16+ hours under Vista to format photos for iPod?

I have a 80GB video iPod running on a dual-core Pentium machine with Vista. The machine has 2GB of memory and performs well. iTunes release is 7.1.
I have 3400 photos and iTunes has been "optimizing" them for the iPod now for over eight hours. It's about 50% done.
Is this normal? Can anyone suggest a way to do this faster? The machine isn't busy. Resource Manager says almost no disk activity and the CPU utilization is less than 20%
iPod video 80GB   Windows XP

I don't have CS5 installed, but if you select the Crop tool, and enter 16 and 9 in the size windows in the Options bar (with no units) it will force the aspect ratio as you drag over the image, but will not resize it.  Remember not to enter any units, just numbers.

  • What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch?

What is the best way to format Videos for ipod touch? Used Quicktime Pro/ Export (iPhone setting). Videos aren't as crisp as downloaded Videos. Compressors /ipod video Setting also looks crapy (with bitrate med & High). What should I use?

Visualhub is a transcoder with multiple input and output formats with specific setting for iPod,iPod touch. Costs around $19-used to work great but recently everything I convert suffers audio crash than closes out the player. Hopefully they will fix it.
Elgato H.264 hardware transcoder is $99 dollars(USB stick that plugs in to Mac)-speeds up encoding of any file quicktime can handle, settings for apple tv, iphone/touch, ipod,Sony PSP. Worth the cost if you transcode a lot of video for the Touch or own an elgato HD tuner. Files work flawlessly and look great.
Mpeg streamclip-free. Works great, has presets or can customize the output.

  • "Optimising Photos for iPod" Does this affect photos in iPhoto Library?

    Hi,
I have a question regarding syncing pictures which are stored in my iPhoto library with my iPod touch.
I notice when I sync photos I get a message that iTunes is "optimising photos for iPod"
    1) Does this mean that 'quality' of the photos is reduced/compressed?
If so, does this mean that any picture downloaded onto my iPod, it's quality is reduced within iPhoto app.
    or
    2) The original quality of the photo is unchanged within iPhoto and it's only the synced photo which is 'optimised' for the sync process?
    I hope this makes sense!
    Thanks...........

    Hi Dave,
Don't worry, iTunes only mangles, er I mean "optimises" the photos on your Touch.
The originals will stay intact on your computer, if you look in the photo file you sync with there should be another file called "iPod Photo Cache" where the marmalised ones are stored.
    Dud.
ps. any photo, regardless of size gets butchered to a max of 640x480 and file size approx 650kb.

  • How do I format photos for using in imovie [16:9] widescreen?

I have tried cropping photos in iphoto and not-cropping them in order to import in my imovie. The imovie is going to be created in 16:9 widescreen, but it keeps pillarboxing my photos regardless of how I crop them. AND I have the preferences unchecked to automatically letterbox or pillarbox.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Bob W.

    Bob,
First, be sure that after you use the constrain button and arrange the 16:9 crop box where you want it, that you click the crop button. The crop won't apply until you do.
If you have an external image editor (set it as your external editor in iPhoto Preferences. Open a photo from within iPhoto, edit in the other app, then Save - not Save As) you can use it to resize your photos. After some experimentation I found the size 873 x 480 was the only size that had no black bars in the iMovie project.
For more info on my size experiment, including input from some iMovie experts, look at this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4334136&#4334136. Also follow the link posted by Matti Haveri in the last post of that thread. It links to his page where he explains the math of photo vs. movie, including the best sizes for 4:3 and 16:9.
Ignore my amendment about 875 x 480. In a related thread http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4345498 Matti Haveri concurred that 873 x 480 is the only size that puts no black bars on the sides or top and bottom of the screen.

  • Formatting Photos for Webpages...?

Hi, thanks in advance for your help, if anyone knows this-
I need to crop, adjust color and resize/compress pictures for webpages in pretty big amounts. (30-50 pics at a time). I don't mind cropping each one individually, but I'd like to "select all," and be able to just resize them for web viewing all in one go.
Do you know if that is possible to do on iPhoto? i've been playing around with it and can't find a way to resize for web.
If this isn't possible, do you know of a software that would allow me to do this? (Can you tell I've just converted to mac:)? )
    Thanks in advance!

