16 Bit Printing

Canon has just announced two new printers that will use 16 bit printing. I suspect that is reflected in the print driver.
Does anyone know if LR will send 16 bit files to these printers?

Supposedly it will. Adobe will still have to write the glue code though.

Indeed you will not. All the tests I have seen say that even in the cases where it is supposed to be an advantage (smooth gradients etc.) it didn't do anything. If you use the profile inside lightroom you probably will not see any advantage. I haven't see any difference myself.

Should I install a 32 bit printer driver on a 64 Operating Sytem?

I have an HP Officejet 6700e wireless printer. It is used by 2 computers. The Operating Systems on the computers are as follows:
1 – HP Pavilion laptop using Windows 8.1, 64 bit.
2 – HP Pavilion laptop using Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.
I noticed there are BOTH 32 bit and 64 bit printer drivers for Windows 7 and Windows 8 & 8.1.
I have 2 questions:
First, since both computers use 64 bit operating systems, shouldn't I install the 64 bit printer driver?
Second, is there any advantage to installing the 32 bit printer driver on a 64 bit operating system?

Install the driver which matches the operating system and the bit type (32-bit or 64-bit) that is installed on each PC.
Second, is there any advantage to installing the 32 bit printer driver on a 64 bit operating system? There is no advantage at all. It would actually be a bad practice unless the printer driver is compatible with both bit types.

16-bit printing Windows HD Photo Plug-in for Adobe

I use Photoshop CS4 and am thinking of getting the Epson 3880 printer, which has 16-bit printing capabilities. Unfortunately, at present Epson natively only makes 16-bit printing available for Mac systems. However, Windows came out with a plug-in for Windows XP and Vista systems. That was before Windows 7 was released. It was also before CS4 was released. The Windows site says the plug-in was designed for CS2 and CS3 and works through installing an XPS Print Path.
Will the plug-in work with CS4? Will it only allow me to print images saved in a Windows "HD" format, or will I be free to use standard formats that can be saved in 16-bit?

The function of printing with 16-bit as opposed to the standard 8-bit is a much larger bit depth which should yield a richer dynamic range and an expanded range of colors to print with. It seems to me that, if the printer is capable of printing in 16-bit and Photoshop is capable of working with and formating for printing in 16-bit, it would make sense to take advantage of the enhanced capability. Windows by default does not print in 16-bit, but it is capable of doing so (in XP, Vista, and 7). Microsoft developed this plug-in for CS3 for Vista and XP. As I currently am using XP, the plug-in will work with my OS. My question is will it work with CS4? I have other ancient plug-ins that load and work normally in CS4. I've installed the KPT Filter Collection, which goes back generations before CS1. But it's just filters. I would thinik a print plug-in would be more involved, hence my question.

Installing a windows 7 (64 bit) printer driver to existing windows xp network

Dear-Users......... i have connected 5 computers through a switch and ( hp laserjet 2014) printer is directly connected to one of them and shared on the network. 3 computers running on windows xp and one i added last time it was windows 7 (32 bit)
it is working good as well. the problem now i am facing is this today i tried to add one more windows 7 (64 bit) pc to this network. now this computer can't access the printer. i have installed the printer driver on the pc but its not finding he printer
on network ......my pc is sharing other network resources the problem is not of connection its connected to the network just printer driver is making problem for me.........any suggestion....i tried to install this 64 bit printer diriver on the printer server
computer as additional driver .....but it does not worksssss.......what should i do.......thxxxxx

So this issue is that your newly Windows 7 doesn't detect the shared printer, are you able to add this printer manually? Type "Add a printer" in start button\search box, then in the Add printer Wizard, select
Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer, Choose a network printer...
And make sure the network is working correctly and the computer where the printer is plugged in is turned on.

16 bit printing in Lightroom for Windows

According to a Lightroom 2 video from NAPP about printing, Scott Kelby states that 16 bit output is only available if you have OSX Leopard because it is an operating system specific feature, and Windows does not support 16 bit printing. However, Canon supplies a Photoshop plugin with the iPF5100 printer that supports 16 bit output regardless of the operating system in use. So I'm just curious why Lightroom doesn't support 16 bit output for Windows, but Photoshop does? Or am I missing something?
I've also asked the question at answers.microsoft.com if Windows 7 is going to support 16 bit printing, and a Microsoft MVP said "If a 16-bit print driver is created for the printer, 7 will not stop it from doing that. How an image is converted to print is not an OS limitation. The print driver does that." So who am I to believe? I would imagine that if Windows was capable of 16 bit print output then Adobe would support it on the Windows platform right? So if anyone from Adobe can answer this question, I would greatly appreciate it.

