16 Bit Recordings & 24 Bit EXS Samples

Hi,
If I'm recording at 16bit, should I not use 24bit samples in my EXS Drumkits?
I'm receiving the following error:
"Error while trying to synchronize Audio and MIDI
Sample rate 42701 Recognized.
Check conflict between Logic Pro and External device."
Now before anyone jumps down my throat, I've checked audio driver settings, and tried many different combinations, and done three complete removals and reinstallations of Logic, and Audio Drivers. I've trashed preferences too.
I've check the sample rates of all samples and audio files used anywhere in the song file, and they're all 44.1 regardless of bit rate.
I don't know, what else to think. So now I'm just clutching at straws trying to figure this out. I have two copies of the songfile and it happens in both versions after I select a track with an EXS multi-channel drum kit, so I can add two percussion lines to the drum part.

It doesn't matter if your using 24 or 16 bit for the EXS. You can even mix 24 and 16 bit files in the arrange.
Regarding your problem:
Did you consider the driver to be the problem? Check if this also happens with the "built in audio".
cheers
Martin

  • Sample depth 10 bit vs 8 bit

Televsion began processing video digitally with DVE's in the late 70's with such boxes as the Vital Squeezoom and ADO from Ampex, as well as entries from NEC, and so on.
So why the discussion of 8bit vs. 10 bit? a microcosm of links...check out SMPTE's site as well, all the standards mentioned...
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/finalcutpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=C%26 section=11%26tasks=true
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_digital_interface
All of those systems were based on composite Video and processed in parallel chunks of data with luminance and chrominance sampled together. We'd look at it today and say it was one step above VHS! For the time though, it was pretty awesome, though it was maintenance heavy.  When SDI was introduced it signalled a paradigm shift in television from slower lower bit rates to a solid 10 bit sample depth...and there were 10 bit systems inbetween which proved the concept.
What was the difference between the 8 bit composite to the 10 bit Component sampling, and why 8 and 10 bit SDI?
Well, there are several differences, but the consumer doesn't see most of them at home.  The flavors vary from DVcam to IMX50 and EVERYTHING inbetween, including MP4 on satellite uplinks!  There are a myriad of formats, transmission styles, modulation standards and compressions! Which is best?
We've used nearly everything in our own company from FCP Pro to Quantel eQ's in our workflow and recently purchased both Autodesk and Avid components to complement our table of offerings. What does it all mean and how is it useful to the digital offering.
Well, bottom line, mixing and matching creates as many challenges as it does solutions. But it doesn't answer the original question I presented...why 8bit vs 10 bit..is there a difference and why? Where does HD fit in?
if all the variations are limited to SDI and Component video, which is pretty much what our broadcast industry is based on (given that there are internal differences with RED camera RGB, graphics extreme high end renderings and what not), the work flow pretty much standardizes on Y, R-Y, B-Y, video.  It's a pretty good flow and it's close to the RGBY premium we all consider the holy grail of video, no matter the resolution.
Green defines both the color and the resolution, so the difference channels of R and B are half sampled to make bandwidth manageable. And that can be losslessly (for the most part) compressed about 6 to 1, as both DVCPro and IMX do it.  ProRes follows suit with it HBR compression as does Jpeg 2000.
Mp2 at 100Mbit and MP4 at about 50 Megs follow suit.
But the big question is whether there is ANY difference between 8 bit and 10 bit SDI in these flavors. As an engineer, I can unequivocally say yes. In one simple stroke, and in one sense it boils down to sample depth. And the price is in both the luminance and color.  A color difference sample, ie, R-Y/B-Y, is a half sampled signal for each channel of color, since our eyes are not very perceptive to COLOR noise, so the signal is cheated to save money, circuitry, clocks, and so on.  Still,  if you do get the chance to see a full RED camera- RGBY signal on an OLED monitor, it WILL pop your eyes! and that's an extrapolated stream.
Ten bit sampling (SMPTE 259M) for the SDI-SD signal yields 1024 steps of sampled video for a "one volt" signal.  Digitally, it is data which streams at 270Mbits for 10 bits sans audio, 360Mbits with AES audio embedded.  For standard def it would look like your average freighter at about 500 mph and if you could deliver it home, it would look pretty good. NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
Eight bit sampling for the same stream yields 256 steps of video for that sample "amplitude".  Streams at 143Mbits sans audio and 177 with embedded audio. Roughly  a tramp steamer rolling over the waves at about 125MPH...pretty slow these days.  An 8bit SDI-SD signal has equivalent chroma sampling to the 10 bit, but not the luminance or bandwidth, and that same principle holds true for HD!
And every other compression, down to DVcam is a compromise off these broadcast studio standards.  Take a look at Discovery channel sometime and look at the paint by the numbers skin tones and you'll see what shooting on the cheap gets you!
Now for the super tanker! HD at 1080i, weighs in at a whopping 1.45 Gigs of bandwith! Roughly analogous to half a frame of image from a Canon 5D, HD was still designed for a MINIMUM Screen size of 102"....MOM, try THAT in your living room!
(As a tiny footnote...Canon used the H.264 HD off their 5D and 7D for their theater experience in Vegas, and it was pretty cool)
Here is the nasty that several manufacturers DON"T want you to know.  It is the risetime on a digital sample that makes ALL the difference in the world.  I spoke the the CEO of AJA while at NAB this year (2011). This is a guy whose been through the ranks as a working stiff in the TV biz.  When I asked him about the Kona cards, he latched on to what I was saying very quickly...big smile, connection made!  "First time anyone's asked me that" he said..."rise time is really important for HD...and it's because it's so hard to get it and not have all kinds of artifacts"
What he was saying was that if you sample slower, you get less detail, less color, more noise.  Yes, Martha, there IS a difference between 8 bit and 10 bit, from old composite TV up to HD!
Color, luminance, detail.  If you put crap in, you get crap out.  Incidently, the rise times for all these.... 8 bit SDI-SD ~375nanosecods, 10bit SDI-SD 226 nseconds, SDI-HD ~ 157nseconds.  The faster you sample, the higher the frequency you can, and the crisper the detail.  The deeper you sample, the more steps, less overshoot, and richer color.  The difference between a 1940's race car and The 200+mph ones today. design, attention to detail, aerodynamics.