Select the images and use File > Export to export them all to a folder with custom sizes in the format you want with the compression setting you want. Originals will remain original size in iPhoto.
There's also a web page export option which creates all the associates HTML, but you should be able to get the 'web size' images form within that folder too.

  • Formating videos for ipod- video but no sound!!!!!

ok i relize that a million questions have been asked about formating videos but i will make it million and one.
i have some vides that i made with windows movie maker and i also have some from DVD's. i read in another question to download video ipod converter, and i did i am just lil confuzed, i know my way around these programs so can some just tell me in lamins term like you are talking to an forgner tell me what steps i need to convert it and be able to have sound with movie. i have the 30g ipod english, itunes, ipod converter, i just need the help
    Cheers

OK as for your question, that is good. Itunes has the video and sound!
Here is how we fix this, (I hope, right? lol) do you have your Ipod set to Auto sync? You know it is on, when you cannot edit anything on your ipod, it just copies everything on Itunes!
Here is what you do if Auto-sync is on:
    To turn auto sync off:
    Attach Ipod.
    Open Itunes
Click on you ipod icon (the little ipod picture under devices)
The third button down will say: “Manage all music and videos”
Click on the box and give it a, √
Now you HAVE to drag and drop things (music, video, etc.) in Itunes to your ipod. Itunes will not do it automatically anymore. But if your computer crashes, your Ipod will not delete all of its music if you attach it again (because there is no music on Itunes).
If you do not have sync on, write back and let me know. Auto sync is the main problem that cerate this.
As for your question about dragging files to Itunes, make sure they are MPEG-4 format (Quick-Time) or they will not drop into Itunes.
Let me know if it works. God Life

  • What size photos for iPod?

I'm about to load some photo images onto my iPod but don't know where to start for re-sizing them for this purpose.
What's a good size to use for photos on an Ipod? I assume I would use a jpg file format.
    Thanks for your advice!

Here's something that is very odd. I took two photographs and sized them to 640x480 pixels. As level 10 JPGs, the resulting files were 196kb and 116kb. Loaded them onto my iPod Touch. An iPod cache folder was created and I found the two files that it created for my photos. Each file was 656kb!
How can you take a 196kb file and a 116kb file and make it 656kb? What the heck is this software doing to these image files?

  • IPod touch blue screen of death on vista when synching photos

    Hi forum,
I've just purchased my gorgeous iPod Touch 16Gb. However, when I try and synch it to my Windows Vista PC (32 bit enterprise edition), it blue screens, does a memory dump, then restarts every time.
This only happens when synching photos, specifically when the "optimising photos for iPod" process takes place.
I'm running the latest version of iTunes (7.4.3.1), the iPod software is current, and my computer is fully patched and up-to-date.
Is there anyone out there who can help me solve this problem? The photo functionality is one of the reasons I bought the iPod, and I would like to get this sorted!
    Thanks!
    Frustrated iPod user.

Restore does nothing + it's brand new - any other ideas?

  • Is Apple USB Fax Modem working under Vista

Hi I need to send out Fax's from my mini, I like to buy Apple USB Modem.
Will it work under Vista (is there drivers for it)?
    Thx for the help

I'm unable to get the USB external modem working on boot camp with Windows XP. Spent a long time on the phone with Microsoft technical support staff and my ISP's technical support staff over the past 2 or 3 days. Still not working. Their conclusion is that Windows does not work well on Apple (could be finger pointing). Apple tech support told me they could not provide support for Windows (total cop out) on Boot camp.
I've ordered a US Robotics USB modem that is compatible with both Mac and Windows. Won't have it for 2 weeks. If you find any answers, please pass on to me.

  • Why still a 1.5Mbps max for iPods?

