16:9 movies from FCP 7 showing as 4:3 in iDVD

(posted this in iDVD forum as well to cover my bases... not sure which app is causing the problem)
So I just exported this video for a client and brought it into iDVD. It was edited in FCP 7 as an anamorphic project.
When I brought it into iDVD however it's showing as 4:3.
So I went and did the usual route: open in quicktime, adjust size, save, bring into iDVD. Perhaps its because snow leopard caused something to change in Quicktime 7 (the visual settings seems different than before) or something Final Cut is doing differently (it was displaying as 16:9 by default in Quicktime 7 which it never did before) but it refuses to open as a widescreen movie in iDVD.
Any thoughts? I need to get this video to the client ASAP!

I solved my problem, but jebus was it stupid.
Here's what you have to do (currently - who knows apple may actually fix this in the future but seeing as both iDVD and DVD SP haven't been updated in a few years I'm not holding my breath). Again, not sure if this was a Snow Leopard or FCP 7 issue but here's what you need to do.
Edit your entire sequence as you normally would. Make sure your editing in anamorphic 16:9 mode.
Once you're finished editing your sequence save it, and dupe your sequence just to be safe. Go to sequence settings and uncheck the anamorphic 16:9 box. Your sequence will now be stretched to fit the 4:3 frame.
Export this as you normally would (export>quicktime movie). I didn't do a self contained file - not sure if this makes a difference. Will do a test tomorrow to double check.
Open that file in Quicktime (7 NOT quicktime x since X removed all the useful features in quicktime). Show movie properties (cmd+j) and click "Video Track" and then visual settings. Uncheck "Preserve aspect ratio" and change to 853x480 (if your using Snow Leopard you'll notice "Scaled Size" and the values by default are 0x0 - this is normal, and what you want to change). Hit enter, close the properties, save the video. You'll notice it will now have stretched your image to be a 16:9 image and things will not look funny anymore.
Bring that file into iDVD and you're set.
Like I said, dont know WHY this is now an issue, it never was before, but I know that when I opened the video exported from the anamorphic sequence in quicktime everything displayed nicely - which it hadn't done in the past (the anamorphic flag was set for things like compressor but quicktime always showed it as a 4:3 movie). Something changed along the way and iDVD must be getting confused. Where that changed happened (be it FCP 7 or Snow leopard) im not sure. hopefully the issue will be sorted out though.

    Hey Hey!
Running OSX 10.9.4 and iTunes 11.3
I am pretty sure that this has been addressed somewhere, but I could not find it - so thanks up front!!!
How do I get my purchased movies from iTunes to show in my iTunes Library without storing all the GBs on my hard drive?  I want to show the Cloud Purchases without having hundreds of GBs taking up my HD space.
    Thanks!

    Deborah,
You cannot import contacts from your Nano to your PC via iTunes.  The syncing process is only one way.  However, if you enable disk mode on your iPod, open it up in a Windows Explorer window, you should see a Contacts folder.  From there you can copy them back over to your PC.
Even though this article is talking about adding contacts to the PC, it should walk you through some of the steps mentioned above.

  • Print list of Movies from iTunes that shows Cover.....

I am trying to print a list of movies from iTunes that shows the movie cover art. When I print the list that includes cover art, the list is sorted by "Artist" not alphabetically.
If I print alphabetically, it does not show the movie cover art, but prints in alphabetical order.
I want a list of my movies printed from iTunes in alphabetical order that also shows the movie cover art. Does anyone know how to do this? I have not tried to print this out of iTunes 9 yet as I just upgraded.
I realize that I could go through my movie list and put the movie name in the artist field, but I want to keep the artist information intact.
    Thanks for your help!

I am trying to do the same thing. The movie list with cover art sorts by director's (artist) first name.

  • Exported Movie from FCP 7 to Quicktime. Audio is only bad on ONE COMPUTER with ONE HEADPHONES, why?

Exported the movie from FCP 7 into a Quicktime video, one problem.
Have three computers...the audio sounds great on all of them when using headphones #1 (http://www.amazon.com/iHome-LifeTalks-Basic-Headset-Black/dp/B001QXDMVE/ref=sr_1 _8?ie=UTF8&qid=1407521145&sr=8-8&keywords=ihome+headset). Audio also sounds great coming out of two stereo systems.
But with headphones #2, a cheap pair of "Skull candy" headphones, the audio sounds great on computers 1 and 2, but when I listen to my video on computer 3, there is heavy static and backround noise, like a radio station that is out of tune. Everything else I listen to on computer 3 with headphones 2 sounds totally normal.
How is such a thing possible?
What steps can I take to "fix the audio"? I already "normalized the audio" (All audio was: .WAV files, recorded with a zoom H2 recorder). Could this be a hardware issue of some kind? This computer is an AspireX1430 bought 2 years ago, with whatever sound card it came with. I'd hate to put my video online only to find out later that for certain viewers the audio won't plan on their system.
    Thoughts? Thank you!

