16 x 9  vs.  4 x 3

Why when I bring in footage from a widescreen
DVD into FCP do I not have to set my sequence setting at 16x9?

Widescreen footage ripped from a DVD is usually in its native resolution. Our rippin experiments (using Handbrake) show it to be square pixels at 720 x 400 in PAL mode. When dragged into a 16:9 sequence it sits in the middle with large black bars around the edges. I'm not sure if Handbrake has the capability to rip with the correct pixel apect ratio of 16:9 (1.422)