Unfortunately there is no such way in the filter panel, it might be a good
feature request, maybe you can add that using the link at the main page on
    this forum.
In the meantime there are 2 possible workarounds. Regarding the fact that a
16 bit is twice the size of an 8 bit you might want to use the sort by size
criterion in the Path Bar but when having different source files or layered
files that might not always be sufficient.
If you use the find command (cmd+F / or menu Edit-Find) you can select the
find by bit depth option. Also select the option to equal and use either the
    number 8 or 16.
I am looking for a way to use the Filter panel to sort/filter results by bit
depth (16 bit vs 8 bit images) - is there a way to do this Bridge CS4? I have
looked in every part of the sorting mechnisms and can't find a way. Am I
    missing something?

  • How to use SET BIT and GET BIT in ABAP Programming

    Hi,
Our team is currently working for an Upgrade  project which is using a tool automatically upgrades when we supplly the code. fine, But now the requirement is , we need to write different test cases for the available key words in ABAP. Now we r looking for the usage of  " BIT ", keyword. so , kindly provide any program or code using this key word.
Please find the description Provided and give some relative ABAP code to satisfy the given description.
The data object byte_string must be byte-type. The statement reads the bit at the bit position BITPOS of the variable byte_string and assigns its value to the variable val. A default mode can be specified if required *
    Thanks & Regards,
    P.N.Kumar.

What on earth are you testing? That ABAP still works? I think SAP might have run that through rigourous testing themselves.
If you want sample code, why not read the ABAP help, and work some out for yourself?

