16:9 recording on a 4:3 chip confuses iMovie - any solutions?

I have a Panasonic NV-GS300 camcorder, which claims to record in 16:9 but in fact uses 4:3 ratio chips and then crops the image. My problem is that when I import footage into iMovie, it decides the images should be 4:3, and squeezes them. I've tried letterboxing the imported clips, but am not happy with the results - it often makes the app crash, and you don't get true widescreen.
I guess I could start recording in 4:3 mode, or scream at Panasonic, but I wondered if anyone knew of a way of convincing iMovie that the footage is already 16:9?

as you know already, the chip in your camcorder, like in most other (non-professional) camcorders is 4:3 format and your camera "cheats" a little in order to record widescreen footage. This is a normal procedure for consumer camcorders.
In order to get the widescreen footage accepted with the right aspect ratio, your camcorder embeds a so-called "flag" in it, which tells the software how to treat the material.
In my opinion, there are two possibilities:
1. The widescreen flag is not being set (properly) by the camcorder
2. iMovie doesn't see/recognize the flag, thus treats the footage as 4:3 and distorts it.
I personally shoot "false" widescreen with two Sony camcorders and have never had problems getting my footage into iM.
In order to see where the problem lies, you could try to view/capture with a different software like Vidi or BTV Pro.

Actually the reason to use Quantum SCSI tape recorder is to back-up big amount of data (propriety movies footage) both on PC (what is quite easy, using SCSII host adapter with VHDCI 68 connector) and iMac what seems to be not easy. All my search by Google leads to that conclussion, they finished production of SCSI-to-USB or FireWire because somebody stopped to produce chips to covert protocols. So even buying noe second-hand adapter, no guaranty it's still working with Lion (nobody is developing drivers anymore). Strange is, nobody or just a few are using SCSII (Ultra 320) devices (while the transfer is not bad, 320 MBps what is 2560 Mbps, so the only limitation is tape recording (some 80 MBps) not an interface. Using compression mode I can (and I do) record 1,6 TB of footage data. However quite slow, is safe and cheap, comparing with any HD storage solution. USB 2 is much more limited.
I'm using Time Capsule for buck-up. But even 3 TB one day will be full of data, then old back-ups will be eaten by new once, what is not good idea for archives. I'm using another 2TB NAS HD (2x2TB RAID 1), but this is also going to be full soon.
Of course, you are right, the option is another machine (OSX,Win,Linux or Solaris) equipped with SCSII controller. But this requires another machine, just for back-up time to time, and in practice iMac folders must be shared with that small auxiliary machine because amount of data practically excluding even temporary data collection on auxiliary machine. And it must be transfer by wire, not WIFI, my only network. Tape recording is in my case really good, professional solution, isn't it?
Anyway, if somebody has similar requirements as me, and found the solution for SCSI, please let me know. So far, follow Jan's idea, I'm thinking about some embeded mini PC, fanless, equipped with slot for SCSI, with SOME smart system on-board, to deal with iMac for type recording. The option is previous Apple model, but to be honest, I became Mac/OSX user 4 years ago. I fell in love with Mac, but my knowledge about previous models is based on Google....
My desk becomes full of boxes. Do you know how big Quantum TC-L42BX is ? Is very big. And now another box.....another keyboard....another screen... And one small adapter could solve the problem. Eh....

How to record itunes visualizer and use it in imovie?

I want to record iTunes Visualizer (with music) and put that footage on iMovie. First of all, how do i record the visualizer?? I was on youtube and i found a bunch of visualizer videos, so i know it is possible to record it.
I have iTunes 10, iMovie 09, and a Mac OS X Version 10.5.8 if that helps.

A wrong posting has been posted at R/3, its has been deleted once they came to know its wrong at R/3.
Now the Problem is wrong data has come into Delta Queue RSA7.
We are unable to extract the data in BW. Its not even coming till PSA also so that we can delete at PSA itself that particular record.
Is there any solution to delete the Single Record in Delta Queue at R/3 -RSA

You need an app for that. Apple's iMovie app (for iPhone and iPad) does that just fine, but there may be others.

and i like a drum loop thats in garageband
just some drum set loops that i like
how can i adjust their speed so that they go on beat with my guitar riff and actually sound good?
will these change ALL the tempo of my project?
I just want to be able to record a guitar riff, select a drum track, and sync the drum track to the guitar riff so it's on beat and i can make the song sound more complete

The question here is timing. If you recorded your parts sticking to an exact tempo, then you can add a drum loop. But if you didn't set the BPM to match your recording you're going to have trouble. You'd have to then figure out the BPM you played at, then set it accordingly, uncheck "follow tempo & pitch" for the regions you already recorded, then add the loops. But, as I said, unless you followed the tempo exactly, which is very unlikely, it won't match. Go ahead and experiment and you'll see what we're saying.
You can create your own beat after the fact by playing software drums along with your parts, but that will take longer for sure.
But why not lay down the loops and then replay the parts you wrote?

Capture recorded tv programs on my sky+ with imovie

I have a sky+ (pvr) box which has a function to allow a dvd recorder to record programs on it's hard drive. From what I can see the box simply plays them for the dvd recorder to record.
My question is this - is it possible to wire a sky+ box to my mac to record the program to my hard drive to the import into imovie?
I would have to use an RF cable so any advice on necessary hardware would good too.

I believe iMovie only supports direct importing of video via Firewire from a camera capable of machine control from that output. I think you would have to capture the video from your sky thing, with something like Snapz Pro, then convert it to a compatible format for iMovie, but by that time, you may not need to import it into iMovie if your intention is to simply capture the video for viewing on your Mac.

Can't record more than 71:16 of audio in any session

When I open a new session, arm an audio track and start recording, Logic Pro inform me that I have 71:15 left of recording space. I have more than 80gig free on my recording drive. Once I run out those 71:15 of recording, I can't record any more audio in that track. Arming the track and pressing record makes the computer try to record, but then something happens (a window flashes faster than I can read it) and the session is simply put into play at the insertion point. I have turned of the maximum recording time, and I've also tried setting it to 500 minutes.
Help please...

the track end marker for future reference can be found in two places:
1. scroll to the end of the arrange page (horizontally). at the top of the screen is the time ruler - you should see a small white box. on the left the numbers are in white and to the right the numbers are greyed out because that's where logic will stop recording. drag the marker to the right and the number of bars in the arrange page will increase.
2. in the transport, below the tempo display is a number - this represents the bar where logic will play upto. Cick, hold and drag up or down to increase/decrease it.

Audiobooks stop playing and start repeating a sound (like a broken record). Music plays as it should. Any suggestions?

Audiobooks (from Audible) play until the later chapters in the books. Then, it stops playing, and sounds like a broken record stuck on one sound. I've tried re-syncing. I've restored factory settings and I've deleted the book from the library and reloaded it into iTunes. Any suggestions? It's happened with more than one book.

I have the same issue and went to the genius bar. They tried something in iTunes but it didn't work. So they proposed me to leave them my computer for a few days so that they can figure out what this is. Unfortunately I cannot do that right now.
