avoiding its use until it is better supported."''
I'm not sure if this is related or not, but it might be useful information for your programmers. I tested your link on my Linux computer, but I did not see any problem with the page using Firefox 5 or Firefox 6. (Perhaps the problem only affects Firefox on Windows computers.)

  • What is the best way to create a 16:9 & 4:3 letterboxed DVD?

    Hello,
I have just purchased a new Panasonic video camera that can record in 16:9 format. I am using iMovie 06 to create a movie in DV widescreen format to be burned in iDVD 06.
I have burned a DVD and I am not sure I understand what happened. I am viewing this dvd on a 4:3 tv. The menu appears ok despite some cropping and the video plays in 4:3 P&S mode. I then have to change the settings on the DVD player to get a letter-boxed look (I am not sure family and friend could do this). I imagine if I had a widescreen tv to test this on it would work OK with a similar adjustment of the DVD players menus?
Is the a better way to approach the creation of a DVD when you know you want it to be viewed as both letter-boxed on a 4:3 tv and full screen on a 16:9 tv?
    Thanks very much

    Is the a better way
No. You're doing what I do. Just had to change a friend's DVD player to 16:9 to play my widescreen project. In their case, the widescreen menu was chopped, but the video played OK before the change.
I am not sure family and friend could do this).
I know what you mean. Guess you'll just have to hold their hand.
BTW, these projects play fine on my widescreen TV, but I think I made the same player change when it was new (Nov 05).

  • Key scenes on DVD appear too dark!

I've recently finished a project in which many of the poorly lit but viewable scenes from a wedding appear way darker than on the Mac screen or the cam itself. Having read through the forums I now realise that the Imovie rendering/process to IDvd can lose 10-15% of the brightness (i think that was the quote?) Anyone got any ideas for a work around other than redoing it (or them) in Final Cut, which would be a nightmare! (Does everyone agree that ImovieHD's brightness effect is useless? Are there custom plugin's that are any better?)
    Found this quote below....from http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3189924&#3189924
"This is a by-product of the way the compression works. There are other DVD authoring tools that I have read provide better results in poorly lit scenes but these will start at several hundred dollars."
What are they? Is this really true?
    Thanks in advance.....

The best thing you can do is hook at least an inexpensive TV to the output on your camera so you get an idea of how it looks on a TV while you edit. Depending on your monitor calibration, it is quite possible that an image is darker on your computer screen than on a TV. Of course the better the NTSC monitor (the TV), the more accurate everything will be. I don't know of any iMovie plug-ins, but when clients bring me reception video from say a Canon camera that has a 7 lux rating (very poor in low light), I apply a gamma "filter" in FC to make the scene appear brighter. Maybe there is some sort of gamma plug-in for iMovie?
As far as better encoding software, I would look at Mpressionist, http://www.digigami.com/products.html. I hear it's the best. Others prefer BitVice, http://www.innobits.se/.
And hardware encoders are coming down in price as well... within the range of us mere mortals: http://www.optibase.com/Content.aspx?id=79 which probably yields the best results.
All that said, if you are looking for more professional results, you will need some sort of infrastructure to achieve them. What I mean by that is right now you don't know if the scenes are darker only on your computer monitor or if they are darker on an NTSC monitor. I can say that LCD camera screens tend to be far brighter than the "real" image recorded. And finally, the only way to be sure of anything is to use hardware scopes!
