16 Gb vs. 8 Gb of RAM for CS5.5, Lightroom 3 on the Mac?

Hi!
I've ordered a Macbook Pro 15-inch with a 2.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor. I'm going to be using it, most importantly, to run the CS5.5 Master collection (though I probably won't be using Premier much for now) -- as well as Lightroom 3, in which I'm a total newbie.
My question is: should I bite the bullet and get 16 Gb of RAM right away? Or would that be just a waste of money, 8 Gb being sufficient for my purposes? That is, how much of a difference would the RAM doubling make? I generally work with moderate-sized images (< 200 Mb). I do like to keep several big apps open (e.g. Bridge, Photoshop, and InDesign).
The 16 Gb vs. 8 Gb price difference is, of course, huge (something like 350 euros vs. 50 euros). Money's kind of tight (I got the Adobe student discount for the software), and I feel I really should be saving up for a better camera.

If you can still cancel the order, I would do that immediately and go for a Windows laptop, if you really need the portability. If you go for a Windows desktop that will improve performance by a factor 10 or more. But even a Windows laptop will give you a much better machine when you have two internal SATA disks installed, and the memory upgrade from 8 to 16 GB is far less expensive. In addition it will have better connection capabilities, more choices in video cards and you can gain hardware MPE support with the proper video card. A proper Windows laptop is at least 2 times faster than a MBP and much more affordable.
If you really want to stay with a MBP, which does not meet minimum requirements for use with PR, it seems a further waste of money to get additional memory, since the system is deprived of a good video card, an eSATA port and has only a single hard disk, where two are required.

    Hi...
My name is Turgay and have been using computer since 1982... 2 years ago, because of my friend's advice, i bought an iMac... It was the first Mac that i use... Till that, i was using normal PC's...
I bought an 24" iMac on July 2009 and started to use... I realized that i spent my 27 years for using (fixing) computers. Because the Mac was perfect. After iMac, i was really fine with my computer... But after something, that doesn't bother me, happened. The screen started to get cloudy and black... And it increased. Because of this i took my iMac to your authorised distributor http://www.bilkom.com.tr...
They changed my screen but in 2 months it happened 3 times and i wanted them to change my iMac with new one, under customer laws... In our country, the device must be changed with new one if the same problem occurs in 3 months. Because i know the customer satisfaction of Apple, i didn' worry about it but Bilkom refused my will... I spoke with them for 2 months but nothing happened, they just told me, it' not our problem.
Because of this speech, i sued them on June 2011... Last week, i won the case but just for the return of invoince... It costs 3.200 Turkish Liras (1.800$) and there's no 24" iMac unused... Bilkom again refused to give me an iMac... I thought that Apple's customer satisfaction can't be like this... I didn't write anything to Apple till now but if i can't get an iMac, i must return to normal PC after 2 years... And i don't want that... I offered an iMac 27" with core i7... No matter Bilkom accepts or not, they don't care of me... I'm a customer, they should do... I've never seen such a like company. I hope the real Apple will help my problem and save me from Bilkom...
Waiting for your reply... Thanks and regards...

Unfortunately, you are not communicating with Apple here - we are all other users volunteering our time to help with technical problems.
Here is a list of Apple contacts; there is no email address  - you will need to write a letter to their corporate headquarters or call them:

Although, it appears that your problem is with a third party store and that you have won in court - did you get your money back? 24" iMacs have not been made since 2009 or 2010. Now there are 21" and 27" iMacs.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The hard drive is not formatted, and it must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" in order to install OS X.
Close the OS X installer, and go to Utilities menu (on the menu bar) > Disk Utility. Then, format your hard drive in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as Format > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html Finally, close Disk Utility and install OS X

  • Once and for all: MSN VIDEO chat on the mac... can it work?

the situation: my friend in France uses an msn account on a PC with the latest version of windows live or some such. I'm in the states on my blackbook. I set up a shiny new msn account, hoping to connect up to him. I've tried adium, msn mac, mercury, and ichat, and nothing will let me connect to his cam, or him to mine.
so here's the golden question: can a mac user, as of right now, video chat with a PC user through the MSN network? if so, and if this is a waste of a new post, please direct me to the instructions. please do not tell us to sign up for AIM accounts, like I saw in another post.
if it's not possible, please explain why not. is it microsoft's msn client for the mac that's about 3 versions behind the pc one? is it a protocol issue? why is this so impossible? is it a social thing, i.e. europeans use msn and PCs and americans use AIM/yahoo and macs? I'm baffled.

