16:9 sequence becomes 4:3 QT movie

I'm using FCPHD 4.5 with 16:9 DV footage (720x480 anamorphic)
I edit my sequence in FCP in 16:9 (Pixel aspect is NTSC CCIR 601 and Anamorphic is checked) and do an Export/Quicktime Movie (DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic)
I open the resulting file in QT Pro and it is displayed as 4:3.
Same if I open the file in FCP.
I have in the past opened this kind of file and have had it display correctly.
It seems like if I add a filter or text generator, this is when the problem begins. (and won't go away)
Any ideas?

sad to say but it seems to be a bug in the way FCP writes the file header info, metadata or whatever it is.
In particular, this issue has actually gotten worse from 4.x to 5.x. At least with FCP 4.x, if you exported a QT Movie, then (re)imported it into your project, the clip would be recognized as anamorphic. No such luck in FCP 5.x.
Just so I don't confuse anyone, QT Player never has recognized the anamorphic flag in a QT Movie. That is, File > Export > QuickTime Movie or Final Cut Pro Movie (for those who remember FCP 3). But at least FCP used to. Now even that doesn't happen...
try using MPEG Streamclip ... works a treat. take any 4:3 clip and "Export to Quicktime..." press the Options button and change it to 16:9. let the exporter write the file, and then open it in QT (ta da!) go ahead and open it in FCP too, check the clip properties ... still 4:3 frame size but note that the anamorphic flag is checked
As you're no doubt aware, this mimics the File > Export > Using QuickTime Conversion workflow so long as the machine in question has QuickTime 7.1 (down to the ability to select Aspect Ratio and Scan Mode) and results (like QT Conversion) in both QT & FCP recognizing the anamorphic nature of the clip.
Now, I bring all this up (that I know you're aware of) because you state in a few posts that exporting via QT Conversion causes all frames to be recompressed and that's a big no-no. Can you share the basis of that claim?
My understanding is that with QT conversion - so long as the key details (codec, frame rate/size, scan mode, etc) are identical to the settings of your sequence) - no (re)compression takes place. What I've read is that it's essentially the same thing as exporting a self-contained QT movie, except with better metadata information (true display size, associated applications, etc).

    If delivering your content from an LMS, there should be an option to play the content in a separate browser window...without toolbars.  This makes it a lot easier to predict what size you need to build your course.
    After factoring in all the variables and using trial and error on a number of systems, with and without LMSs, I've found a size of 995x627 to be almost ideal.  It's big enough to display most software apps and websites, but small enough to be viewable by users on 1024x768 systems.
    You have to remember that if you have a significant number of end-users on 1024x768 and that's the lowest common resolution you need to build for, then you CANNOT make your screen size 1024x768.  You have to build smaller to allow for toolbars, browser chrome, etc.
    One of the first things any wise elearning developer does when they begin a project, before they start creating content, is to survey their user base and find out what constraints are imposed within which they need to work.  Things like monitor resolution, Flash-player version, LMS, bandwidth all play a part in the success or failure of your project.  Find out early rather than later.

  • Exporting sequence metadata embedded in a movie?

    We have a project with many different sequences, each representing a different DVD's worth of information. Each sequence has unique metadata, involving year, subject, etc. (we were using the comments fields for this) We were testing sequence exports using Quicktime conversion, but when we brought the generated movie files back into a different project file in FCP, the metadata was not preserved in the newly generated media.
    Is there any way to accomplish this? Can we "embed" sequence metadata into an exported movie file?

    That isn't SEQUENCE metadata, that is CLIP metadata. Anything in the MASTER COMMENTS or LOG NOTES fields, those are tied to the Browser and project. They will not be included in any data that you export as a Quicktime movie. Even if you made a lot of comments and filled in all the fields on the clip, if you export ONLY THAT CLIP as a QT movie...those comments will not follow. They are tied to the project.
    You can put MARKERS on the timeline, make them chapter markers and make comments there. That information will be retained in the exported file.

    You can't. You can't export part of a sequence. Duplicate it and remove the bits you don't want to export from the duplicate.

