16:9 Newbie Stylie

Just want to be sure that my Eassy Setup is set properly...
If I am filming and working with 16:9, should my Easy Setup be set to DV-NTSC Anamorphic?
I am filming with a Canon GL 2 on mini DV tapes...
Thanks!
Ham

if you are shooting DV, it'll either be NTSC (29.97 fps) or PAL (25 fps). Since you are in Massachussetts, it's probably NTSC.
Those new dropdowns (format and frame rate) in the Easy Setup window in FCP6 do not affect the resulting settings for the program - they are just used to limit the number of choices that apppear in the list of setups. For instance, if you choose 29.97 in the frame rates dropdown, you will only see 29.97 fps setups to choose from in the list of setups.

  • Arch Linux Beginners Guide

    Remembering the days when I installed Arch Linux for the first time I still feel that Arch misses a guide for beginners. I started one at the Wiki. Its intention is to show how you install and configure Arch Linux until you have a fully working desktop system for multimedia and office purpose. I'm still heavily improving it. If you have any suggestions or critics feel free to drop me a note or add the content to the wiki. If you find some spelling or grammar errors do the same or fix them, I'm no native speaker

    iphitus wrote:article is too big. provide links to existing wiki pages and documentation. If things change and you dont know, your article will be broken.
    Sure...but you will have this problem with all wiki pages. If you don't have a maintainer for bigger articles, the whole idea of the wiki won't work well.
    iphitus wrote:For example, change the install documentation to the install guide. Same goes for network, link to existing pages, and if there isnt one, create one.
    I disagree with this one. I personally like the idea of having one basic guide which will led in most cases to a fully working system and does not stop right after the installation, which will leave you with a single prompt. I tried to explain the "basic things" and give links for digging deeper (I may have failed at this, but I tried and will try again).
    Therefore you are right about linking, but as you may have seen I tried to link to existing pages if they exist and give more than just a basic information. As far as I know no install guide for voodoo exists yet.
    What I really don't want to do, is to create just a meta page that only links to other pages, for three reasons:
    * It's annoying to read if you have to follow a link, get back and follow the next link...
    * Because there is no single maintainer for all the sub pages, you can only link to pages that are known stable, otherwise the beginner will be totally lost fast
    * Some of the other pages are way too technically for a beginner, they quickly start with special things for exotic purposes (mainly because experienced people don't like writing about basic things I believe)
    iphitus wrote:Some of it seems a bit overkill too, you give a newbie style how to for tiny things, but completely gloss over even a basic description of what the "daemons line" is. Newbies using this beginners guide learn bugger all, as they just copy from the beginner guide. When things go wrong, they come to the forums rather than use initiative. I guess the installation and configuration acts as a form of natural selection.
    I think we have a different opinion how a wiki works, I always thought you start with something and improve it over time, when questions or suggestions arrive.
    A wiki will get better if more than one people is involved, therefore sharing and discussing at an early point of time is reasonable.
    On the other hand you are absolutely right about the daemons line, which should be explained for a beginner (EDIT: I added a paragraph about daemons a few moments ago).
    But I think differently about the natural selection. I never felt that Arch Linux aims to be an elitist distribution and that an acceptance test is needed if you want to use it...what I have seen from the community so far, Arch seems in fact to be the opposite. I like Arch for being clean, simple and logical constructed, not for being complicated. I'm too old to get     self-confidence just from installing an operating system.
    If users use the forum to ask the same questions again and again, our beginners guide is incomplete and we should fix it.
    iphitus wrote:Things like:

    This may not be representative, but a better FAQ and Jargon for Newbies (damn, I really love this elite attitude ) wouldn't helped him:
    Someone at my blog wrote:Thanks for the guide! I tried installing Arch over Christmas and had the worst time trying to figure that out. So I of course went back to my trusty Gentoo. I always liked Gentoo because even though its an "advanced distro" they provide you with plenty of documentation. Arch on the other hand does not and that really bothered me. But now that I have a Gentoo style guide, I think I'll try it again!
    Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate your criticism because it makes me think twice about some things and will most probably lead to a better guide.

