16:9 to 4:3 Reformat
On occasion, we shoot in "16:9" mode on our DVCpro 50 camera (panasonic SDX900).
On a 4:3 monitor, it looks "squished" vertically.
what is the easiest method to get this image in the correct aspect ratio for display on a normal 4:3 monitor? (16:9 letterbox)
is this done in the capture or sequence process, or is it a plugin?

Here's what I generally do as my external monitor doesn't have a nice handy switch to force letterbox like my livingroom tv does:
I cut in 16:9 with little deference to what's happening on the external. Then, once my rough cut is done I'll nest that sequence into a 4:3 and call it Sequence1_4:3 or what ever.
Then, when I play THAT sequence it looks fine on my external. Any edits I make in the 16:9 will show up in the nested one too... I'll just switch back and forth.
Easy and cheap.

I've done all the steps on the site to correct this problem up until the reformatiing part except I tried to update the driver software but Windows says that it encounters an error when trying to install the new software.

We have a Windows XP desktop with iTunes for windows. The hard drive needs to be reformatted. Right now, the computer will not connect to other computers on the network. Can I save my iTunes songs to a thumbdrive, then re-load after reformatting? How do I do it?
Copy the entire iTunes folder out to the drive. If it is too big to go as one copy stuff over to another computer in batches. It is important to have not only the media but the library file in order to properly restore your library.
See also this User Tip. Assuming the machine won't connect to the internet you could download the SyncToy installer on another machine and then transfer it with the thumb drive. If it will connect to the net don't forget to deauthorize the machine before reformatting the hard drive.

After performing a clean install on a stock apple 1TB fusion Hard Drive it appears as things got reversed and showing my startup as not using the SSD portion. The SSD portion of the fusion drive used to be on top in disk utility, now its on the bottom. It also appears that I have to many partitions. Im thinking i need to reformat my Hard Drive again. I can't seem to find any answers.

According to your descriptioin, I don't think this is system problem, it should be Intel driver problem. It would be contact Intel to confirm this issue whether this is their driver problem.

Disk repair failed / should I reformat my drive / how to format and restore
I have a MacBook Pro late 2011 model and upgraded to Yosemite. The performance on my MB is ok, but just out of curiousity I ran a disk verify, and was told I needed to reboot, hold down CMD / R and run disk repair. I did so and the repair failed. I was promoted to backup and reformat/restore.
Now, I do backup everything using time machine (not sure though if Parallels image is backed up). I do not however have any install disks for Mac OS.
My questions:
1. Should I even bother reformatting my HD?
2. How do I go about formatting the HD and then re-installing the OS and all of my apps, particularly given that I have no DVD

I want to reformat my external hard drive using Mac OS Extended (Journaled, Encrypted ) but before formatting it, I want to make sure that if I loose the hard drive or the hard drive get stolen, no one will be able to retrieve or recover the information on it so could you tell me what kind of encryption will be used or is there any way to recover the information?

I am new to Imac. I want to use an external hard drive to backup to but the drive shows very little free space when in fact it is empty. Do I need to reformat it and, if so How? Thanks
What is the external disk?
Is it new? If so, maybe it has a Windows file system on it (FAT, exFAT, or NTFS). If so then reformat to "HFS+ Journaled".
What backup utility are you using? TimeMachine, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, etc...? If the external is suppose to be bootable because you are using a cloning backup (CCC or SuperDuper), then it is also important that the disk partition table be GUID.
You can find out this information via Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility, select the disk (not volume on the disk) and the partition time will be shown at the botton of the window. Now Select the volume and it will tell you how the file system on the disk is formatted.
Also do you want to leave room for a recovery partition on the external disk? Then repartition it with a small (2GB) partition that can hold a bootable recovery partition that you can setup via the Apple "Recovery Disk Assistant" which can be downloaded from Apple. -
I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles,descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .

Hey guys, I need some serious help. I have an external hard drive, iomega which apears to no longer work; I am sure it is something I have done and I cant figure out what! I am certainly not a computer expert and am in Turkey so I dont have access to a MAC store for assistance or anything like it. Yesterday I plugged my external hard drive into my MacBook and got a message telling me to refotmat. I looked up how to do so and through disk utilities thought I did it right. Now when I plug in the hard drive my laptop does not pick it up; the only place it shows up is in utilities, the same place I tried to repair and reformat. When I am utilities it looks like I have 2 hard drives, one under the other. One tells me the description of the hard drive, the other doesnt really tell me anything. So I erased both of them and I think that is where my problem is. Any help on how I could fix this? I tried to "mount" the one that is not "mounted but it didnt work....I dont even know what that means!!! Help!
When you erased the disk did you select Mac OS Extended Journaled as the format option?