  • Bit Depth and Bit Rate

I have a pre recorded mp3 VO. I placed it into a track bed in GB. Clients wants a compressed audio file with bit depth: 16 bit and bitrate: 128kps max, but recommends 96kbps. If I need to adjust the bit depth and bite rate, can I do it in GB? and if so, where? Thanks for any help.

Please be aware that Bit Depth and Bit Rate are two completely different things!
They belong to a group of buzz words that belong to Digital Audio and that is the field we are dealing with when using GarageBand or any other DAW. Some of those terms pop up even in iTunes.
    Digital Audio
To better understand what they are and what they mean, here is a little background information.
Whenever dealing with Digital Audio, you have to be aware of two steps, that convert an analog audio signal into a digital audio signal. These magic black boxes are called ADC (Analog Digital Converter) and “on the way back”, DAC (Digital Analog Converter).
    Step One: Sampling
The analog audio (in the form of an electric signal like from an electric guitar) is represented by a waveform. The electric signal (voltage) changes up and down in a specific form that represents the “sound” of the audio signal. While the audio signal is “playing”, the converter measure the voltage every now and then. These are like “snapshots” or samples, taken at a specific time. These specific time intervals are determined by a “Rate”, it tells you how often per seconds something happens. The unit is Hertz [Hz] defined as “how often per seconds” or “1/s”. A Sample Rate of 48kHz means that the converter takes 48,000 Samples per second.
    Step Two: Quantize (or digitize)
All these Samples are still analog, for example, 1.6Volt, -0.3Volt, etc. But this analog value now has to be converted into a digital form of 1s and 0s.This is done similar to quantizing a note in GarageBand. The value (i.e. the note) cannot have any position, it  has to be placed on a grid with specific values (i.e. 1/16 notes). The converter does a similar thing. It provides a grid of available numbers that the original measured Sample has to be rounded to (like when a note get shifted in GarageBand by the quantize command). This grid, the amount of available numbers, is called the Bit Depth. Other terms like Resolution or Sample Size are also used. A Bit Depth of 16bit allows for 65,535 possible values.
So the two parameters that describe the quality of an Digital Audio Signal are the Sample Rate (“how often”) and the Bit Depth (“how fine of a resolution”). The very simplified rule of thumb is, the higher the Sample Rate, the higher the possible frequency, and the higher the Bit Depth, the higher the possible dynamic.
Uncompressed Digital Audio vs. Compressed Digital Audio
So far I haven’t mentioned the “Bit Rate” yet. There is a simple formula that describes the Bit Rate as the product of Sampel Rate and Bit Depth: Sample Rate * Bit Depth = Bit Rate. However, Bit Depth and how it is used (and often misused and misunderstood) has to do with Compressed Digital Audio.
    Compressed Digital Audio
First of all, this has nothing to do with a compressor plugin that you use in GarageBand. When talking about compressed digital audio, we talk about data compression. This is a special form how to encode data to make the size of the data set smaller. This is the fascinating field of “perceptual coding” that uses psychoacoustic models to achieve that data compression. Some smart scientists found out that you can throw away some data in a digital audio signal and you wouldn’t even notice it, the audio would still sound the same (or almost the same). This is similar to a movie set. If you shoot a scene on a street, then you only need the facade of the buildings and not necessary the whole building.
Although the Sample Rate is also a parameter of uncompressed digital audio, the Bit Depth is not. Instead, here is the Bit Rate used. The Bit Rate tells the encoder the maximum amount of bits it can produce per second. This determines how much data it has to throw away in order to stay inside that limit. An mp3 file (which is a compressed audio format) with a Bit Rate of 128kbit/s delivers a decent audio quality. Raising the Bit Rate to 256bit/s would increase the sound quality. AAC (which is technically an mp4 format) uses a better encoding algorithm. If this encoder is set to 128kbit/s, it produces a better audio quality because it is smarter to know which bits to throw away and which one to keep.
    Conclusion
Whenever you are dealing with uncompressed audio (aiff, wav), the two quality parameters are Sample Rate [kHz] and Bit Depth [bit] (aka Resolution, aka Bit Size)
Whenever you are dealing with compressed audio (mp3, AAC), the two quality parameters are Sample Rate [kHz] and Bit Rate [kbit/s]
If you look at the Export Dialog Window in GarageBand, you can see that the Quality popup menu is different for mp3/AAC and AIFF. Hopefully you will now understand why.
    Hope that helps