  • AirPort Express: Help with terminology

    Hi all,
    I've read lots of great posts here, but the terminology isn't always consistent, and I need help understanding the difference between the products.
    I would like to buy an AirPort Express base station (ie: router) and stream audio to two different rooms.
    Now, the AirPort Express is the remote device I would plug into the wall, right?
    From what I understand, I can buy an base station which comes with the remote device. If I want to buy a second remote device, what should I do a search for?
    Appreciate any feedback. Sorry for the newbie style question.
    Steve

    Checkout KB 107908, Identifying AirPort hardware.
    The base station is that "flying saucer" like device Apple sells, right?
    Those have been discontinued. The "flying saucer"s that Apple has sold in the past are the graphite 802.11b AirPort base station (ABS), dual Ethernet (snow) ABS, and 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
    There's a smaller device that plugs into the wall, and has an ethernet port and an audio output. Right so far?
    I believe you are referring to the AX. Don't let its small size and shape fool you. It is also a base station.
    If so, what are these devices called? I'd like to buy the router and two of the remote devices with audio outputs.
    If all of your computers are connecting wirelessly, you can buy 3 AX.
    If any of your computers need to connect viaEthernet, you need an AEBS and 2 AX.

  • Why am I constantly getting asked to register my iPad?

    I have had my New iPad since the day it was release. EVERY day, when I start iTunes, I get asked to register. I have.....
    Fully completed the form and gone on to set up the iPad. SEVERAL TIMES
    Hit registered later and gone on to use my iPad without hassle. SEVERAL TIMES
    Hit never register and gone on the use my iPad without hassle. SEVERAL TIMES
    However EVERY time I start iTunes, I am asked to register my iPad.
    After spending €600 on a new iPad, I would expect registration to be a gimme.
    I do not want to hear from an apple fanboi that I should register, (done that), register later (done that also) and never register (done that as well). I want to hear from an Apple employee saying that they have fixed the bug with their registeration process. Oh, and do NOT tell me it is because your servers are busy and try again later. I have tried within every hour of the day, yes, EVERY hour of the day.
    I am happy to register as I am a developer, however I would not release software with such a fundamentl issue in it, and it sure as heck would not get into the iTunes store with a blatant, newbie style error like this.
    I look forward to a complete and full answer.

    Look at Apple feedback.

  • Files all over...

    newbie-style...
    why are all my files being backed up on my Macintosh HD? Are my settings messed up?
    Scratch disc = EXTERNAL HD
    Waveform = EXTERNAL HD
    Thumbnail= EXTERNAL HD
    Autosave= EXTERNAL HD
    Basically, after working a little on my project my computer will suddenly pop-up a warning telling me that I have no memory. Then I go into my Macintosh HD and find a bunch of random clips from different projects... I believe they are backups... But to be safe I made a new folder in my EXTERNAL HD and sent them all there... then everything works fine again...
    Is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks, Hope this isn;t a dumb question...
    Ham

    When you install FCP, a FCP documents folder is created by default on your system drive. You must manually set the folders to go elsewhere. If you ever launch FCP WTHOUT the external drive attached, or use the incorrect start up procedure. the program can default back to that system disc, or create another folder.

  • Outlook Web Access vs ActiveSync

    Hi all,
    Apologies if this question was already asked, but I can't seem to find it if so.
    I work at a largish company who use Outlook Exchange for our corporate mail. One of the main reasons I got my iPhone 3G is so I read my work mail wherever I am without having to ask for a company Blackberry.
    However I may have made a mistake as I didn't realise how worried about security the firm is. I cannot set up ActiveSync for the life of me - it just says wrong password even when it is correct - and this may be because:
    1) The firm does not allow IMAP or POP access to Exchange
    2) I do not think they have ActiveSync activated on teh server and I cannot change this
    However, we do have Outlook Web Access (OWA) which I can access through a normal browser. In fact I can get this working on Safari but I have to enter the username/domain and password every single time which is unworkable. Therefore my question is:
    - Can I access work email through iPhone native email client, perhaps by utilising the Outlook Web Access (or finding a way to still use ActiveSync)?
    Thanks a lot for any help, I'm tearing my hair out here (in a newbie style of way)!!