When it comes to printing, LR talks to the OS, and the OS talks to the printer driver. Therefore, if LR supports 16-bit printing, the driver supports 16-bit printing, but the OS only supports 8-bit printing, then there's no benefit. The Canon PS plug-in is different because the OS is not involved; the plug-in is effectively talking directly to the printer driver.
That said, I do not know for certain which versions of Windows support 16-bit print paths, not having investigated the matter myself.
(I also humbly suggest that it's not as big of a deal as you might think. One the list of technical matters that factor into print quality, I'd have to rank 8-bit vs 16-bit printing as being pretty far towards the bottom.)

CS5 16-bit printing problem... seriously, still?!?

I just finally broke down and upgraded to CS5 and Snow Leopard after hearing about the no color management utility released last year. I kinda figured the 16-bit printing problems would have been fixed in CS5 as well, but at least for me they haven't been.
For the last two years I've done my image editing in CS4, then switched over to CS3 for printing. I saw this upgrade as a change to finally be able to do everything in one place, but when I try to print in 16-bit I get the exact same result I got in CS4-- dark, low saturation, warm color cast. I'm running an Epson 11880 on 10.6.8 with all current drivers/firmware.
I'm making sure to check 16-bit in both locations in the driver, could there be something else I'm missing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I wonder if there is something different about the 8.65 drivers that doesn't default to Off (No Color Management). I sold my last Epson a couple of months back.
Why 8-bit prints fine but 16-bit doesn't seems really odd. Might want to ask in the Yahoo Group forum. Surely there are others with the same setup.

16-bit Printing on Windows

there is no 16-bit printing in LR4 for Windows. Many Canon printers have the 16-bit drivers, and they are very good. Say the Canon Pixma Pro-1.There is no problem to print in 16-bit on Windows any more. Windows doesn't mean XP and you don't use .Net to print in 16-bit. More than 50% Windows computers use Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
Why sltill there is no 16-bit print worklfow for Windows in LR4?

VM01: windows 2008 32 bit (SP 2) Terminal Server Connection Broker
VM02: windows 2008 32 bit (SP 2) Terminal Server Session Host
VM03: windows 2008 32 bit (SP 2) Terminal Server Remote App Web
My application is installed on Session Host Server. If I install the printer on Session Host Server I can take print from Remote App or Full Desktop
Now when my remote users access the server (which is accessed thru VPN with all ports open) and want to print from their local USB or Network printers (drivers are installed on Session Host Server) it gives error "The PRN Device not recognizable"
If I publish Wordpad then it allows me to print.
I have Changed GPO "Computer
Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Terminal Services\Terminal Server\Device and Resource Redirection" to enable redirection.
Still
not working.

I am pretty sure ( ) that Aperture has had a 16-bit color workflow for several years.
Here is a printing hint from the User Manual:
Use a printer that supports 16-bit printing: If the image you’re printing is a high-resolution 16-bit file, using a printer that supports 16-bit printing results in smoother gradations.

Problems with Win 7 64 bits printer configuration on RDS Web Access

I have a scenario with RDS 2012 with Session host in 2008 R2 SP1, and on clients with windows XP SP3 and win 7 SP1 32 bits, printer configuration looks ok but in windows 7 64 bits it looks like a truncated configuration , i have been tested every solution
that was reported before, like changing GPO, install Drivers in the clients and in the server, changed display resolution (to print in video) and nothing works, is any issue or incompatibility reported in this cases ?

Compatible 32 bit printer drivers for Color LaserJet2840

Can anyone tell me if any of the other 32 bit Color LaserJet printer drivers will work correctly with the 2840??
HP sold a number of Color LaserJet printers such as the 1600, 2500, 2600, 3000, 3500, 3550, 3600, 3700, 3800, 4500, 4550, 4600, 4610, 4650, 4700, 4730, 5, 5000, 5500, 5550, 5m, 8500, 8550, 9500, cm1312, cm2320, cm3530, cm4540, cm4730, cm6030, cm6040, cm6049, cp1215, cp1217, cp1514, cp1515, cp2025, cp3505, cp3525, cp4005, cp4020, cp4520, cp5225, cp5520, and cp6015. Would like to know if any of those 32 bit printer drivers are fully compatible with the 2840 printer?