  • Creation of Add-on package for 64 bit and 32 bit SAP Business One Client

Please help me creating package for 64 bit and 32 bit SAP Business One. If Add-on executable is compiled with x86 option then there is no issue of connecting Add-on with 32 bit SAP Business one and if Add-on executable is compiled with Any CPU option then there is no issue of connecting Add-on with 64 bit SAP Business one. Problems are mentioned as below
    1. My Add-on uses MS ACCESS connection and the connection is read using Jet OLEDB 4.0 provider. It works fine for x86 compile mode but not when compile mode is Any CPU. I searched for the issue on Google and found a solution to change MS ACCESS connection provider to ACE.OLEDB.12.0 but again ACE provider is installed according to the Office version i.e. 32 bit or 64 bit office suite. If I install 32 bit ACE provider then Add-on executable compiled with x86 version is working fine but with Any CPU option throws error as provider is not registered on current machine.
    2. Secodly, our license validation activex dll is build using vb 6.0 and therefore when Add-on executable is compiled using Any CPU option, Add-on EXE cannot read from license dll. Any suggestion, how the activeX dll can be compiled whose component can be created from for X86 compiled exe and any cpu compiled exe.
Please help because we are stuck in this issue and cannot move forward.
    Thanks.

    Hi Alejandro,
That is one solution but did your add on used ms access connection? if you used Jet oledb to connection string or ace oledb connection string? what if 32 bit office is installed and what if 64 office is installed? how did you found the office version in install script? after determining the office version how did you installed Microsoft redistributable for ace oledb (32 bit or 64 bi )?
I am sorry that I asked many questions but these are the problems where I am stuck with the addon installer?
    Thanks

  • What is difference between 32 bit and 64 bit sql server memory management

What is difference between 32 bit and 64 bit sql server memory management
    Thanks
    Shashikala

This is the basic difference...check if helps:
A 32-bit CPU running 32-bit software (also known as the x86 platform) is so named because it is based on an architecture that can manipulate values that are up to 32 bits in length. This means that a 32-bit memory pointer can store a value between 0 and
4,294,967,295 to reference a memory address. This equates to a maximum addressable space of 4GB on 32-bit platforms
On the other hand 64-bit limit of 18,446,744,073,709,551,616, this number is so large that in memory/storage terminology it equates to 16 exabytes. You don’t come across that term very often, so to help understand the scale, here is the value converted to
    more commonly used measurements: 16 exabytes = 16,777,216 petabytes (16 million PB)➤ 17,179,869,184 terabytes (17 billion TB)➤ 17,592,186,044,416 gigabytes (17 trillion GB)➤
As you can see, it is significantly larger than the 4GB virtual address space usable in 32-bit systems; it’s so large in fact that any hardware capable of using it all is sadly restricted to the realm of science fiction. Because of this, processor manufacturers
decided to only implement a 44-bit address bus, which provides a virtual address space on 64-bit systems of 16TB. This was regarded as being more than enough address space for the foreseeable future and logically it’s split into an 8TB range for user mode
and 8TB for kernel mode. Each 64-bit process running on an x64 platform will be able to address up to 8TB of VAS.

  • Office Standard 2013 Key Management Service host 32-bit or 64-bit version ?

    Hello,
I have a 2012 DomainController serving as our KMS host.
I need to activate 2013 Lync 32-bit clients so I will have to install the office 2013 KMS host.
The KMS host download is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit.
Should I download the 64-bit version because the 2012 OS is 64 bit or will I download the 32-bit host since the Office version we use is 32-bit?
    BR
    Sverre Amundsen

    Hi,
Based on my understanding, I suppose that you want to activate 32-bit version of Lync 2013. Is it right?
If so, you can only install 32-bit version of Office 2013 on your PC. The 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Office programs don’t get along, so you can only have one type installed at a time. If you mix 32-bit and 64-bit version installed
on the same PC, you might see some errors.
Reference about why can’t I install both the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Office 2013:

By the way, there is an article about choosing 32-bit or 64-bit version of Office.