    Thanks!
Yeah it is crazy to me that everything with this headphones and computer sounds normal, except for my one video!  Other youtube videos even sound good!
Sent the video to our marketing department it will be mass emailed to 5000 customers shortly
I feel confident enough...the video sounds great on 4/5 computers at least and probably a lot more!!!!

  • XDCAM movs from FCP

I'm currently working on a project in Premiere Pro CS5 with material originally sourced from FCP as XDCAM-EX 1080p 25fps. Unfortunately the original BPAVs are currently unable to be located & I've had to use the transcoded .movs which FCP creates. I have purchased the Calibrated XD Decode codec & installed & this appears to work (the watermark has disappeared at least). However playback is stuttering after a couple of seconds of playback. I know my laptop has enough processing power as it can playback the clips in Quicktime Pro without stuttering.
FYI Laptop is a G73JW with Intel i7940QM running 8gb RAM, 500GB drive, nVidia GTX460M graphics. Normally this handles the BPAVs without any issues affecting performance. I'm wondering whether it's the 32bit Quicktime translation that might be causing this.
Once rendered these clips playback fine but obviously this would not be an ideal workflow. As I am creating split screen effect edits & plan to export them for another FCP editor to work on I'm all ears for any ideas on the best way to do this.
    Thanks

As chance would have it, I was just discussing this issue with Greg from Calibrated Software (very helpful guy!) yesterday via email. I'm going to be purchasing the DV50/DVCPROHD decoders, but had previously tried XD Decode, and noticed the slowdown. This is what he had to say:
Per the XML file - yep it can be used with Calibrated{Q} XD Decode for Windows too.
    Basically
the XML file is modified from the one that comes with PPro - and it
just tells Adobe CS5 applications (AE and PPro) that our Decode codecs
support native YUV decoding - thus PPro will ask our Decode codecs for
YUV frames which in turn makes the performance/playback much much
    faster.
Without the XML file, PPro asks our
codecs for 8-bit RGB frames - which then takes a big hit on playback -
as our codecs must first decompress the data to YUV and then convert the
YUV to RGB and then hand to PPro. The XML file let's PPro know that it
can just ask for the YUV frames directly.
You can get the XML file and instructions here: Why are XDCAM/HDV MOV files not playing back in realtime on my computer?

  • Quicktime moves from FCP

Ok - I'm officially out of my depth.
After 6 months editing a lorryload of 4x3 miniDV interviews I finally got sign-off this morning.
Client wants a quick DVD to watch over Chritmas, so I Export Quicktime movies (normal, no conversion) of all 10 timelines, simply adding .mov on the end.
I make a 4x3 DVD project in iDVD, and drop in the QT moves.
All fine and dandy, but one, just ONE of these movies insists in playing all squeezed out in 16x9.
The odd thing is that this is the second time I've done this. Last week I went through the same process, and the same clip was playing out in 16x9.
These are all new clips (I've changed the edit since then), and it's a brand new iDVD project.
    But same result.
I've checked the rogue clip in QT and iTunes, and it plays just the same as all the others.
So I tried MPEGStreamclip - and noticed some full screen red rogue frames, which suggested a problem.
I checked the other clips - they all have the red rogue frames - even though they behave normally in iDVD.
    What might be causing this?
I'm tried re-Exporting all the clips as 100% Quicktime movies from Streamclip.
The files were all much bigger then the originals. How can that be happening?
But when I reload them in Streamclip they still have the red flashes.
I've tried doing a SaveAs from Quicktime - still red flashes.
Even MPE4 versions - red flashes - and these show up in iDVD too.
Any advice gratefully received. I'm running out of time here
    Thanks
    Tom

I forget to mention that I made the original movies on a MacBook Pro running Tiger and QT 7.6.4, but was trying to make the iDVD on a new machine running Snow Leopard and QT10 - because it has a much faster burner and I'm in a hurry!
I'm now trying to make the iDVD on the older machine and there is no sign of the red flashes - plus that rogue movies plays normally.
    Phew... BUT
Someone else is making the real, proper DVD - what will happen when he tried to pick up these quicktime movies on and AVID (pre version 5)?
    Thanks
    Tom

  • Need help - creating QT movies from iPhoto slide shows

I am creating QT movies from slideshows in iPhoto. I then put the QT movies on a CD. I am having no trouble doing this, but if I give the CD to a Windows user, will she be able to view it? If not, is there any way to make it Windows compatible? Are there any other problems I should be aware of before I give these QT movies for Christmas gifts?

Any PC user that has QuickTime 5, or higher, installed will be able to view your iPhoto slide show movies on the CD.
You must use the Finder to guarantee a PC compatible CD, however.

  • HELP. Quicktime Movies from FCP with DVCPro = Black Boxes across image.

When exporting my HD movie from Final Cut Pro (5) using either Quicktime Movie or Quicktime COnversion with the footage's native setting of DVCPro HD 720p the resulting movie has thick black rectangles on the left and right sides and one right in the middle.
    Is it a codec issue?
    Please help.