16 Bit Printing in Win 7 64

I have a Canon 9000Pro II. Canon now provides a 16 bit driver for Win 7.
How will LR3 handle files sent to this driver? Will it still send an 8-bit file to the driver?

I believe Ian is right. Mac only. That said, if you let Lightroom manage colors, you are not going to be able to see the difference between 8 and 16 bit prints. I've tested this quite a bit on my Mac and I only see a difference if you let the driver manage color. This is because Lightroom sends the data in prophotoRGB in that mode and that space quickly posterizes when you only have 8-bit precision. If you send the data to the driver in a printing profile (what happens when you let Lightroom manage), 8-bit is more than enough precision to generally not get posterization. That's just my experience though.

Unable to scan and communicate with scan function C6180 Vista Home Premium 64 bit Printing works

I have an all in one C6180 Photosmart connected by wireless network (infrastructure). Network consists of 2-laptops, 1-Desktop and the printer. Everything works from HP solution Center on the Compaq laptop and the Dell desktop both running Windows XP. My newest laptop is a Dell studio XPS core2 2.4ghz running Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. I am unable to scan from the Dell Laptop using HP Solution Center nor can I scan from the printer buttons to the laptop. Solution Center opens I select "scan document" and immediately get an error message "unable to communicate with scanning device. Likewise with the copy function. The laptop does recognize the printer though and I am able to print wirelessly. All functions work when connected via USB so I believe the printer is fine. I have been working with this problem since I bought the printer in 2007. I spent many hours reading hundreds of internet posts, talking by phone with HP and via e-mail support from HP. I became frustrated and gave up for awhile but now I want to see if there are any new solutions that I don't know about. I downloaded full feature software and drivers for the 6180 from HP and performed various levels of uninstall (L1, L2, L3, L4). I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner, windows disk cleanup and manual registry deletions when allowed per HP. I have checked port settings, tried stopping HP functions is Services.Msc. The Digital monitor is currently running, however no scanner communication-computer to 6180 and no scanner communication 6180 to computer. I can print and fax from computer wirelessly. I have ran the HP diagnostic utility separately and it appears everything is fine, connection IPaddress etc. During install when prompted to run test it says the printer is connected to the network. I have tried to add a device to the network after install and get the message no wireless devices found. The scanner does not appear under Cameras and Scanners in control panel. Nor will it find the scanner when I try to add device. Firewalls and antivirus have been turned off. Still can't make it work. Suggestions please.

Sorry about your pain. L3 uninstall is what I recommend. Re-install from hp.com and this time, with the printer properly attached it should flow OK.

No printing Windows 8.1 64 bit printing to a Laser Jet 3550 USB

I purchased a new HP Envy 700 computer with Windows 8.1 i5 (64-bit). I checked before purchase and made sure drivers were listed at HP. I have 2 new HP lap tops that do not print but never tried to make them work.
Now my HP Color Laser Jet 3550 isn't recognized or print and will not load any drivers. When I try troubleshooting, it says, no problem found. The icon is not in the printer control panel. I Pluged in to USB 2. and 3. ports. HP technical help was no help. (My Printer is Old) No one at HP seems to know about this problem. Any one have a solution? Thanks!

I read a post that said sRBG was the best color profile for ibook. It is also the smallest gamut compared to Adobe 1998 or ProRGB. Is it really "the best" one to use? Also, can iBook printing support 16 bit files? If the answers are yes to sRGB and no to 16 bit, does anyone have a suggestion for someplace else to have only one book printed? Thank you.

Yes - that is the reason that it is recommended - user experience with Adobe RGB for example has been unsatisfactory
And note that iPhoto is a consumer product and the books are designed for consumers - I find them outstanding as do most users. Only you can choose what pleases you.

Quick question re. 8 bit vrs. 16 bit print devices

Do applications like Apple's Aperture print 16 bits to the Epson updated driver? Would the Epson 3800 be considered a "16 bit device". Need to make sure before I assert "a fact" elsewhere. I think it's correct in saying the LR does not yet print 16 bits, is that true?

According to Apple it does. Lightroom does not yet print 16 bit to anything AFAIK.