    Unfortunately not, OWA using some fancy coding that means it will never store your password in your broswer. You have to type it in every time.
    Your only choice is to yell and scream at your IT department until they enable ActiveSync.
    Please note some key words that may help you achieve this goal:
    *Remote Wipe* - This allows, in the event of the phone been stolen, for the phone to be wiped remotely.
    *Limited Exposure via Limited Backdated Emails* - This means that if for any reason the person who stole your phone is smart enough to disable all internet access (WiFi, 3G, EDGE, GPRS) BEFORE turning (or the wipe command is issued) on the headset there will be a limited amount of mail in the box... the options are 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month (default), no limit.
    And finally, *Increased Productivety* - You will be able to increase the produtivity of your working by getting mail on your phone.

  • I changed  computers - and my artworks have vanished!

    Hi
    OK, hopefully this is a really easy "newb" style problem. I changed my computer and installed itunes again (and had to delete ALL the duplicate files one by one, that was fun).
    Now - second problem. ALL my files now have no artwork. I thought it might just be the free (legal) downloads from Myspace, but even the songs I've bought straight from itunes don't have any artwork either - and it won't let me put any new artwork in myself either.
    Help?

  • Setting up a web server

    Hi,
    I have four or five domains registered and now I’m paying for web hosting (not much, but…). For many months now, I’m reconsidering to set up my own web server (I have DSL connection 24/7 so…).
    One idea was to go with MS 2003 SERVER on some older PC I have, but since I’m not some expert (more or less dummy) for this things… gone down the toilet .
    Then I bought an iMac (the best investment in past few years regarding computers) and on apple.com site I saw OS X SERVER software and more I was reading this more seemed that this is something for me, for my idea to set up a server.
    Now I bought on eBay used G4 Mac Mini and I will install a OS X SERVER (please, don’t tell me that I’m trying to put a BMW engine into SMART… I know that and I hope that will somehow work… if not, there is still eBay to sell everything and there is still a toilet for my idea:-( ). However, the pages I own are not some crucial things for state security, but still I need PHP5 and MySQL (as far as I know OSX have this, right?).
    My questions are:
    To set up web server I need a DNS (like: nameserver.mydomain.com) otherwise nothing, right?
    Do I have to register somewhere my own DNS like domains and to pay annually for this (any suggestion where)?
    Hosting my other web sites (with other domains) on OSX will not be a problem. I suppose that OSX can do this?
    If I have nameserver.mydomain1.com, will be a problem to set up an email server/account for mydomain2.com or I have to set up a DNS also for this second domain (will be on same server)?
    I’m sorry, if my questions are stupid (on the other hand, someone said that there are no stupid questions, the answers can be stupid), but I’m really not familiar with this things.
    Many thanks in advance and excuse me for my English,
    M

    Faganel, did you ever find a "Leopard Server as a Web-Server - Setup for Dummies" kind of guide or article?
    If so, I'd really like answers and tips, to the same kind of questions you have.
    I don't think this is the best forum, to ask for newbie-style advice. The people here are hard-working system-admins, who does web-server setups for a living, and they really don't have time, to answer questions like ours.
    I've done dozens of Windows 2000 web-server setups at work, and the funny thing is, I could probably have helped you, had you gone with the Windows 2003 Server
    However I'm trying to get some Xserves into our server room at work, and am evaluating Leopard Server here at home, and would like to do the same thing as you - Setup a Leo web-server with dyn-dns or something like that.
    But because my knowledge is Windows, and because I've always worked with our own DNS and IP's, I'm having trouble getting my Leopard web-server here at home, to serve to the internet.
    I can get it to serve perfectly to my own sub-net, but when I try to access it from the outside, I get nothing. I've setup my DSL-router to point web-traffic to the Leopard web-servers IP, but still get nothing.
    However, I've just started, and I'm sure I'll get it to work, but some pointers would be really cool - obviously it can be done, just need to get my head around the fact, that I'm home and dealing with DSL and DSL-routers, and not the Ciscos and SonicWalls I'm used to at work
    I must say though, that Leopard Server is an amazing product, and I'm positive well need to start buying Xserves from now on at work. The time saved setting them up and administering them, is HUGE when compared to the Win2000 boxes I have to fight every day at work
    I also think Apple could make a very cool home-server, if they wanted too - I have no idea if it would sell, but Leo Server is almost so easy to setup now, that most people could get the hang of it ...
    Anyways, if you or someone else has a guide, to getting it to serve webpages behind a DSL-router with a static IP, I'd be more than grateful - I'm sure this would impress my boss enough, that I'd get a handsome budget to explore Leopard Server some more - I't just awesome from a SysAdmins point of view.