What steps to take to preserve iTunes data when reformatting computer?
I have iTunes for my iPhone and connected to an Apple TV and an AirPlay speaker. My computer, a Windows 7 machine, is getting glitchy and I want to reformat and reinstall the operating system.
I want to know what I should do to back up my Apple data before I reformat.
I don't have any itunes music purchases
I have some podcasts
I have some paid apps on the phone
My entire mp3 collection is stored on a separate drive, just linked to iTunes
What should I do to
Ensure that I have all of my apps and podcasts when I reinstall iTunes on my computer?
Preserve my phone backups that iTunes does?
Is there anything else I need to think about before reformatting?

What works best for me is creating a complete image of the drive as it exists currently to an external drive. Then once the computer has been formated and reloaded I can put the content I want and need back on the new drive from the backup. The advantage is I know exactly where the data belongs based off that backup image. -
there seems to be problems with Yosemite and boot camp assistant
i'm cross posting this to the iMac forum but I spent hours online with apple tech today and none of the several foks I talked to there had even seen a 5k 27" yet and my call back from Cupertino and engineering is no till tomorrow so I thought I should post here too
MMy bto 5k shipped from China sunday night and arrived in Maine this morning.... Amazing when you think about it for a bto
iinstallation and set up we're going fine and I started up boot camp assistant to create a temp boot camp while I wait for my thunder bay 4 box to take the drives for my old Mac pro when boot camp will have a1 tera SSD all to itself....
so carved off a 700 gig boot camp partition which the assistant formatted fat I then plugged is the lighting to FW adapter in a LaCie 2 tera fw 800 drive to act as a bridge to my LaCie DVD burner which uses the old fw400 cables and inserted my new shrink wrap win 8.1 retail 64 DVD and up comes the win 8 install in very tiny type in a tiny window which got a bit of a laugh out of me.
And I go through it to the point of selecting that boot camp partition and then said it could not use a fat partition and I should reformat it from the win 8.1 installer which I did and then it said it could not use and unknown partition so I said great and booted back to 10-10 and the boot camp tool to put things back and it said it could not I then went to disk tools and it also said the 3tera fusion could not be either reformatted or put back to a single partition I was on with tech support where I went up through 4 levels of support due to the 5k bto which most had no knowledge of. We tried the optioncommand r to get to DT and the same problem as did going to reinstall from the net which after a 30 min down load could not reformat either it is now kicked to Cupertino with a call back tomorrow
( At this point all I want to do is put the computer back in the condition it was in when i started with a plain Yosemite on an unpartitioned 3 tera fusion... Then deal with boot camp when it can have its own drive)
am betting it will take a Unix comand line to reformat but be aware there may be boot camp issues with my configuration
and any help here will be great fully receivedTry booting into Internet recovery mode, ⌘⌥R, launch Disk Utility to erase the HD. If successful, reinstall the OS. If not, then return it (14 days with no questions asked) and get another machine. Apple sells it and they should know how to fix it.

I want to trade in my old mid 2011 MacBook Air for a new MacBook Pro. After I have transferred my data to the new MacBook Pro, how do I reformat the hard disk to wipe all my data and return it to Factory specifications? Will the built in Lion recovery allow me to do this? I am currently running OS X Yosemite. Has the upgrade to Yosemite damaged or removed the original Lion recovery partition?

I have a mid 2010 MacBook Pro. 500 gb ..recently updated to Mavericks.
In the past I had a problem with what I THINK were kernel panics (the white screen of death, etc)...came on here and found my way out of that and was able to get up and running with no future noticeable problems.
Lately, I've noticed the computer is running more and more sluggish. Loading my photos in iPhoto takes quite a bit of time, and I dread opening iMovie. Sometimes, other things lag behind as well, but those are the "heaviest" things I do so I thought I would mention them.
I decided to run the Disk Utility and tried to Verify permissions. I got a message "Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD. The disk needs to be repaired using Recovery HD.....etc."
I attempted to follow the instructions to Repair as suggested...and got the following message:
"Disk Utility stopped repairing Macintosh HD. DU can't repair the disk. Back up as many files as possible, reformat the dis and restore your backed-up files".
(interestingly, since I did that, I have been unable to print to my printer...says something about permissions - but I'm terrified to even TRY to fix it)
SOOOOO....now I'm nervous. I have about 15,000 photos of my kiddies and video clips....these are the 2 things I don't want to lose. Of course, I want to save most of what I have, but I am prioritizing.
I have been using Time Machine on my Time Capsule regularly.
I also have an external 500 GB hard drive...so I formatted it (found directions here) and so far I have gone to my "home" folder and dragged "iphoto library" icon to the disk. and also dragged the "itunes library" to it as well. Next I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to drag over to ensure my events/projects are not lost....Any help there ?
NOW my big question: Assuming I can figure out the reformatting and get that done - HOW do I know if I should try to Restore from a previous TM backup or do a clean install and just drag over my important files. I have heard that if the problem has been copied to my TM I will have the same problems. Any way to know that ? Or suggestions?