Apple raised the maximum bitrate for H.264 content on iPods to 2.5Mbps a while ago. So why does the iPod setting in Compressor still max out at 1.5Mbps for 640x480 content? I would like to use Compressor due to frame controls, which are second to none as a deinterlacing algorithm. However, the actual compression quality of Apple's H.264 is sadly inferior to free alternatives. These free alternatives have middling deinterlacing options, though. I'd like to raise the bitrate to 2Mbps when formatting video for iPods to offset the quality difference, but I can't do that because Apple, even though they advertise the higher bitrates in their iPod/iPhone specs, will not allow it at all. it's endlessly frustrating for professional software like Compressor to be so dang static on options. I also have very, very limited control over the AAC bitrate and other functions. Attempting to format as a Quicktime H.264 or AppleTV H.264 results in a file that apparently does not conform to Apple's specifications. They will not play on iPods. If I could find some software with deinterlacing quality reasonably close to Compressor's, I would jump ship in a heartbeat.

Well, I stand corrected. I tried transcoding to DV to preserve quality and used the better deinterlacing in frame controls. It looked great...until high motion scenes. Then you literally get blocks of space that show visible interlacing. Literally random squares in an otherwise good looking scene.
There is utterly no excuse for this garbage, Apple. I thought I had found a middle ground by transcoding to DV with frame controls for minimal quality loss, then going to another program for the H.264 compression. You disappoint yet again. This is supposed to be professional grade software that costs a bundle. How in the BLAZES do bugs like this not only get through, but fail to be remedied after several patches??

  • How do I import Photos from iPod?

    Hi.
I've had some computer trouble recently, and it deleted all the photos off my intel iMac. And for some reason, my older mac decided to corrupt it's iPhoto Library (Thanks, Apple!) at the very same time. There are backups on the iPod, but is ther any way to import thr photos from it?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

For photos in the iPod Camera Roll (or Saved Photos for iPod without a camera)
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
For other photos (synced to the iPod) you need a third-party program like PhoneView or TouchCopy

  • Duplicate files appearing in Windows Photo Gallery under Vista Home Basic.

I am suffering a bout of duplications in my Windows Photo Gallery under Vista. I am getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruple versions of the original file.
Despite turning off all Autoplay media types to 'No Action', I get random duplicates when I try to enter update pictures from camera or memory chip through a USB port. There is no 'Enter Updates Only' option, and Microsoft says that this is unnecessary as
duplication is prevented. The duplicates however appear with 'copy' in the file name after the image numbering system. My preference is to view the memory contents via 'Computer' - select and open the port, and view, then copy and paste into Photo
Gallery.  Photo Gallery kicks in to view the chip correctly, but often/always (?) promptly uploads uncommanded. It did not used to do this, only in the last year or two.
What do I do, it is driving me crazy ?

    Hi,
As I know, for Duplicate issue, it might be caused by a corrupted database, please try to rebuild it as a test.
    Close Windows Photo Gallery
First show hidden files.Navigate to C:\Users\Usename\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Photo GalleryRename “Pictures.pd” to “Pictures.pd.old” (without quotes) and reopen Windows Photo Gallery.

  • PSE 6 under Vista - Photos flash on loading

    Hi,
I recently loaded PE 6 on my new laptop under Vista. When I open multiple photos with File/Open in Edit, the screen flashes on each photo a number of times. For example, if I pick 4 photos to open, it seems the screen flashes 4 times for EACH photo. Opening seems slow.
PE 6 did not do this on my PC under XP.
Does anyone else have this experience, and, more importantly, have a fix for the problem?
    Thanks for any help.
    Regards,
    Bob

    John,
Thanks so much for your reply. Though I've used this program since it was released, I never came across the Read Me file. I'm amazed, looking at its size, that anyone knows what is in it. I commend you!
It's true, the flickering only occurs in Quick Mode where I do most of my simple editing. It's very annoying and slows down the process. It's especially bad when the files are being open.
I guess Adobe has no fix for this, or it would have been in an update. Bummer.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it.
    Regards,
    Bob