  • Sequences - Test Organzer:  How to move more than 1 test case at a time

    Hello,
    I would like to be able to move multiple test cases within a sequence but I do not know how.  If I highlight multiple rows and select Move Test Case only 1 of the rows will move.  This is fine if your test package only has a few transactions but if you have many it becomes very time consuming.
    Does anyone know how to move more than one test case at a time within a sequence?
    Regards,
    Corinne Taylor

    Hi Corinne,
    Actually I do not have any solution for that either. I am also only able to move the test cases one by one, which indeed can become very time consuming. There I have a small question to you: when I am in the web-based application to change the sequence of the test cases, everything goes really slow. Selecting the test package in the browser, going to change mode, selecting the test cases, creating a test sequence...it all takes time before I can continue. Is it the same with you? Else I will need to look at what is going wrong on our side.
    Thanks and best regards,
    Kristof

  • Sequence becomes unrendered on attempted export

    Hi
    We have an HD project (ProRes 422 HQ, 1900x1080) in FCP6.0.1 (Quicktime 7.2) on a MacPro 2x2.66GHz, 4GB RAM. Kona LHe card also installed.
    We have sequences that are fully rendered. If I go to File - Export - Quicktime Movie, the sequence then becomes video-unrendered. (Sometimes a green bar, sometimes a red bar). I don't even have to modify the export settings or start the export, just open that Export window.
    Is this normal? Has anyone else experienced it? What to do? It's driving us mental.
    Thanks!
    Matt

    That makes sense, David.
    However, my preferred workflow is to keep my settings the same in the export, and then let Compressor do the transcoding. This lets me get back to FCP as quickly as possible. I can't check it now (since FCP is doing the export as I type!) but in the export window, the video and audio are both set to "Use sequence settings" (or words to that effect), and it's a self-contained movie.
    Now, would the export be faster if I didn't tick "self-contained"? Would it basically be creating a reference file that I could still process with Compressor? That would speed things up a lot.

  • How do i export a sequence to an uncompressed quicktime .mov file?

    hello everyone.
    I have a little problem.
    I have a 20 secs sequence that needs to be exported from my FCP 6.0.3 to UNCOMPRESSED quicktime .mov file. Its HDV footage.
    These are the steps I've taken.
    I go to FILE>EXPORT>QUICK TIME MOVIE. I have all the settings to current setting, and I have checked the "Make Movie Self-Contained" option.
    When I'm done exporting, I get a .mov file, but its a Final Cut Pro file, not a quicktime file.
    This means I can't open in a PC, where I have to do some compositing.
    I would really appreciate if anyone can give me some advise or tips on how to get my export .mov file to be a quicktime file uncompressed .
    Thanks
    -r

    The Uncompressed 4:2:2 codecs only come with Final Cut Pro. Two ways:
    1) In FCP, go to File > Export > QuickTime Conversion. Set format to QuickTime Movie and click Options. Go to Settings under Video and set Compression Type to None. Put all the sliders at maximum. Click Ok, deselect Prepare for Internet Streaming and click Ok. Export the file.
    2) This is the one I personally prefer, as it will be compatible with any system, even if they don't have QuickTime. Go to File > Export > QuickTime Conversion. Under Format, select Image Sequence. Go to Options, set Format to TIFF and enter the FPS. Click Export and you will have a series of sequentially-numbered images that most compositing apps will treat like one big movie clip.

  • Turning a sequence of stills into a movie

    I have a camera which takes a series of time lapse still photos at a user-defined rate and duration. Once done, I'll have a sequence of individual jpegs which I want to turn into a stand-alone QT movie. I've looked for an online resource to tell me how to do that, but can't find one. Does anyone know of a weblink that would explain how to do this. I'm (obivously) a newbie to AE, but I've heard this can be done very easily.

    If the files are named sequentially (eg, IM0045, IM0046, IM0047 etc) simply import to AE and check the "Image Sequence" checkbox in the import window.
    If they're NOT named sequentially, you can import them into AE, drag all into a composition, trim as a group to the required duration (probably one frame) then use the "Sequence Layers" animation assistant to spread them across the timeline.