It is a 16X9 CROP, not some sort of anamorphic distortion... so just choose that, and export...
If you set it to be 320X180 THAT will distort it. It should start as 320X240. The crop then results in 320X180. If it's new software it's Compressor 3.

  • Help Emergency for Exporting Quicktime Movie from FCP

    Hello -
Not sure if anyone is up at this hour, but I have a huge grant deadline TODAY and we are having trouble getting my film trailer onto a DVD. NOT newbies, checked manuals and searched more than a few forums.
Details: 11-minute sequence made with FCP version 5.0.3 G4 Tower Dual 800 Processor.
Following suggestions found here and other places, we selected sequence in FCP > Export > Using Quicktime Conversion
There is supposed to be an MPEG 2 format choice that comes up but it does not. Other choices but not MPEG 2.
In the past the editor has exported as a regular quicktime movie, self-contained, and dragged it into DVDSP and the conversion was done in DVDSP. When we try that we get "incompatible format."
So we have the trailer sequence as a regular quicktime movie, and an MPEG4 which may be of use as a coaster since from what I've read it's not readable in most DVD players.
Is there any way to convert the MPEG 4 sequence to MPEG 2 so it can be seen on a DVD player?
Please, Please help with any suggestions. Manuals HAVE been consulted prior to posting. Have been up all night, and I have to get this trailer in today. thank you for any help you can offer.

so we have one cooking in the oven now -
we ended up going with Best/120min/4:3 because the 90-min one didn't allow us to choose "all"
It's an 11-minute sequence, and hopefully in not-too-long it will be recorded on a DVD. I can't tell you how grateful I am that you responded to my smoke signal! (I am, in fact, quite fried at this point).
I'm kind of surprised that after an hour searching about this on this forum and others, no mention of how to actually do this despite a lot of mentions of "threads about this." I tried so many searches using different terms and date ranges, but i'm just glad that you were at or near your computer.
Again, thank you and sending lots of gratitude from NY. It's still cooking, so hopefully I'm out of the woods, but it will be nice if things go smoother now that the sun is up over here.
    grazie

  • QT Web Movie from FCP looks and Plays Choppy!

    Hi guys,
I finished a 4 miniute music video in FCP3. It was shot on Canon XL2 with 24p, 16:9. My "QT web movie looks and plays very choppy".
Here are my steps and settings:
    FCP>File>Export>quicktime.
    Video settings:
    . Video Compression Codec= Sorenson Video3
    . Compression Quality= Medium
    . Motion Frames Per Second= 15fps
    . Keyframes Every= 300 frames
    . Bitrate: 90 kbits/sec
    Sound Settings:
    . Audio Compressor= IMA 4:1
    . Rate= 32.000 KHz
    . Size= 16 bit
    . Use= Mono
    Please Help!
    Thanks,
    ZIA

Sounds like a field or interlacing issue, Zia.
Maybe you had interlaced checked when it should have been progressive on export.
Or maybe the other way round - hard to see from where I sit.
Any of the fcp stuff done in Motion ? - 'coz sometimes motion does not get things right and you have to manually tell it what it needs to know.
Cntrl/Right click a clip >Reveal Source (I think its called).

  • Home Sharing Issue - deleted movies from one computer show up in other

    Hi Everyone:
I have searched for an answer to this issue, but have yet to find it, which is why I am posting.
I added some mv4 ripped movies to iTunes, but deleted them, moving the file to trash. I do not see them in my iTunes library. When I go into my wife's iTunes and use Home Sharing to access my computer's iTunes, the deleted movies are visible. I have logged out of Home Sharing and logged back in, but they still show up. I want to get rid of them from Home Sharing. If I deleted them on my computer, they should not show up elsewhere.
    Thank you in advance.

I've solved the problem and I wish I could just delete my previous post, but I guess I cannot. The movies I thought were deleted were listed under a different catagory in iTunes, which I found by searching for the file extension in Spotlight. Once I found them, I deleted them and they stopped showing up in Home Sharing.

  • New Home Movies from iTunes not showing up on Apple TV

I edit a lot of home movies in Final Cut. When I am done I use "Compressor" to convert the uncompressed movie files to an Apple TV format. The problem I am having now is that after I import them into iTunes they aren't showing up on either of my two Apple TVs when i use Home Sharing on my local network. I am able to play the movies in iTune and play them on my Apple TV by using AirPlay, but I would prefer not having to do this.
    A few things to note:
    1. Software is up to date on Apple TV
    2. I have "Share my library on my local network" checked and "Share my entire library" selected under SHARING in my iTunes preferences

Are the files in the library?
I notice that music and movie categories exist, and I can watch the movies I have converted using handbrake, and iMovie for home movies that we're added to my iTunes library....but... I want to sort this into kid movies, parent movies, and home video categories.  Apple TV will be so much more useful if I don't have to use my iPad to air play my home movies.  Browsing a single list of video that includes these 3 distinct functional categories is pretty lame.   Where is my apple freedom here?
I expect this fixed or more easily configured with the new Yosemite and iOS update. I hope there is an Apple TV update to make this better too.