It IS possible for a Mac user to do video with people using MSN/Windows Live messenger on Windows, but not possible to do audio.
To do video you will need either Mercury or aMSN. I haven't used either of these, and wouldn't touch the MSN service with a barge-pole, so can't give instructions on how to set it up, but both of them do have video capabilities. As i said though, neither do audio, so unless both participants know sign-language it may be of limited use.
The reason why it is not possible is both a protocol issue and a Microsoft one.
MSN uses secret, proprietary protocols for their service which means that anyone wanting to interoperate with the service has to reverse engineer the protocols and then implement them (and Microsoft can of course move the goal posts at any time by changing the protocols in a new version).
It's a Microsoft problem because they simply aren't interested in developing no cost applications for the Mac, as evidenced by the dropping of both IE and Windows Media Player for OS X (it wouldn't surprise me if Messenger gets dropped by the end of the year), so MSN Messenger lags well behind the Windows version and lacks many of its features.
The situation with MSN/Windows Live Messenger is unlikely to change until Microsoft switches to the IETF standard for IM, XMPP. It may be years before Microsoft switches but it will have to eventually as XMPP is the daddy in enterprise IM and becoming increasingly popular in the consumer space with services such as Google Talk, Gizmo (IM portion) and Live Journal (among thousands of others) utilising it.
Fortunately iChat already supports XMPP (Jabber) for IM, although doesn't yet use the XMPP standards for video or audio (though i'm still hopeful this will change with Leopard), so once MS switches you should be able to set it up in iChat. But like i said, it may take years before all the major IM companies converge on XMPP as the protocol of choice.
Anyway, if you're just interested in video AND audio chats between Windows and Mac OS X you don't have a lot of choices. There's the AIM/Trillian Pro <-> iChat route that you don't want to take, there's the Skype route (much as i loath Skype) which seems to be the preferred option among other forum posters here, and there are a few other alternatives too which i haven't paid much attention too, but there is currently NO way to do both video AND audio between Mac OS X and Windows using MSN/Windows Live.
Or i suppose you could wait for Leopard and hope that Apple provides MSN functionality but i suspect you'd be disappointed.
Not the answer you were looking for i'm afraid but i hope my post helps you find an alternative solution. Don't forget to send feedback to Microsoft and demand they switch to XMPP in MSN/Windows Live Messenger. The more requests the better. ^_^

looking to use my mac air to read ebooks - any suggestions to the best type application for that
    Thanks

That would depend on the source of the ebooks you're trying to read. If the ebooks have any kind of DRM, you would need to use the appropriate app (e.g. the Kindle app for ebooks purchased from Amazon). I actually like the Kindle app generally.

  • Cheaper RAM for iMac G5

I was searching and searching for cheap RAM for my iMac. It seems most places sale RAM for Macintosh computers but charge up the butt for it. Mac comps, or atleast the iMac G5, use what should be cheaper CAS3 memory. While searching I found most places were selling 1GB sticks of "Mac" RAM for $130 or more. I found the memory configurator on Patriot Memory's website and found this model stick of 1GB RAM to be compatible with the iMac G5 2Ghz, PSD1G400. I got two pieces shipped for $212 (not from Patriot but a reseller). I found most other websites' memory configurator will have a 1GB stick of "Mac" RAM and then another stick of 1GB CAS3 RAM for alot cheaper but wouldn't confirm the 1GB CAS3 RAM as compatible for Mac. These websites also would not list the specs of the "Mac" RAM. Who knows. The "Mac" RAM might be the same as the other RAM but they just want to sell it for more. I haven't recieved my 2 sticks of RAM yet but I'll keep everyone posted on how it turns out.

Mac-specific RAM was available in recent months for the same price that you have quoted. Apparently RAM prices, both generic and Mac-specific, have risen since then. Prices will fall at some point in the future. I have tried generic RAM in my iMac G5 and had no problem with it. I got a nice sized rebate when I bought it. Some others have claimed to have had problems with generic RAM, however.

I fear I may need to sell off some pre bought RAM.
What are the main considerations for buying RAM for a 2011?