  • Is there a way to determine if an application is 32-bit or 64-bit?

Is there a way to determine if an application is 32-bit or 64-bit? To be more specific, I want to be able to determine if a 32-bit application is being emulated under WOW64. I'm trying to use the Call Library Function and selecting IsWOW64Process from the Kernel32.dll, but I can't seem to get it to work. I think I may be setting it up wrong. I'm using a constructor node and invoke node for Process and after calling GetProcesses in the invoke node I'm sending that into a For Loop to inspect each process seperately. Inside the For Loop is where I'm trying to use the Call Library Function. From what I've read IsWOW64Process has a Handle as an input and a pointer to a boolean as an output. I may be incorrect in this as I've seen multiple varieties of this call on the internet. I've tried setting this up but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm looking for help on how to correctly use the Call Library Function or if anyone knows a better way to do this I'm open to suggestions. Thank you for any help.
    Solved!

    Hi klynn,
I've got a link you might want to check out to make sure that your call function is correct.

  • OWB 10g Release 2 from 32 bit to 64 bit on Linux

    Hi guys,
I have a client who is planning to migrate their Linux server from 32 bit to 64 bit and migrate their Oracle database from 10.2.0.3 from 32 bit server to 10.2.0.3 from 64 bit server.
We have OWB 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) installed in the 32 bit server.
Our DBA is planning to move the entire database to the new server including the OWB repositories.
    My question is,
    Will the following work?
    1. Install the OWB 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3 or 10.2.0.4) 64 bit in the new 64 bit Linux 64 bit server
    2. Remove all the OWB repository user schemas & roles from the database where OWB is installed
    3. Install the OWB repository in the new 64 bit server
    4. Import the .mdl backup of the project from existing OWB 32 bit to the new OWB 64 bit server
    5. Configure the project with the new server
    OR
Since our DBA is planning to move the entire database to the new server including the OWB repositories
    1. Install the OWB 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) 64 bit in the new 64 bit Linux 64 bit server
Will I be able to access my repository that is migrated from the 32 bit server (avoiding the installation of OWB repository and importing the project and configuring the whole project in the new server) ?
Please someone shed some light on this. Your help is appreciated
    Thanks in advance....

Does this mean, ... we have to install the OWB 64 bit and install a new repository in the 64 bit server? In my opinion you don't need to create new repository.
After migrating database to 64bit perform steps from Metalink note 434272.1 "How To Update Warehouse Builder 10.2 After A Database Cloning".
It is better to save the same path for new OWB 64bit software. If you install OWB into different path you need to update OWBRTPS table with new path to OWB software (look at metalink note 550271.1).

  • ITunes 64-bit runs 32-bit, Secure link to iTunes Store failed, and SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 crashes every time I click 'Info' tab in an iDevice.

    Hello everyone,
There are 3 issues I have, as it reads in the title.
    1) I am running iTunes on a Win7 64-bit ThinkPad, and iTunes shows up as a 32-bit application in the Task Manager, always. I tried even the complete uninstalling (after removing Bonjour, Apple Mobile Service, deleting the folders, etc.) and yet, it shows up the same way.
    2) When I run diagnostics, it says 'Secure link to iTunes Store failed'. I've tried many things from whatever I've read in the forums and nothing seems to be changing that.
    3) Every time I click the 'Info' tab on any iDevice (I tried it with a 3GS and a iPod Touch), I get a 'SyncMapiInterfaceHelper_x64 has stopped working' message thrice. I don't know the significance of thrice but it just does come.
    I hope someone helps.
    Thanks!

