16:9 ratio on SD -- is this possible

I shot all my teaching videos at HD 16:9. I am trying to set up a DVD Studio layout that will show 16:9 on a newer tv that itself is 16:9 (although not HD), and then shown on a regular TV but without stretching/compressing the image. I assumed that this could be done using the black sidebars (or whatever they are called).
Is this even possible? I don't have that much hair left to pull out! Thanks.
Bill

No panic at all. You just work in 16:9. The DVD player, set top or computer, takes care of displaying properly.
You edit in 16:9. Bring your finished MOV into Compressor and select an appropriate DVD preset. You'll make sure it's set to 16:9. When you submit the job for rendering it will create an M2v file and an AC3 file.
Setup a 16:9 NTSC DVD project in DVD SP. Import your audio and video files. If properly done DVD SP will already know the file is 16:9. Make sure the track and the menus and all are set for 16:9. You're pretty much done. The DVD player attached to a DVD will make the correct presentation. This is set in the players setup menus. If it's attached to a 4:3 set it will letterbox your project. If it's attached to a 16:9 set, it will leave your show alone. That part is easy. Of course the DVD player has to be set correctly. You can't control that unless you check it yourself.