You'll need to buy the software, but IMO, it's worth having both a TM Backup and a Clone.

secondly, if I make the clone and use it to transfer the data, is that considered a "clean" install, VS doing it from the time machine? Or will it still be vulnerable to the same problems i'm having now?
It will be the same if you transfer data (during Install OS X Mavericks from Recovery) from the clone or from Time Machine. You don't need to clone, but since you are manually dragging files to your EHD, it's worth the cost to have Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper do the backup of everything to the EHD.
Clean Install will reinstall fresh from Apple's server OS X Mavericks. When you transfer data (either from TC or Clone), only your data and settings are transferred (so if you have a damaged personal file, it will still be damaged after the clean install) -
I had to reformat my PC and now it wont let me add music to my iphone.
I recently had to reformat my PC since I got a nasty virus. After getting my comp up and running again I went online to download itunes. I installed it without any problems, but when I tried to hook my phone up to it, I found out I can't put any additional songs onto my phone (I can view all pre-existing songs) unless I wanted to wipe the phone clean. There has to be a way to do this without me losing all of my music. Thanks for your help.

I read the first suggested article before posting this question, but it wasn't specific enough so I was forced to comment, "This article fails to specify use of the backed up file in the event of a system/HDD reformat." The article reveals that the profile folder name must match (match WHAT in this scenario?), but does not reveal if any of the files within the profile have that specific identification embedded in them [which might result in logical error or error messages, and failure to accomplish desired goal]. It also does not say if all I want to do is back up the cookies, whether or not will backing up cookies.sqlite and placing it in the new default profile after the system reinstallation/hard drive reformat work.
Let me get more general in the event I'm not communicating what I wish to: I don't want to use a confusing, perhaps badly-written Firefox add-on to do this. I have a few secure sites I visit that give me a really hard time when I update or reformat, like my bank and NetFlix. Both parties CLAIM that I am "attempting to access your account from a different computer," but their security protocol writers are MORONS and liars, because it is NOT a different computer; instead of storing the STATIC MAC address of my computer, which DOES identify the specific computer attempting access, they store a number of different bits of data which are VOLATILE and DYNAMIC [in cookies], and I have to go through this bullcrap of accessing my email account and entering in a verifying one-time-use code to get to my own [epithet for solid waste matter]. So, will I be able to do what I want just by manually backing up cookies.sqlite and placing it in the appropriate directory when needed? It should be a very simple matter for these idiot security experts to query systems for the MAC addresses or to get users to supply it manually (it's easy to find), but NO! That would make SENSE, be EASY, and MORE EFFECTIVELY MANAGE THE SECURE NETWORKS. My idiot bank does not even allow the use of special characters necessary for the creation of sophisticated passwords [that would take over a quintillion years to hack via a Brute Force attack].You can backup specific files from the Firefox Profile Folder and restore them when needed.<br />
This shouldn't pose a problem wit SQLite database files like cookies.sqlite.<br />
With other files you may have to be more cautious though.

You may want to backup the permissions.sqlite file that stores exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation. -
Time Machine hard drive need to be reformatted?
I upgraded from Leopard about 6 hours ago and so far I haven't had any issues with Snow Leopard and it is noticeably faster and more stable. However, when I just plugged in my Time Machine backup drive I got a message saying the "disk was unreadable by this computer". That never happened until I installed Snow Leopard. Does my time machine backup HDD need to be reformatted to work with Snow Leopard??? Is there a chance that version 10.6.1 will fix this little issue soon?
If you're sure you've got all your data on your Mac now, and it's solid, you could erase your external drive and do a backup right off.
I also would search as I thought I saw someone with a simple fix for a similar issue here.