That one's normal. On 64-bit systems, iTunes is a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit componentry. The itunes.exe is 32-bit.
    Oh, okay. Thanks!
Could you walk us through what happens when you try to connect to the Store, please?
The issue is when I run diagnostics. I happened to run it last night while updating my 3GS to iOS 6, and there was a 3194, and a search to solve that, led me to running the diagnostic.
I was wondering how it affects me because I haven't faced any issue in downloading or browsing the AppStore. The transcript of the 'Run diagnostics', for networks is as below:

  • How to find out if I am using a 32 bits or 64 bits version of JRE?

How to find out if I am using a 32 bits or 64 bits version of JRE?
If I have 2 instances of Java installed in 2 seperate directories, one 32 bits and other 64 bits on Linux. How do I identify which directory holds which version?
Is there any command that can output this info?
    Regards,
    Billamama

With a Sun JDK or JRE, you can use java -version:
    $ java -version
    java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-b105)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.6.0-b105, mixed mode)
    ... switch to the 64-bit JDK ...
    $ java -version
    java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-b105)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.6.0-b105, mixed mode)
    The last line says "64-Bit."

  • 64 bit or 32 bit installation of oracle 9i - which one?

hi there - i have a sun solaris ultra 60 with 2gb ram and 32gb hdd and solaris 9-64bit on it. should i install oracle 9i 32 bit or 64 bit? Also after trying to install the 32 bit server version of Oracle 9i on the same machine we noticed a severe decrease in speed on the server but uptime doesnt show any processes taking over the machine. Any ideas? has it got anything to do with 32 bit 64 bit installation distributions for either oracle or solaris??
    thanks in advance guys

If you have an instance running on it, you can query the v$version view. This will give your the 32/64 bit info.
    SQL> select * From v$version;
    Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.4.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 8.1.7.4.0 - Production

  • Windows 8.1 64 bit installs 32 bit browser (Internet Explorer 11) but user would go on installing 64 bit programs which 32 bit browser (Internet Explorer 11) rejects, how to stop this?

For many days I searched for answer of how an Internet Explorer add-on installed because few websites won't run without it, but Windows OS or Internet Explorer itself won't allow install of these add-ons.
    Please note following problems:
    1. Windows 8.1 64 bit operating system installs 32 bit Internet Explorer 11, but this 32 bit Internet Explorer won't accept 64 bit add-ons which I tried to install for 64 bit Windows 8.1, incompatibility of 64 bit and 32 bit which
I knew already but didn't clicked even on posting forum questions not before 'ORACLE's message in yellow.
    2. For 64 bit Windows I kept on trying to install 64 bit add-ons for Internet Explorer, which won't install or would send message 'Incompatible', once default installations of these add-on's are disturbed but not completely uninstalled, new installations
won't be entertained at all, only way is reinstall of Internet Explorer.
    3. Therefore I installed Apple's 'Safari', which also displayed same messages, but allowed install of 'Quick Time', and now I listen to my favourite songs on a great sound system of a website.
    4. Windows needs correction for this.
    Best of Luck.

Use the 32-bit version of IE. All rivals are 32-bit, no need for x64, a browser is not so big.

It's truly way bigger, handles much more memory, therefore should switch on x64 bit.

  • I don't see any information about IE 11 if it is 32 bit or 64 bit in indows 8.1 either not in about IE or somewhere else! in windows 7 it it is there you can see it

    hi,
I have windows 8.1 and windows 7 both installed on my laptop.
when I open windows 7 and go to start menu I see both version of IE   32 bit and 64 bit.
but when I go to windows 8.1 core edition 64 bit ,I don't see IE 64 bit or normal (32bit).  I see only IE and when I go to about IE I don't see  there any information about IE   if it is 64 bit or 32 bit?
I find it strange because I don't know with which version of IE I am working 32 or 64 bit?  I know my IE is 11 but I don't know if it is 32 or 64 bit?
    h.david

    It's complicated :)
MS changed a lot of things with the release of Win8.
By default, 64bit versions of Win8.0/8.1, will never run 32bit IE.