  • Newbie question here re: character styles

    Greetings,
    I am a newbie with regards to InDesign, so bear with me.
    I know that I can create styles in the usual way, but can I also create a style by using an existing piece of text and saving it's attributes?
    Thank you very much.
    Rob

    Yes. Just click in the formatted text and create the style.
    As a newbie, you may want to watch some video tutorials and step through a few lessons to get a good foundation. Here's a good place to start:

  • JS:CS3 Newbie needs help! find/change character styles

    I'm new to scripting and JavaScript is giving me a headache, but I'll keep trying. What I'm trying to do is automate a few things so that the production time of our school newspaper is reduced while insuring accuracy.
    I've played around a little with the text find change sample and the changing or adding paragraph styles in the InDesignCS3_ScriptingGuide_JS.pdf and I barely understand what I'm doing.
    When us page designers receive text to place in the document, our editors mark the text with tags like: < b >text< / b >, where the word "text" is to be bolded. (there wouldn't any spaces between < and b and > etc. I just did that so It'll show up here). We have basic character styles and paragraph styles set up, and we just started working with nested styles.
    Is there a way we can search for the < b > tag and bold everything after it up until the < / b > tag? Sort of the way it does for html (the way it would do for this message if I took out the spaces). It'll be great if it could remove the tags as well, but if not, I know I could create a find/change script to do the removal afterwards.
    I appreciate any input.
    Thanks!

    You've not found yourself the easiest of tasks! You need GREP find/replace, not text. Do you have any experience with GREP? It's worth investigating, it's a powerful feature. The script below handles bold. For clarity, it doesn't do any error checking: it assumes that there's a document with text in it and that the document contains a character style called 'bold'.
    // talk to Indesign, nobody else
    #target indesign
    // reset the Find/Change dialog
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    // find everything between <b> and  (including these codes)
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = '<b>.+?</b>';
    // add 'bold' style
    app.changeGrepPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = 'bold';
    // make the changes
    app.activeDocument.changeGrep();
    // now delete the <b> and </b> codes
    app.findGrepPreferences = app.changeGrepPreferences = null;
    app.findGrepPreferences.findWhat = '</?b>';
    app.changeGrep();
    You can adapt it easily to handle other codes, and at a later stage you could generalise it so that you needn't repeat whole bunches of code.
    Good luck with your first forays. Again, it's not the easiest of tasks, but it's worth getting to grips with.

  • Nested styles within TOC - a newbie

    Hi, I wonder if someone can help with a TOC query. It will involve nested character styles which I've not really got my head around
    Currently there are two paragraph styles in the book to appear in the TOC in their own styles (so four paragraph styles in total - Chapter Number, Chapter Name, Chapter Number TOC and Chapter Name TOC).
    They currently generate in their simplest form in the TOC as:
    Chapter 1
    An introduction to your new home ................8
    I simply want the chapter name to appear on the same line.
    Chapter 1 An introduction to your new home ................8
    Thanks for any help anyone.