Many of the recommendations including those of Harm are items you should consider. Overall the important points to keep in mind are noted below.
The IMC memory controller is only validated at 1333 and 1600. While our UEFI and board have been developed to allow for support of higher dividers this supports varies on the quality of the IMC. Most IMCS will not have issues running up to 1866 in full population. Keep in mind though that the higher the density and the higher the frequency the hard it becomes for the memory controller to stability. Currently we have for normal users validated up to 2400 XMP but this requires an outstanding IMC ( with sheer luck in that a CPU will offer running this frequency and density ). Higher frequencies are of course supported whether it be overclocking a module or even using higher rated kits ( 2600+ )
If you are pursuing high density configurations whether it be 32GB or even 64GB to ensure the best level of compatibility and stability i would advise you run 1600. 1866 as well should be ok. In regards to vendors GSKill has outstanding SPD and XMP programming and we have an extremely close relationship with them during the development and validation of their modules ( this is why you will see our boards continually under there compatibility lists for kits ) Although keep in mind that for all memory vendors much of the higher frequency memory kits are validated on high performance IMCs on select CPUs. In this respect while that module has been ensured to run at that speed it is not a guarantee to run on your CPU ( unless the frequency is conservative and applicable to most IMCs )
Keep in mind also that not all memory manufacturers are using correctly defined XMP tables (meaning they can potentially make adjustment to voltages they should not be adjusting). Technically under the XMP 1.3 specification vendors are only allowed to define timings and frequency all MRC timings and voltages must be auto defined by the board ( excluding the primary DRAM voltage ). This is important as XMP in itself is actually defined to work on the worst motherboards this actually is not always ideal as it may have to work on vendor’s motherboards who have poor bios/uefis or lower quality trace layout which is key for optimal memory performance and compatibility. All in all XMP from a quality vendor will work on our boards but just keep in mind XMP may not always be "guaranteed or even the best settings for the modules".
Great vendors to consider for memory on X79.
GSKill, Corsair, Kingston, Patriot, Mushkin, Crucial,
In regards to compatibility we have currently validated with all active kits on the market for 32GB and 64GB. As of now we have no current compatibility or bit initialization issues ( can occur when vendors incorrectly code SPD or XMP information ).
Following up on your question in reference to QVL's these are outlined at the initial launch and generally completed 2weeks to a month prior to the launch as such you will find many newer kits not present. Additionally in transition periods of density increases ( like the commonness of 4GB or even now 8GB dimms affects considerations as these modules and even frequencies were not available at the time of the launch ).
Overall though we do compatibility and interoperability tests continually to ensure the best support possible. With that in mind there are factors that can influence initialization of memory.
    Installation issues
    1. Damaging of pins during installation ( even 1 pin slightly pin or damage can impact memory initialization )
    2. Too much pressure from heatsink assembly can uneven pressure contact with the pin / pad ( socket to CPU )
    3. Mixed memory revisions ( this can occur even with the same model memory kits ) Memory vendors change ICs over time as such memory while it should work at lower frequencies and more relaxed timings can have compatibility issues in higher densities due to sensitivities of the IMC. If possible also try to buy matched sets and ensure the revision number is the same across all modules.
    4. Memory controller voltage this can be modified ( increased at times to help stabilize higher frequencies and higher densities ) this is more common for high speed kits 1866 and greater
    Hope this helps!

  • RAM for blackbook

Just bought a Macbook (black) 250gb hard drive with just 1GB of RAM. Planning on upgrading to 4gb of RAM (i know it only uses 3).
Just wondering what is going to be the best RAM (Samsung, Crucial, Micro, OCW) for the best price.
Also, is there any incentive to upgrade right to 4gb of RAM for $735 when you first purchase the Macbook>
    Thanks,
    JW

Given the competition, it would seem prices are relatively similar, except for those $735 you mention. (I would personally try out the laptop first with 1 Gio and later decide given how easy the MacBook DIY memory upgrade instructions looks, though check first what consequences it might have on your guarantee.)
Compatibility (size in particular for a laptop) would seem more important, with shopping convenience coming close. As for specific memory manufactures, Buffalo seems to guarantee Apple laptop compatibility with its Techworks SODIMM modules (though I have heard that its Select SODIMM range also works, albeit without the Apple-specific guarantee).
Regarding the comment about only 3 Gio working, is that for sure? I thought that Leopard being 64 bit ready and having a recent MacBook which should carry a 64 bit Core 2 (Duo) processor you should be able to use all 4 Gio (though maybe the chipset is also relevant).
    Cheers.