  • Sequences From FCE saved as .mov to FCPX

    I messed up and did not use the same sequence settings when I set up in my FCE project. As a result when I try to join the four sequences the first sequence is sized differently then the other three. The first sequence is setup in Apple Intermediate Codec and the others are different. When I save each of the sequences as .mov separately they appear to be fine. The problem arises when I try to put them into one sequence in FCE.
    Rather than start all over I asked around in the the FCE discussion and the best suggestion was to download FCP X and start over because FCPX can handle the different types of footage (AVCHD, SD and HD).
    After agonzing over this because of over of a hundred hours of editing so far and still more to go I have downloaded Final Cut Pro X. The thought came to me that if I export each one of the sequences from Final Cut Express as .mov and import those .mov files so that they all can be joined together, the differences that existed in Final Cut Express (because of the different Codec types), will not exist in FCP X. Is this correct? Is it really that simple?
    Please let me know.
    Re: Sequences with different attributes

    Without knowing the precise details of all the settings of your video it is impossible to give a definite answer.
    The simplest way to find out (if you already have the sequences) is to import them into FCP X and see what happens.
    If you haven't already converted them you should  convert just a minute of each sample (for speed) and import them.

    Open the videos in QT Pro player and export to a codec and frame rate consistent with any easy set up such as NTSC DV and edit that.

  • What sequence to be followed to move tranport req's  from r/3 dev- quality

    Hi all
    we are having our landscape as
    r/3 dev      -> bi dev
    r/3 quality  -> bi dev
    r/3 prod    -> bi prod
    we are now in development and moving all our transport requests from r/3 dev -> r/3 quality. and our r/3 quality will be connected to bi dev.
    we have to make a list of transport requests in a sequence taking care of all the dependencies.
    Can anyone please explain what all things have to be taken care when making a list of  our transport requests from r/3 dev to r/3 quality.
    for example : Like we have many enhancements  that are done to the standard datasources.
    suppose we have list of transport requests like this what should be the order of preference.
    1. request1-datasource activation.
    2. request2- new append structure
    3. request3-changes to extract structure (adding them from the pool into lbwe)
    4. request4-new data element created for within the above append structure.
    5. request5 - cmod code for transaction data zxrsau01 program
    6. request6- cmod code for master data zxrsau02 program.
    we have seen issues like we found some appended fields missing in quality system after transporting.
    please help me with the sequence in which transport requests ( r/3 datasources )have to be transported  from r/3 dev to r/3 quality
    thanks

    one last question
    when transporting requests related to generic datasources from dev to quality or dev to pro what should be the order of transports.
    is it the same order as for standard datasources?
    we have following requests related to our generic datasource
    request1: data element used in append structure
    request2: request for append structure
    request3 : data source activation.
    What is happening is like when we are following the above order we see that in our datasource all the appended fields are hidden (hide tick).
    so we have followed the order
    request1
    request 3
    request 2
    request3 again.
    Can any one explain if this is that right order . becoz  now we see all the append structure fields hide-untick but
    importing request 3 twice seems something odd. can anyone explain why this is happening

  • Need buttons on base movie to become inactive when external movie loaded

    Hi,
    I am working on a portfolio website and I have all my navigation with buttons linking to other pages, on the base level. All the buttons are  scattered around the stage and when one of these buttons is clicked an external movie is loaded in the centre of the page.
    The movie is a big white box with a slideshow of images from my portfolio in the centre of the stage.
    My problem is that the buttons on the base level are easily clicked by accident, even though you cant see them with the white box.
    Is there anyway I can stop the base movie clip working, once a button is clicked? When the user has finished looking at my slideshow images then they press a close button.
    Code used for button on main timeline:
    swfBtn.onRelease = function()
        loadMovieNum("graphicLayouts.swf", 1);
    Code used for Close button on external swf:
    on (release) {
         unloadMovieNum(1);

    In your case I'd recommend writing the said above two function on main timeline. It should go something like this:
    function enableBtns():Void
         BTN_1.enabled = true;
         BTN_2.enabled = true;
         // ... and so on
    function disableBtns():Void
         BTN_1.enabled = false;
         BTN_2.enabled = false;
         // ... and so on
    Now, in the function where you call the loadMovie method (it's on the main timeline, right) just write:
    disableBtns();
    And in the external swf file, where you unload your swf write:
    _level0.enableBtns();
    It should work if I didn't bug anything.