    Peter Spier wrote:
    Peter G,
    I don't do XML, but I think the answer is basically the same as initially outlined. If it's one paragraph with some sort of magic line break character, that character is going to be carried into the TOC and create a line break there as well, and if it's two paragraphs sepatated by a magic separator, it's going to remain two paragraphs. Break characters don't just disappear on their because we decide we don't want to see them -- they have to be deleted, and styles cannot add or remove text, only change the formatting.
    The  neat thing about the No Break style (which never occurred to me before this morning), is precisly that it doesn't depend on any break characters to work, only the supposition that the second part of the paragraph will be too long to fit unbroken on the same line as the first part, and that it will fit on a new line. ID simply breaks the text at that point because it has no better choice. This is not, unfortunately, guaranteed to work for all paragraphs as it depends on column widths and text length to work in combination to force the break.
    The No Break approach is a good solution if the TOC text frame and paragraph properties can be made to wrap at the allowed break position.
    I was trying to find a counterpart to FrameMaker's run-in paragraph feature, but as you verified, it's not possible. FYI, here's how it looks in FM:
    The source document uses ChapNum paragraph format (aka "ID paragraph style" for "Chapter number 1:" which is all in the autonumber part of the paragraph. The ChapTitl paragraph format is used for the "Chapter title" text.
    As in ID, the two paragraph formats/styles are designated to be extracted by the TOC process. FM's TOCs are always generated as independent files. In the TOC document, ChapNum format/style becomes ChapNumTOC, and ChapTitle format/style becomes ChapTitleTOC. The *TOC styles can be styled differently from their source paragraphs. So, ChapNumTOC is given the run-in property which allows the next paragraph in the document - here it's the ChapTitlTOC paragraph with "Chapter Title" text - to follow it on the same line. However, you can see the green pilcrow at the end of the ChapNumTOC paragraph, which identifies it as a true paragraph, that happens to lack the property that starts it on a new line. Once the TOC's formatted properly, every subsequent TOC process is completely "hands off," i.e., no manual touch up needed, nothing to forget. This is why I keep submitting an enhancement request for this ability, and also encourage others.

  • Newbie: 7210 style and 9914A style controller ??

    I'm new to GPIB, and am considering implementing Labview or HP VEE.
    I'm in the stages of identifying a controller that supports both
    packages. I've seen some references to 7210 style and 9914A style
    cards. Is there a significant difference, or is this transparent to my

    Also, where's a good place to get GPIB cables? Controller (preferably

    Unless you are designing equipment that uses these ICs there is no need
    to worry about it.
    FYI the 9914A (from TI) is no longer available
    The 7210 (from NEC) is only marginally superior.
    National Instruments makes replacements that are supersets of these old
    ones.
    They also make one that is much better than either.

    Since I like NI (National Instruments) I sould say you can buy everything
    you need from them.
    I will say that their cables are a little less rugged than those available
    from HP
    (Hewlett-Packard or is it Agilent now ??).
    Some GPIB caveats:
    No more than 15 devices can be connected to the same controller.
    At least half of these must be powered up.
    Maximum cable length is 15m (you can usually get more at lower speeds).
    No more than 2-3 m between each device.
    None of these are hard and fast rules but if you follow them there should be
    no problems.

  • Newb in trouble :( - How do I set a home page/ link it to my other pages? CSS style.

    I'm scouring these forums looking for someone who can reply to me in real time. Basically, I need to create a basic website for a project, where I have a main page, linking to my other pages that are divided by content. For example, main page would have a brief explanation of what the site is about, and then if you clicked on some text in my explanations, etc, it would link you to a different page on my site. Here are some things I am stuck on:
    How do i make one page the first one you'd see if you opened the website?
    How do i hyperlink to pages within my local root?
    How do I hyperlink to internet based online pages?
    How do i burn the whole website onto a cd, so that if I were to give the cd to someone else, all the local links AND the internet links would work?
    These questions are all I need to figure out right now. If anyone could help I'd be grateful. I'll be refreshing this for a few hours

    How do i make one page the first one you'd see if you opened the website?
    Save it with a filename that appears in your host's default filename list.  Ask your host what filenames appear in that list - usually "index.html" is there.  You could try that filename first....
    How do i hyperlink to pages within my local root?
    Select the text for the link trigger, and use the Link field of the Property inspector to browse to and select the target filename in your local site.
    How do I hyperlink to internet based online pages?
    Pages that are not present in your local root folder?  You'd have to enter those links manually by selecting the text for the link trigger, and entering "http://www.example.com/path_to_file.html" in the Link field of the Property inspector.  It's important that you enter the *fully qualified* address of the page, i.e., the protocol (http://) the domain name (www.example.com) and the path to the file (/path_to_file.html).
    How do i burn the whole website onto a cd, so that if I were to give the cd to someone else, all the local links AND the internet links would work?
    Copy all the files within the local root folder to the CD.  If you have made the links properly, they will all work (provided the user is connected to the internet when using the CD, and provided they initially open (manually) the "index.html" file to start.

  • Newbie help me obi wans: ...coded locked by template or translator

    Hi Folks,
    I'm such a newbie to DW   I've been using it for a few years actually, but in a very basic sense.
    I dloaded a template, added some graphics, made some buttons etc.. and of course text, but when it comes to coding,
    I've only figure out how to add spaces  lol
    I'm trying to add a flash video to my samples page.  I can add images, but every time I add the .flv, I receive the subject message.
    So here are 2 issues:
    1. I don't know if this related to #2, but I can't erase the 3rd column...or even use it. it's locked - I see a circle with a line through it.  The template I bought did say it was 3 columns, but I don't understand why I can't touch it.  I've attached a tiff of what it looks like right now.
    2. as the subject says "changing code is locked by the template is locked a template or translator" is giving me grief.
    I've reviewed the previous posts on the subject, but I'm afraid my newbie-ness has left me not knowing what to do.  ie. I can't find a time/date to change...I see the <head> and <script>, but they're greyed out on the one page I'm trying to edit.  They're not greyed out on the template page however.
    I also tried saving my .dwt as a new template, but that didn't work either.
    Here is code for my Samples page.  I'll post the code for the template page under that.
    <html><!-- #BeginTemplate "/Templates/Main2.dwt" --><!-- DW6 -->
    <head>
    <!-- #BeginEditable "doctitle" -->
    <title>dvdslideshow</title>

    thanks for the quick reply!
    I found the 2 things to change, but when I go back to my page...everything is gone!  eek
    (fear no panic - I did back up my website prior to making any changes
    (file attached).
    it looks like there is only 1 column instead of 3 sections. I was hoping to lose just the one on the right.
    here is the new code from my Samples page (not the template)  I"ll post that below.

  • Newbie Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g feature availability question

    Newbie question here. I am new to Oracle 11g and new to this forum. I ran a search on this question and came up empty so hopefully there is a kind and knowlegable soul wo can help.
    I recall in earlier versions of Oracle Enterprise Manager for earlier versions of Oracle there was something called Oracle Enteprise Manager Reporting accessible from the OEM web.
    One of its key features was the ability to make custom "Additional Reports". In our current environment this is installed and works great. I don't know if it was an add on to OEM, or if it was built in. It was built a long time ago and I wasn't arround for that build. All I know is it works and it suits our needs.
    Well we are now trying to build a new Oracle dev box to replace the current dev environment. We would prefer to not lose any existing functionality we have... and if possible not have to reinvent the wheel. The new box has Oracle 11g.
    **Here comes the dumb newbie questions. **
    Does Oracle 11g Enterprise Manager support 9i-style Enterprise Manager Reporting and Custom Reports?
    Is it called that in 11g or has it been renamed to something else?
    Is it it a simple matter of configuration or is it an add on that needs to be installed?
    Any help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Wayward Oracle Newbie looking for an Oracle Home

    Oracle 11g does not support 9i-style custom reports. There is a new reporting framework - Information Publisher available in Grid Control 10+ versions. The new reporting framework does support custom reports as well. Click on the Reports tab to access the functionality.
